Newspaper salesman Kenny, a local fixture in Colton, living life on his own terms By Maryjoy Duncan

f you’re a resident of Colton you are likely to be familiar with the man who stands at the corner of Rancho Ave. and Valley Boulevard six mornings a week for the last 16 years selling The Sun newspaper. Kenny Robbins, born in the small town of Ypsilanti, Michigan east of Ann Arbor, made his way to California in 1977 after he joined the Air Force and was stationed at the now defunct George Air Force Base in Victorville, where he spent two-and-a-half years before being honorably discharged. A specialist in wastewater treatment, Kenny invested ten years in the industry before he decided he was not one to play office politics and sought reprieve with the Salvation Army in San Bernardino, working odd jobs here and there.

“I’m an independent, a nonconformist,” Kenny, who enjoys listening to old Rhythm and

Blues, revealed. He began selling The Sun newspaper in San Bernardino in the late 90’s before he was relocated to Colton in 2003. He has worked at the same location across Colton High School ever since. He endured a couple stints of homelessness while in San Bernardino, and has become homeless once again when his landlord/roommate sold the residence in December. Kenny currently stays at Elizabeth Davis Park. “I’m an optimist - looking at the dark side is an easy way out,” Kenny, who has witnessed the dark side of human nature on the streets, said. “Being on the street is different from being a part of the street.” He admitted that the streets of Colton are benign compared to those in San Bernardino. “It’s best to just walk away,” he said when being confronted with aggression. What he likes most about sellKenny, cont. on next pg.

Congratulations to the 15 local educators who were recognized during the June 4 council meeting, and to Dr. G who retired from a 41-year career as a music and social studies teacher! By Dr. G (Dr. Luis Gonzalez)

A

t the June 4 council meeting, the Colton City Council recognized teachers who live in the City of Colton in celebration of National Teachers Month. Councilman Dr.

G (Dr. Luis S. Gonzalez) presented to the entire City Council 15 local educators at the ceremonial event. The event was planned to coincide with National Teachers Month at the end of the academic school year.

Teachers, families, and special guests were all in attendance while Dr. G recognized the teachers and presented the official “Teacher Appreciation Day” Proclamation. He also explained that this was the fourth time the teachers were being formally rec-

ognized both as a group and individually in the City of Colton, and was very pleased the City Council continued the tradition. The first Colton Teacher Appreciation Day was held in 2016. Teachers, cont. on next pg.

Organization helps victims of domestic, sexual, human traf ficking abuse transfor m homes By Marina Rojas

J

une is a month known for celebrations - weddings, Father's Day, Flag Day, and lots of picnics and beach trips thanks to weather that's usually quite amicable. This June, a family in Rialto will be celebrating a new beginning of sorts, thanks to an organization called W.E.L.L. (Women Empowered through Labors of Love). W.E.LL. is the brainchild of Denese Lopez, founded in January of 2018 in Whittier, California. It's an organization that is committed to empowering women and children survivors of domestic, sexual and human trafficking abuse. The focus of her group is spotlighted on the survivors' living space. The idea for this emphasis came to Lopez in her time as a volunteer at a domestic violence emergency shelter for women and children. Having fled from their abuser, they would come to the shelter with only the clothes on their backs and sometimes very few other things. Around the same time, Lopez had experienced divorce, and found herself a single mother with priorities of putting food on the table, clothes on everyone's back and a roof over the family's head. Teachers “The Colton Teacher Appreciation Day is an important occasion for all of us,” Dr. G mentioned during the presentation. “Teachers make a positive contribution to help our children succeed. They learn the Pledge of Allegiance, the U.S. Constitution, how to be responsible American citizens, and how to vote.” Plans are being made to continue the search for more teachers who live in Colton so that they may be recognized during the month of May, which is the official National Teachers month, as established by the U.S. Congress and the National Educators Association in 1985. The ceremony also included proclamations from the offices of

