Idyllwild’s trails By Jay Pentrack Staff Reporter

or many visitors, hiking is a favorite pastime. With trails ranging from easy to strenuous, visitors enjoy the best of what Idyllwild offers — its natural beauty. Some of the more popular trails: • Black Mountain Trail, strenuous, 4 miles. Trail leaves from Highway 243 south of Vista Grande Fire Station. Begins at 4,480 feet and ascends 3,292 feet. Great views. • Deer Springs Trail to Suicide Rock, moderate, 3.3 miles. Trail leaves from Highway 243 1 mile north of Idyllwild. Begins at 5,600 feet and ascends 1,700 feet. Beautiful views of Idyllwild and Tahquitz Rock. • Devil’s Slide Trail, moderate, 2.5 miles. Trail leaves from Humber Park. Begins at 6,280 feet and ascends 1,700 feet. Open to the Pacific Crest Trail.

• Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail, easy, 2.6 miles. Trail leaves from Humber Park. Open to the PCT at Saddle Junction. PCT north of Saddle Junction is closed. PCT south of Saddle Junction is open to the juncture with the South Ridge Trail. Begins at 6,100 feet and descends 600 feet. Offers great views, streams and plant life. If planning a day or overnight hike, bring along essentials: water (plenty of it, especially in the warmer summer months); a map, compass or GPS; extra clothing (temperatures drop as evening approaches); food; first aid kit; flashlight (and batteries); fire starters (please use extreme caution when starting and extinguishing a fire); knife; sunscreen; sunglasses; trowel or compact shovel to bury waste; and a whistle. Permits may be required for hiking, camping and parking. Visit the local Forest Service office for trail updates.

trolling downtown Idyllwild visitors will notice lots of dogs and their humans enjoying the gorgeous scenery, having a bite to eat or window shopping. Even Idyllwild’s unofficial mayor is a dog. During summer months, Idyllwild offers visitors an escape from warmer city temperatures and the blazing desert sun. Winters are decidedly cooler and pets and their masters should dress appropriately. Visitors should consult the weather forecast before visiting so their BFFs (Best Furry Friends) are prepared. A host of lodges welcome pets with open arms so bringing Fido or Princess along for a weekend getaway or vacation is hassle-free. And once visitors settle in, there is an abundance of fun and 4  The Idyllwild Guide, Winter/Spring 2013-14

interesting things to do. Most of the restaurants in Idyllwild welcome pets and their owners for outside dining. If shopping is on the agenda, Mountain Paws, a country pet boutique, sells everything from beds to treats to clothing. Feline friends can also pick up a souvenir for Ms. Kitty if she was unable to make the trip. Idyllwild is a hiker’s paradise with numerous trails for every skill level. From the easy 2.6-mile Ernie Maxwell Trail to the strenuous 5.9-mile Marion Mountain Trail or the 6-mile Tahquitz Peak Trail. For leisurely strolls, visitors can relax and enjoy the mountain scenery at Humber Park and Idyllwild Nature Center, among others. In this Guide are lists of lodges, restaurants and hiking trails that display symbols indicating their pet policies. For a moving experience, photographer Frank Bruynbroek’s “Oh

My Dog Gallery” is located in Oakwood Village near downtown Idyllwild. Bruynbroek’s project: “Compawssion: Portraits of Rescued Dogs” is a moving and captivating look at dogs rescued from the streets and shelters. “Most of all, I want Compawssion to be about mutual respect, love, joy and the celebration of the rich emotional connection between dogs and people,” Bruynbroek said.

