Under the guidance of Coach Reuben Montano, the Nighthawks triumphed over the GBG Inland Empire squad in the qualifying championship game with a resounding 11-0 victory The Nighthawks remained undefeated throughout the tournament and conceded only one run in their last five games

Chad Horton, the team's standout pitcher, threw a one-hit shutout in the championship game, pitching five innings and striking out five batters "Horton is a player who won't overpower you on the mound, but he'll lull you into a false sense of security," Montano said "He's a solid lefty with good stuff, which will make batters work to get on base " The impressive pitching perf o r m a n c e s o f J o s h To r r e s a n d J o s h Martinez bolstered the Nighthawks' journey to the finals "We've got the right balance of pitching that comes in handy at Connie Mack," Montano added

"Our goal is to keep the Nighthawks going as long as possible," Prieto said, adding,

"And to continue pushing the kids to follow their dreams and excel in whatever they do " With this mission in mind, the Colton Nighthawks will undoubtedly continue to be a formidable presence on the baseball field, an organization that instills pride in all of us Congratulations to the Colton Nighthawks baseball team, and best of luck in Farmington

Music Changing Lives’ State of the Youth Confer ence Foster s Civic Enga gement, Advocacy, and Sustainability via Cr eative Expr ession Among IE Youth

By Manny Sandoval

The Music Changing Lives (MCL) organization, in partnership with the Changing Lives Association and The California Endowment, hosted its second annual State of the Youth Conference from June 22-24 at San Bernardino Valley College The conference, themed "Creative Expression & Sustainability," provided a platform for 45 local students, aged 13-34, from San Bernardino, Rialto, and Colton, to engage in civic advocacy and learn how to generate action against pressing social issues

Josiah Bruny, Founder and CEO of Music Changing Lives said, "The second annual State of the Youth Conference aims to empower the youth in our community by teaching them how to become civically engaged in advocacy and generate action against the most pressing issues in and across our communities today We are striving to provide a platform to equitably uplift the voices of the next generation of leaders addressing racial, economic, and social issues "

The conference offered three tracks with nine workshops, daily meals, live entertainment, art activities, team-building exercises, and valuable college, financial aid, apprenticeships, and employment information Keynote speakers included Michael Wiafe, the newly appointed Education Policy Associate in the Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Mike Africa Jr , an activist, writer, speaker, stage performer, and hip hop artist whose life story is featured in the HBO Max documentary "40 Years a Prisoner "

One of the conference's highlights was the "Art of Sustainability" presentation by Joyce Jong, a Senior Project Manager for the City of Riverside and a third-generation poultry farmer Jong emphasized the importance of sustainability in managing resources, serving communities, and maintaining resources for future generations She also highlighted the significant role of agriculture in the U S economy and job market, contributing $5 billion to the local economy in the Inland Empire alone

Jong warned of the potential impact of climate change on the region, with predictions of an increase in extreme heat days that could affect crop production and lead to desertification She encouraged the younger generation to consider ca- reers in agriculture, mainly as greenhouse technology specialists, citing the availability of scholarships through the Next Gen Farmer Training Program at San Andreas High School in San Bernardino

The conference concluded with an outdoor reception, participant headshots, certificates, and a concert by MCL Despite a smaller turnout this year, participants engaged more actively, benefiting from the intimate setting

The conference's three-day schedule was packed with various workshops designed to equip the participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to become active community contributors

The first day focused on civic engagement, college and career pathways, and health and wellness On the second day, they delved into entrepreneurship, business finance, and generational wealth The final day was dedicated to creative expression, creating NFTs, and leadership

The workshops were divided into three groups based on the participants' ages, ensuring the content was relevant and age-appropriate This year's smaller group size allowed for more personalized interactions and in-depth discussions, leading to a more enriching experience for the participants

The conference's focus on creative expression and sustainability was a strategic initiative addressing racial, economic, and social issues The goal was to create comically engaged leaders through artivism, a combination of art and activism This unique approach allowed the participants to express their thoughts and ideas creatively while advocating for community change

The conference's success was a testament to the power of community engagement and the potential of the youth to bring about positive change As Bruny stated, "I look forward to our annual conferences and changing the narrative towards progress "

The State of the Youth Conference is a shining example of how organizations like Music Changing Lives, the Changing Lives Association, and The California Endowment are making a difference in the lives of young people By providing them with the tools and platform to voice their concerns and ideas, these organizations are helping to shape the next generation of leaders

ReWritten’s T hriving 5K Run f or Father less Youth in San Ber nardino Shar pens Community Enga gement, Runner s Endur e Homeless and DUI Driver