Denese Lopez of W.E.L.L. "We are capable of achieving anything in life we believe. Sometimes we just need someone to give us a little push." Just like the people she was rendering aid to in the shelter, anything outside of needs for survival were not high on the “get list”. As she looked around her house, she longed for a home pleasantly decorated that would be warm and inviting to others as well as her family, but that was a luxury far beyond her reach. As the survivors she came to know and befriend would leave the shelter for their new lives, she would think about how they deserved to go home to a place that Pete Aguilar, U.S. Congress Member District 31; Connie Leyva, California State Senator, 20th District; Eloise Gomez Reyes, California State Assembly Member, 47th District; and Josie Gonzales and Dawn Rowe, County Supervisors, Fifth District and Third District, respectively. Colton Joint Unified School Board of Trustees, Israel Fuentes, Bertha Arreguin, and President Joanne Thoring-Ojeda, were also in attendance to lend their support to the local teachers, many who work in the district. The final recognition was presented to Dr. G (Dr. Luis S Gonzalez, PhD), who after 41 years teaching in the public schools, retired from a long-standing career in music and most recently, social studies.

would be fitting of their new beginning. Lopez felt they should be able to start over with a beautiful place to call home, to be a haven of peace and safety for the family and to offer a welcoming place for their friends and family to visit. So many times, Lopez explained, abused women are cut off from others, and their homes are a source of embarrassment or shame to them. One positive way to enforce their new life changes is to see that their living spaces are beautiful and open and inviting, so they can live each day in a tranquil respite while feeling pride when they want to welcome others into their home. The first goal of the group was to have groups of women volunteers go into a home and transform it. Painting, repair, new carpets, rugs, new furnishings and wall hangings are all just a part of W.E.L.L.'s transformation plan. Beds, mattresses, kitchen tables, all help complete the total home makeover for the newly transitioned families. The organization accepts and is always in need of volunteers in all areas. Monetary donations, companies who can sponsor a home renovation are always greatly appreciated, and furniture stores The names of the Colton City Teachers who were in attendance (photo) at the June 4 Council meeting are: Jennie Blinkinsop, Andrea Bragg, Karen Coleman, Dr.G (Dr. Luis S Gonzalez), Kimberly Guadagnoli, Geri Marquez, Cheryl Meyer, Annamaria Reyes, Ashton Reynosa, and Raquel Rios. Those also pictured are Esmeralda Vasquez, representative from State Assembly Member’s office; Edgar Castelan, representative from State Senator’s office; Andrea Harlin, Representative from U.S. Congress Member’s office; Kianna Maldonado and Heather Perry, Representatives from SB County Supervisor’s office, and Jack Woods, Colton Council Member, District 5.

Kenny is hopeful that he will be receiving his grandfather’s inheritance soon as it gets resolved in court in Tennessee. A wanderlust at heart, Kenny spends his time planning his future with what he calls his “retirement,” envisioning himself setting up homes on the west and east coasts while crisscrossing the nation in his RV. When that time comes the Colton community will undoubtedly miss the gentle soul who waves at them every morning with an infectious smile they have come to know and adore.

Either fight back or get out Be encouraged United States as a nation we’re doing well. U.S. grew at 3.4% rate economically in 1st quarter. It’s the quickest growth in 4 yrs. Tennessee leads nation in small business employment growth. Remember Tennessee along with Georgia are the states that brought laws that stop abortion. Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. In light of those encouraging facts I want to discuss issues here in California. They are not so great. As follows: 1) Inner cities of L.A., San Diego, San Francisco and yes San Bernardino are cesspools of human feces, urine and used needles by the drug addicted homeless populations sleeping all over our sidewalks and parks. There is as I said before an epidemic of typhoid fever in inner city L.A. and it’s now spreading to our first responders. The CDC and leaders here say it will explode this summer under the squelching heat waves predicted this season. As spoken in LORDS word Proverbs 23: 29) Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? 30) Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. 32) In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. This is state of California and way our leaders lead us as a state down path of acts and behavior not becoming of GODS plan for HIS What can we as father's do with our remaining years?

