he Colton VFW 6476 at 1789 N. 8th Street in Colton will be holding its 4th Annual Car and Motorcycle Show on Saturday, September 14, 2019. The event is held at the VFW grounds each year to raise money for the organization and their outreach efforts. On Saturday morning, the VFW will have breakfast burritos and menudo to start the day off right; sales will begin at 9 a.m. For lunch, they will be offering hamburgers and hot dogs along with other food items to enjoy throughout the day. Aubrianne Kester, the President of the VFW Auxiliary said, “The event will include the car and motorcycle exhibition, a display of custom bicycles, entertainment, vendors, a Kona Ice truck and food sales. The public is welcome, and those who might be interested in joining the VFW are encouraged to come out to support the veterans in the club and throughout the community.” There will be trophies given for various categories (Best of Show, Top 15 Cars and Top 3 Bikes). At this time there are still a few openings available for anyone

n Thursday, August 22, the Rialto Police Department visited the Center for Employment Training (CET). This was not a routine call, or visit, however. Chief of

Police Mark Kling, Captain Anthony Vega, Captain Mark Adams, Corporal Dwuan Rice, and Chris Constantino from the Rialto PD Finance Department presented a scholarship to five deserving CET students. The Rialto Reentry Scholarship

of $13,621 was divided among students who are on parole. Each student has taken active steps to better their lives and the funds will help reduce the cost of their student loans. The scholarship recipients are: Brandon White, Tony Elkins, Paul Gamboa and

nthony Ray Guillen, a long time Colton resident, passed away at Veterans Hospital in Loma Linda on August 18th. He is survived by his three sons, their spouses, and his four grandchildren. He is also survived by his fiancée and her two

sons. He was 68 years old. Services will be held at Montecito Memorial Park and Mortuary on Sept. 16th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a graveside service the following day, Sept. 17th at 10 a.m.

magine a world where everyone can live free from pollutants. This goal is part of Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s State Legislators recent bill for California to generate 100 percent of its electricity from carbon-free sources by 2045. While many states are setting renewable energy goals, in December of 2018, California became the first in the nation to mandate that new homes be solarized beginning in 2020. GRID Alternatives is making great strides as part of the solution to clean, renewable energy technology. GRID was founded in 2001 during the California Energy crisis by two engineering professionals, Ericka Mackie and Tim Sears. Their vision was to make renewable energy technology and job training accessible to underserved communities worldwide. GRID is now a national leader in providing these valuable resources and creating a pathway to solar jobs to under-resourced communities and communities of color around the globe. GRID was selected by the CPUC to serve as the statewide program manager for its Single-family Affordable Solar Homes (SASH) incentive program in 2008, prompting an expansion in California. Mackie and Searsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; vision has now become a reality through GRIDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s people-first model, which helps put money back into familiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pockets, reduces the energy cost burden for housing providers, and jumpstarts solar careers. GRID has nine affiliate offices serving all of California, Colorado, Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. Also, an international program serving Nicaragua, Nepal and Mexico. GRID provides the system design and engineering, obtains building permits, procures equipment, prepares and submits rebates and utility interconnection paperwork, and provides an industry-standard 10year labor warranty and 20-year equipment warranty. Solar installations are led by trained GRID staff, who provide oversight and training to volunteers and job trainees. The outreach team is responsible for engaging and educating the homeowners regarding energy efficiency and helps streamline the process from application to installation. These services are possible through support that GRID receives from government agencies, state and local incentives, private foundations, corporate sponsors and individual donors. GRID Alternatives Inland Empire (GRID IE) an affiliate of GRID Al-

