FROM THE DESK OF DAVID WOHL, EIC: I
remember it like it was yesterday. I was working at Marvel Comics in New York City, and I had been recently offered my first “real” job after serving as an intern for all of my senior year in high school. My new (and first real) boss was a legend in the business--the late, great Mark Gruenwald, and he offered me the chance to work on his most beloved project, “The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, Deluxe Edition.” There was something special about Mark, and you knew it from the first time you met him and had a chance to talk to him about comics. He LOVED his work, and that love was infectious. Suffice it to say that I too loved my job there, and being part of a team of individuals who all enjoyed what we did, working on a monthly basis to get this and many other books into fans’ hands. What I remember most of all about the experience, though, was that feeling of accomplishment and pride I felt when I walked into that comic store on the Wednesday of its release, and I saw the book sitting on the shelves. At first, back then, I didn’t even get my name in the credits, but it didn’t matter in the least. I KNEW that I helped make it happen, and that was enough for me. I eventually got my name in the credits, first in “Marvel Universe” as an Editorial Assistant, and quite a few times since in the various positions I’ve held in the biz, but some of those times have stood out more than others--when I was part of a group of individuals that I knew was really enjoying what they were doing--a team that understood that the more love you put into something, the more it shows in the final product. And that has rarely been more apparent than in the book you now hold in your hands, “Indestructible #1.” Among the people I’ve worked with over the years, a handful of them stand out, and from the day I met Jeff Kline, I knew he was the kind of guy that Mark Gruenwald would have been proud of. He’s someone that you just KNOW really cares about the details, big or small, believing that the more you pay attention to something, the more it shows in the final product. And at the same time, he’s always willing to share his vast knowledge of storytelling so that he can help us to make the best books we possibly can, whether the ideas come from him (like “Indestructible”) or the other incredibly talented creators we’ve brought together for our first wave of books (Eric Garcia on “City” and John Raffo on “The 7th Sword”). We have several more very cool concepts on the way that I can’t wait to share with you as well! Since Jeff and I quickly realized we couldn’t put out a line of comics all by ourselves (as much as we wanted to), we’ve put together a small team of like-minded individuals, from my longtime partner in crime Renae Geerlings, to our boundlessly enthusiastic Marketing Director, Jason Enright, our levelheaded VP of Business Development, Mark Wheeler, and our promotions guru, Gillian Britt. We’re a small outfit that will probably need to continue to grow as we put out more books (as long as you like what you see, of course!!!!), but one thing we all have in common is that love for the process--that feeling in the pits of our bellies that wakes us up early on Wednesday morning, telling us that one of our new books is at the store ready to be picked up by you--and we REALLY hope you like what you see, because we’d like to keep making these comics for a long time to come!!! Enjoy! DAVID WOHL October 2013
