Maria’s passion for interior design was ignited during an interior design course in her senior year of high school. She went on to earn a BS degree from UNC-Greensboro with a dual major in Interior Design and Sociology, then spent the next 13 years as an interior designer. For the past 10 years, Maria has been a sales consultant for an educational publishing company. During this time, she facilitated professional development workshops and taught goal setting, time management skills and effective efficiency habits. Notes from the Designer: Casual Sophistication Nestled on a 6-acre wooded lot, a spacious 1976 ranch house overlooks its natural surrounding landsape. PS Communications (publisher of the Northwest Observer) occupies what was originally a residential structure before being retrofitted two years ago to accommodate a commercial operation. It was with great pleasure and pride that I was able to bring my creative design perspective to find practical solutions that meet PS Communications’ needs. The company’s gathering/conference room has several functions: to facilitate staff meetings, confer with clients, work peacefully by the fire, and hold social functions – hence, the need to design the space for versatility, durability and serenity. Based on the aesthetic preferences of the client, a selection of natural brown and mushroom colors were mixed with bold rust and clay hues with accents of tranquil green. Combining modern elements with traditional features, the furnishings were chosen to be comfortable and functional. The accessories provide splashes of color intertwined in fabric, art, pottery, and photos, creating a space with true casual sophistication.

FRESH, CHEERFUL BEDROOM
SPA-LIKE BATHROOM
1 Start with colorful fabric. This modern botanical weaved-print includes hues of raspberry, robin’s egg blue and mustard green. Against white bedding and chairs, the colors and patterns really pop.
1 Begin with beautiful, unique glass tile. This enticing shower has exquisite glass and stone tile. To offset the cost of glass tile, use it only as an accent on one wall, and select less expensive subway tiles on other walls.
2 Select timeless furniture with modern appeal. The sleek posts and brushed-nickel finials on this Kincaid bed put a modern twist on the traditional 4-post bed.
2 Combine stock cabinets with custom. To provide extra storage and functional seating, I designed a custom 2-drawer bench to connect the vanities.
3 Always include seating. Positioned in front of the wide window, these Flexsteel chairs provide a space for reading and rest. If you don’t have much space, try a small bench or ottoman.
NEUTRAL LIVING ROOM WITH A SPLASH 1 Launch the room with larger furniture in neutral colors like white, cream or beige. Add pattern and texture with a distinctive fabric like the upholstery on these Robin Bruce chairs flanking the fireplace. This dark brown patterned rug grounds the space.
3 Use indoor/outdoor fabric for custom treatments. The custom roman shade and bench seat are fabricated from mildrew- and waterresistant fabric.
2 Create a focal point. This modular IKEA wall unit is an affordable way to create a custom look. The wall behind is painted Luau Green (SW6712) as an accent. Hang an inspiring painting to pull your colors together.
