enny Robbins has not missed one day of work selling newspapers at the corner of Valley and Rancho since he started there in 1996. Every morning, he’s a steadfast figure for those driving by, quick with a wave and a smile to complete their morning commute. People think that Kenny became a Colton celebrity of sorts last June when he was featured in an IECN Colton Courier article, but when asked about his relationship with the people of Colton, Kenny smiles and says, “These people have been good to me, very good to me. I was helping out at a Rose parade one year, I think it was 2003, you know, selling programs and things. As I walked around doing my job, I could hear people calling out to me, ‘Hey, aren’t you from Colton?’ and I have to admit, I was surprised, like I was some sort of a celebrity. But Colton people are good to me.”

So, last June it was mentioned that Kenny was homeless at the time, living at Elizabeth Davis Park. Colton people posted an SOS on the Facebook page ‘You know you’re from Colton if…’ and asked Colton-ites to share some money, gift cards and love with the beloved community icon. All of this brought his plight to the attention of the Lighthouse Community Services in Colton, and they stepped forward to do what they do best work to find Kenny a home. They enrolled him into their veterans program on June 14, 2019. On September 5, 2019, Mr. Robbins signed a lease for his very own apartment and moved in on Saturday September 14, 2019. It’s a beauty of a one bedroom in a quiet complex that is all his. As he opened the door for the first time and took a tour with several dignitaries who came to congratulate and encourage him, Kenny seemed a little Kenny, cont. on next pg.

n a sunny Monday morning, children are playing on the Crestmore Elementary School playground, when a little girl holding a basketball sits down on a big yellow bench. She looks a

little sad and lonely, but in just a few minutes, two other little girls cheerily come up to her to ask her to play and soon everyone is all smiles. That’s the magic of Crestmore Elementary School’s new Buddy Bench. Students who might be in need of a friend simply sit down

on the bench and other children know to come up and see if they can be that friend. Even though the bench has only been in existence for a few weeks, it’s already making a difference for the students in need of a friend, as well as those who step up to help, noted Elementary

Cooley Ranch students honor 9-11 with Remembrance Day ceremony By Marina Rojas

Looking throughout the sea of red, white and blue dressed miniature patriots, it was hard to realize that the majority of those little faces were not even alive on that fateful day in 2001 or that the oldest among them had been barely born, or was maybe one or

The Cooley Ranch students all started their day reporting to the flagpole, where the Colton High School Navy Jr. ROTC student color guard presented the colors and stood at rapt attention as Boy Scout Troop 42 members raised the flag to half-mast. After the Pledge of Allegiance echoed throughout the courtyard, everyone sang some patriotic songs. The Kiwanis Club K-Kids offered information on the meaning of 9-

11 and then shared a poem with the students. 9-year old Cub Scout Devan Smith felt it was important that the students remember what happened on 9-11, stating, “We need to remember everything that happened and grow from it.” When asked what he learned from the story of 9-11 Devan replied, “I learned that everyone should be nice to someone else.” He and fellow Cub Scout Sef

Miller, also 9, had helped put up the flag. “9-11 is a day about respect and remembering,” said Sef, “and our flag is about pride and bravery.”

Isabel Salas, the Cub Scout Troop 42 leader stated, “This is a good way for the students to learn about history.”

Dr. Gerald Matthews, Assistant Principal at Cooley Ranch, said that the purpose of the event is to allow students a time to “reflect on how our actions can help move our country forward while providing the students an opportunity for service, kindness, honor and unity.”

Even the youngest students seemed to know what the day meant in American history and could share the story of those who had lost their lives. Looking across at the faces that represent our country’s future, it was clear that at Cooley Ranch those of 911 will not be forgotten.