Follow the trail By Shanna Robb Idyllwild Deer Sightings Volunteer Chair

O

n behalf of the Art Alliance of Idyllwild, our patron art galleries and our locally-owned businesses, welcome to Idyllwild. Located a mile high above the desert floor, you are encouraged to take a deep breath of our fresh mountain air before exploring the beauty of our lovely mountain village. Originally destined to be called Rayneta, Idyllwild is packed full of history. For many decades, Idyllwild has been a hub for artists and musicians. In addition to being home to the Idyllwild Arts Academy, one of three nationally recognized visual and performing arts boarding high schools, Idyllwild is respected as a fine arts center for creativity and art exhibition. In September and October 2013, AAI’s first public art project, Idyllwild Deer Sightings, was installed. Idyllwild Deer Sightings is a visual gift for both residents and visitors. Local artists painted 22 full-sized recyclable aluminum deer now gracing our village. Installed at 12 locations, with themes ranging from the legend of Tahquitz to music, residents and guests are offered a unique glimpse at the magic of Idyllwild. As you follow the trail of painted

deer and admire the artwork, please do not touch or climb on the sculptures. Artists took up to three months to complete their artwork and hand oil will impact the longevity of the paint. Climbing on the sculptures is absolutely restricted, as it is both disrespectful to the artists and our community. In order for these pieces of public art to be enjoyed by future visitors and generations we need your help in projecting the art. To learn more about the locations, artists and themes of Idyllwild Deer Sightings, visit the Town Crier or Idyllwild Area Historical Society for a free self-guided map, due out autumn 2013. To further explore the Art Alliance of Idyllwild, please visit www. artinidyllwild.org. There you will see an AAI calendar of events, including our annual Art Walk and Wine Tasting in October and Second Saturday Art Fair that runs from May to October. Thanks for visiting our little piece of heaven and supporting local businesses. We look forward to your return.

BRYAN TALLENT PHOTO

Darcy Gerdes (left), the artist, and Chris Trout, the site sponsor, with Gerdes’ deer based on the legends of the Cahuilla “White Deer” and “Tahquitz” at its installation at Spruce Moose. The deer is mounted on a rolling base that was given a faux “woodland” look.

Respecting public art

• Admire, but DO NOT TOUCH the paint. Hand oil will lower the life expectancy of the paint. • Imagine, but DO NOT SIT OR HANG on the sculptures. The deer are pieces of art and can break. Parents please watch your children. • Visually enjoy from afar, but DO NOT CLIMB on the carved monument or sit on the coyote.

MOUNTAIN BIKING With approximately 200 miles of dirt roads and more than 40 miles of trails open to bicyclists, the San Jacinto Mountains around Idyllwild offer a number of experiences for mountain bikers of all levels. For that reason, the local mountain trails have become extremely popular among riders looking for challenging routes and breathtaking scenery. Local trails provide mountain bikers with a diverse selection of roads from which to choose. The Forest Service has mountain biking regulations in the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains to ensure the safety of riders and the protection of natural resources. Bicycles may be ridden on established roads and trails within the mountains; however, bikes are not allowed within the San Jacinto or Santa Rosa wilderness areas or along the Pacific Crest Trail. If parking a vehicle on Forest Service land in the areas of Thomas Mountain and Black Mountain, Lake Hemet and Humber Park, visitors must display an Adventure or Recreation Pass in their vehicle. Call the Idyllwild Ranger Station at 909-382-2922 for more details. The pass is available in two forms: a daily pass for $5 and a $30 annual pass good for one year from the month of purchase. Passes are available at the Forest Service office and several vendors around town (see page 32 for listing). The Forest Service also offers these safety tips for mountain bikers: Keep your eyes and ears open for equestrians and hikers on trails and vehicles on roads; helmets are highly recommended; control your speed; avoid riding after dark; and, carry a map (available at the Forest Service). Idyllwild-area Mountain Bike Trails The roads are easy to moderate and offer more than two miles of mountain bike riding.