E-mail us your opinions, photos, announcements to editor@iecn.com for consideration. Letters limited to 500 words

We can't turn back the clock. Any and all missed opportunities cannot be reclaimed. Some father's live with regrets while others know they did the best they could. I don't know of too many dads who deeply feel like they have been perfect. In our younger adult and middle age years we had a lot on our plates. We were trying to make it in our jobs and keep food in the house and a roof over our heads. Most of the time we were juggling long hours. Most of us tried to do the best we could. The best you can do with your remaining years is to love your children and grandchildren and others. Call them on the telephone and visit them every chance you have. Engage in personal conversations. Talk to them about their lives and what they are doing. Give advice but don't overdo it. Try to remember how well you listened to advice when you were

beautiful children. WE NEED TO WAKE UP AS PEOPLE AND FIGHT FOR OUR CHILDREN TO NOT FALL INTO THIS TRAP OF DESTRUCTION! 2) Our liberal leaders here want to expand Medicaid to illegals age 19 to 25 or older. At the cost of 3 billion a yr to start. You guessed it they’ll tax you more, those working in middle class still living here. Soon we’ll be another Venezuela, diving into dumpsters for food, 9/10 in poverty. As spoken in Proverbs 24: 33) A little sleep a little slumber, a little folding of hands to rest—34) and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed bandit. What liberal leaders here don’t realize is they will eventually run out of our tax payer money because citizens here are moving out by the thousands to Texas, Arizona and Nevada other low tax states with common sense leaders who don’t cater to criminals and illegals in their states. The handwriting is on the wall either fight back or get out. It’s only going to get worse for California. Fight for your children because they’re the ones who will suffer the most when corruption takes even stronger root in our state. As is spoken in Proverbs 25:5 ( NIV) remove wicked officials from the king’s presence, and his throne will be established through righteousness.

T hi s Fat her ’s Da y 30 years old.

Help your family as you can but if you do it all the time you will cripple them. What are your children going to do when you are gone? They have to make it financially and emotionally. Birds must learn to fly on their own and so do our children. Most anyone can go through a lot of money in a year or two if they don't know how to budget and live thrifty. Find opportunities to engage with family as you can. Sometimes a day trip in a car with the radio off provides a lot of casual opportunities to talk about old times and new times. Casually let your children in on things you have learned in your life. They might remember them later down the road. Ask them to tell you what they have learned and you will probably discover your child is going through some of the same stuff you did at his or her age. As a father keep it balanced. How many years do you have left? I see old dads who spend

Oh another fact about previous two states I spoke of Tennessee and Georgia they are leading in job growth and small business. Ironic they’re being BLESSED by our LORD because they’re aligned with HIS will, not the worlds of not killing unborn. Read Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV)...to see our LORDS heart for life of HIS creations and then think about what you will do here in your state to stop the lawless act of abortion and assisted suicide another topic for future discussion. Those who call yourselves lovers of cross followers of light fast and pray with me on what your part is in all this. Then pray for our leaders here to be brought back to their training as children as in Proverbs 22:6 ( NIV) Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they grow old they will not turn from it. They will be brought to knees in sight of our LORD and SAVIOR and ask for forgiveness for their lawless acts. Most people don’t understand me say I am wasting my time but I know what is upsetting to our LORD is upsetting to me. It should be to you too if you are a believer. Contact Representatives by phone, e-mail and tell them your concerns that’s what I do. As is spoken in Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Susie Rancho Cucamonga

every day with their children and grandchildren and maybe this is what you want. Personally, I don't think it's healthy for anybody. Husbands and wives need to stay emotionally connected and this means taking time to go out of town by themselves. Whether it's vacation, hobbies or simply maintaining an independent life. I've seen too many dads move in with a child and then soon the child was controlling dad's checkbook and telling dad how to spend his money. The next move of course is "finding a home for dad," which means assisted living or a nursing home. Keep your independence. Keep driving. Do daily activities to keep strong. Eat healthy as possible. See good doctors and stay away from the bad ones. Finally, be a good, happy, loving and independent father. That is probably the best gift you can give your children this father's day. Words to Think About: Ir ritated by racism, hypocrisy dictable as the weather. That’s what irritates me. Drivers today often cut you off. They swerve this way and that. They don’t give turn signals. On and on. But most of all, in rainy darkness-early morning and darkness, they drive with NO lights on. This is very common in Hispanic countries - south of our borders.