Kenny overwhelmed by it all. When asked what it means to him to have his own place to call home, Kenny answered, “To me, this means I no longer have to sleep with one eye open. It means I can quit worrying if something bad will happen to me, and when it rains, I don’t have to figure out how to keep dry anymore,” he looked around at his new home and smiled, “This is a good thing.” Representatives from the 5th District Supervisor Josie Gonzalez’s office were present. Communications Specialist Brandon Fahey was filming a documentary about Robbins’ journey from homelessness, and Chief of Staff Dan Flores had come out to offer inspiration and encouragement. Council Member and Mayor Pro Tempore of the City of San Bernardino, sits on the Interagency Council of Homelessness for San Bernardino County. She was on hand to make sure Mr. Robbins knew to reach out to her and the San Bernardino Mayor’s Office if any need should arise in the future. “We’re happy to see Mr. Robbins in his new home,” she said, “and we certainly want to make sure that he knows we will do everything in our power to see that he is never without a place to call home in the future. We wanted him to know that we are here for him at all times.” Lighthouse Social Service Centers had filled the new apartment with furniture from Heroes Warehouse in Fontana, and gift baskets of food and household products. The refrigerator was full, and the cabinets were stocked in a wel-

come home gesture. Karen Young-Lowe, CEO of Lighthouse praised her staff for all of the hard work they did on behalf of Mr. Robbins. “I am so fortunate to be working with such a compassionate and giving staff,” she said, “they go the extra mile, especially for our veterans. I am so grateful that we are able to provide this kind of help for our veteran heroes because without them, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy our lives as we know them. This has been a joyful event, and we’re so pleased to have been able to serve Mr. Robbins in this way.” As for Mr. Robbins, aka Colton’s beloved hometown celebrity Kenny, all of Colton wishes you the best of health and happiness in your new place. We’re thrilled to know you can rest easy each night in the comfort of your own home sweet home!

Team members worked together to make the bench happen, painting an existing bench a bright cheery yellow and emblazoning the bench with lettering that reads “Buddy Bench” in English and Spanish.

“They have so much goodness and kindness,” she said. “You just have to plant the seed and it’s going to grow.”

hink about a situation where you might encounter a law enforcement officer. For most people, the situation they imagine is negative. In San Bernardino, local police are changing that perception while making our community a safer environment to live and do business. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve restructured the force, and these efforts are already paying positive dividends for San Bernardino. The City has partnered with the San Bernardino Police Officers Association to bring a new playground to Littlefield/Schultis Park, and we are encouraging members of the community to get involved to make this a reality, including taking part in the bbq fundraiser hosted by the SBPOA coming up September 26th to support the project. We want people in San Bernardino to have opportunities to interact with law enforcement in positive settings. SBPD pop up tents are appearing regularly at spots throughout San Bernardino and mounted patrols are distributing resources to our neighbors on horseback. Community members are invited

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also addressing homelessness and public safety by connecting homeless individuals with resources to help them turn their lives around. San Bernardino is fortunate to have strong partnerships between city leaders, nonprofits, and law enforcement that are making our community safer and creating positive alternatives to crime. Despite budget challenges, no law enforcement officers have been laid off and in fact we are putting more officers on the street. Finally, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re using technology including social media and a GoRequest app, which enables people to file a report and track their report to resolution all from their mobile device. Improved public safety is essential to turning around San Bernardinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s image and attracting visitors, investment, and jobs. A safer community is one where our businesses can flourish and our children can achieve their potential. We also recognize such a vision is a team effort. We invite you to take part in the progress underway. Next time you see local law enforcement hosting a block party, setting up a pop up tent, or patrolling on horseback, we hope youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll say hello and thank them for their hard work for our community.

Two in three Medicare beneficiaries live with multiple chronic diseases. A new Trump administration proposal could make it harder for them to manage their conditions. The Department of Health and Human Services plans to change the way Medicare pays for potent, physician-administered medicines. Officials claim they can cut costs by imposing price controls on these drugs. In the long run, this price-capping scheme would reduce innovation and patient access to medicines. That would lead to worse patient outcomes and higher medical costs overall. The new proposal deals with Medicare Part B, which covers advanced drugs administered in physicians' offices and hospitals. These therapies help millions of patients with cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and other debilitating conditions. Physicians currently purchase these medicines up front and bill Medicare for reimbursement after treating patients. The government repays doctors the average U.S. sales price of the drugs, which cost almost twice as much in America as in other developed countries.