• The Hub Trail System: This winding trail system incorporates great views of Alvin Meadow and the Grotto.Trails climb from behind Idyllwild Arts up toward Pine Cove. FISHING LAKE HEMET

Lake Hemet, the largest lake in the San Jacinto Mountains, is a fisherman’s paradise, stocked throughout most of the year with rainbow trout by the State Department of Fish and Game. Natural channel catfish, big-mouth bass and bluegill also provide good sport fishing. Located at an elevation of 4,340 feet, the lake is 1-1/2 miles long, 1/2 mile wide and 135 feet deep when full. The lake is about 4 miles south of Mountain Center on Highway 74 in Garner Valley. It is owned and operated by the Lake Hemet Municipal Water District. Two public recreation areas are on the lake’s shores. The U.S. Forest Service maintains a picnic area for day use only along the north shore. The entrance is west of Lake Hemet Market, on Highway 74.You do need an Adventure or Recreation Pass to park in the Forest Service area. See the section, “Adventure Pass,” on page 32 in this magazine for more information. The water district also owns and operates the Lake Hemet Campground. It has been open to the public on a fee basis for more than 30 years along the north shore, toward the eastern end of the lake. The campground also encourages family recreation with a water playground, camping, picnic areas, boating and kayaking along with fishing. No swimming or water skiing is allowed because they conflict with fishing. Lake Hemet offers scenic mountain views and quiet lakeside moments to many visitors to the Hill area. Contact the campground personnel at 951-6592680 for more information.

STRAWBERRY CREEK

Lake Fulmor in fog.

LAKE FULMOR

ELLEN FEELEY PHOTO

About 10 miles north of Idyllwild on Highway 243, Lake Fulmor is stocked with trout by the Department of Fish and Game from spring through summer. The 2-acre serene lake on Forest Service property offers good trout fishing during spring, summer and fall months. Occasionally, the lake freezes over in winter. Lake Fulmor is on National Forest land. The lake provides day-use activities for the public. Fishing and picnic areas with grills, an encompassing trail that crosses a bridge, and beautiful surroundings make this an enjoyable spot for locals and tourists. A parking area is across the highway from the lake so use caution when crossing to and from the lake. You do need an Adventure or Recreation Pass to park.

Strawberry Creek is the only stream where fishing is allowed in the San Jacinto Mountains. California Department of Fish and Game no longer stocks fish in Fuller Mill, North Fork and Dark Canyon creeks because the streams are suitable habitat for a protected species, the mountain yellow-legged frog. The fish-planting program is financed through fishing licenses and stamp sales. Licenses are required for anglers age 16 and over and there is a daily bag limit of five trout during the year-round season. One-year licenses are available to California residents at Village Hardware and Lake Hemet Market. Visit www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/fishing/ for 2012 license rates and free fishing days throughout California. Equipment and bait may be purchased at Lake Hemet Market, Pine Cove Market,Village Hardware and Village Market. Fairway Market and Forest Lumber also stock some supplies.

THOUSAND TRAILS

Thousand Trails’ seasonal fishing pond is stocked with tilapia, bluegill and catfish.  Fishing permits are only $10 and free for 6-years-old and under with an adult permit. Equipment and bait may be purchased at the store.  Fish cleaning station located at the pond.  Picnic tables and barbecues available. Call 6594097 for more information. Adventure or Recreation Pass required to park on public land if not camping. Day use fees apply at Lake Hemet and Thousand Trails.

Hiking, biking and fishing, oh my! By Jay Pentrack Staff Reporter With a breathtaking view of the San Jacinto Mountains and a seemingly endless blue sky, Lake Hemet offers visitors a wealth of outdoor activities and photo opportunities just 15 minutes from Idyllwild. Nature lovers can breathe the soothing aroma of pine, oak and cedar trees; search the sky for eagles and hawks soaring overhead; and take it all in while enveloped by nature. Lake Hemet is a man-made reservoir created in 1895. At 4,340 feet with 12 miles of shoreline and a 420-acre campground, it is a popular vacation and recreation area. Because it is a reservoir, swimming is not allowed. The lake supplies water to parts of Riverside, Hemet and San Jacinto. Weather in the area ranges from the mid-40s January through April, to the mid-70s, May through August. Fall temperatures average 50 degrees. It snows at Lake Hemet so visitors

should check the weather forecast when planning to travel here. Lake Hemet is stocked with trout, bass, bluegill and catfish, and visitors may rent boats, including row boats, outboard motor boats, pontoons, kayaks and pedal boats. Vacationers can hike, bicycle or just take a stroll along the lake’s 12 miles of shoreline, play a game of horseshoes or bocce ball with fellow campers or just relax and enjoy the fresh air. Coming up for the day? Day use permits are available with a two-pet maximum. Planning to stay the night? With more than 515 campsites available, space should not be a problem. Lake-front camping and interior sites are available as well as dry-

tent campsites. Rental fees for RVs are very reasonable and partial or full hook-ups are available. Fully furnished park models are also available for one night or an extended stay. Campground guests can use laundry facilities and showers, and stock up at the market with firewood and other items. The natural beauty and relaxed pace keep families coming back year after year.

