fter 32 years a new Miss Colton will finally be crowned on Sunday, May 19 at Colton High’s Whitmer Auditorium. The announcement to revive the pageant took place during the Rotary Club Mayor’s Breakfast last week. According to Rotary President Rosa Granado-Dominguez, the club has been discussing the prospect of bringing the pageant back to the community for over two years, and recently took the leap to move forward with the endeavor. “We are passionate to bring (the pageant) back to the city,” noted. Granado-Dominguez “There are so many beautiful girls here and the city needs to be represented properly.” Rotary is seeking contestants between the ages of 17 - 25 who reside in the city or unincorporated Bloomington for at least the

The current location is on the corner of East E Street and Colton Avenue, and has been sitting there, in relative obscurity, for approximately five years. At that time, the Miller Honey Company closed their business operation and decided to donate the caboose to the city.

he Rialto Host Lions Club is on the prowl in the City of Colton looking for people who have a heart to serve others and who would like to be part of bringing a Lions Club to the Hub City in the very near future.

The vision of the Lions Club is to be “the global leader in community and humanitarian service.” Their focus throughout the world lie in many areas, including SightFirst, their effort to restore sight and prevent blindness. Members put an emphasis on encouraging youth, providing grants and scholarships through different programs that include speech and presentation skills, alongside a youth membership in the Lions Club (called Leos) dedicated to making a difference in their communities and the world abroad. Disaster relief, humanitarian efforts, diabetes, hunger, environmental concerns and childhood cancer are also areas given attention by the Lions Club membership. A meeting was held in February in Colton to determine the level of interest for bringing a chapter of The Lions Club to Colton and The Rialto Host Lions have scheduled a second meeting to be held on

Monday, March 4, to begin at 6:00 p.m. at Denny’s Restaurant, 160 West Valley Boulevard. They would like for anyone who is civic minded to come and consider this opportunity for the City of Colton. Kathy McCracken, president of the Rialto Host Lions Club, is especially excited to meet with Colton organizations that could benefit by having a Lions Club in town. “We will be able to bring our projects like the vision screenings and eyeglass collections to this area and serve the people of Colton in what we have in other nearby communities,” McCracken said. “But what’s really important is that we learn about what is important to the people of Colton, and to learn how a Lions Club can better fit the needs of this town. We hope those who are knowledgeable of the needs of the Colton population will join us in bringing a Lions Club Chapter to serve the people here.” If you are interested in finding out more information about Lions Club and would like to consider helping bring its humanitarian efforts to the City of Colton, please attend the meeting on March 4. Several reasons were presented at the council meeting and included creating destination location for the city, perpetuating the train history, enhancing elementary school tours, creating downtown pedestrian synergy, utilizing an already made landscaping, better security, complying with the Colton Downtown Design Manual (2016), and creating opportunities for future growth. Resident Jackie Ficarotta states, “The museum location is a great place for the caboose. It will bring

back people and activity to the downtown.” One of the talking points given by Dr. G was the idea of “pedestrian synergy.” Just north of the site is a gasoline station and convenience market, across the street to the west is a bank and retail stores, and to the south is a church and medical services center. “Many people come to this block to shop and do business” explains Dr. G, “the caboose will enhance the museum offerings, and give residents, and visitors a ‘destination’ place downtown to visit, relax and shop.” “Bringing the caboose to the museum will bring more people downtown,” says Robert Cruz, Pastor of the Rayos de Luz Church on La Cadena Ave. The Colton Area Museum Board of Directors discussed this possibility at the recent Feb 6 meeting. The vote was unanimous in support of bringing the caboose to the museum. President Mike Murphy

said, “the fact that we can offer the security and education in one location, makes the museum the best location.” Residents are encouraged to contact the council members and let them know how they feel about the location of the caboose. The council office number is 3705060 and council member emails are listed on the city website. In addition, the next council meeting will be March 5 and residents are able to voice their opinion during public comment. The CAM is open to the public providing the opportunity to see the many outstanding displays of Colton history. Book release party for local author at SB Public Library

ocal author Columbus Daniel will be coming to the San Bernardino Public Library to present his new book, Corporate House on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 from 1 – 4 PM. Columbus Daniel tells a compelling “rags to riches” story that ranges from coast to coast and even into Canada. If there were a genre for autobiographical fiction, Corporate House would lead the list. The main character, Danny, shares trials, mishaps, misdeeds, struggles, triumphs, and snares of growing up in U.S.A.’s south and admits being confounded when he had to adapt to other zones.

