olton High School junior Thomas Lemus has loved art and drawing since he was a young child.

THIS WEEK Gloria’s Cor ner Pg. 3

Now Thomas’s incredible talents have earned him a spot at the 2019 California Mock Trial competition, which will take place March 22-24 in Sacramento. While the San Bernardino County Mock Trial champion team from Cajon High School and other top teams in the state battle it out in the courtroom, Thomas and other artists will be quietly sketching the scenes unfolding before them. “I think it’s cool,” Thomas said. “It’s a little surreal, but I think it’s cool to rep Colton.”

Thomas is the only courtroom artist from San Bernardino County headed to the state contest and is the first Colton High School artist to make it this far in the competition. A total of 17

artists competed for the chance to represent San Bernardino County at the state contest. Thomas’s foray into courtroom art happened by accident. He said he joined the Mock Trial team this year to be with friends. Colton High School teacher Lucy Leyva, the team’s advisor, said she also encouraged Thomas to join. “I saw his art and was like, can you be our artist?” Thomas said he has loved art as far back as he could remember and is a self-taught artist. He recalls watching Sponge Bob Square Pants cartoons and stopping them every few seconds so he could learn to draw the character by examining each frame. Mrs. Leyva believes that it is Thomas’s attention to detail that helps set him apart from competitors. Noticing the subtle nuances of what he sees is critiLemus, cont. on next pg.

hile Colton High School unveiled its new Memorial Stadium, a charismatic and energetic mascot stole the show. Yogi, Colton High School’s mascot, has received a full makeover donated by the residents of Colton and Colton High School alumnus. With a look that pays homage to the original Yogi, Colton residents were buzzing with excitement. Two years ago, Leno and Liz Moreno, owners of Leno’s Rico Taco, went to support Colton Youth football team at an away game in Indio. While cheering on their hometown, the Moreno’s noticed the poor state Yogi the mascot was in, especially in comparison to other mascots in attendance. They decided something needed to be done and set to work. They went to Colton High School Principal Joda Murphy and presented a plan to donate to Colton High School a revamped mascot. Principal Murphy was overjoyed with the idea and

offered to help fund it but the Moreno’s insisted on having it privately funded. “We wanted it to be privately funded because the school funding should be used for the sports programs which have a long wish list,” said Leno Moreno. At first, they attempted a GoFundMe Page, but it didn’t yield results after six months. That’s when the Moreno’s took to a more direct approach by calling Colton Alumni, local business owners, and residents personally; in one day they reached their $5,000-dollar goal. “I’m an alumnus of Colton High school, and anything to help its people is a worthy cause,” said Gary Grossich, owner of Nickelodeon Pizza. Manny Ayala, Owner of Trade Print, created a custom design for Yogi allowing it to really come to life for Colton residents. The design was sent to a company in Canada where it would be tailored to Ayala’s specifications, then shipped. It was set to arrive Yogi, cont. on next page

ast month, Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced the recipients of Prop 56 grants to reduce illegal sales of tobacco which included $798,795 for the Cities of Colton and Fontana in the 47th Assembly District. The Department of Justice’s Tobacco Grant funds will support programs to reduce illegal tobacco sales, particularly to minors. This announcement comes after Assemblymember Eloise Reyes (D-San Bernardino) sent a letter of support for the cities’ grant application to the California Department of Justice. “I am so pleased that our cities are taking advantage of

the resources available through the State of California,” said Assemblymember Reyes. “I continue to stay committed to doing my part in helping our community gain access to these funds.” The Department of Justice’s Tobacco Grant Program is funded by Proposition 56, the California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act of 2016. Proposition 56 raised the cigarette tax by $2.00 per pack, with an equivalent increase on other tobacco products. Funded activities include retailer training programs, decoy operations, youth outreach and prevention programs, tobacco retail li-

cense inspections, training for sworn peace officers, the installation of vapor and smoke detectors, and more. The Colton Police Department will hire a school resource officer to educate, promote and deter students from using tobacco products. In addition, the police department will also install signage and vape detectors in schools and conduct decoy stings at retail establishments. The Fontana Police Department will identify and target problematic retailers, conduct enforcement and post-enforcement operations, conduct officer and retailer education classes and conduct intensive youth outreach.

he Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched a new app that gives consumers a modernized Medicare experience with direct access on a mobile device to some of the most-used content on Medicare.gov. The new “What’s Covered” app lets people with Original Medicare, caregivers and others quickly see whether Medicare covers a specific medical item or service. Consumers can now use their mobile device to more easily get accurate, consistent Original Medicare coverage information in the doctor’s office, the hospital, or anywhere else they use their mobile device. This new app is the next in a suite of products designed to give consumers more access and control over their Medicare information.” CMS created the app to meet the needs of the growing population

of people with Medicare. The Medicare population is projected to increase almost 50 percent by 2030—from 54 million beneficiaries in 2015 to more than 80 million beneficiaries in 2030. As of 2016, about two-thirds of Medicare beneficiaries indicate they use the Internet daily or almost daily (65 percent). Questions about what Medicare covers are some of the most frequent inquiries that CMS receives. There are approximately 15 million page views annually for covcontenton erage-related Medicare.gov and 1-800 MEDICARE receives over 3 million coverage-related calls each year. CMS launched the eMedicare initiative in 2018 to empower beneficiaries with cost and quality information. Other tools in the eMedicare suite include: Enhanced interactive online decision support to help people better understand and evaluate their Medicare coverage options and costs between Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Broadway at the Gardens’ Production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” to Sweep Audiences Away at the Lewis Family Playhouse February 15th – 24th

roadway at the Gardens presents an unforgettable production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, featuring songs from Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz’s sweeping Academy Award-nominated soundtrack as well as new numbers written for the live stage musical. Showcasing a cast of 20, a choir of 24, and a live 12-piece orchestra, this extravagant production will run for two weekends February 15th – 24th. Gold Level tickets are $30.00 for General and $28.00 for Seniors/Youth. All Platinum Level tickets are $35.00. Based on Victor Hugo’s gothic novel set in 15th century Paris, The Hunchback of Notre Dame tells the story of the beautiful, compassionate gypsy, Esmé ralda and the gentle, but tragically deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, Quasimodo. This powerful tale of appearances versus reality, fate versus free will, and love versus lust accompanied by a lush, soaring score have rendered this production a timeless classic. Peter Parnell’s new book utilizes story theatre techniques and features many of Hugo’s passages verbatim, making the musical truer to the original novel than its Disney animated counterpart. While the musical is distinctly darker than the film, it still features beloved Menken and Schwartz songs including “The Bells of Notre Dame,” “Out There,” “Topsy Turvy,” “God Help the Outcasts,” and “Hell-

fire.” Director Marla Ladd and Music Director Kevin Gasio make their Lewis Family Playhouse debut. Choreographer Michael Ramon Lopez and Orchestral Conductor Allen Everman round out the Artistic Team. Keegan Michael Riojas stars as Quasimodo with Ron Hastings as Dom Claude Frollo, Andrea Somera as Esmeralda, Jordan Killion as Phoebus De Martin, and Alex Allen as Clopin Trouillefou. Supporting this powerful cast are Timothy Jackson as Jehan Frollo, Jessica Ordaz as Florika, Camilo Castro as Father Dupin, Steven Teats as Frederic Charlus, Frank Rodriguez as King Louis XI, Amanda Lee as Madame, and Daniel Berlin as St. Aphrodisius. The ensemble features Jaylen Baham, Cassandra Costa, Noelle Howe, Gayle Jett, Jenna Minor, Arianna Nelson, Christopher Nevarez, Melanie Rabajante, and Isaiah Ruiz. This production includes a breathtaking choir comprised of Los Osos High School Choir Members under the direction of Bethany Encina, as well as professional adult vocalists. There are two weekends of The Hunchback of Notre Dame performances at Lewis Family Playhouse, with show times on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. Call the Box Office at (909) 477- 2752 today.

The American way of war: Evolution stops here America does what it wants. This is obvious, except it’s also monstrously unnerving. Let’s at least add some quote marks: “America does what it wants — this secretly defined, self-obsessed, unelected entity that purports to be the United States of America, all 325 million of us, but is, in fact, a narrowly focused amalgam of generals, politicians and corporate elites who value only one thing: global dominance, from now to eternity. Indeed, they’re capable of imagining nothing else, which is the truly scary part. Until this changes, “peace is a feel-good delusion and “disarmament (nuclear and otherwise) is the butt of a joke. The American empire may be collapsing, but the war games continue. So I realized with a sudden start as I read Nick Turse’s analysis of a collection of U.S. military documents, which the TomDispatch website got hold of via the Freedom of Information Act. The documents contained a detailed description of the 33rd annual Joint Land, Air, and Sea Strategic Special Program, “an elaborate war game, Turse explains, “carried out in 2016 by students and faculty from the U.S. military’s war colleges, the training grounds for its future generals and admirals. The war game was wrapped around a fantasy future of “dystopian dangers, set in 2020, in which, “as the script for the war game put it, ‘lingering jealousy and distrust of American power and national interests have made it politically and culturally difficult for the United States to act unilaterally.’ In other words, as Turse explains, quoting the war game’s summary, the threat to America’s near-future security is completely a matter of maintaining its global hegemony in the face of scientific and military advances “by both state and non-state actors that “have increasingly constricted U.S. freedom of action. There’s nothing particularly surprising here, yet something jolted me into a new level of shock and awe, you might say, about the deep state apparatus that controls the national direction. There’s nothing in this controlling consciousness devoted to creating — or imagining — a world without nuclear weapons or a world free of war and poverty. That’s just not part of the future “America has

