JSTOR
GENERAL SEARCH
Search Tutorial 1. Welcome to JSTOR! This tutorial will show you how to search for articles in JSTOR, and then print or download them. 2. Let’s start by entering a search term in the Basic Search box. You can use this box on the home page, or go to the basic search interface. This will search all the articles available to you, including data such as title and author, as well as the full-text of the articles. 3. We can select the discipline we’re focusing on, or leave the default setting to search all disciplines. 4. We’ve got lots of articles! We could sort by publication date. We can also search within these results. I’ll add another search term, and check the box to search within these results. 5. To refine the search results even more, let’s use the Advanced Search interface. 6. We have more choices in this interface than we had in Basic Search. We can select a data field to search, such as author or title, or search full-text. We can select AND, OR, or NOT, or do a search for words near each other. Let’s limit the search to full-length articles only. 7. If we want articles published in a certain time-frame, we can enter that here. 8. We can also select the language we want, or keep the default option to search all languages. 9. If we wanted to search only one journal, we could enter that journal title in the box here. 10. We have the choice to select a discipline here, or can expand a discipline to choose individual journals to be searched. 11. Ok, now we’ve got a more refined list of articles. 12. I wonder if there are any pictures of what we’re looking for. Let’s try the “Images in JSTOR” tab. 13. Clicking on the title link takes us to the first page, and here is our highlighted search term.
14. To print or download this article, click on “PDF”. I’ll accept the Terms and Conditions, and then the PDF will open in whatever default program is set up. Adobe Reader is one common program. 15. After the JSTOR cover page, we can see the article pages. To find certain words in the PDF, use the PDF reader’s “find” function. 16. To print or save, use the buttons in the PDF reader, not the ones in the browser. 17. If you have any trouble viewing the PDFs, I recommend downloading the latest version of Adobe Reader, which is free from adobe.com. 18. If you have any questions, see the help documentation, or contact us using the “Contact JSTOR Support” feedback form.