While much of the story is autobiographical, it doesn’t necessarily reveal the final product: a man whose faith makes him fearless, who doesn’t know the meaning of the word can’t, whose mind wraps around problems and sees solutions where others see blockades, who sees work as a challenge to be conquered rather than an impediment to reaching a goal. Corporate House is a success story that leads the reader through tears and horror to laughter and relief as Danny struggles through failures to successes and through trials to finalities as he learns life’s meaning. Rialto lures innovation in all shapes and sizes ative, workable solutions to challenges facing cities.

ome people talk about innovation. In Rialto, it’s part of our DNA, as we continually bring innovative strategies, solutions and technology to our community and build on a quality of life that’s unmatched in our region. Over the years, we’ve come up with bold new funding opportunities to support essential services, creatively redeveloped the old Rialto Airport into a community entertainment and retail hub, and attracted innovative new companies and jobs to our city. Among the more exciting innovations coming our way is the Rialto Bioenergy Facility (RBF), under development in the Agua Mansa Industrial Corridor. Scheduled to open next year, the RBF will be the largest food waste digester facility in North America, each day converting 700 tons of food waste and 300 tones of biosolids into renewable natural gas, renewable electricity and organic fertilizer. Everything about this project screams innovation, from the technology to the environmental benefits to how it’s being paid for. Just last month, $117 million in tax-exempt bonds were issued by the California Pollution Control Financing Authority, which will cover most of the capital costs. The partnership itself, between the City of Rialto and Anaergia Inc., speaks to our community’s growing stature as a true innovation hub. Anaergia, the global technology leader in recovering value from waste, was attracted to Rialto’s aggressive approach to bringing cre-

We’re proud to partner with Anaergia and the other public and private entities who are making the RBF possible: Waste Management, Republic Services, Southern California Edison, Anaheim Public Utility, Southwest Gas Utility, the Sanitation Bureau of the City of Los Angeles and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County and Orange County. Funding partners include the California Energy Commission, the U.S. Department of Energy, CalRecycle, the State of California and private investment. You can bet that other companies and cities are taking note of this exciting project and the relationships that have been built. As a city, we understand the value of public-private partnerships – and not simply from a dollarsand-cents perspective. By aligning the right people and organizations, we’re able to bring cutting-edge thinking to everything we do – in this case, one of the largest organics recycling facilities in the world. Moreover, as Anaergia CEO Andrew Benedek points out, this facility will offer a “sustainable and replicable way to meet the state’s organics diversion and recycling need.” We’re not going to stop there, of course. As we’ve demonstrated with our successful Rialto Water Services project, we can and will use the financial benefits of these kinds of partnerships to reinvest in our community – upgrading our infrastructure, adding amenities and deepening the level of services we provide. I can see a day when the land that now houses City Hall becomes a public-private innovation hub – a place where great ideas, emerging technology and financial partners all come together. Imagine a place where our students and young people can seek and explore bold new opportunities. Where businesses can test new ideas. Where scholars and innovators can solve the world’s problems. There’s no better place than right here in Rialto.

Future of r ural living areas, high deser t depends on County Super visor s’ vote Thur sday

On February 28th, the San Bernardino County Supervisors are going to vote on whether to lay out the welcome mat for big solar and wind developers.

The issue is simple: Should the Board adopt proposed Policy 4.10 as part of the Renewable Energy and Conservation Element of the General Plan (The RECE)? Policy 4.10 would prohibit utilityscale energy projects in or next to our most sensitive high desert communities, and in Rural Living areas. The rest of the RECE, which the Board adopted in August 2017, would still permit these large projects in the rest of the unincorporated County, if they satisfy certain criteria. At stake is whether the rural character of our desert and mountain communities and wildlands

will be preserved or turned into industrial zones with vast fields of solar panels, wind farms, substations and transmission lines/towers. The county Planning Commission has already voted unanimously in favor of adopting Policy 4.10. The County Land Use Services’ staff report recommends adopting Policy 4.10.

At times the Supervisors have acted wisely. In February 2016 they passed a resolution telling the federal and state authorities that the County wanted large-scale renewables funneled to five large areas. – such as Trona and Hinckley -- that were already extremely degraded, and had large buffers from people who live in the area. The Supervisors said they had “strong concern” about putting industrial-scale projects anywhere else.