any interest in envisioning. The next war is utterly unquestioned. “Us vs. themâ€? is utterly unquestioned. There will always be enemies. What would we do without them? While the invisible state may fear losing its global dominance, it seems to be completely in control of its domestic dominance. And peace is out of the picture, at least the evolving concept of that word: peace that transcends militarism and is not based on armed enforcement. As long as the generals and war profiteers have it their way, peace is merely the lull between wars or, even more cynically, that brief pause while the combatants reload. In other words, we are moving into the future committed — financially, politically, ideologically — to continuing to do what has failed in the past: wage war, dominate, win. And in countless ways, we are losing. The empire is collapsing. The consequences of armed dominance are eating us alive and destroying Planet Earth. But no matter. As long as we’re not aware that we’re causing our own destruction, we (I mean “weâ€?) can continue to do so, in the process reaping not merely profit but a sense of purpose. “Two years after the war game was conducted,â€? Turse writes, “in a time of almost metronomic domestic mass killings, President Trump continues to spotlight the supposedly singular danger posed by ‘inadequately vetted people’ in the U.S., although stovetops and ovens, hot air balloons, and burning pajamas are far more deadly to Americans.â€? Apparently our national sense of identity would collapse without an enemy, and the enemy du jour is the terrorist (no longer the communist, no longer the “savageâ€?). So we’re not only fighting endless wars across Africa and the Middle East, we’re intensifying our deportation of “illegalsâ€? and amping up “border security,â€? all in order to keep America safe. One reason the nation’s leaders are able to keep waging wars that do not, in fact, keep America safe is because the harm they cause is almost totally borne by the other. And as long as the messy details are seldom in the news, Americans need not let their awareness of government policy stray beyond the clichĂŠs of patriotism.

Regarding Mexican border security, for instance, the Trump administration has implemented a policy of separating children from parents seeking asylum in order to send a Keep Out message to other would-be immigrants. The cruelty of such a policy has been magnified by a recent ACLU report, based on documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, showing widespread abuse of children in U.S. custody. And in point of fact, the abuses are pre-Trump. The documents cover 2009-2014, during the Obama years. Dominance and racism may be more blatant under the current president than they've been for a while, but they have always been part of national policy. According to the report: “The documents show numerous cases involving federal officials’ verbal, physical and sexual abuse of migrant children; the denial of clean drinking water and adequate food; failure to provide necessary medical care; detention in freezing, unsanitary facilities; and other violations of federal law and policy and international law. The documents provide evidence that U.S. officials were aware of these abuses as they occurred, but failed to properly investigate, much less to remedy, these abuses. Abuses listed in the report include children kicked in the ribs, punched in the head, shot with a stun gun (causing a boy “to fall to the ground, shaking, with his eyes rolling back in his head) and run over with a patrol vehicle. A pregnant minor “was denied medical attention when she reported pain, which preceded a stillbirth. A 16year-old girl was subjected to a search in which they “forcefully spread her legs and touched her private parts so hard that she screamed. My God, it was like they placed these children in Gitmo! These are the war games we play that aren’t games, but real-world actions. From cruelty at the border to nuclear testing, a philosophy of dominance over the enemy creates nothing but a poisoned planet and endless war. Paradoxically, a primary qualification for being a national leader is not knowing this.

