Tuition-free college, Latinas on the Diamond event

Maryjoy Duncan Managing Editor

Due to the numerous campaign ads placed in the paper this week you’ll notice there isn’t much editorial content, but there are a number of stories that have been posted this week to our website: www.iecn.com, some of which have been shared across our social media platforms. One of those stories that could potentially be a game changer for the college-bound population is the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to earmark $10 million to begin exploring a twoyear tuition-free program at both Crafton Hills College and San Bernardino Valley College. By mobilizing existing financial aid programs and SBCCD funding sources, college officials estimate that 1,000 local high school graduates could benefit. While the student eligibility requirements are yet to be structured, SBCCD’s two-year tuition-free program would explore a cradle-to-career approach to guide students and families early in their academic career to prepare for college. According to the Public Policy Institute of California’s report, “Meeting California’s need for college graduates, Inland Southern California plays a critical role in closing the statewide skills gap. PPIC has estimated that the state will need 1.1 million more college-educated workers by 2030 to keep up with economic demand. Despite having high school graduation rates higher than the statewide average, Inland South-

ern California fares particularly poorly with respect to college enrollment, according to the PPIC report. It will be interesting to see how the SBCCD will implement tuition-free college and the impact, if any, it will have on enrollment and graduation rates. ************************ This Saturday the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will hold a special community collecting event at Cal State San Bernardino, capping its successful multi-year collecting initiative, “Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big Leagues. Cal State is home to the Latino Baseball History Project. The all-day program (free and open to the public), themed “Latinas on the Diamond, has two goals: to record Latinx baseball and softball stories, as well as celebrate Latina players who, in the fight for gender equality, forged their own identities and support networks through the game. Program takes place at the Pfau Library. Memorabilia that enrich the narrative of Latinx baseball/softball history is welcomed. The public is invited to bring vintage photographs, baseball/softball uniforms, gloves, bats, balls, baseball cards, programs, lineup cards, ticket stubs, autographs, newspaper stories, and more to this event for consideration by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History to add to the national collections and possible future exhibition on Latinos and baseball. Program: 8 - 9 a.m. registration and breakfast; 9 - 12 a series of panels and presentations; 12 - 1 p.m. lunch; 1 - 1:30 Salazar family uniform donation to Smithsonian; 1:30 - 3 p.m. discussion on Jessica Mendoza, Estella Elias Acosta and Angelina “Jelly Felix; 3 - 5 p.m. photo collecting, scanning and video event.

An open letter to the voters of SB

Last week, recalled San Bernardino City Councilwoman Wendy McCammack attacked Susan Longville in an ugly and misleading mailer (more are likely to follow). Wendy’s attempt to return to politics five years after being thrown out of office depends on defeating this popular inthat voters cumbent overwhelmingly elected to the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District Board in 2014. Wendy’s hit piece misleads voters filled with ugly quotes from a bunch of politicians from Rialto, Redlands and Menifee! That’s why we, residents and leaders of San Bernardino that know Susan Longville best, are testifying to

voters about her experience and accomplishments in water policy that span more than two decades in California. We’re not alone in the respect we have for this regional water leader: • Cal State President Al Karnig chose Susan Longville to lead the Water Resources Institute for ten years. • The Governor appointed Susan Longville to stop pollution of our water serving on the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board. • Earlier this year, Mayor Carey Davis asked Valley District President Susan Longville to chair settlement negotiations between the city and two water districts that

were suing one another. • Under Susan’s leadership, those negotiations ended a multi-million-dollar settlement that supports two, new recycled water projects that the San Bernardino Valley desperately needs as the 20-year drought continues (with no end in sight). Please join us in re-electing Susan Longville for Water Board. Billionaire Tom Steyer replaces Soros as prominent Leftist funder

In a recent column “Billionaires Battle to Get Your Vote LibertyUnderFire documented leading funders for the right side of the political spectrum in the 2016 election as the Koch brothers, Charles and David. Those on the left side of the political spectrum were David Rockefeller (recently deceased) and George Soros. A new billionaire, Tom Steyer, has emerged outpacing both the right and the left in funding elections. But influence from the wealthy is nothing new. The “rich have been involved in directing public opinion for over a hundred years, first noted in our history textbooks, when Mark Hanna, who made his fortune in the iron business, paid off Congressman William McKinley’s personal indebtedness of $100,000, and elevated him onto the stage for president. He next “shook down the giants of the Industrial Revolution, banking, oil, steal, railroads, and etc. who wanted markets and “spheres of influence overseas. Capitalizing on their fear that they would lose their influence over government and money to someone like William Jennings Bryan, who would actually represent the common people, Hanna raised an enormous slush fund, the largest in U.S. History, of 16 million to Democratic opponent William Jennings Bryan’s mere one million. This enabled the giants of the Industrial Revolution to unite to “buy the presidency for William McKinley in 1896. With Mckinley’s successful conquest of much of Spain’s colonial holdings (Cuba, the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam) colonialism and world influence became the Republican Party’s foreign policy. When it became much less popular due to its needing to be defended by American troops, wall street influence went underground. President Woodrow Wilson spoke of this hidden force in his book The New Freedom (1913), when he wrote: “Since I entered

politics, I have chiefly had men’s views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the United States in the field of commerce and manufacture, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it.