By Manny Sandoval

Downtown San Bernardino was buzzing with both excitement and unexpected adversity last Sunday as nearly 100 runners braved drizzling rain for the second annual "Race for ReWritten," a charity 5K event designed to bring both funding and awareness to underserved and fatherless youth in the community

The nonprofit organization

ReWritten, led by CEO Frank Perez, has been on a mission for the last decade to provide mentoring, academic support, and scholarships for underserved youth The organization primarily focuses on fatherless children, representing 98 percent of its demographic The 5K event marks a significant fundraising opportunity to maintain and expand these crucial programs

"This event goes beyond the funding," Perez explained; his passion for his work is evident in his tone "We want to raise awareness about the issue of fatherless homes and also help breathe life back into downtown San Bernardino "

The runners embarked on their 3 1-mile journey from the front of the Enterprise Building, looping twice around a route that spanned 15 city blocks While last year's event faced a blistering heat of 98 degrees, this year's participants enjoyed the refreshing respite of a drizzle "Everyone was happy with the drizzle," Perez noted

In a strong display of community support, Councilman Damon Alexander and San Bernardino City School Board Member Felicia Alexander were among the participants, contributing to the nearly 100 runners and 130 attendees

But the event wasn't without its challenges The route brought attendees face-to-face with some of San Bernardino's ongoing problems Participants ran past homeless individuals, with reported incidents of harassment and visible signs of squalor along the path

Most shockingly, an intoxicated driver attempted to charge through the event barricades but was swiftly intercepted by San Bernardino police officers present

In light of the difficulties, Perez remains optimistic and deeply committed to his cause As a person who grew up without a father, he understands many of these children's struggles "I want to let these kids know there is a God and a father that loves them It's tough to have clarity and perspective if you're struggling with brokenness It's difficult to do anything with your life," he shared, adding that he has seen ReWritten youth overcome these odds, graduating from college, buying homes, and pursuing successful careers Perez is not only driven by his own experiences but also by his faith As the head of a faithbased organization, he believes in the healing power of religion and hopes to pass this healing on to the children he mentors

Despite the event's challenges, the run's outcome was overwhelmingly positive A striking 70 percent of attendees were from outside San Bernardino, including a 79-year-old participant who traveled from Indio because ReWritten's cause inspired him

Other participants came from neighboring towns like Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands, Colton, and Rialto, highlighting the expanding influence of ReWritten's work Perez enthusiastically shared that this turnout is a testament to the growing support for ReWritten's cause and a sign that people are excited about their work for children with absent fathers

"We're called ReWritten because anyone growing up in a single-parent home has the odds stacked against them," Perez said "If you come alongside these young people, we can rewrite their future "

This year's Race for ReWritten signaled a triumph for the organization's mission and posed an important reminder about the pressing social issues San Bernardino still faces Amidst the trials and challenges, however, Perez's dedication remains unshaken In his vision, the children served by ReWritten and the city of San Bernardino share a common thread of resilience and potential

The event's threefold aim - to raise funds, raise awareness, and rejuvenate downtown San Bernardino - was met with enthusiasm from the community Despite the hurdles, the spirit of camaraderie and shared commitment to the cause persisted, mirroring ReWritten's mission to transform adversity into opportunity

"Just as we work to shift the trajectory of the lives of these young people, we also aim to help shift the trajectory of downtown," Perez explained "It requires everyone doing their part and coming into the trenches to make a difference "

The experiences and stories shared at the event will continue to inspire and foster community engagement, shedding light on ReWritten's tireless efforts in reshaping the lives of the children they serve and the very fabric of their community

For those who want to support ReWritten and its mission, more information is available on its website, Rewritten org, or their Instagram, @rewrittenofficial While the road ahead might be challenging, Perez's leadership and the growing support for ReWritten hint at a hopeful future for the city of San Bernardino and the young people it nurtures, promising that, with collective effort and dedication, their stories can indeed be rewritten for the better

In 2023, the San Bernardino County Library celebrated four distinguished National Association of Counties (NACo) awards for outstanding service to both its staff as well as the general public Unsurprisingly, the library attributed its drive to the principals outlined in San Bernardino County’s Countywide Vision, a guiding light for its policies, practices, and protocol: CAO Vision – San Bernardino CountyWide Vision (sbcounty gov)