November 30, 3340 B.C.E. (Before the Christian Era.) This was at least a thousand years before Abraham’s leaving UR of the Chaldees. A total solar eclipse was sighted in the western part of what is now called Europe. The discovery of charred human bones beneath a mega-like monument caused a series of mysteries of ghostly spirits.

anuary 20, 2019, Maximum Eclipse at 9:12 PM, Earth, Moon, Sun, Full Eclipse ended at 9:43 PM. Time lapse 31 minutes; Spectacular, Great, Magnificent, Amazing, Tremendous; “The Heavens Declare The Glory Of GOD.” “The Solar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun in such a way that the Sun is totally blocked from view.” “Lunar Eclipse only occurs on the full moon night which means that the Moon is on the other side of the Earth from the Sun.” From time immemorial, Eclipses were viewed as super natural phenomena. Through the centuries various civilizations developed sophisticated calendars. For example, Aristotle was convinced the Earth was round; and of course, Einstein proved his theory of relativity. He was convinced by the various Eclipses. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon turns a reddish color, because the only light seen is refracted through the Earth’s shadow. Total lunar eclipses are often called “blood” moons. It is extremely important to remember that solar and lunar eclipses have figured prominently in human history. Here are a few

They were advanced astronomers. They calculated the solar year, lunar cycles, periodicity of the planets, solstices and equinoxes with amazing accuracy. “They were able to readily predict lunar eclipses, and had calculated a pattern of dates for solar eclipses.” Solar eclipses were known as chi ibal kinto. It is translated as “moon to eat the sun.” By the way, they predicted the solar eclipse several times.

On October 22, 2134 B.C.E. a solar eclipse was recorded in the Shu Ching, an ancient Chinese book of documents. At the time it was believed that a solar eclipse was the result of a large dragon eating the Sun. On May 28, 585 B.C.E., according to the Greek historian Herodotus, a total solar eclipse brought about a cease fire between two warring nations, the Medes and the Lydians. The sky turned dark and the Sun disappeared behind the Moon. It was interpreted that the gods wanted a truce. Then, in 32 A.D. in Matthew 27:45 and Mark 15:33, the Christian Gospels state the sky darkened at the death of Jesus. The event coincided with a solar eclipse. The date of the eclipse (32 A.D.) was used by Christians to pinpoint the time of the death of Jesus. On May 5, 840 A.D. the son of Charlemagne inherited his father’s kingdom and tremendous crises. Louis believed a solar eclipse was punishment for his sins and he died. This brought about the historical Treaty of Verdun in 843 A.D. Then on February 29, 1504, twelve years after Christopher Columbus landed in El Salvador, wood worms attacked his ship which caused great leaks and forced him to stop at Jamaica.

Hoping to impress the Jamaicans he had consulted his almanac and noticed that a solar eclipse was on the horizon. When it happened. Columbus told the natives God was displeased with them. When the eclipse occurred, they bowed to Columbus, feeding and caring for him and his crew. In turn Columbus named the previous land, El Salvador (Savior). It is important that any article about solar eclipses include the Maya indigenous Indians. Historians, conservatively place their origin between 8 and 10 thousand years. (B.C.E.) Way before the Aztecs, Olmecs and Toltecs, the Maya were an advanced civilization. They dominated southern Mexico-especially the Yucatan, all of Central America, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Belize, Costa Rica and Panama. A few Mayan temples were: Monte Alban, Chechen Itza, Caracul, Tikal, Uxmal, Palenque, Tulum, Caba, Bonampak, Coban. I’ve been to eight of them and

climbed the steps of their temples. In addition, they built the pyramids of Teotihuacan. Interestingly they had highways that connected the great Mayan centers. Their civilizations began to crumble around 4-500 A.D. as the Aztecs came into prominence. This was followed by Hernan Cortez’ domination and then the New Spain era from 1521-1821; 300 years. Spain rejected Spanish women to join the male military and this brought in the MestizosIndians mixed with Spaniards. Back to the Mayan heyday. “The ancient Mayas were the most advanced people of their time. Every one of the aforementioned Maya centers had an observatory. They rigorously studied the Sun and Moon.” Professor Payson Sheets of the University of Colorado and an Anthropologist, states, “The Maya were the most literate of any new world civilization by a long shot.” When the Spanish soldiers captured their villages, they believed the Mayan were civil pagans. So,

The ancient Mayans were also extremely aware of mathematics. They were the first to use the zero. The Muslims copied them in the 7th country. They would diligently record their history, including the kings when crowned, equinoxes and solstices and solar and lunar eclipses. However, there were two areas where the Mayans were off base. “They did not know that the Sun is 400 times larger than the Moon and 400 times farther away.” One more basic thought regarding the Sun, Moon and Earth. Galileo and Copernicus. The year 2016 marked the 400th anniversary of the Catholic Church’s investigation of Galileo as a heretic. He and Copernicus were both excommunicated from the Church. The reason? They both believed, and wrote the idea that the Earth was NOT the center of the universe-as religion said. Their views violated canonical law. Their theory was simple that the Earth revolved around the Sun and NOT the reverse. By the way, a few years ago they both were absolved of their heresy. Amen. Selah. So be it.

