A message from Chris Pullen on behalf of the Leadership Team
A very Happy New Year to all! As we start what I expect to be another full-on year, I would like to ask you to have a pause for thought and reflect on safety. 2021 proved to be a challenging year from a H&S perspective with the first half of the year being particularly difficult in terms of incidents occurring. We have set ourselves a target to improve this and there are lots of ways we intend to help support the business to do this. Looking specifically at reasons why we have had some of these accidents, it seems that we have particular challenges when it comes to ‘Manual handling’ and ‘Slips, trips and falls’. These injuries are usually ‘avoidable’ and we all need to do more to prevent these kinds of incidents from happening. Whilst there will be further training and other communication on this subject, in the interests of keeping things simple, I would ask everybody to consider the following for every job:
2
•
Think before we start - can we do this job safely?
•
If something isn’t right, stop and do something Growing Places January 2022
about it. This includes the site, your equipment and your PPE •
When you start - work safe and don’t take risks or ‘improvise’
Unfortunately, we see too many colleagues get injured at work by thinking they are doing the right thing in just carrying on and getting things done, but if it isn’t safe, we need to pause and think again. Please do take the time to pause and let’s all work hard to minimise accidents this year. Don’t take risks – please work safe.

South Yorkshire Team Help Save a Life On Monday 13th November, Martin Gomm, Kevin Gomm, Luke Jordan, and Joel Moody were removing a living wall when their actions helped to save a life. The team were carrying out additional works to remove the living wall on a bridge at Netherwood Academy. As they were at work, a young lady in her twenties walked past Martin. When he looked back, he noticed that she was trying to jump off the bridge and quickly acted to talk her down. The other team members noted what was happening and called a distress line for the lady to speak to. As she was talking to them, she suddenly handed the phone back and tried to run back to the bridge. The team managed to restrain her and get her down from the bridge, and then called an ambulance. As the ambulance informed them that there would be an hour wait, they instead called the police who responded within 10 minutes. The police took her away in the car to provide her with further help. We would like to thank the team for their efforts in helping this lady and saving a life. We have provided a 4

Success for the H&F ‘Big Christmas Lunch’ 800 senior residents of Hammersmith & Fulham received a festive meal and gift bag as part of the Big H&F Christmas Lunch. The project, organised by charity UNITED and Hammersmith & Fulham Council, raised funds to ensure that the senior residents wouldn’t go without a Christmas meal. The project raised an impressive £16,000. Local social enterprise The Smile Brigade, organised volunteers and prepared meals which were then delivered to hundreds of residents living alone throughout the borough. idverde, which is the grounds maintenance contractor for Hammersmith & Fulham, joined other local organisations and donated towards the Christmas Lunch appeal. One of the residents that received the festive meal commented “When you’re alone, not only the food but having someone thinking of you is invaluable. Thanks a million. Your heart is certainly in the right place.”

Building the Future Through Apprenticeships The 15th annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships will be taking place between the 7th and 13th of February, 2022. This year’s theme is ‘build the future’ which focuses on how apprenticeships can help to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career and provide businesses with a talented workforce that is equipped with future-ready skills. We spoke to Elaine Callaghan, Head of Learning & Development, to find out more about how apprenticeships benefit idverde. Why did idverde choose to offer apprenticeships? As a business, we have always supported apprenticeships. However, until the latest government reform, we had always outsourced this to colleges and training providers and trusted that they would deliver a good experience for our colleagues. Unfortunately, we haven’t always had good experiences so with the latest government reform we decided to engage our own Learning & Development Specialists who could deliver the Level 2 Horticulture/Landscaping Apprenticeship – as this is the main apprenticeship within our industry. Being more in control of our apprenticeship means not 6

only can we deliver the curriculum requirements but also ensure key messages about idverde are built into the programme. We have successfully delivered this programme since 2018. It is a two-year apprenticeship and we currently have 57 colleagues undertaking it. Apprenticeships are open to all colleagues (not just school leavers) and we do work with other providers offering other apprenticeships. Can you tell us about the apprenticeship schemes we offer?
In order to offer a wider range of apprenticeships, we partner with other providers and are always looking for new programmes to broaden our fields of expertise as learning and development is a pivotal part of idverde’s DNA. As people are the heart of our business and as a service provider, we want to embrace change and support our people in their respective roles. Other apprenticeships on offer are: • •

•

them as individuals but also shows us as a progressive company who invests in our people.