Some rural counties, including Kern and Inyo, have gone farther than that, pro-actively deciding with local communities and developers on where to build, encouraging development in those locations, and protecting more sensitive areas. San Bernardino could do that too. But powerful, well-funded forces have targeted our rural communities for development. Right now, NextEra and other worldwide energy developers – working closely with Southern California Edison -- have applied for more than 5,000 acres of new solar development in Lucerne Valley. At the February 28 hearing, we’ll hear from these people how Policy 4.10 will kill jobs, and how California needs all the renewable energy it can get. Make no mistake – California has decided to go one hundred percent renewable, a lot of which is going to come from new industrial-size projects. But they can go lots of places other than our county’s rural communities. And wherever we put them, the jobs pay just as well . California has fifty-eight counties. But one of them – ours – has too often been the sacrificial lamb in the eyes of federal and state agencies, developers, and others who have no stake in the welfare of the high desert. Let’s exercise our democratic rights on February 28th. Let’s attend the hearing (10 a.m. at 350 N. Arrowhead, San Bernardino) and voice our opinions. Our Supervisors have what it takes to stand up for us, but it sure helps when they see their constituents out in force. In 1979 Mr. Nadler began his career in Commerical and Industrial Real Estate, Development, Project Management, Brokerage and Property Management. Mr. Nadler is a lifetime Sierra Club, Audubon Member and a member of a number of Desert Preservation non- governmental organizations. Mr. Nadler is a Stakeholder in the County of San Bernardino RECE process. In 2018, Mr. Nadler personally donated 244 acres of high valued Wildlife Corridor lands to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.

About the dangers in Guatemala City. I was warned to be in the hotel before sunset. I had noticed that on every corner there was a policeman or military person with a machine-gun. Crime was the reason. Robbery, kidnapping and murder of foreigners was very prominent. Why? Just because. If I went out, I was to go out in the morning, but to be back by early evening. I obeyed without question. What I saw about the city was very attractive. One evening I had stayed out-close to sunset-and ran like a deer to get back in the Sheraton. Finally, the day arrived for my trip to TIKAL, the famous Mayan ruins. The small plane allowed me to have a clear view of the terrain; jungles, rivers and finally the ruins. Impressive temples that

were unmolested, surrounded by shrubbery and trees.

I spent a week there in a very primitive motel. Wild animals-except jaguars, were evident. Animal sounds were strong. The forest was alive with them. Everyday I tramped through the shrubs and twice I climbed to the top of the Mayan temple. I’ll never forget the lectures that were given by native Mayans that spoke English. I did not return to Guatemala City, Straight to the airport and back to Mexico City. The terrain of Guatemala is extremely diverse. Land near the Pacific Ocean is flat and very good farmland. It also has large cattle ranches. The northern part of Guatemala has thick tropical rain forests. It also has many animals in the jungles: howler monkeys, black guanas, Maya mice. In fact, they have more than 1200 kinds of animals. It also has thirty-seven (37) volcanoes. Many of them are still alive. The national bird of Guatemala is the beautiful QUETZAL. It has bright green and red feathers.

Guatemala has the largest percentage of Mayan than any of the Central America countries. About 50% of Guatemala’s citizens are the Ladinos. For 300 years, from 1521 to 1830, the land of Guatemala was ruled by New Spain, a colony of Spain. The Ladinos were descendants of Spaniards and Mayans. The population of Guatemala City has a population of over 2 million people; most of them are ladinos.

EDUCATION. It is common international knowledge that the current education system is substandard. Many classrooms do not have adequate teaching materials. Since about half of the population live below the poverty level, many/most of the children are forced to drop out of school to help their families. Or, they are unable to afford school. A major problem, like most indigenous families in Latin America “gender disparity.” Of the 2 million children in Guatemala that do not attend school, more than 60% of them are girls. They are considered inferior or are pregnant. Girls are the country’s most disadvantaged group. “Girls are expected to take care of siblings, leave school to help support the family or get married.

In rural areas, the problems are even worse.”

