oyote Helping Hands, a group of five Social Work students - David Sturges, Krystal Guerrero, Cherish Watson, Christina Landeros, and Mayra Martinez from California State University, San Bernardino, initiated an advocacy project in the city of Colton. After surveying members in the community, the students found that maintaining the cleanliness of local parks was especially important to residents. In order to assist the community with their concerns of graffiti and trash found in the parks, they created a “Love Your Community Clean-Up Day”. The event took place on February 16, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Veterans Park. The event was a success with approximately 25-30 people from the community showing up to lend a hand to help paint over graffiti and pick up trash.

Families converged at Joe Baca Middle School Saturday for the literacy where activities included meeting with artists and authors, puppet-making and writing workshops, a Teen Poetry Slam, book giveaways and selfies with Superheroes, to name just a few.

It was a day of great magnitude as I was able to witness first hand the interaction with young students and their connection with literature. As I walked through the event seeing all of the festivites a sense of nostalgia brought me back to my childhood and how I too took great joy in these book fairs. Most importantly though is the support and connection the kids make with their families through this event. Literacy, cont. on next pg.

Lar r y Rivas to discuss proposed soccer complex during Colton Area Museum presentation

n Saturday, March 9, at 2:30 p.m., in the downstairs research center, the Colton Area Museum’s (CAM) guest speaker program will feature Mr. Larry Rivas, long time Colton resident, Business owner, and Parks and Recreation Commissioner. Born in Colton, Mr. Rivas, grew up attending Colton Schools and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1979. After attending Riverside Community College, Mr. Rivas attended University of California – Riverside, and graduated with a major in plant engineering. Several of his family members remained in the Colton area, and two of them, his Literacy Fuentes explained how critical it is for the parents to be involved in their child’s development from the start. That by reading, books can be used as a tool to help increase the development of the child that will lead to success later

Mr. Rivas will offer a look at the preliminary plans and current efforts by our city to develop a Colton Community Soccer Sports Complex, currently planned for the open area just south of Congress Street. “Many challenges have presented themselves” says Mr. Rivas, “but we're confident we can address these issues, and move forward to getting this project built.” Some of the challenges that Mr. Rivas will talk about are acquiring the land, endangered species, water, contamination mitigation, and completing the required enviin life. With that being said, my day was filled with fun and excitement. It was a pleasure to talk and be surrounded by awesome people that ultimately care about their community. R attlesnake avoidance training registration open

he Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley will be hosting Rattlesnake Avoidance Training on Friday, April 19th at their facility starting at 9:00 a.m. Training is provided by High on Kennels from Santa Ysabel, CA. Appointment registration for the training is open now and interested participants can pre-register and save $5 off of the $75 fee. In recent years “rattlesnake season” has been starting earlier than usual. In addition to training, a rattlesnake vaccination is recommended and only costs $26 at the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley. It is recommended that all dogs be trained to avoid rattlesnakes. The dangers of rattlesnakes not only exist on hikes in the country or on trails, but in our backyards

as well. Annual training is recommended as some dogs seem to forget over a period of time. High on kennels has found the best way to teach a dog to avoid rattlesnakes is to use live rattlesnake specimens that have been neutralized so they cannot bite. Rattlesnakes have a distinctive odor that a dog can discern from other snakes. The snakes are placed in a field setting and the dogs are fitted with training collars. Dogs are then led through the field and allowed to encounter the rattlesnakes at which point the dog is stimulated using the electronic collar. Guest Op-Ed Allen Hernandez CCAEJ Executive Dir. The Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice believes the Green New Deal (Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez) could have a positive effect on our region through its Just Transition, clean energy, and zero emission goals. The Green New Deal proposes that we move towards zero emissions in our transportation sector. A strong first step is to address heavy duty freight pollution in black and brown communities like the Westside of San Bernardino and Mira Loma. The World Health Organization reports that the transportation sector is the fastest growing contributor to climate change. This is a fact we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t keep ignoring. Locally, CCAEJ and partnering organizations are pressuring the South Coast Air Quality Management District to begin looking at real ways to curb diesel emissions. The only answer to cleaning up our air is zero-emissions technology. To do this, the warehouse and logistics industry must invest in electric infrastructure. The Green New Deal proposes that our energy supply be 100 percent clean energy. In order to achieve this goal, all remaining gasfired power plants must be retired. While the retirement of the Etiwanda gas-fired power plant last year marked a milestone towards this goal, there is a dire need to retire several plants in Colton and Riverside. Our public officials have an obligation to ensure that dirty sources of energy are replaced with solely renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and battery storage. Local school districts have already procured their power from solar and storage. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tragic and irresponsible that our cities and counties have not