As I mentioned earlier apprenticeships are available to existing colleagues (age is no limit). All we need to ensure is that by undertaking the apprenticeship they will attain new levels of skill and knowledge thus giving them the confidence to try new things and help propel our industry forward.

How has the business benefited from taking on apprentices?
Taking on apprentices that are new to the business means that we can offer people the opportunity to work and learn at the same time. They will also attain a recognised qualification, which is not only good for
Attraction and retention are difficult across our industry and with recent pandemic events even harder. We genuinely want to support people during their employment with idverde and for them to be the best version of themselves. Apprenticeships can help to achieve this. RSPB and idverde Creating Nature Positive Communities Through a new partnership, which is the first of its’ kind for Northern Ireland, we hope to connect homes with the nature on their doorstep. This year, idverde and the RSPB Northern Ireland are working with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive in a first-of-its’-kind project for Northern Ireland. The Housing Executive manages 85,000 dwellings, covering two million square metres of green space and a variety of priority species and habitats. RSPB NI and idverde will shape the way the Housing Executive manages this estate, working together to increase biodiversity. Saving Species The estate encompasses housing and community spaces, woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and peatlands. The Housing Executive is looking to transform 400 acres of grassland across the estate into wildflower meadows, supporting species such as bee orchids and the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan. Greater biodiversity of flora and invertebrates will help some of our key species: we hope to see the installation of Swift 8
Growing Places January 2022
boxes, providing safe nesting for this red-listed species. Managing woodlands in these urban and suburban habitats alongside landowners could also support Tree Sparrows, a species that declined 93% from 1970–2008. With 11% of species on the island of Ireland threatened with extinction, and 25% of bird species red-listed, a multi-organisational approach is a big step in the right direction. Leaving a Legacy Leading the project for RSPB NI is Conal O’Neill, Biodiversity Advisor. Conal will be developing a strategy for the future of the project, outlining a roadmap for the Housing Executive to carry forward. The unique approach of embedding RSPB NI staff in the project enables us to have direct input on the outcomes of the partnership, aligning our values on management for environmental and ecological benefits with our partners. Being involved from the start means we can shape a legacy for nature across communities in Northern Ireland.
The Olympic Park in London was designed with this in mind. The once brownfield site has been transformed into a mosaic of habitats, including wet woodlands, wildflower meadows and riverbanks. We’re excited for this partnership in continuing the success of this urban oasis, welcoming black redstarts, toadflax brocade moths and even streaked bombardier beetles, once thought extinct in the UK. Grey to Green Considering the size of the estate, Conal says, “There is so much potential here for change, if you think about the number of people we can reach who will discover the RSPB though idverde, exploring nature in their backyards and sparking an interest for future generations.” Community engagement is at the heart of the strategy, giving people the tools to design their environments for nature. Conal is eager to “green the grey in our towns and cities”. “These nature-based solutions can reach further than providing a stable habitat for wildlife. There are plans to transform an area prone to flooding and antisocial behaviour into a diverse wetland for dragonflies, damselflies and amphibians. By planting willow and alder, the aim is to deter people from inappropriately using vehicles on the land, creating a safer community. In Belfast, a disused alleyway is the potential site of a community garden. We will work closely with the Housing Executive committee network to establish links in these communities. Conal is eager for the RSPB to work with the Education Authority, getting involved in youth groups and sports clubs, and demonstrating the wealth of nature available to younger generations in their local areas, and how they can be part of the solution to preserve it”. This year will set a benchmark for the future of this unique project, showing the potential impact of this kind of partnership and the benefits for people and wildlife. Upcoming Events in February
World Wetlands Day World Wetlands Day is celebrated on the 2nd of February each year. It raises awareness about the importance of wetlands. Since the 1700s, 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded and we are losing wetlands three times faster than forests. They contribute to biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, world economies and more. As part of our commitment to the planet, we have worked on numerous projects to help restore and protect wetlands throughout the UK. One example of this is Scadbury Park, a 140-hectare site comprising farmland, meadows and ancient seminatural woodland. The site has 13 ponds and is home the Great Crested Newt, a protected species. Over the past five years, a stream bed connecting some of the ponds has been cleared of trees and opened up and has now returned to its previous habitat. You can find more information about Wetlands Day through the World Wetlands Day website: www.worldwetlandsday.org 10