First, the library received an award for its unique interviewing structure During the transition into post-pandemic realities, the San Bernardino County Library, as with many employers, saw an increase in the number of vacancies due to resignations, retirements, and other life changes With retention in mind, the library worked to fill vacanciesof varying capacities throughout its 32 library branch locations and administration office In the past, the library would schedule first interviews on one day, and second or final interviews on a separate day This scheduling process often led to second interviews that were scheduled one to two weeks following the first interview, at times resulting in losing candidates to other employers The additional time for the second interview would also delay the completion of onboarding paperwork, background checks, and fingerprinting, which caused the hiring process to be slow and prolonged

Additionally, the extended interview and onboarding process deterred quality candidates who sought to begin work immediately To remain competitive with other organizations and move to hire within a shorter timeframe, the San Bernardino County Library implemented a new process of conducting second interviews on the same day as first interviews The new procedure resulted in the hiring process (application to onboarding) taking two to three months, whereas in the past the process could take four to six months The implementation of this process has resulted in the hiring of higher quality candidates due to the library’s ability to compete with private sector hiring timelines

In addition, the library received a NACo award for its orientation program, entitled

Assembl ymember Sabrina Cer vantes Secur es $3 Million to Suppor t the Launch of the Inland Empir e LGBTQ Resource Center Power ed by Tr uEvolution

Community News

Sabrina Cervantes (D-Riverside) announced today that she secured more than $3 million in the state budget signed by Governor Gavin Newsom to support the launch of the Inland Empire LGBTQ Resource Center, powered by TruEvolution, with locations in the city of Riverside and Southwest Riverside county, as well as a first-of-its-kind fund in the region to invest in inland LGBTQ community organizations with capacity building training, and programming support The centers will serve residents throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties and provide a safe space and community facilities for LGBTQ led and serving groups to gather and meet

The launch of the Inland Empire LGBTQ Resource Center comes at a critical time in the fight for LGBTQ equality across the country and locally The Supreme Court just dealt a blow to LGBT rights by allowing certain businesses to refuse to provide services for same-sex weddings According to a report released by the California Attorney General in June, hate crimes against LGBTQ Californians have risen by 29% between 2021 and 2022 Legislation introduced in California this year also took aim at outing transgender and nonbinary students and an Inland city’s school board voted to reject including LGBTQ leader Harvey Milk in social studies curriculum

Co-founded in 2023 by Inland Empire natives and community leaders Assemblymember Cervantes, TruEvolution CEO Gabriel Maldonado, and Equality California Advisory Board Member Jesse Melgar, the Inland Empire LGBTQ Resource Center will be headquartered at the Project Legacy campus in Downtown Riverside and as an initiative of TruEvolution A second site will open in Southwest Riverside County next year – a part of the region that lacks strong infrastructure and support for LGBTQ individuals and families

“The new Inland Empire LGBTQ Resource Center powered by TruEvolution and the services provided in Southwest Riverside County will stand as a bulwark against the persecution, discrimination, and violence still faced by the LGTBQ+ community on a daily basis in our region,” said Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes “I want to thank TruEvolution for being essen- tial partners in securing this $3 063 million in state funding, and in fighting for the equal rights and dignity for the LGBTQ+ community in the Inland Empire

“For years, TruEvolution has worked alongside our sisters and brothers in the LGBTQ community to fight for our communities in a region that lacks sufficient support,” said TruEvolution CEO Gabriel Maldonado “Under Assemblymember Cervantes’ transformative leadership, we will not only be able to open an LGBTQ Resource Center in downtown Riverside, but will also open one in Southwest Riverside County where we know members of our community lack strong support We will support anyone and everyone – in both Riverside and San Bernardino counties –who need it

“This funding is urgent and long overdue, especially as the Inland Empire’s LGBTQ community continues to grow while infrastructure and support for our communities hasn’t,” said Inland Empire LGBTQ Resource Center co-founder Jesse Melgar

The funding will support the following:

Inland Empire LGBTQ Resource Center Riverside Headquarters - $1 million will cover construction and renovation costs at the downtown Riverside headquarters located at TruEvolution’s new Project Legacy campus, which will also serve as a community meeting space for LGBTQ community organizations throughout the region Funding will support staffing needs, the creation of an LGBTQ community meeting space, and capital investments for the community, such as computer and media lab use for LGBTQ organizations

Inland Empire LGBTQ Resource Center, Southwest Riverside County - $1 million will support securing a community resource center to be opened This will also cover staffing needs and support for LGBTQ communities throughout Southwest Riverside County

Inland Empire LGBTQ Resource Center Community Grant Initiative - $1 million will help seed a new fund to support capacity building for the limited number of emerging LGBTQ community organizations serving Riverside and San Bernardino counties