The Green New Deal talks about a Just Transition, which is achieved when we shift from an exploitative economy built off of the lives of low-income communities of color to a 100 percent renewable energy and zero emissions economy that prioritizes people over profit. In the Inland Empire, warehouse workers are hired through temporary staffing agencies and put through inhumane working conditions. Workers are underpaid, given irregular hours, and lack health benefits. The UC Riverside Center for Social Innovation published a study in 2018 that found that less than half of the jobs in our region pay a living wage. A Just Transition and a call for a green economy demands that the logistics industry treat workers with respect and allow them to organize and unionize without retaliation. Where Ocasio-Cortezâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Green New Deal misses the mark is in regards to net-zero and firm accountability. Net-zero does not directly cut the emission source, but instead provides an out for polluters to continue contaminating our air, land, and soil with offsets. When we rely on netzero and cap and trade, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re following the same paradigm that continues to kill our communities. The Green New Deal also fails to explicitly name the fossil fuel industry as the culprit. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s imperative that we hold these corporations--Western States Petroleum Association, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Shell--accountable for todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s climate change crisis. The lives of our working class, communities of color depend on it. Environmental justice communities in the Inland Empire continue to pay the repercussions of corporate pollution with their lives. The Green New Deal can hold polluters accountable, demand and implement zero-emissions infrastructure, and give frontline communities power and control over the green new economy. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only one option when it comes to preserving the quality of life for residents, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pushing for a future that is free of fossil fuels.

Our national debt just exceeded 22 trillion dollars. To pay this debt today each citizen owes $67,033. Since children pay no taxes, nor do about 45% of our adult population, each taxpayer actually owes $179,908. Our largest creditors in order are: Medicare/Medicaid $1,091,280,000,000, Social Security $1,005,651,000,000, Defense/War 676,814,000,000, Income Security (welfare) $293,531,000,000, Net Interest on Debt $350,206,000,000, and Federal Pensions $272,980,000,000 (USDebtClock.org). Even with the present robust Trump economy (the best in several decades) this cannot continue to escalate. We are on a collision course with Armageddon which, at this late date, may not be avoidable. Any hope depends on three things (1) our ability to make significant cuts in the top six expenditures noted above, (2) our not electing a big spending congress or president in the next decade, (3) our not entering into any new big funding events such as war, infrastructure overhaul, or open borders allowing new groups to â&#x20AC;&#x153;eat out our substanceâ&#x20AC;? without having already paid their way. Of this enslaving debt, four trillion came from eight years of George W. Bush and ten trillion from eight years of Barack Obamaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the two biggest spending presidents in U.S. History. Obama alone accumulated more debt than all previous presidents put together. Donald Trump is responsible for over two trillion dollars in two years.

So what is a trillion dollars? To begin with a trillion is the number one followed by twelve zeros. A trillion dollars is a thousand billion and a billion is a thousand million. This still means very little to students who count their money

in fives, tens and twenties. One mathematician gave us a more practical way to evaluate our outstanding debt. One trillion, one-dollar bills stacked atop each other (not end to end but flat) would reach nearly 68,000 miles into spaceâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a third of the way to the moon (See CNN News Cast, Feb. 4, 2009). If so, the debt incurred under President Obama alone, $10 trillion, would have reached the moon and back and to the moon again. Moreover, if you like traveling atop this stack of ones, our total $22 trillion in debt would take you to the moon and back three times and to the moon a fourth time and a third of the way home again.