The Historical Society T

he Idyllwild Area Historical Society Museum is located in a charming cabin at 54470 North Circle Drive and the quaintness of the surroundings encourage you to step right in. In 1922, C.L. Emerson, an early Idyllwild entrepreneur and noted developer, sold the property to Della Ferguson for $10 in gold. The cabin and garage were built in the 1920s and the cabin is representative of the architectural style of many early bungalows built in Southern California. For most of its life, the cabin housed one family. In a period lasting almost 60 years, three generations of the Butts family spent their summers exploring the many hiking trails, riding horseback in the forest, and wading in the cool waters of Strawberry Creek. IAHS acquired the property in 2002 and spent the next year restoring the cabin and grounds. Today, the museum exhibits historical artifacts reflecting the richness and diversity of the area. Early Cahuilla Indian artifacts, pioneer lumber barons’ implements, furniture samples from a local factory, and numerous photos and documents are displayed to tell the story of Idyllwild and the interesting characters who made it possible. Admission is free and donations are always welcome.

Forest Service local history By Jim Tyler Contributor

D

igging through old photos, I found pictures I had taken while working summers for the U.S. Forest Service in Idyllwild. These were the summers from 1961 to 1964. I was attending San Diego State College and this job made college financially possible. Reflecting back, I’m sure I learned more during these four summers about working as a team, about people and myself than all my years in college. In the summer of 1961, I was hired as a crewman on a fire truck. It was a 1952 Ford, 4WD, pump and water tank, and the pump engine was independent of the truck engine. I guess the idea was even if the truck engine stalled, you could still pump water onto the fire and protect yourself. The summer of 1962, I became the driver of the same truck. Because I was saving money to go to college, I also volunteered to cook and purchase food supplies for everyone living at Keenwild Station near Mountain Center. This way the district didn’t hire a cook and take money each paycheck Continued on next page

for that service. I found I could do it much cheaper and eat better. I did this the next three summers. My first fire in 1961 was a lightning strike somewhere on Thomas Mountain south of Keenwild Station. We got the fire out but I destroyed (melted) a fire nozzle in the process. I was gently reprimanded by Howard Evans, our boss, for the loss of the equipment. It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it, and I learned a lesson in dealing with people. By 1963, Evans had confidence in me and from time to time when the helicopter was flying to check for lightning strikes, he would let me ride along as long as my truck-driving duties were covered. Bill More was the pilot. Kirby More and his crew worked out of Vista Grande Station and always helped me when I asked questions. Frank Gorzny, CAT skinner, and his swamper, Don Morland, were also great and helpful advisors for me.

Of course, Evans influenced me greatly along with his assistant, Cliff Mathews. Things could get pretty tense in the hot summers but there was enough humor to break the tension. It was 1963 and we were handdigging the root system around a large oak tree next to the range station. The weather was hot and Evans said we could work with our shirts off. He was having lunch in his residence behind the station. Some young guys, getting a camping permit, came out and started making comments and harassing us. Three of us

were in the ditch chopping and digging. Evans exploded out of his house with a 12-gauge shotgun (not loaded) slung over his forearm. In his deep, gruff voice he yelled at them, “Get away, get back. These are prisoners working. You’re not safe being near them.” With wide eyes the size of saucers the harassers quickly left. Waiting a few minutes, we all had a great laugh, along with Evans. He went back to his lunch and we continued working on the tree that was too close to the building to use a bulldozer.