Nest Box Week
National Nest Box Week takes place every year from the 14th to 21st February. Valentine’s Day was chosen for the start of the week as it is the traditional date when birds pair up for the new breeding season. National Nest Box Week is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology and has been running for over 20 years. It encourages more people to help birds by putting up nest boxes in their gardens. With woodlands having fewer mature trees and more areas being built up, there is a lack of nesting holes for birds. This is one of the reasons we have seen a decrease in population for some bird species in the UK. Building a secure nest box can really help your local birds! How to get involved If you want to get involved in this year’s National Nest Box Week, the British Trust have put together a range of plans for nest boxes, depending on which species you want to attract. The plans include nest boxes suited to House Sparrows, Blue Tits, and Robins. https://bit.ly/3rT1m2p

Walton Youth & Community Project on Wheels idverde recently pledged £1,000 towards Walton Youth & Community Project on Wheels, joining 35 other backers to help bring their services to young people in Merseyside. Walton Youth & Community Project (WYCP) is a registered charity that works with children, young people, their families and the wider community in the Walton area of North Liverpool. The service is user-led, allowing people to have a stake in implementing and planning services. They are open five days a week and offer services over evenings, nights, and weekends to ensure we offer constant support to our users. With the help of idverde and other donations from businesses and the community, Walton Youth and Community Project celebrated hitting their target on their crowdfunding campaign.
The funds will help to refurbish the youth and community bus and make it a space used for mobile sessions. Additionally, the bus will provide an opportunity to improve the local community, by organising litter picks in areas the bus is parked and encouraging young people to respect local green spaces. The project will help to train and support volunteers, offer outreach sessions for community members, consult with the community, offer positive activities for young people, and provide information, advice and guidance from the bus. The funding will now help the bus to be fitted with outer wrapping and to improve the interior by installing new tables and other interior altercations. Ravenscourt Community Glasshouse idverde supported the Ravenscourt Community Glasshouse in 2019 as part of the Community Investment Fund. It was one of the largest Crowd Funding Campaigns that idverde supported, with over 219 backers involved with the campaign including The Mayor of London, Hammersmith & Fulham Council, and local businesses and individuals. The project, organised by Hammersmith Community Gardens Association, is to replace the existing glasshouse structures that are coming to the end of their life. HCGA is a charity that is people-focused. They work with 60+ volunteers each week many of whom are socially or economically disadvantaged. One programme they run, ‘Grow Well’, runs activities for people with long term health issues or who have caring responsibilities. Once completed, the glasshouses will include a large central space for events such as school visits, volunteer gardening sessions and pop up yoga. 14

