THE BEGINNING
It all started with a small print run of a self-published comic that debuted in May 1984. Back then, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird shared a workspace they dubbed “Mirage Studios.” The name alluded to the fact that there was no actual studio, just a shared area they used to draw in. One night, in an effort to one-up each other creating ridiculous ideas, the two stumbled upon the concept of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” From those unlikely beginnings sprang a pop-culture phenomenon that quickly rose to worldwide fame. Now, thirty years after the Turtles first emerged from the sewers, Turtlemania is still going strong. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate this momentous anniversary than by revisiting some of the Turtle universes, and the artistic teams behind them, that have so greatly contributed to the phenomenon.

EARLY MIRAGE (1984–1993) Cover by Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird
READY SET GO Story and Art by Kevin Eastman The first TMNT comic series, later dubbed “Volume 1,” lasted sixty-two issues from 1984 to 1993. For the first years, Kevin and Peter did the lion’s share of the work, writing, penciling, and inking the series together. As the book‘s popularity exploded, they brought on fellow artists and writers to help tell new stories in a dazzling variety of styles. But the fundamental look and spirit of the book was anchored by Eastman and Laird’s art.
Their dedication to helping other comics creators was also a major driving force, from Laird’s 1992 founding of the Xeric Foundation to this story by Eastman in the 2012 edition of Hero Comics, a publication of the Hero Initiative, which helps comics creators in need. In “Ready, Set, Go,” Eastman harkens back to the “duotone” shading process that was a hallmark of many early Mirage Comics.