Room at the inn (and bunkhouse) By Jay Pentrack Staff Reporter Strawberry Creek Inn has a rich history in Idyllwild. Built by the Thomas family (of Thomas Cadillac fame) back in 1946, the inn had many lives since its beginning as the Thomas family home. Over the years it has been a propane office, a dentist office, a restaurant and finally, an inn. Previous owners enjoy revisiting their history, stopping by from time to time to meet the newest owners, Rodney Williams and Ian Scott, who bought it in 2004. The two had never been to Idyllwild before. “We were looking at B&Bs in Northern California and we were actually in escrow on a property in the Russian River,” Willims said. “We ended up canceling the deal for a variety of reasons. We both had already quit our jobs and sold our houses so we were kind of stuck. I had this book called ‘Great Towns of

Southern California’ and Idyllwild was pretty much the only town in there that we had never been to. We decided to take a trip up here. It had

just snowed so it was postcard perfect. The rest is history.” The inn is a traditional bed and breakfast with the appeal of a home. Williams and Scott added their own Asian and African influences to the already eclectic, country-style furnishings that came with the home. “We wanted it to have a homey feel,” said Williams, “a place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Idyllwild.” The 10-room inn is well suited to traveling couples and serves a gourmet breakfast included in the room rate. Williams, having completed a sixmonth course of study at the Los Angeles Culinary Institute in1997, acts as master chef creating dishes made from fresh, organic ingredients. The Idyllwild Guide, Winter/Spring 2013-14  39

How Idyllwild got its name By John Robinson Historian Legends often become so ingrained in the public mind that they become accepted as truth. Such is the case with the often repeated story that Laura Rutledge named Idyllwild. Real credit for Idyllwild’s origin should go to Michiganborn George B. Hannahs and his wife, Sarah, who arrived in Strawberry Valley in 1889 and promptly built a sawmill on upper Dutch Flat. In the summer of 1890, they opened a tent resort on a forested bench just west of Strawberry Creek and called it Camp Idylwilde. The camp was located about where the Idyllwild Tree Monument stands in the center of town today. Besides managing his sawmill on Dutch Flat and Camp Idylwilde, George Hannahs, ever the entrepreneur, opened a general store in lower Strawberry Valley, about where today’s Tollgate Road crosses Strawberry Creek to Idyllwild Arts. On March 3, 1893, a post office was established at the Hannahs’ store and George Hannahs was appointed as the first postmaster. The couple named the store and post office Rayneta, in honor of their young son Raymond. Contrary to legend, George and Sarah had no daughter named Henrietta. In 1900, Dr. Walter Lindley, a Los Angeles physician, and a number of other doctors incorporated the California Health Resort Company and announced plans to build a sanatorium in Strawberry Valley. The Riverside Press (May 26, 1900) reported, “The plan is to put the sanatorium on the upper end of the valley, at what is now Idylwilde,” which clearly indicates that the name Idylwilde was then in use for that portion of the valley. The large two-story structure was named the Idyllwild Sanatorium, undoubtedly because it was located on the site of the Hannahs’ old Camp Idylwilde. It opened for patients in June 1901 with Ralph Lowe as manager and Charles Rutledge as bookkeeper and secretary. Mr. Rutledge brought his wife, Laura, and their daughter to Strawberry Valley for the summer season. The Hemet News of June 28, 1901 reported, “the name of Rayneta post office will be changed to Idyllwild” and that the new post office would be located in the sanatorium. The Idyllwild Post Office was opened for business on Sept. 26, 1901. There is no mention in any of the contemporary newspapers of just who suggested the name change from Rayneta to Idyllwild, nor why Idylwilde was changed to Idyllwild. It is entirely possible that the new post office name was Laura Rutledge’s idea, so the Rutledge story cannot be totally discounted. 40  The Idyllwild Guide, Winter/Spring 2013-14

Nov. 16, 1946 Idyllwild Town Crier ad.