To bring U.S. drug prices in line with prices in Europe and Canada, HHS plans to move to a "reference pricing" system. Part B drug reimbursements would be tied to the average prices paid in over a dozen foreign countries. Drugs are cheaper abroad for a reason. Most foreign governments impose artificially low price caps on drugs. If manufacturers refuse to meet these demands, governments refuse to cover those medicines. These low prices discourage companies from launching drugs in these countries. As a result, chronic disease patients suffer from reduced access to the latest medicines. Patients in the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, and the other countries included in HHS' reference pricing index waited a median of 14 months to access each new drug released between 2011 and 2018. Meanwhile, roughly 90 percent of these medicines were immediately available to Americans. If HHS' plan takes effect, delays like this will become common in the United States. That could be a death sentence for patients with late-stage cancers and other serious diseases.

The United States leads the world in biopharmaceutical innovation, producing more than half of all new medicines created worldwide. That research isn't cheap. It often takes billions of dollars to create a new drug. The overwhelming majority of experimental medicines fail during clinical trials. The administration's Medicare overhaul would decrease the potential returns on R&D investments. Firms would scale back research into breakthrough treatments for cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Over the next five years, 31 million Americans will be diagnosed with a chronic disease and 1.7 million will die from one. American researchers are currently working on thousands of experimental treatments. These advances could help patients live longer, healthier lives and avoid costly hospitalizations. But these treatments may not come to fruition if HHS begins capping drug prices. Kenneth E. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re tired of hearing about another killing. We are tired of hearing about our drug crisis. We are tired of hearing Washington and state politicians spout off about what they are going to do but all they do is get richer promising change, solutions and reform that never come. Americans are tired of all the arguing we see on television and hear on radio. We know how many of our social media friends feel about the issues. Whenever an issue comes up itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the same peo-

ple talking the same rhetoric as before. We already knew how they felt before they said anything. However, some people talk and some people act. About the only action it seems that matters much is voting and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sad when some Americans are tired of all of it but they still wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t drag themselves to the polls and vote. We hear a lot about reviving our economy and breathing more life into Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work places. We need someone to breathe some life into the average American. he Military Explorers program has been shaping the lives of San Bernardino students and beyond, since 2013.

Explorers not only wear the uniform, but earn ranks by taking tests according to regulation. They also advance by attending schools such as Non Commissioned Officer School and Officer Candidate School.

“The Military Explorers of the Inland Empire Post III is an afterschool career pathways program sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America for students who are 12 to 20 years old,” said Public Affairs Officer SPC Simeone N. Miller.

In its sixth year, the program currently holds 70 students in the program and it’s looking to continue growing now and in the future.

The program mirrors US Army rank structure, it is supported by a staff of veterans, active duty service members, and former Explorers.

“The program has done a lot of great things for me, including making me feel like I belonged when I used to not feel that way back in middle school. During my time as a cadet, I learned a lot of important skills that I've taken with me as a Political Science major at Chaffey College and will continue to when I become a lawyer in the Army,” continued

The program was founded by a San Bernardino City Unified School District teacher and veteran, Chief Phillip Ayala. “Our mission is to provide America's youth with easier access to military recruiters, ASVAB preparation, college ROTC scholarship and enrollment opportunities, and service academy and accessions information. More importantly, we teach leadership development, insight into what it is like to be in the military, the basic enlistment requirements, and hands-on technical training that mirrors certain US Army Military

“I learned how to better organize tasks assigned to me, delegate them, work in a team, and give that team direction. The program accomplishes this by placing cadets in a variety of leadership positions such as first sergeant, company commander, battalion commander, and battalion sergeant major. I myself finished the program as the Third Commander of the Explorers at the rank of Cadet Captain before taking my current position as an Assistant Advisor,” concluded Miller. Words to Think About: Deputy Gerald Goodlow, Jr.

erald Ross Goodlow, Jr. is a Sheriff’s Deputy in Los Angeles. He is 28 years old and currently lives in Norwalk, California. The youngest of three children, he has two sisters: Jennifer, 32 and Rachel, 30. His father is a Physician and his Mother a Pharmacist. The four live in Highland, California. Gerald graduated from Arrowhead Christian Academy in 2009 and continued his education at Riverside Junior College, receiving an AA degree. It was there he was inspired to become active as a law enforcement officer. I first met Gerald when he was a high school student. We attended the same church in Redlands. The church employed him to clean the patio and sidewalks around the church on Sunday. Since Stella and I were always early for the services, he and I became friends. In an interview he remembered me showing him magic tricks. I also remembered him and his father being ushers in the early service. Law enforcement is not and has not always been an honorable part of society. One of Gerald’s dreams

is to remedy that. He is a credit to the L.A. Sheriff’s Department. He literally glows when he talks about being an officer. He is proud of what he does. Standing 6 feet tall and muscular, he excelled in every aspect of his training.