HEALTHCARE. Medical care is poor, limited to the wealthy. Indigent patients are ignored and most facilities are underfunded. The situation is even worse in rural areas. EMPLOYMENT. Jobs are at a minimum and most of the poverty is without employment. Mexico and Guatemala are in constant trouble. The border between them is constantly being challenged. In regards to the Caravan. It is no wonder that a high percentage of them are from Guatemala. The reasons are apparent. The Guatemala economy is much lower than Mexico’s; their education’s standards are considerably lower; and their health care is worse. It is obvious that the vast number of MS-13 members are from Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. Since Guatemala’s population is much more than the other three country’s put together, Guatemala is making most of the 7,000 people in the Caravan. Amen. Selah. So be it.

he Annual Humane Society Of San Bernardino Valley (HSSBV) Night at The Reign was held this past Saturday as the AHL LA Kings affiliate, the Ontario Reign, took on the Colorado Eagles. The event was a huge success and combine that with a Reign win, made for a great night. Right as fans entered Citizens Business Bank Arena they walked into a free Reign bandana and some HSSBV shirts and sweatshirts for sale that resembled the jerseys the players would wear for the game. They sold fast and were definitely something worth buying. There was also the traditional 50/50 raffle with the winner walking away with over $5,000!!!

There was also an exciting game to catch. The Reign hasn’t had the best season but the energy in the building was definitely there. There was obviously a rivalry tension in the air, especially after a fight broke out just 2 minutes into the game. It was 0-0 after the first period before the Reign put up a goal in the 2nd, and that was all they needed as they got an empty net goal in the 3rd winning 2-0 and pleasing the home crowd. However, there was one thing before the night wrapped up, the jersey auction. The players signed and handed over their jerseys to the fans with the winning bid. Winners also got to take a picture with that player, making for great fan-player interaction moments,

and a great way to cap off the night. Overall HSSBV raised $50,000 from the event, a huge success and boost for the Humane Society to continue helping animals in the local community. Next year’s event should be just as good as this one so make sure to come out to see the Reign play and come for a good cause at HSSBV Night at The Reign in 2020!

Tribal Secretary Ken Ramirez, who presented the gift on behalf of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, said this donation — the largest donation San Manuel has ever made — will forge an even stronger partnership with Loma Linda University Health to move the community forward in health and wellness. “San Manuel is grateful for the compassion shown to our elders by Loma Linda University Health many decades ago,” Ramirez said. “We are excited about the new opportunities and lifesaving care that the new Children’s Hospital will offer to our shared community and loved ones.”

In order to involve more people in the efforts to help the environment, it’s important to get younger generations involved in the effort. By fostering a concern for the environment and sustainable habits early, parents can raise children who will be more aware of environmental issues. Though schools will teach a bit about sustainability, the real work starts much earlier at home.

Younger generations are already becoming more conscious consumers, and instilling environmental values at a young age will help. Encouraging an interest in the outdoors will allow them to appreciate what they love about the environment. Children are our future, so it’s important to teach them about environmental issues so they can continue to help create change together.

In your child’s early years, try to focus on social-emotional learning in order to help them adopt a conscientious mindset. In the words of childcare experts at Kindercare, “The vast majority of brain development happens between the ages of zero to three — the perfect time for children to build the positive social-emotional skills they’ll need.” During these formative years, focus on teaching them foundational skills required for critical thinking, social interactions, and creativity. Later in life, these skills will enable them to analyze environmental issues, communicate those ideas to peers, and ultimately find solutions.

Establishing Good Habits It’s a lot easier to establish a habit in children than to teach them a new habit as they get older. Though some green living habits won’t come into play until a child

you teach them, these tools can help answer some of their questions in a way that your children can understand. Raising Environmentally Conscious Consumers Becoming environmentally conscious from a consumer standpoint was something learned for many adults. For older generations, paying attention to your own role as a consumer and how that affects the environment wasn’t something many people thought about. However, parents today can change that for their children. This means focusing on recycled items, buying sustainably sourced food, finding energy-efficient appliances, and using biodegradable cleaning products. Even a few sustainable choices make a huge impact, and children tend to emulate these purchasing decisions as adults. Being an environmentally conscious consumer is more than what you purchase; it’s who you purchase from. The evolution of sustainability from government initiatives to social change and corporate leaders making sustainable products has been happening for decades. However, many companies still operate without the environment in mind. Teaching your children about researching their

purchases and giving their money to companies that value environmental issues will help them to continue that practice as they get older. Encouraging an Interest in the Outdoors It’s easier for people to care about an issue if it hits close to home for them. An emotional investment in an issue is hard to break, which is why encouraging an interest in the outdoors can be helpful for your child’s future interest in environmental issues. Lead by example and provide them with activities. Take them on walks, hikes, and outings to the lake or ocean. Allow them to climb trees, look at bugs, and admire wildlife. Encourage their interest and questions and foster their appreciation. By providing them with more outdoor experiences, they will begin to associate their environment with interest and happiness. Not only will a love for the outdoors help them to have an emotional connection to environmental issues, it’ll also help them to be even more sustainable. They may be more interested in walking or biking instead of driving as they get older. They may adopt more outdoor hobbies like gardening. Not only that, but the outdoors encourage us to move more and stay healthier overall. Children Are the Future