Thirty-six years later, in The Hemet News of May 14, 1937, the story of Laura Rutledge naming Idyllwild first appears as a part of her obituary. Since then it has been repeated time and again. The facts are this: George and Sarah Hannahs opened Camp Idylwilde in the summer of 1890 and deserve credit for originating the name. Laura Rutledge may or may not have suggested the post office name be changed from Rayneta to Idyllwild in 1901. We’ll probably never know for certain. John Robinson is the co-author of the book “The San Jacintos.”

cooked to order. And the eggs are as fresh as they can be, laid by their own free-range, organically-fed hens. Guests requested Williams’ recipes so often that he decided to publish a cookbook, “Memorable Mornings From the Strawberry Creek Inn.” “What finally made me bite the bullet and do [the cookbook] was that we had an independent film producer come and shoot a film here and food was like another character in the film,” Williams said. “We ended up deciding to use our recipes in the film and then that turned into, ‘Let’s release the cookbook at the same time as the film’.” The name of the film is “From Grace,” a 60-minute independent film shot entirely in Idyllwild. The Strawberry Creek Bunkhouse was opened in 2008 by Williams and Scott as a “boutique motel.” It has more of a camping theme, it is

pet-friendly and more family-friendly. The price is a bit lower as well and the breakfast is laid back. A continental breakfast basket is delivered to the guests’ rooms each morning. The Bunkhouse features 18 rooms including two private cabins. “What guests love most about visiting Idyllwild is the outdoors, the nature,” Williams said. “Our goal is to enhance their experience with an exceptional stay.” Strawberry Creek Inn is located at 26370 Highway 243, Idyllwild. Town Crier home-owned again A

fter 24 years of outside ownership, the Town Crier was bought June 28, 2013, by long-time residents Jack and Becky Clark, Becky having worked at the TC for more than 23 years.

Ernie and Betty Maxwell founded the little paper, a four-page mimeographed newsletter, Nov., 1946. After it grew to multiple pages, they sold it in 1957 to Mark Clevenger and Gersh Rosen, who held it for just over a year before giving up and relinguishing it back to the Maxwells. Despite Betty’s death in 1968, Ernie continued on through the TC’s 25th birthday in 1971, then retired in Idyllwild and sold it to newspaperman Luther Weare and his wife, Marilyn, in 1972 who operated the little paper until 1978. That year, the Weares, too, retired from a lifetime of newspapering, also remaining in Idyllwild, selling the TC to a long-time newspapering couple, L.B. and Dorothy Hunsaker. In 1984, a young

divorced mother of two named Becky came to work for the Weares as a night typesetter. After a year, she took a job with the U.S. Forest Service but came back to the TC in 1989. A week later, Dorothy died suddenly. The paper was put on the block. The Chronicle Publishing Co. of Publisher-Editor Luther Weare (right) at the paste-up room in the 1970s. San Francisco picked up the TC, along with after more than 23 years. After a few most of its employees, and held it until years traveling, the Clarks jumped at the 1994 when a British company, Tindle opportunity to bring the paper “back Newspapers Ltd., purchased it. home.” In 1996, Becky, still an employee but The Clarks now also have a sevennow operations manager, took the helm day-a-week Visitors Center at 54425 N. as publisher-editor. She “retired” in 2009 Circle Dr. Stop in to say hi.

Manzanita’s beautiful pink blossoms in the spring.

I

dyllwild is home to many treasures — Harmony Monument, Idyllwild Deer Sightings, Tahquitz Rock and the manzanita tree, among many others. With its smooth, red bark and tiny pink blossoms, it is a sight to behold in the spring. However, the manzanita is not merely something to be looked at. It is also to be tasted — through a manzanita jelly that can be concocted from the berries. Avoid the sticky berries, which are more numerous. They are nearly impossible to clean. Many have tried to create the revered nectar, and in a variety of manners. However, a popular, old-fashioned method has been with a pressure cooker. The following story was published by Town Crier founder Ernie Maxwell, as told to him by Ma Poates: Cook the berries as soon after picking as possible as they lose their pectin content very rapidly. Like all jelly, it is best made in small quantities. Place the berries in a pressure cooker with a few leaves for flavor. Just cover with water and cook at 15 pounds pressure for 25 minutes. Mash the mess, water and all. Strain it through a cheesecloth, Take equal parts sugar and juice. (If you like it more tart, 3/4 cup sugar to a cup of juice will do.) Let that come to a full, rolling boil for about 20 minutes. (Some people let their juice boil 20 minutes, then add sugar kept warm in the oven and let it boil to the top of the kettle.) During the cooking process, it turns from a muddy brown to an exuberant red and is a gourmet’s delight with a tangy, tart flavor.