I ask students, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Who gets to go without so that this debt can be paid?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Go without!!!?â&#x20AC;? That is a concept foreign to this generation!! They do not know, and neither do their parents and grandparents who laid it on their backs. When they are told that their share of the debt is $67,034 and up to $179,908, depending on how many of their fellow non taxpayers they can get to pay their fair share (see USDebtClock.org), due immediately, they are angry. Someone should have told them that government handouts are not free. The 13th Amendment ending slavery has been rescinded, they are Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new slaves. Bondage was given them before their birth, or while still in the womb, or before they were old enough to know what it meant to be sold into slavery. The past generation wanted nice costly programs for free and were willing to sell their children in order to have them. The latest new theory to avoid fiscal responsibility and continue unlimited spending, used by Bush in late 2009 and Obama thereafter,

is referred to as Quantitative Easing. Crudely it means printing more money out of thin air to cover our debt, but it is far more sophisticated than that. For Bush the money supply was greatly expanded by having the Federal Reserve purchase $600 billion in mortgage-backed securities (Harding, Robin. 3 November 2010, Quantitative Easing Explained. Financial Times). Obama purchased $600 billion of Treasury securities over a six month period of time beginning in November 2010 in what has been called Quantitative Easing or QE2 to distinguish it from QE1, the Bush expansion of the money supply (Cesky, Annalyn,3 Nov.2010, â&#x20AC;&#x153;QE2: Fed Pulls the Triggerâ&#x20AC;? CNNmoney.com. Retrieved 10 Aug. 2011).

The biggest problem with expanding the money supply is that it reduces the value of the money that you have in your pocket. Prices go up. My Camaro, purchased in 1968, cost $2,700, purchased today at least ten times as much. In this instance money has lost 90% of its value since 1968. Those on fixed incomes are robbed as surely as if a thief had lifted their wallet or purse. They cannot return to their employer for a raise to compensate for the loss caused by their own government. I have one of three objectives in my weekly articles. The first is to INFORM the readers about something that is not commonly known. Like the Laetare Medal. It was first awarded in 1883 by Notre Dame University. It is located in Indiana and is a Catholic school. It is noted for its academic honors and its football and basketball teams. It is awarded to “the Catholic whose genius has enhanced the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the Church and enriched the heritage of humanity.” The first winner was John Gilmary Shea, a Catholic historian. Others to receive the award are: Dorothy Day, Alfred Smith, Msgr. George Higgins, Martin

My second objective is to INSPIRE the readers. The first item is a phrase in the Bible, in fact two phrases. The first is in the Book of Psalms, Chapter 90, verse 10. “Our years are seventy.” I can’t accept that since I’m already 91 years old. Therefore, to inspire both of us, I suggest the Biblical reference in Genesis. Chapter six verse 3. It says, “Man’s allotted years are one hundred and twenty (120).” Another source to inspire both of us is in the beginning of the Bill of Rights. “We the people of the United States in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” The third objective that I have in writing articles, is to AGITATE. Agitation can be for good or ill. These two suggestions are both.

The first one is about President Trump. If what I heard is true, it agitates me. If it is an accusation, and not true, it agitated me even more. And probably you. What is said about him is that he is a racist. I quote what is said about him—what he said. “Black people will not vote for me, because they are not smart enough.” Second, “Have you ever heard of a black person who was the head of a great country. And this includes former President Obama?” Third, while the teller and the President were riding together in a bad section of Chicago President Trump supposedly said, “Only a black person would live in a place like this.” Again, either way, if true, I’m agitated with disgust. Another source of agitation for me is religious in nature. I owe Rabbi Jonathan Cohn’s book, The Book of Mysteries, for it. My agitation is based on the fact that it is difficult to understand. It is a dialogue between a teacher and a student. The student begins with a question. “God is one. And God is three. Mathematically speaking,” said the student, “I don’t see how it can work. One can never equal three

and three can never equal one.” At that, it was I who picked up a stick and began writing numbers in the sand. “One plus one plus one equals three, not one.” “And if it was one divided by three?” asked the teacher. Again I wrote it out on the sand. “One divided by three equals one-third, not one.” “You’re right,” said the teacher. “It doesn’t work. How could it?” “I guess it can’t. So I should forget about trying to use equations.” I lifted the stick to erase the numbers when he grabbed my hand to stop me. “I didn’t say that. You just used the wrong equation. God is infinite. You can’t use that which is finite to comprehend the infinite.” The teacher than took the stick and pointed it to the first equation. Next to every number he inscribed a symbol. . . the symbol of infinity. “Now let’s try it again. One infinity plus one infinity plus one infinity equals three infinities. How big is three infinites?” “It’s infinite. It’s infinity.” “Thus three infinities equal one infinity.” He replied. “Three equals one.” At that he pointed the stick to the second equation and did likewise, inserting again the symbol of infinity.

