Alex Raymond became Lyman Young’s assistant on the daily Tim Tyler’s Luck in May, 1932 and the evolution of the look of the strip is little short of remarkable. Raymond’s influence blends with the “Young look,” even as he begins to give the strip volume by using both foreground and background. He also relies on extensive use of brushwork and shading, adding mass and dimension to background elements and characters alike. By late January, 1933, Raymond’s pen and brush have infused the art with a new maturity and before the year’s end, he had created the visual forerunners of Flash Gordon and Dale Arden. — BRUCE CANWELL