OUR HISTORY

Pioneer revists Idyllwild after 55 years

Monrovia man recalled wagon journey into San Jacinto Mountains in 1877 WILD GAME PLENTIFUL; BLACK BEAR AS WELL AS DEER ALONG STRAWBERRY CREEK HALF CENTURY AGO

Editor’s note: This recollection was written in 1932. Returning to the Idyllwild region of the San Jacinto Mountains after an absence of 55 years, W.H. Marquis of Monrovia expressed surprises over the remarkable development of Riverside County’s mile-high resort region and had an interesting time locating landmarks he had last seen more than half a century ago. Recalling his original visit to the Idyllwild district, Mr. Marquis said: Fifty-five years have rolled by since I made my first trip to Strawberry Valley,

now called Idyllwild, in the San Jacinto Mountains. Our party, numbering three, included W.R. Patterson, now a resident of Los Angeles, William Johnson, a young man from the east, and myself. At that time we were all living in Westminister colony, about 8 miles west of Santa Ana. We started on the afternoon of June 4, 1877. We had a good team of farm horses with a medium-sized wagon in which we placed a tent, provisions and a few cooking utensils. A saddle horse was led for use in the mountains. We camped the first night in the Santa Ana canyon beside the river. Starting early, for the day promised to be very warm, we passed through Rincon, thence through the site of the future city of Corona, and made camp in the little

village of Riverside by the big Gage canal. The following morning we drove out over the Box Springs road, watering the horses at the spring and taking a supply for ourselves. It was beastly hot crossing the barren plains and the team had to walk. The year 1877 was a dry year and we saw many poor, emaciated cattle slowly starving to death. That evening camp was made on the site of the present little city of San Jacinto. Nearby was a small store kept by a Russian, and at a short distance along a belt of cottonwood timber was a post office in connection with a store. A few scattered ranch houses could be seen. That night a big cat investigated the contents of the wagon. The next day we proceeded only as far as the foot of the

San Jacinto mountain grade so that the team would be fresh for the hard pull in the morning. We had been talking about the grade and wondering if we were likely to have any trouble making the ascent. All that afternoon we looked at the little visible portions of the narrow, winding road away up on the rock side of the old mountain as we gradually approached the foot. Accosting a man working along a ditch by the roadside, we asked if the grade was very steep. He replied, ‘Steep? Why it’s so steep that in some places it leans over.’ And there was talk about pitches that were 7 feet to the rod. This was not at all reassuring, but we had confidence in the ability of the team to make it. A hasty breakfast, eaten by the light of the campfire, the team well rested and fed, the toll paid, (it was a toll road), we started. Patterson drove, walking part of the

time. Johnson and I walked at the rear of the wagon and it was our business to see that the “chuckblock,” wedgeshaped, was chucked under the hind wheel whenever the team stopped to rest, even when the brakes were set. Five-and-a-half hours were consumed in making the 2-1/4 miles of the steep part of the grade. At length we reached the edge of the virgin forest where we stopped for lunch. Looking out over the country we had traversed the day before, we saw great swirling clouds of dust by a fierce desert wind, and were very glad that we were not fighting our way through it. In the afternoon we drove slowly up into beautiful, peaceful Strawberry Valley. The primeval forest, groves of symmetrical fir trees, clusters of shapely cedars, oaks black and yellow, and great sugar pines, their drooping branches hanging full of long, slender cones, had not then been marred by the destructive hand of man. There were acres of manzanita bushes with their red berries, and secluded glens filled with luxuriant