John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan and others later united the class of wealth into the Institute of International Affairs in 1919, then two years later changed the name to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) thereafter providing the leadership and foreign policy of both major political parties and globalism took root in each. Rockefeller nephew David, in 1973 spread the wall street influence over Japan, Western Europe and North America in an effort to unify those three regions in his Trilateral Commission. This was the foreign policy of both major political parties and much of the West and Japan until Donald Trump’s election in 2016. Although David is recently deceased, his organization, the CFR, is the most influential political organization in the United States and will be for decades to come. Moreover, the leadership of The New York Times and Washington Post, like the government, is filled with its members ensuring a wide dissemination of their globalist messages; a message emulated by hundreds of other newspapers. Enter CFR member George Soros, the leading funder of farleft causes and elections the past two decades, who is said to have spent $25 million on Hilary Clinton and other democratic candidates in 2016 and so far another $15 million in the present midterms. His specialty is not gradual influence toward the left and world government as has been the influence of the CFR, but hardcore socialism and globalism. No one has as many organizations as combat ready and as highly fi-

nanced, as does George Soros. These include: ACORN, the Tides Foundation, Sojourners, The Quantum Fund, Media Matters, The Open Society Institute, Friends of the Earth, The Center for American Progress, The Apollo Alliance, The American Constitution Society and, MoveOn.org. Enter San Francisco billionaire Tom Steyer who “promised to spend at least $30 million to elect progressives [popular synonym for socialist] this campaign season making him the “most important Democratic donor in the United States. Steyer is openly urging the presidents removal through impeachment, even funding a video to that effect, and has, with Soros, bankrolled far left Andrew Gillum’s Florida campaign for governor hoping to flip the state from red to blue anticipating that the resulting electoral count increase could sway the nation for decades. Steyer “funneled about $800,000 into the Get Out the Vote initiative prior to the Gillum run (Ingraham Angle, August 29, 2018). The 100-plus year generational influence of the Rockefeller’s, John and David, and their organizations, principally the CFR, together with that of Soros money and organizations, and now, Steyer’s money, easily dwarf that of the Koch brothers, said to be funding most of the right side of the political spectrum. The billionaire club easily favors the Democratic Party and the far-left side of the political spectrum. What is far worse is that Soros and Steyer seem not to be promoting rank and file Democrats but instead radicals who want to upend our political system. It appears that the rich who initially controlled the Republican Party, then both major parties for over 100 years, now has much greater dominance over the Democratic Party. Should they succeed, we will become a socialist country. Dr. Harold W. Pease is a syndicated columnist and an expert on the United States Constitution. Words to T hi nk A bout: Per spe ctive s o f the Bi bl e

G. W. Abersold, Ph.D. There are basically four views of the accuracy of the Bible: 1. inerrancy, 2. plenary, 3. agnostic and 4. atheism. Every word is true, it contains truth, no one knows, and nothing is true. I am a PLENARIST. This article gives my views about certain Scriptures. Number 1. John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” I contend that God is the ANTECEDENT, not Jesus. The word “God” is used three times. Number 2. In the Epistle of Galatians chapter 4 verse 24, Paul says, “Such words were an ALLEGORY.” He is referring to Abraham, Isaac and Ishmael. An allegory is a myth. A story that contains a truth. Ancient Greeks were masters at their usage. So is the Bible: humans talking to snakes or living in the belly of a fish. Good example. The truth in Eve and the snake is about every human having choices. The same with Jonah. Recently, four famous

archeologists of Israel stated that the Old Testament was plagiarized from the Egyptian folklore. Rabbi Harold Kushner says, “The only way to understand the Old Testament is to see it as mythology. Number 3. The second return of Jesus. First John 5:7 states: “The Father, the Word (Jesus), and the Spirit are all One.” What it suggests is that Jesus has already returned the second time-Acts 2 – as the Holy Spirit. Number 4. This reference is Genesis 1:1. “In the beginning Elohim (God) created the heavens and the earth.” In the Hebrew language, any word that ends with an “m” is plural. So, the word Elohim is plural. It doesn’t refer to the Trinity, or it can. The concept of the Trinity was developed by the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. Its primary meaning is different. The word “created” in Hebrew is “bara” which is singular. The two words say something wonderful about the nature of Deity. His nature is profound. Elohim is great, He is good, He is awesome, He is helpful, He is a guide, He is understanding, helpful, concerned, loving. He is forgiving and merciful. You name it and that is Elohim (God). And there is no end to His love. Number 5. I refer to Isaiah 7:14. “A young woman will conceive.” Mary. Christians translate “young woman” as “virgin.” It is an incorrect translation. In the original Hebrew, the word BETHULAH is used which means “young woman.” The word for virgin is ALMAH which is not used.

