Dogs are exceptional animals, and their ability and desire to form deep and loving bonds with humans is extraordinary. By adopting, you are truly giving your dog an amazing gift – a second chance. After the adoption, everyone – the dog, you and anyone else in the household – will need time to settle into the new relationship and routines. It is important to be patient and build trust.

Here are a few adoption tips that will help you bring out your dog’s superstar qualities.

Help relax your dog at home alone / Adopted dogs usually form deep bonds with their new parents and in the beginning, separation may be difficult. Help give your dog the confidence to be home alone with these confidence-building tips: • Leave the house frequently for short periods by walking out the door, closing it, and then returning. Once your dog is comfortable with short separations, randomly add some longer ones. • Ignore your dog during departures and arrivals: be very casual. • Practice mini departures inside by closing doors when you take a shower, use the bathroom, etc. • Give your dog a safe chew toy stuffed with treats before you leave the house.

Establish household rules and routines / If your household has more than one person, it is especially important that rules and routines be followed by every member. This encourages consistency and will give your dog stability and leadership. The more consistent your family is, the quicker your dog can figure things out.

Reward behaviors you want / Consider what your dog finds rewarding and use it to motivate your dog to repeat behaviors you like. A reward can be treats, walks, praise and so forth. We frequently notice and respond to the “mistakes” our dogs make, but instead, respond to the behaviors you like and those will become the ones your dog repeats.

Gain insights from training experts / Reading materials from dog behavior and training experts can give you excellent insights on how to handle a variety of dog-behavior issues. Some helpful resources in this area: • The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell • Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller • www.dogwise.com (extensive collection of books and videos for dog lovers and trainers through the website)

Children and Pets / Teach your children to be considerate of and respect your new pet. Things they should not do: • Disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping or caring for puppies. • Approach a dog’s food, toys or bowl. • Tease, chase or yell at a dog. • Play roughly with dogs or grab their ears and tails. • Corner, crowd or stand over a dog, as this may make the dog feel defensive.

Housetrain your dog to prevent indoor accidents

/ Even if the dog you’ve adopted was previously housetrained, assume for the first couple of weeks that they haven’t been. Take your dog outside on leash directly to the appropriate area and give them a treat as soon as they do their business.

Finally, here is a game to avoid. “Catch me if you can” is a game that may cause behavior you don’t really want. In this game your dog will learn she can outrun you and she may think it’s a game of “keep away” when you actually do want her to come to you.

Top Dog Breeds for Kids and Families

SOURCE: goodhousekeeping.com (edited)

Dogs can teach kids responsibility, compassion and patience – not to mention being the best playmates anyone could ask for. Before you adopt any pup, however, it's always smart to research the most suitable dog breed for your home and lifestyle. In this article we look at some calm and easy-going pups that are great for families with kids, but also great for first-time dog owners.

If you have young children at home, consider adopting an older dog instead of a puppy. Older dogs are generally more patient and laid-back than younger ones, which is key for kids who might pull tails or ears.

Temperaments vary based on the individual animal. The American Kennel Club recommends 20 family-friendly breeds as a great place to start your adoption search. Here are a few of those sweet, loving, top 20 breeds. Adopt one of these and your crew won't be able to imagine life without them.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Here’s a breed that lets you combine the portable size of a toy breed with the verve of a sporting breed. The result is an adorable and lively companion in the form of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. These sweet, silky-haired companions get along with just about everyone they meet – including kids and other dogs. The heart-melting expression is just a bonus.

Bernese Mountain Dog

If your family likes to think big, consider a gentle giant in the form of the Bernese Mountain Dog. These dogs can top 100 pounds, but underneath all the fluff is a sweet, warm-hearted pet known for its gentle nature with children.

Boston Terrier

Weighing less than 25 pounds, these peopleoriented pups wear low-maintenance "tuxedo" coats. Boston Terriers adapt to apartment living quite handily – although they'll appreciate walks around the block and active games of fetch with the kids.

Labrador Retriever

Labs have remained the most popular dog breed for decades for a reason. Labs love kids, adults, other pets – just about everyone. Their sweet demeanor makes them instant BFFs with anyone they meet, but don't underestimate their high energy levels. This is an exuberant breed that needs serious exercise every day. They can grow up to 80 pounds.

Golden Retriever

Another all-American favorite is the Golden Retriever. It lives up to its status as the quintessential family dog. The Golden Retriever is a quick learner that requires lots of physical activity: they love running, swimming, fetching and playing. In return, they will give you joyful companionship with plenty of silliness thrown in for good measure.

French Bulldog

No backyard, no problem! City dwellers adore these quiet and low-maintenance pups. Their trademark "bat ears" and smaller stature physically distinguish them from their larger bulldog cousins. The classic “Frenchie” exhibits an alert, playful attitude combined with easygoing adaptability.

OUR PICK: A Mutt

Yes, mutts aren't an official breed, but that doesn't make them any less loving or adorable. Talk to your local animal rescue for help finding the perfect mixed-breed dog to fit your family and lifestyle. Adopting not only gives one pup a forever home, but also frees up a spot in a shelter for another one in need.

When you adopt a dog it’s a long-term commitment, but the rewards are great.

[The Amish Bible uses the verb, ‘zehle’, to denote the future tense: ‘Sie zehle gedreescht warre.’ (‘They shall be comforted.’) We normally use ‘warre’ for that purpose.]

The Beatitudes

Matthew 5:1-12 ( The first PA Dutch translation was from the Amish Bible; the second translation was my own.)

1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. 8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall

Aboriginal People of Australia. The New Testament was first published in 1993; Psalms and Proverbs were added in 2002; and finally in 2013 the entire Bible was completed. All editions run the KJV English and the Dutch in side by side columns, except for the Psalms and Proverbs in the 2002 edition.

The Amish text used English sound values to represent the Dutch words, spelling them as though they were English. However, I have respelled their Dutch words to reflect their original German roots, primarily from a Rheinish Palatinate dialect. Further, I also included my own translation to demonstrate the flexibility of the Dialect to represent ideas in more than one way. You will notice a difference of style between the two and also the influence of Standard German on some of their word choices.]

The man and boy in the photo was Warren & Neil Kester, formerly from White Street in Bowmanstown. (both are deceased) The photo was taken in the early 1950s. Warren was good friends of William “Becky” Beck and together had an agreement that if Warren painted and advertised about the Route 45 Drive-In on his 1920s Ford Model A car with a rumble seat, Warren would be able to attend the drive-in once a week with his wife, Catherine, son, Neil and his friend for free. Warren worked at the N.J. Zinc Co and would park his car at work so everyone would be able to see it when driving by. Thank you to Brenda Kester, Neil’s widow, who was kind enough to call the gazette with the information.