growths of ferns, wild roses and many varieties of flowers. Wild strawberries ripened along the banks of rippling streams. In those days the mountains were plentiful, supplied with game, bear, mountain lion, deer and foxes, and coveys of mountain quail, hummingbirds, blue jays and many other kinds of birds. Chipmunks played hide-and-seek among the rocks, while hundreds of graceful timber squirrels sported about the branches of the pines, barking at the invaders of their territory. And there was another resident of the mountain not so pleasant to meet, the deadly black-diamond rattlesnake, and he was plentiful. Even now, after the lapse of 55 years, I can close my eyes and in fancy hear again the softly sighing zephyrs perfumed with the fragrant odor of the pine, the music of the waterfall, the barking of the squirrels, the drumming of the innumerable woodpeckers as they drilled holes in the big pine trees for

the storage of acorns, and the onceheard-never-to-be-forgotten b-z-z-z of the disturbed rattler. The next morning we put up the tent and arranged our camp in in the shade of an oak beside the creek. Close by was a cluster of pine trees among which we built a crude platform several feet above ground, covered it with masses of ferns and made our bed safe from any crawling snake. A short distance up the valley stood a log cabin occupied by two men from Riverside, Smith and Califf. They had two workmen and were prepared to direct a sawmill by the stream. Frequently in the evening they would come down to our camp to sit by the fire where we would tell stories, laugh and joke. Smith was a humorous fellow, full of life, while Califf was more reserved. He had, as he later confided to us, suffered the loss of a comfortable fortune, and it cast a shadow over his life. Some distance below camp a crude dirt dam had been constructed to confine a small body of water and provide sufficient power to run a jigsaw. A roughly-built house stood there. A man by the name of Blodgett was, I believe, one of the men interested in the project. Further down the valley was a shack occupied by a man by the name of Thomson, while not far from the head of the grade lived a Mrs.

Pierce with her two daughters. In Little Strawberry (now Dutch Flats, site of Tahquitz Golf Club), a mile-and-a-half north of the main valley, lived a man by the name of Campbell, with his wife and three small children. Near his log house lived a German, a shoemaker by trade, whose name I have forgotten. So far as I recollect now, there were no other habitations, though a man by the name of Thomas, with quite a family, resided over to the south in what was then known as Thomas Valley. William Johnson was to drive the team home, so in about a week we saw him safe down the grade. A brushy oak tree was lashed to the rear axle to serve as a drag going down, with the brake firmly set in addition. We led the saddlehorse, and Patterson and I took turns riding back up to the camp. Patterson shot a deer one day so we had fresh meat. A good portion of it we “jerked” and, when cured, was stowed away in a box in the tent. One night Patterson woke me from a sound sleep saying, “There’s a lion in our tent after our jerky.” The tent was open in front. We both sprang down from our beds and made for the tent, arriving in time to catch a fleeting glimpse of some creature rushing away through the darkness. Day after day passed. We arose early or slept late, as we chose, rambled about over the mountain, making one trip into Tahquitz Valley and finding it quite cold at night there.

We enjoyed life to the utmost and, with sharpened appetites, our food supply diminished rapidly. One day shortly before the Fourth of July, Mrs. Pierce rode up to camp and gave us a cordial invitation to a double celebration at her place, the celebration of the glorious Fourth and the marriage of her two daughters. With visions of cake and pie, we lost no time in accepting and on the morning of the Fourth, shaved, with clean shirts, hiked down fully prepared to do justice to the goodies that were soon piled on a long table in the shade of the pines. The two young girls had gone to San Bernardino to be married and with their husbands had come up the grade early in the morning. The new shoes of one of the brides evidently hurt her feet, so they were soon discarded. Her husband was a man by the name of Taylor. The name of the other bridegroom I have forgotten. Among other guests were Sam Temple, one of the characters in the novel “Ramona” by Helen Hunt Jackson, Sam Sauer and several others from the San Jacinto country. I must not forget to mention a dance we had on the night of the Fourth in the house beside the dirt dam with its jig-saw. Mrs. Pierce with her guests came up in the evening, bringing with them an abundance of cake and other food for a midnight lunch. Mr. Campbell played the violin and Taylor “called off.” See next page