ternatives, was established in 2011 and serves Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Since its inception, GRID IE has installed solar for over 1,700 families and helped households and housing providers save $56 million in lifetime electricity costs, while training over 2,600 people. GRID IE has grown exponentially over these last eight years, from its modest beginning of a few staff, to now over 30 including interns and a SolarCorps fellowship (AmeriCorps) program. Renewable energy can drive economic growth and environmental benefits in communities most impacted by underemployment, pollution and climate change. GRID focuses its efforts on communities that have been disproportionately impacted by high- energy costs and pollution. The southern region sees exceptionally hot temperatures even in the triple digits for some cities, which is burdensome to families in disadvantaged communities due to increased electrical usage in summer months. The average family can expect to save between 50 to 75 percent on their electricity bills once they receive their no cost solar system. GRID Alternatives partners with affordable housing organizations, job training groups, government agencies, municipalities, utilities and local communities to make solar a win for everyone. GRID has an array of unique programs through its Workforce and Volunteer team that provides hands-on job training and creates a path to solar jobs. These programs include: - Women in Solar â&#x20AC;&#x201C;a national Women in Solar Initiative to encourage more women to pursue a career in the solar industry and support them in their professional endeavors. - Tribal Program â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Tribal Program focuses on offering tribal communities access to renewable energy and education about the solar industry. - Solar Futures - provides both classroom and hands-on solar education to K-14 students, with a focus on high school juniors and seniors. Such ignorance could destroy it and our republic.

becoming very tyrannical, the Founders created a republic instead, thus we pledge allegiance to â&#x20AC;&#x153;the republic for which it stands.â&#x20AC;? A lynch mob is a democracy; everyone voting to hang the accused except the one proposed to be hung.

Those in this camp prefer the popular vote but without the College a close race would make the election far less settled and result in massive civil unrest perhaps even civil war. The Electoral College legitimizes the outcome.

There is no language in the Constitution authorizing a popular vote for the president because the people tend to vote for leaders promising the most for their vote, but the Constitution is designed to give nothing to anyone except the opportunity to maximize their talent in an environment of freedom from excessive government. The moment government takes from one and gives to another, recipient voters henceforth expect something for their vote and politicians have shown they can be purchased. President Obama offered free cell phones to entice voters and Bernie Sanders free college. It becomes a â&#x20AC;&#x153;blood sportâ&#x20AC;? as to which candidate can give the most â&#x20AC;&#x153;goodies,â&#x20AC;? out of the public treasury, to get elected. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gift givingâ&#x20AC;? should not be in the equation.

In the 2016 presidential election Trump won 304 electoral votes to Clintons 227, but Clinton bested Trump with 1 1/2 million more popular votes out of 125,505,086 castâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a little over one percent. Imagine, under a popular vote, the endless recounts, accusations of voter fraud to be investigated, and the time to determine the outcome legitimizing the winnerâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;if that were even possible. As volatile and emotional as the reaction to the Trump victory was, who can guarantee that the losing side would not revolt. One might argue that in a democracy everyone should have an equal vote and a simple majority should be what counts. But the Founding Fathers did not create a democracy. They universally opposed it because it failed in Athens and Rome and hoped that descendants would never turn what they created into such. The word democracy is not in any of our original governing documentsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; the word republic is. Benjamin Franklin referred to democracy as two wolves and a lamb voting on what they would have for lunch; the well armed lamb contesting the vote. Realizing that the majority is not always right and, as such, could trample the rights of the minority

The Founding Fathers left the election of the president to the states through their population. The vote system they created, referred to as the Electoral College, spread the vote geographically by states, and favored the informed over the less informed. Everyone knew that a popular vote could be won by a few populated states, (today as few as ten, some say four), and that rural states or sections would never see the candidate nor would an appeal be made to their interests. To equalize the population advantage and encourage candidates to make a larger geographical appeal, the College gave population-deprived states disproportionately at least three votes. Although candidates could still ignore the rural states, the College made it decidedly less