“One infinity divided by three equals one-third of infinity. And what is one-third of infinity? Onethird of infinity is . . . infinity. When you speak of God, you’re speaking of the infinite. And one infinity and three infinities are equal. One-third of infinity and one infinity are likewise equal. So in the realm of God, the realm of the infinite, one does equal three and three does equal one. You can never fit the infinite inside the finite, and you can never fit God inside of your understanding. If you could, then He wouldn’t be God. Then your understanding would be God. But God, by definition, must be greater than your understanding. And this will set you free. You see, you don’t have to figure out God. he life and work of the late Dr. Albert Karnig, president emeritus of California State University, San Bernardino, have left an indelible mark on the city of San Bernardino and the surrounding region. On Tuesday, February 26th, his widow, Marilyn Karnig, was the honored guest at The Big Reveal event held in the Norton Elementary School library by the Making Hope Happen Foundation. What was The Big Reveal? The InfantToddler Success program now bears the name of its founder and visionary and will from now on be: Dr. Albert Karnig Infant-Toddler Success program or KITS for

short; in recognition of the visionary university president-emeritus who understood that the groundwork for success in college and career is laid in infancy. Dr. Albert Karnig was president of CSU San Bernardino from 1997-2012. During his tenure, he fostered close relationships with area school district leaders, and others focused on improving educational outcomes in the region, getting students ready for college and careers. Dr. Karnig was the child of immigrants, only learning English when he entered kindergarten in New York. He was committed to making a university education at-

In 2015, Dr. Karnig’s search for answers and the key to unlock children’s potential led him to Dr. Laura Kamptner, CSUSB Child Development faculty and nationally-recognized expert on the subject of Parenting. What he learned is that 80-85% of brain development happens in the first 36 months of life and what a child experiences in that window of time determines how they learn, regulate their emotions, and respond to the world around them. With that knowledge in hand, a team was gathered, and the InfantToddler Success Program was launched; providing researchbased, parenting education to families with children ages 0-3 in partnership with The Community Foundation, which served as the organization’s fiscal agent from March 2016 - September 2018, Making Hope Happen Foundation with which it merged in October 2018, CSUSB’s Institute for Child Development and Family Relations, which serves the program delivery partner, the San Bernardino City Unified School District, Dignity Health, SACH Health Systems, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Hope Through Housing, Feldheym Library, and many others. Since its first class held in May of 2016, the program has served nearly 700 adults and teens, providing parenting education, a light meal, free enriched childcare, free children’s books to take home and

keep at every session, and ongoing support by way of phone calls, emails, and follow-up classes.

During the event Marilyn Karnig named the first recipient of the Dr. Albert Karnig Infant-Toddler Success Award for excellence in child development education and advocacy: Dr. Laura Kamptner, without whom the program would not have been possible and whose life’s work have educated countless students and families about the importance of the early years. Infant-Toddler Success is a project of Making Hope Happen Foundation in partnership with

California State University San Bernardino’s Institute for Child Development and Family Relations. The mission of Infant-Toddler Success is to support parents and caregivers of children ages 036 months in helping their children to be ready for school and life. San Ber nardino Symphony welcomes Melissa Manchester, Ber nadene Blaha, Shar on Laver y to March concer t Blaha first came to international attention as a prizewinner in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition; the Young Keyboard Artists International Piano Competition, Grand Rapids, Michigan; the Masterplayers International Competition, Lugano, Switzerland; and the 11th Annual International Piano Competition in New York City. This latter award resulted in two highly acclaimed recital appearances at Carnegie Recital Hall and the Lincoln Center Library. Soon afterward, she was featured in the opening orchestra concert and a solo recital at the XXIX International Chopin Festival in Marianske Lazne, Czechoslovakia, followed by performances at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and Disney Hall in Los Angeles. Blaha is a founding member of the piano trio Latitude 41, and her discography also includes recordings for the CBC, Centaur, and Analekta labels.

he San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will welcome three outstanding female musicians to the fifth installment of their widely-praised 2018-19 concert season.