Number 6. Verse 9 of Psalm 137 says, “how happy God is when we take the children of Babylon by their heels and beat their heads against a wall.” Researchers of the Bible have estimated that 10 million people have been killed in the Old Testament, supposedly at the wishes of God. Committed by Joshua, Gideon, Moses and David and others. Genocide. Israelis claim God gave them their country. Mentally ill people claim God told them to kill. All a perversion of their leaders. It is MIS-INFORMATION. Number 7. When I was in Seminary, a Bible professor stated that we would be a Paul Christian or a Jesus Christian. Why? Because of the beliefs of Paul or Jesus. Please read the 8th chapter of the Book of Romans. Paul believed in predestination. The opposite of freewill. Paul was a very perverse person. Brilliant to be sure. But many of his views are at various with each other at different times. This was also apparent in his relationships. He was constantly in conflict with his friends. Examples are Barnabas and John Mark. Certainly, his conflict with Peter are well known, as well as the church at Jerusalem. There is one other way in which Paul was controversial. As a psychologist, I’ve often described him as a paranoid psychophrenic. Extremely intellectual but also with contradictory opinions. I illustrate this with a couple quotations; from Adolf Hitler. These quotes are from Jack Huberman of Perseus Books, “Loy-

alty and responsibility toward the people and the Fatherland are most deeply expressed in Christian faith.” Also, “I am as before a Catholic and will always remain so.” Adolf Hitler was a mental case, as Paul was. The example I allude to above is Paul’s misogyny. Paul clearly shows his misogyny in Ephesians 5:22, 23. “Wives submit yourselves…the husband is the head of the wife.” In another command he states that wives, be silent in the church. His obvious disrespect of woman reveals his misogyny. Number 8. For 2000 years scores of Biblical scholars and historians have sought to understand the man called Paul. His theology, his life, his spirituality and above all, his humanity. The most unique approach that I’ve found is the work of Dr. Gor-

don Hynes, Ph.D. In his doctoral dissertation in 1936, he gave a totally different insight. The title of his work -that I have a copy of -is “IDEALISTIC AND STOIC BACKGROUNDS OF THE PHILOSOPHY OF APOSTLE PAUL.” For many years as a Professor at Redlands University he exposed the influence of Greek philosophers, Greek poets and the Stoic Seneca had upon him. After defining the Idealistic and Stoic philosophical views he compares them with the books of Paul. The Greek poets, Plato, Aristotle and Seneca. His results are amazing. There over 300 verses of Scripture that are either exact copies or paraphrases of the Greek philosophers. Hynes indicates exactly in his verses. In no way does this information minimize their significance. Amen. Selah. So be it.

Page A8 • October 25, 2018 • Inland Empire Community Newspapers Classic 2nd half is when the Dodgers turned on. They gained a huge lead in the division and were able to eek out their 6th straight division pennant. In the playoffs, they breezed through the Rockies and won game 7 in the NLCS against the Brewers, and now they’re looking for vengeance against a team that has a history of winning championships, the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox only competition, it seemed, was the Yankees, but they showed they were the best. They easily got through the Yankees when it mattered and ended on a division pennant. In the playoffs, they then faced the Yankees, and easily moved on to the ALCS. There, they faced the defending champion Astros, and defeated them in just 5 games, and are looking for yet another World Series for Boston. Lastly, predictions. Overall, the

Red Sox seem to be the better all around team, and despite the Dodgers’ recent success, I see the Red Sox winning the World Series in 6 games. However, it’s the Fall Classic where unknown heroes are born and anything can happen. We will just have to see how it plays out. Give BIG San Bernardino County two weeks away, schedule donations

G

ive BIG San Bernardino County is less than two weeks away, but you can beat the rush and schedule your donations today. The 24-hour online event, which will be held at givebigsbcounty.org, is designed to generate funding for nonprofits in the county while building a culture of philanthropy and giving throughout the community. On Oct. 30, donors are encouraged to go online and give to their favorite local causes and charities and celebrate their donations on social media using #GiveBIGSBCounty. The scheduled donations will process during the day of the campaign. “The ever-growing trend of Giving Days is spreading across the country, spurred by caring communities who’re embracing new ways of giving,” said Michelle Decker, President and CEO of The Community Foundation, which is coordinating the Give BIG San Bernardino County campaign with support by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors. “Since it started four years ago, Give BIG has raised more than $1.3 million for 333 San Bernardino County nonprofits. We’re encouraged that the community will show up again during the county’s biggest giving day.” ” Give BIG San Bernardino County is designed to raise awareness of the county’s fundraising needs and to help nonprofits become self-sustaining by expanding their donor bases.