In the 6 months of training he learned all aspects of physical combat, all aspects of weapon use and verbal persuasion.

When Gerald saw the man, he was told that he had swallowed something from the street and immediately had collapsed. The man’s vitals had stopped functioning, he had a breathing ventilator, he was in a coma, and IV’s were in place; there was no signs of life. His death was imminent.

Being black, he endured various aspects of racial testing. He speaks highly of his comrades. He has their backs and they have his. He maintains a constant physical fitness by frequently visiting the L.A. Fitness Gyms. Gerald and a close friend have several clients in physical fitness programs. In addition to being a Deputy and having a fitness program, Gerald has a number of priority views. For instance, he is a definite religious person. He regularly attends the local Rock Church in San Bernardino, south Waterman. He links Los Angeles and San Bernardino has two of the most dangerous cities in Southern California. They are not only dangerous for law enforcement but also for regular citizens. He appreciates his fellow deputies as friends. However, he refuses to limit his social time to be spent with fellow deputies. His reason is simple. In every vocation, when participants get together, the subject of discussions tend to be about their work. This time she made 2 Bravery Blankets one for police and one for fire. She then went on Facebook Live and asked the community to nominate one police officer and one fire fighter. Several were nominated but the community voted overwhelmingly for Colton Fire Chief Tim McHargue, and Officer J. Hanna voted for police. So far Flores has made and donated about 50 blankets to the community. Each blanket cost about $50 to make and sends a

After he prayed, he started documenting everything. After about 45 minutes a nurse said the man was moving, his vitals were functioning. Thirty minutes later he began to breathe better; 30 minutes later he began coughing and the nurses raised the bed. He began to speak. After his release from the Center, he immediately went to see his daughters. The nurses and doctor were literally amazed. He thanked Gerald profusely. Gerald said to me, “The situation was a DIVINE INTERVENTION.” I agree. Amen. Selah. So be it.

4. Focus on the facts of your situation and not your thoughts. When people are depressed, they rely on their fearful, depressing, and negative thoughts. Your fearful thoughts are exaggerated and are not based on reality. When you are depressed, focus on the facts of your current situation and not on what you think. Do not assume anything regarding your current situation.

Here are six reasons why suicide is not an option regarding your problems. 1. Things change over time. Regardless of your situation, events do not stay the same. You may feel very bad today, but it won’t last forever. Everything changes over time. This includes your current situation. 2. There are always other options. You may feel lost and confused, but the answers to your specific problems are out there. The key is that you have to find the answers. The answers to your problem will not come to you. As mentioned before, the first step in finding the solution to your problem is to seek help from a qualified professional.

3. You can’t predict the future. Remember that no one can predict the future with one hundred percent certainty. Even if the thing that you are afraid of does happen, there are circumstances and factors that you can’t predict which can be used to your advantage. For instance, your at work and you miss the deadline for a project you have been working on for the last few months. Everything you feared is coming true. Suddenly, your boss comes to your office and tells you that the deadline is extended and that he forgot to tell you the day before. This unknown factor changes everything.

5. Go to the hospital when it is that bad. If things are so bad that you are unable to function, drop everything and go to your local hospital or crisis center immediately. The people at the hospital will take care of your situation right away. 6. No situation is hopeless. There are many people and organizations that are willing to help you, but you must be willing to take advantage of this help. Regardless of your situation, take advantage of the assistance that is around you. Every problem has a solution. You just have to find it.

Students gather at Cal State for Reading Rally

The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools held a reading rally field trip for approximately 2,300 pre-kindergartners to third-graders from 198 county schools on the campus of Cal State San Bernardino Tuesday, Sept. 10. The event is in support of San Bernardino County’s Vision2Read Initiative, which looks to promote early literacy and support all children from cradle to career. As part of the Vision2Read Initiative and Footsteps2Brilliance early literacy program, there is a reading challenge for children now taking place to have more than 5 million words read this summer.