T

G. W. Abersold, Ph.D.

here are a number of events in my life that irritate me. I’ve accumulated them through the years. Since I’m 91 years old, I’ve obviously had time to think about a few of them. For example. I learned to drive in an old Model T. Most of you have never seen one, let alone driven one. One unique condition to driving a Model T, was cranking from the front to get it started. You had to be careful. Sometimes it didn’t work. Also, the doggone car could suddenly jerk forward. Modern cars are totally different. They are usually predictable. But drivers are as different and as pre-

That makes me think that when I see a car in the morning with no lights on, I wonder about the driver. I often count such cars in the early morning from our home to McDonald’s restaurant on Baseline. It’s almost 4 miles from our home. I’ve counted 50 cars with no lights on in the time we take to get there. The least was 15. Even in severe rain or severe fog or severe traffic. There should be a law. I heard a candidate for President really criticizing Trump for being

But my irritation is different. And yet it is similar. Every time he places the Medal of Honor around the neck of a genuine hero, I’m really torked off. I don’t call him a traitor, but I do say he is a hypocrite. I have been irritated for many years about racism - a racist. As a young person I couldn’t understand why certain races were looked down upon. Particularly Italians, Blacks or anyone that couldn’t speak English. My friends were mostly Italians. We played together, fought each other. Renzi, Tedeschi, Frizzi sound normal to me. We lived next door to several Italian families. They taught me how to eat spaghetti and drink wine. When Mrs. Renzi wacked Frankie, she wacked me also. At

age 12, I also worked beside Blacks. So did my Dad. The way they were treated irritated me then and still does. A few years later I was a pastor of a church in Florida. It was the time when Martin Luther King was in his heyday. Segregated schools, segregated churches, segregated restaurants. The Board of the church I served built a large school for white kids only. They also posted a rule that Blacks could not even enter the church to attend funerals. Since Puerto Ricans were the dominant Hispanics, they were also segregated. Currently my close friends are Blacks, Hispanics and Whites, as far as I know. My current irritation concerns Muslims. There are about 8 million in the U.S.A. today. I have about 30 very good friends among them. I exercise with them, I eat with them and I’m irritated about how they are treated. In my recent serious illness, I had two Muslim doctors. They were great. Their treatment by our President irritates

me. My last irritant for this article is back to me. I profess to be an unalterably patriot. In fact, I cannot remember in my 91 years when I was NOT patriotic. I salute the Flag, I say the Pledge of Allegiance, I sing the StarSpangled Banner and we have a Flag flying in the front of our home. As a minister I always honored those who had served in the military. When Norton Air Force Base was active, the church I pastored had about 100 service men and women in the congregation. Everyone in our country, citizen or immigrant should respect our Flag, The Star-Spangled Banner, or the Pledge of Allegiance. If a person does not know the words the least we can do is to be respectful by being silent when the Flag passes by, the Star-Spangled Banner is sung, or the Pledge of Allegiance is said. Amen. Selah. So be it.

Aguila r vote s to establ ish a pa thway to c itizenship f or Dreamers and TPS holders

L

ast week Rep. Pete Aguilar voted to pass H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act, which was adopted in the House of Representatives with bipartisan support. The bill would establish a pathway to citizenship for immigrants living in the US under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) status. A recent study by the Center for American Progress estimates that the bill could provide protections for up to 2.5 million immigrants, including over

562,000 Dreamers in California.

“Throughout my time in Congress, one of my top priorities has been to help Dreamers, who know no other country as their home, secure their futures here in the United States. The Dream and Promise Act is a beacon of hope to the thousands of Dreamers in my community and throughout the country who have waited too long for an opportunity to step out of the shadows and build their lives as citizens of the country they call home. I’m proud to have helped pass this landmark legisla-

tion, and I look forward to continuing my advocacy on behalf of the immigrant community,” said Rep. Aguilar.