Introduction The new normal brings new challenges and opportunities as we fast approach the core business activities, spring is only round the corner. Whilst we are still experiencing holes within the new vehicle market such as absence of key commercial EV solutions at the right payload, manufacturers are finally waking up to the demand that is being put on them to supply. Whilst E.V infrastructure gains a significant focus, R&D is already evaluating alternative fuel products with the first hydrogen van in production as early as 2023. From the 30th of May 2022 the above cities are to introduce a charging clean air zone with the aim of reducing ‘harmful air pollution on local roads’. Each zone will enforce charges for ‘non-compliant vehicles’, but to add to the confusion, each zone will have its own way of charging and enforcing the rule. It will be the responsibility of the contract to set up an account with each council whose zone they are likely to enter, to pay the fines. The penalty charge will be reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days and increased by 50% if paid after 28 days. Illegal tyres December illegal tyre figures were at 15.71% (based on 70 tyres replaced 11 tyres being illegal).
DID YOU KNOW? Avoidable engine idling costs the business around £220k per annum. During the year, we need to be reducing this figure dramatically and that it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that the drivers under their control are aware of the cost to the business.
ARI Contact reminder
There is no reason for having illegal tyres and it is the responsibility of the driver to undertake the task of checking before each journey. It is an absolute offence with a £2500 fine for the driver plus three points for each illegal tyre. The legal limit is 1.6mm and the recommended change is 2mm.
A reminder on the below as we’re experiencing areas within the business unsure what number to call when contacting ARI for all things vehicle related. Please ensure only this phone number is used 03440 903 011. The 0844 number has now been discontinued and will not be in service with immediate effect.
NB: Checking tyres is part of the ‘vehicle daily checks’ which is the drivers’ responsibility.
If you require any additional ‘in cab stickers’ with this number on or key fobs email fleet@idverde.co.uk and we’ll arrange to get some sent out to you.

Colleague Recognition Scheme The Colleague Recognition Scheme rewards the contributions our colleagues make in going the extra mile to ensure the success of our business and demonstrating our values. Each month one colleague from each region will be selected as “Colleague of the Month” and receive a certificate and gift voucher. We are delighted to announce this month’s winners are as follows:
London & the South East Leonard White Cheam
Len spent the whole of the Christmas break working relentlessly to keep the Grating on the Culvert at Rose hill clear to stop the stream bursting its banks and flooding the clients property. Len visited the site multiple times, even in his own time on the way home to keep the client happy. He did this without a fuss or proclaiming about it. His dedication to the role of Park Support cannot be questioned, and he has a very pro-active approach to the role. He feels that a happy client is a quiet client.
South West & The Midlands Dale Pearce Staverton
A paramedic recently wrote to idverde to praise Dale for assisting with a lady and her young baby who were vulnerable on the roadside of the A39. The lady accidentally ran over a shovel which had fallen from the car in front of her. The paramedics found her with her baby on the roadside with no pavement or safety barrier. The shovel was stuck under her car and despite their efforts, paramedics were unable to remove it. Dale pulled over to offer assistance and was able to remove the shovel, allowing the mother and baby to go on their way and free up the paramedics for other emergency calls. We want to thank Dale for taking on the responsibility of helping others.
Housebuilder Nicky Hall Derby
Nicky Hall delivered a landscaping project on a show home for a newly appointed developer to our region. The drawings came through at the last minute and deadlines were very tight, but un-phased by this he took several teams, applied a little command and control, and delivered an amazing final product to the client. This project won us employee of the month with the client, but even better than that by word of mouth has won us two further imminent show home contracts, one with the same developer and one with a new developer. Nicky really did put the hours in to organise his teams and get this project delivered on time and to budget.
Support Services Richard Stiles Coventry
Richard has been exceptionally busy the last couple of years with the birth of his first child whilst also managing the expansion of the BD team. Bidding and tendering is time consuming and no easy feat, having to absorb masses of information from differing clients, coordinate teams and organise detailed information to develop convincing business cases to win work. Despite juggling the day job with life as a new parent, Rich has welcomed new members of the BD team and helped develop their skills in a very positive spirit. He has been a supportive manager and friend to a colleague recently hospitalised, contacting her regularly and ensuring she continues to feel a valued member of the team. We are proud to work with such an inspirational and conscientious colleague.