al State San Bernardino has appointed Native American educator and advocate Vincent Whipple as the university’s newly created director of Tribal Relations to increase the college-going rates and success of Native American students. Whipple, who most recently served as the director of Recreation, Education and Youth Services for the Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians in Northern San Diego County, will also lead CSUSB’s communication, engagement opportunities and special project alliances with all federally and/or state recognized tribal nations in California. “We are excited at having Dr. Whipple join the campus as our new director of Tribal Relations,” said CSUSB President Tomás D. Morales. “Establishing this position is a direct response to the lead recommendation by the Task Force for Native American Recruitment, a group impaneled as part of my presidential initiative to increase native enrollment here and at other universities statewide. I am firmly committed to making the recruitment, enrollment, retention and success of Native American students a high priority.” Whipple said his goal is to convince Native Americans that the university is there to help, to support and to develop lasting partnerships and friendships. He said

one of the toughest tasks he will face is gaining and developing the trust of Native Americans and tribes due to the history of negative treatment of Native Americans involving racism and genocide. “We want to let tribes know that there are resources here to help in the success of Native students,” said Whipple. “CSUSB is a serious partner in for the long haul to help.” Whipple said the university has shown its determination to work with Native American people that includes: creating the First Peoples Center in 2017 dedicated to supporting the academic achievement and personal success of indigenous students, serving as the hosting site of the San Manuel Pow Wow and hosting California Native American Day in September. Last September, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians awarded an unprecedented three-year, $960,000 gift to CSUSB to increase the college-going rates and success of Native American students. The grant’s goal will be to increase Native American student enrollment by 50 percent. The grant will also sponsor two enrollment and outreach coordinators focused on building a pipeline from all high schools statewide to

CSUSB, other California State University campuses or a University of California campus. Whipple has served in a number of positions supporting and advocating education for Native Americans that includes: • Cultural Resources Manager for Rincon Band of Mission Indians; • Director of Education for the Fernandeno Tataviam Band of Mission Indians; • Tribal Partnership Specialist for the Los Angeles Regional Census Center; • Administrator for the Morongo Band of Mission Indians; • Associate Instructor on American Indian Dance at UC Riverside; • Coordinator for the Native American Student Center at Cal Poly Pomona;

ep. Pete Aguilar (D-San Bernardino) announced the Congressional App Challenge winners for California’s 31st Congressional District. Richard Hu and James Yang, a senior and a junior at Redlands High School, were selected as this year’s winners for their app, Hex Rockets. Hex Rockets is a game designed to help players learn hexadecimal arithmetic with the goal of making STEM learning more fun and engaging for play-

ers. The contest was judged by Dr. Tony Coulson, Director of the Cyber Security Center at California State University, San Bernardino. “I was proud to host the Congressional App Challenge for Inland Empire students for the first time this year. We know that the jobs of the 21st Century are going to require STEM educations, and the Congressional App Challenge is a great way to get local students

excited about STEM. Richard and James really impressed us with their app because it was designed to help more students enjoy STEM subjects, encouraging more of their peers to look into the field,” said Rep. Aguilar. “STEM will likely dominate future careers, yet math consistently tops polls of least favorite school subjects. As longtime math competitors, James and I wanted to change this mindset towards

ucts that came out of this challenge. Hex Rockets showed how these students could leverage different parts of technology and put them together in a creative and fun way,” said Dr. Tony Coulson. As the winners from California’s 31st District, both Richard and James are invited the #HouseofCode reception in Washington, DC, where they will have a chance to meet the winners from other participating Congressional Districts. In addition, the winners will be given $250 in Amazon Web Services credits and a description of their app can be seen on a digital display in the US Capitol for one year.