Each generation needs to be better than the last. Children need to learn how to protect their environment, be kind to each other, and make decisions that benefit the world as a whole. Environmental education and conservancy has been a public virtue since the 19th century, but in recent decades it’s been a hotly debated topic tied to political interest and financial gain instead of science. Because of this, it’s even more important to teach children about the environment and sustainability at home. Without action, the environment will suffer — and each generation along with it. No one needs to be perfect in order to teach children about the environment. Each small, sustainable change makes an impact. It’s one fewer piece of plastic in a landfill, one fewer marine animal in peril, or one fewer dollar spent on oil. Teaching children that they can make a difference will help to raise a generation of adults who are more aware and environmentally conscious than the generation before them. It’s important to teach your children about the environment at an early age because these teachings will become their normal. The environmental habits they learn, the environmentally conscious consumer choices they see, and the time they spend learning to love and appreciate the outdoors will shape them into the future of environmental sustainability.

saac Linares, “Izzy”, 23, from San Bernardino, is the next big influencer and elite rapper coming fresh out of the Inland Empire. The 23-year-old, who is often giving back to the Inland community, is known to stop by Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, to give merchandise and greet fans who are receiving treatment. Not only has he broken stereotypes, he’s also broken digital media records with the Ten Toes

Down Challenge and recently unexpectedly went viral when his cover of Ariana Grande’s “Thank you, Next” video started trending worldwide. “My cover of Ariana Grande’s “Thank You, Next” video received over 1.3 million views on Twitter…alone. With the Ten Toes Down Challenge video I received well over 250,000 views across YouTube, Facebook and Twitter,” Izzy said. Not everyday someone from the Inland Empire makes waves as big as Izzy, mostly due to the Inland Empire not being as savvy as

some of the bigger cities located nearby. “Being a rapper in this area is tough. It is so populated and difficult to separate yourself to be seen as an elite rapper. The public doesn’t respect the talent here because we’re not a big city,” Izzy said. He describes his music as similar to that of the inspirational rapper J. Cole, who often raps about social injustices and positive movement. “I’m inspired by reality based music, opposed to a false reality. Everything I speak is true, it’s always something I’ve been through; all of my music is written by me. I’d say about 70 percent of my music’s beats are coherent with the song,” Izzy said. “My music touches on anxiety, depression and love. My music is nothing like the rap music that plays on the radio where they rap about money, jewelry and women; that music is only creating a bad influence on the youth,” Izzy said. One special attribute to Izzy’s brand is his Million$Dreams movement and motto; which actually has nothing to do money. “Spreading the Million$Dreams movement has been amazing. Having someone from a different state or country wearing the tshirts, hats, sweaters, stickers and logo that I designed is crazy,” Izzy said. “There’s people that I’ve never even met, from all over the country and even the world saying they love the movement and clothing, it means so much to me.” “The Million$Dreams move-

ment has nothing to do with money. It’s about living your life the way you want; while pursuing what you want to pursue and doing what makes you happy,” Izzy said. Making music is what makes Izzy happy and he shared how it was difficult to get his family’s support earlier on in his career. “This is my fourth year making music. It took my family a while to realize and see for themselves what I was doing. With any new job venture, it’s going to take a while to get the ball rolling, it was tough for them to support me at first,” Izzy said. “They thought my music was good, but now with people asking to take pictures and sign autographs when I go out, my family is starting to realize the depths of my career and see how far I’ve come,” continued Izzy. He says the positive social media and face-to-face feedback he gets everyday motivates him to continue progressing as a rapper and influencer. When fans tell him how his music has helped them through a difficult time, Izzy says that alone makes all the hate and sacrifice worth it. “My career goal is to have at least two or three songs at a million hits in the next five years. I want to have at least 100 songs out, I have 40 songs out now. I want my fan base to be doubled. And most of all, I hope I’m making a livable income off of my music and clothing line and not having to work my day job anymore,” continued Izzy.

He shared that he would not be where he is today without all the love and support from the fans, especially those in the Inland Empire. “Thank you to my fans and supporters for watching every music video, listening to every single song, and for staying in tune with all my social media updates. Always remember, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something because no one in your area or family has accomplished it. I believe in you,” Izzy said.