“Since the president ended DACA, I’ve had to live in a state of uncertainty. The Dream and Promise Act ends that uncertainty and allows me to continue working toward the future I want in the country I call home. I’m grateful to Congressman Aguilar for his support for this bill,” said Silvia Ferrer, a DACA recipient from San Bernardino and student at University of California, River-

side. “Since I first applied for DACA, I’ve been waiting for the opportunity that H.R. 6 provides. With a path to citizenship, Dreamers like me can continue growing our careers, contributing to our communities and building our lives in the country where we grew up. I’m proud to have an advocate in Washington who stands up for my community,” commented Letty Herrera, a DACA recipient and former intern in Rep. Aguilar’s San Bernardino and Washington, DC offices. In the 115th Congress, Rep.

Aguilar led his colleagues in a bipartisan effort to force a vote on the USA Act, bipartisan legislation he co-authored with Texas Republican Rep. Will Hurd that established a path to citizenship for Dreamers. As Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, Aguilar recently secured language in the 2020 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Bill that will allow DACA recipients to be eligible for federal employment.

For the first time in YG’s history, all

four programs in Riverside, San Bernardino, Coachella Valley, and Temecula were present together. “We’re proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our young people who are modeling philanthropy across the region,” said Michelle Decker, President and CEO of The Community Foundation. “The future belongs to our youth, who are becoming leaders in their own right, helping to solve the ongoing challenges their peers face.” With representatives from 27 high schools in both counties, 97 Youth Grantmakers make up the Riverside, San Bernardino,

Coachella Valley, and Temecula (Native) programs. Since the inception of this program, Youth Grantmakers have awarded over $387,000 to 155 nonprofit agencies. In 2018-2019, they made grants to the following nonprofits:

n Tuesday, June 4th the Special Olympics Torch Run came through the City of San Bernardino. The torch was passed from the California Highway Patrol to the San Bernardino Police Department (SBPD) on Hospitality Lane, adjacent to the Claim Jumper restaurant, when the run continued to the SBPD station on 7th and D Street. Members from the SBPD joined Special Olympics athlete Brett Laza at the starting point. Leading the pack from Claim Jumper was San Bernardino Assistant Police Chief Eric McBride, Brett Laza, and SBPD Sergeant John Echevarria who was holding the torch for the beginning portion of the run. The Law Enforcement Torch Run Special Olympics flag was carried throughout the duration of the run. During the event, the torch and flag were rotated among runners. A motorcycle escort and a small motorcade escorted runners through the city. Taking a 4-mile scenic tour through the southern portion of the city, runners went west on Hospitality Lane to E Street, north

to 2nd Street, east to D Street, north past City Hall to the Police Department at the corner of 7th and D Street. Many motorists showed their support by honking car horns and waving at runners. The Southern California leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run actually started on May 28th, in the City of Chula Vista. Law Enforcement agencies throughout Southern California will take the torch through their area, then pass the torch to another agency. The agencies that ran on Tuesday were Riverside Police Department, Riverside Division of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), University of California Riverside Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Moreno Valley Police Department, Val-Verde Unified School Police, March Air Force Reserve Base, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Redlands Police Department, San Bernardino Division of the CHP, San Bernardino Police Department, San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, San Bernardino City Unified School District Police, and the Colton Police Department. Abbey Leffler, Regional Director

for the Special Olympics Southern California I.E. Region who coordinated the event said there are over 4,000 athletes who train and compete in the Inland Empire. The Summer Games Championships were held June 8th and 9th at Cal State Long Beach. Sergeant John Echevarria from the SBPD has been coordinating events with the Special Olympics. On April 11, 2019, the SBPD and the Special Olympics Southern California I.E. Region partnered to host a Tip-A-Cop event at the San Bernardino Claim Jumper restaurant. About 40 volunteers from the San Bernardino Police Department teamed up with Claim Jumper servers to promote and raise funds for the Special Olympics. Also helping with the Tip-A-Cop were several Special Olympics athletes, who teamed up with police officers. The SBPD volunteers consisted of police officers, police reserve officers, community service officers, citizens patrol members, and several Police Explorer Post members. Over $3,000 was raised during the Tip-A-Cop event, which will be used to fund activities for the Special Olympics athletes.