tempting to do so. As described in the Constitution, states select a number of voters for president equal to the number of members of Congress (both House and Senate) they have. These individuals, selected by the state legislatures presumably for their integrity, experience, success, and wisdom, are presumably less emotionally driven and less susceptible to the emergence of a popular tyrant or someone constitutionally risky. Remember, Adolph Hitler was elected. Presumably this would have been thwarted had Germany a functioning electoral college to mitigate the emotion or ignorance of the masses. Under a democracy a dangerous individual, knowingly hostile to the concepts of a republic, could occupy this position to destroy it. The citizens chosen to be Electoral College voters do so in their separate state capitols usually in late November and that vote is sent to, and read by, the vice president of the United States before a combined session of both Houses of Congress usually the first week in December. Normally there is little coverage of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;realâ&#x20AC;? election of the president and this, usually negative. This process is certainly not without its problems, but when the ill informed have the same vote strength, or higher (because they are the majority), as the well informed, the Electoral College offsets this by placing the weight of government in favor of reason and experience over emotion. It remains the best system in the world. I realize that in a day when we have high-speed communication it is easy to assume that, as a result, we have high-speed knowledge and experience as well. As a college professor in the subject area, I emphatically argue otherwise. Nothing replaces the benefits of reason and experience and these donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come high speed. So the states elected Trump by 34 Electoral College votes more than the 270 needed and Clinton 43 underâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a clear, clean, decisive vote for both winner and loser. Only the ill-informed would change to a system that guarantees confusion and chaos. Dr. Harold W. Pease is a syndicated columnist and an expert on the United States Constitution. RID Alternatives is the nation’s largest community-based nonprofit solar installer that makes renewable energy technology and job training accessible to underserved communities. To date, GRID Alternatives Inland Empire (GRID IE) has had a significant impact in the inland region with over 1,700 families who have benefited from GRID’s programs and over 2,700 people that have received handson job training. Last month, GRID IE installed a 2.7 kW solar system on the home of a San Bernardino family. The Catalan family recently purchased their home through Neighborhood

Partnership Housing Services (NPHS). They can expect to save up to 75 percent on their electric bill thanks to GRID. Each GRID Alternatives installation provides invaluable handson job training for volunteers and job trainees seeking work in the solar industry. This installation was a special ‘Women’s install’, which is part of a national women’s initiative that encourages women to gain experience in this growing industry. Today is National Women’s Equality Day, and women are underrepresented in today’s solar industry, particularly in installation and construction positions. According to The Solar Foundation’s U.S. Solar Industry Diversity Study 2019, women make up only 26 percent

of the solar workforce, compared to 46 percent of the total U.S. workforce, and there is 26 percent gender wage gap, with men more likely to earn higher wages than women at all levels. GRID IE’s recent San Bernardino solar installation was led by an all women construction team, including volunteers who came even as far as Florida to participate. One volunteer, Diane Louie, has accumulated over 1,500 volunteer hours with GRID and is the one of GRID’s first volunteers since the organizations’ inception. Words to Think About: The impor tance of words; Constitution, churches in jeopardy

ords are my stock in trade. From an early age I became aware of the importance of words. My Dad introduced me to the local library and even bought me books to read. I became adept at reading serious books and fiction. I even had a book on the Bible for children. Early on I became aware that “Words Have Consequences.” They describe character, attitudes and beliefs. Recently a very good friend and I became engaged in an intense conversation. His view was that words are not as important as deeds. Words are not as important as actions-what a person does. Lying is not as important as what a person does. My contention is that some words are both. For instance, “lying is a deed.” Love is a word but also an action. In fact, there are many words that have double meanings. It is called “double entendre.” I have a penchant for certain words. For instance: hyperbole,

For instance in many Hispanic countries the word agua changes from meaning “water.” The reason is simple. For instance, in many cities, the apartments do not have sewers or sink. They discard dirty water of all kinds, out the window, to the street. If a companion sees it, he yells AGUA, meaning STOP. Immediately. Words are the basis for the plethora of Christian denominations. An analysis of a few will clarify my thoughts. Catholics have allegiance for purgatory, the confessional, the seven sacraments, the establishment of the Vatican. They must bow at the shrine of Augustine. He initiated most of the above beliefs. Methodists look to John and Charles Wesley for their beliefs. Their evangelism stems from the Wesleyan theology. Methodism has a significant place in my heritage. I’ve pastored several of their churches. The Social Gospel has its begin-

Presbyterians are indebted to John Knox for their denomination. Starting from Scotland, they have swept around the world. They also have been the motivation for foreign missionary endeavors. Words were essential for all the above denominations. Other groups like the Seventh Day Adventists the Mormons. The Jehovah Witness, the Nazarenes, etc. all have had strong founders with words that clarified their beliefs. Southern Baptists are not only the largest denomination, but the most isolated in their beliefs. They very strongly believe in immersion baptism but affirm their uniqueness as Christians. A humorous story will describe them A man died and was ushered into heaven. Immediately Saint Peter gave him a tour of heaven. When they reached a large room, Peter whispered for his companion to be silent. Because Peter said, “They are Baptists and they think they are the only ones in heaven.”