xpansion is vital for the Emergency Department (ED) at Redlands Community Hospital. The expansion and renovation will almost triple the department’s size to 22,000 square feet and allow the hospital to care for 70,000 patients a year. This means a better patient experience and more lives saved. As Phase 1 of the expansion has concluded, Redlands Community Hospital opened its new emergency department entrance on Terracina Boulevard to the public

on January 23rd. The completion of phase one included relocating Wound Care and Rehabilitation Services to new areas, opening a new entrance and parking for the ED in the front of the hospital on Terracina Boulevard. The second phase will include the remodeling of the existing ED space that will nearly triple the size of the ED and provide additional private rooms, critical care

rooms, and a dedicated psychiatric and support care space. The third phase will include a spacious, brighter entry plaza. The area will include a coffee bar and a larger gift shop. The Redlands community continues to grow steadily, and the number of patient visits to the Emergency Department has increased every year since its construction in the 1980s. Currently the hospital sees nearly 53,000 patients in the ED annually and the

expansion will almost triple the size of the department to 22,000 square feet and allow us to care for 70,000 patients a year. The new ED will feature cutting edge technology, increase the number of beds from 21 to 33, speedier admission and triage, and improved patient privacy. Construction is expected to be completed in 2020. “As our community continues to grow, there was a clear need to in-

crease our capacity for health care services,” said Pam Allen, director of emergency services. “We’re thankful to our generous donors for helping us make this much needed expansion a reality.” Redlands Community Hospital is located at 350 Terracina Blvd., Redlands, CA 92373. ithout a car of her own, Army Veteran Melissa Hooper of Riverside has been juggling a fulltime job with a full-time course load in her goal to set an example by becoming the first in her family to earn a college degree. Relief in in sight. Hooper and her four-year-old daughter received the priceless gift of independence and freedom when they were presented with keys to a newly refurbished car from Caliber Collision in San Bernardino and Encompass Insurance on Tuesday, Jan. 22, as a thank for her military service. “(As a) first generation MexicanAmerican and the first in my family to go to college, I am emboldened to show my family that their work ethic, their love, and their support helped change my life,” said Hooper. Hooper has earned four Associates of Science degrees from Riverside Community College

and was recently accepted into California State Polytechnic University, majoring in Management and Human Resources. In addition to her academics, Hooper was president of the Student Veterans Association, helping to win a $10,000 grant to revamp the Veterans Resource Center. Her hundreds of hours of volunteer service earned her the Riverside Community College Student of The Year Award in 2016. The car donation from Encompass and Caliber is part of the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides program in which collision industry businesses team up to repair and donate cars to individuals in need of reliable transportation. Over the past six years, Caliber Collision and its industry partners have repaired and donated nearly 300 cars valued at over $4 million to individuals in need of reliable transportation.

Research ecologist Chad Hanson will discuss how we can create far more fire-safe communities. He will also discuss why the current fire management focus on back-

country fire suppression and commercial logging is based on myths that are not only harming habitat in wildlands but are also dangerously diverting resources and attention away from protecting communities from wildland fire. Last spring Chad was elected to a three-year term on the Sierra Club national Board of Directors, receiving the highest number of votes among the five who were elected. He has a Ph.D. in ecology from UC Davis and is a research

High school students who participated in the nine-month Young Legislators program were exposed to civic engagement, public policy and professional life skills.

D

uring Assemblymember Reyes’ first Legislative term, 59 students who reside throughout the 47th Assembly District have completed and graduated from her Young Legislators Program. The program focuses on three main themes: civic engagement, public policy and professional life skills with the end goal of professionally empowering students and showing those with an interest in Civil Service what that career truly looks like.

Students who have participated in the program have had the opportunity to meet and discuss policy and the inner workings of government from State Treasurer John Chiang, San Bernardino Community College District Trustee Frank Reyes, San Bernardino City Unified School Board of Education President Abigail Medina, Advocacy training from Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice and Financial Literacy training

from Bank of America. At the completion of the program, students travel to the Capitol in Sacramento, attend committee hearings, meet current and former Fellows in the Capitol and engage in various forms of professional skills development. While in the Capitol, students also present legislative proposals on pressing issues they see in and around their communities. “Participation and engagement is

the foundation of our democracy. Providing a space for our young students to be empowered is one of the highlights of my role in representing the 47th Assembly District,” said Assemblymember Reyes. “It is my hope that our Young Legislators will complete the program and be equipped with knowledge that will benefit them throughout their lives and to also nurture an interest in their government, not to mention civil service.”

The Young Legislators is a ninemonth program to provide high school students who live, study or volunteer in the 47th District with leadership development training and an opportunity to discuss important youth related issues occurring in the community. Assemblymember Reyes is currently accepting applications from High School Sophomores and Juniors for the next class of Young Legislators on her website at www.asm.ca.gov/reyes.