“As March is Women’s History Month, this seemed a timely and relevant application of our artistic mission to the contribution of women in fine arts,” shared Symphony Board President Dean McVay. The conductor for this concert is Maestra Sharon Lavery, the ninth talented contender in the Symphony’s two year-long music director search. Since 2007, Lavery has been music director of the Downey Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble hailed as one of the best metropolitan orchestras in Southern California. She has appeared as guest conductor with the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra, the La Jolla Symphony, the La Brea Sinfonietta of Los Angeles, and the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition Orchestra in Palm Springs. Since 2004, she has held the post of cover conductor for the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, and has also served as cover conductor for the San Diego Symphony. She has been the assistant conductor of the Pasadena Symphony, the associate conductor of the Herbert Zipper Orchestra of Los Angeles, and has also served as music director of the MUSE International Music Day Festival in Chiba, Japan. In conjunction with her professional duties, Ms. Lavery serves as resident conductor of the University of Southern California

Thornton Symphony, Chamber Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. She has led the Thornton ensembles in concert on countless occasions, and served as music director of the Thornton Concert Orchestra for seven years. In addition to these duties, Lavery teaches instrumental conducting at USC. Lavery is also known as an advocate for music education. She has conducted the International Honors Performance Series Orchestra and Band at Carnegie Hall, the Missouri All-State Orchestra, the California All-State High School Concert Band, and the Texas 4A All-State Band.

Hailing from Ossining, New York, Lavery received her bachelor of music education degree from Michigan State University and master of music in clarinet performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. She also earned a master of music in orchestral conducting from USC Thornton, receiving the Leonard Bernstein Memorial Scholarship for two consecutive years. The first half of the concert will include two pieces by George Gershwin, “Selections from Porgy and Bess” and “Rhapsody in Blue,” which will feature acclaimed pianist Bernadene Blaha. Blaha’s command of the piano, whether featured as recitalist, concerto soloist or chamber musician, has been heralded in performances throughout North America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Mexico. Piano and Keyboard magazine reviewed her as “a pianist of integrity, with lovely sonorities and total clarity of line.”

The second half of the concert will feature Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter and actress Melissa Manchester performing her tribute to “The Fellas.” This creative concept is Manchester’s inventive reimagining of beloved standards by artists such as Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett and Dean Martin. Manchester comes by her own love of the arts quite naturally. She was born in New York where her father was a bassoonist for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and her mother was one of the first women to design and found her own clothing firm, Ruth Manchester Ltd. They introduced her to all the classics, and by the age of 15, Manchester was already a published poet. After graduating from the High School of the Performing Arts, she entered New York University and enrolled in a songwriting class taught by Paul Simon, later landing a staff writing job at Chappell Music and performing as a solo singer/pianist in the clubs of Greenwich Village, where she met Bette Midler and Barry Manilow. As a back-up singer for Midler, Manchester fulfilled her childhood fantasy of playing Carnegie Hall. Six months later, she had a recording contract, and went on to headline at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall, and performed for sold-out audiences across the country. Manchester's music established her as a compelling singer/songwriter, as did a string of hits including "Midnight Blue." Manchester and Kenny Loggins co-wrote the radio classic "Whenever I Call You Friend", and her songs have been recorded by the likes of Barbra Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Alison Krauss, Roberta Flack, Johnny Mathis, Kathy Mattea, Peabo Bryson and Cleo Laine. he 10th annual Auto Club Speedway's STEM Day is expected to draw some 500 eighth-grade students from 12 middle schools in San Bernardino County on March 15 as part of the Auto Club 400 Weekend. The students will have an opportunity to do hands-on engineering and math exercises with student volunteers from local colleges and universities, as well as interact with exhibitors.