The two basic organizations that have dominated our world in the last 3,000 years are Religion and Governments. Believe it or not, they have survived because of “words,” mostly by way of the printed page. I have a basic purpose in those last paragraphs. Religion and Democracy are both at a crossroads. Both are on the verge of decay and destruction. Since I retired in 1997, Stella and I have visited 23 different churches. We have attended ten different denominations and two Catholic. Obviously, more than once at several churches. After questioning we were informed that the attendance was down. Five of them averaged around 25 people in attendance. One was about 15 in attendance the day we were in attendance. Five of the churches were singing to a band, and standing for thirty minutes. All but three were very friendly and urged us to return. The sermons were varied. Two condemned other churches; four explained their denominations; one emphasized the LGBT;

four read their sermons. The ministers in 3 of the churches were female. Our country was founded on the written word, The Constitution. It has lasted more than 240 years. It has been a model for countries around the world. I’m afraid that its future is in jeopardy. Politicians have mocked it and violated its words. The will of the citizenry is ignored. The standard of a Republic is meaningless. The destiny of churches is also in danger. The Gospel of Jesus is seldom heard. The opinions of the clergy is dominate. No wonder the attendance is down. Interesting Preaching seems to be a lost art. In one church, the Minister talked for 30 minutes about his wife being pregnant. It was his Sermon of the day. What a pity. Historians have compared the U.S.A. for many years with the Roman Empire, but unless we citizens don’t change it, our nation will follow the destiny of the Roman Empire. Amen. Selah. So be it.

How to manage the fear of loneliness in your life By Stan Popovich

any people deal with the fear of living alone. Loneliness can make someone feel depressed and unhappy so its important to not let being alone be a factor in your life. Here is a list of techniques that a person can use so that the fear of being alone doesn’t become a major issue in their lives. 1. The first step is to find an activity that you enjoy and where you can meet a lot of people. For instance, joining a group activity such as a volleyball group, women’s club, or making crafts can be a great way to meet people. Doing something that you like to do will make you happy and will increase your chances of making friends. 2. Spending time with animals can be a great source of companionship. Whether you have a dog or you go to your local shelter, spending time with an animal or

pet can help us to feel better. Animals can be of good company to all of us whether we are alone or not. 3. Helping others through community service can be of some help. There are many people out there who could benefit from your time and talents. Helping others can give you a source of pride and accomplishment and also can lead to friendships. 4. It isn’t fun being alone, but sometimes there are worse things. For instance, imagine that you are married or stuck in a relationship that you can’t get out of and also

makes you miserable. Not only do you have to live with this person, it would be difficult to get out of the relationship because of various financial or personal reasons. As a result, you are stuck living with someone that you can’t stand and makes you depressed every single day of your life. With this viewpoint, being alone doesn’t sound that bad. 5. Spending time with God can help. Spending time with God and asking God for help in your time of loneliness can be of great comfort. You never know how God will work in your life. Including God in your every day living can help reduce your loneliness. Talk to a priest or minister if you are unsure on what to do. 6. The important thing is to do something constructive. Sitting around and doing nothing will not make things any better whether it is dealing with the fear of being alone or something else. Take it one day at a time and stay committed in trying to solve your problem.

(HH) and Moose Toys on Tuesday, August 27th, a partnership that provides yet another tool to help patients in their healing process. Healthy Humor is a national nonprofit arts organization which, through their Red Nose Docs, uses the magic of theater and circus skills to reintroduce play as a welcome distraction for pediatric patients. Australian toy company, Moose Toys, partnered with HH to bring healthcare clowning to Children’s Hospital, and the Red Nose Docs will be rounding on various units twice a week to visit patients. The celebration brought a welcome distraction for both inpatients and outpatients at the hospital with refreshments and

Belinda Gruebner, executive vice president of global marketing for Moose Toys, said the partnership between organizations would continue reaching the heart of Moose’s mission. “Our goal at the end of the day is to make kids ‘Superhappy’ — the work our Red Nose Docs do here and in other hospitals is incredible,” Gruebner said.
