Colton Woman’s Club Continues to Shine

A

t the November business meeting, the Colton Woman’s Club (CWC) welcomed 75 members to a Thanksgiving-themed catered lunch, fully adorned with holiday decorations and filled with the spirit of sisterhood and community. With all of the challenges in life due to social problems, inflation, and the uncertain political landscape the Colton Woman’s Club has been a beacon of pride and purpose not only for its individual members, but for the community of Colton.

The Colton Woman’s Cub is the largest women’s organization in Colton with a membership of 108 active members. Since 1900, they have effectively established themselves as a major service club that is active in the Community, and who supports a number of local organizations, donates to charitable causes, and provides for the cultural and social needs of all our members.

Pat Collier, Past President commented, “This is a wonderful group of ladies, and one gentleman (Dr.G), who work hard, care for the community and are giving of their time and effort.” Upon elaborating, she went on to mention several activities in which the CWC participates, including the Colton Birthday Celebration, Veterans Day, the City Halloween Festival, the Winter Wonderland event, CJUSD student scholarships, candy for Santa Claus Inc., See’s candies fundraisers, backpack give-a-

ways, crafts for kids, stocking stuffers, gift cards, and much more.

In addition to these activities the CWC also provides several light socials for its members including arts n’ crafts, bingo, tea parties, dance lessons and Quarter mania. “The Clubhouse is a focal point for women to gather,” says Lorna Whitaker, long time member and pianist for the CWC. However, when a member finds themselves ill and unable to attend, several members make a home visit to offer encouragement, help with any basic needs and provide them with the latest news. “We also celebrate the birthdays of our members,” added Collier.

The current President is Judy Dishaw, who presides over the meetings and makes sure all the committees and activities are covered. “We have a great group of ladies,” she commented, and added, “We welcome new attendees to attend our meetings, and find out more about the CWC.” This is a wonderful outreach to get the members together and to welcome new people. SBVC Student and KVCR Intern Mariana Lapizco's Journey: From Bicultural Challenges to Global Stages with Bill Gates and Kamala Harris

M

By Manny Sandoval

ariana Lapizco’s life story reads like a script of resilience and adaptability, written across two nations and numerous life challenges. Born in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico, in 1998, Mariana’s early years were split between Mexico and the United States, profoundly shaping her character and future ambitions.

Reflecting on her childhood, Mariana shares, “Each move between countries was a lesson in adaptability. It was challenging but invaluable in shaping my ability to navigate new environments, a skill I’ve carried into my film career.”

Her educational journey, starting in Scottsdale, Arizona, was marked by significant transitions. Mariana recalls, “Adapting to English as a young kid in Arizona was initially scary, but I was lucky to have supportive teachers. The real challenge came when I returned to Mexico in third grade and had to learn to read and write in Spanish.”

Yet another move back to the United States in the eighth grade was a pivotal moment in her life as she permanently relocated to California with her hard-working single mother, also named Mariana Lapizco. Mariana reflects, “Leaving my grandma and friends in Mexico was heartwrenching. Adjusting to academic life in English, making new friends, and dealing with the emotional turmoil was a struggle.”

At Golden Valley Middle and Cajon High School, Mariana faced language barriers but found her strength in helping others. “I’ve always found joy in aiding others with similar language struggles. It’s a way of giving back, reflecting on my own journey,” she explains.

Mariana’s transformational journey at SBVC began with a pursuit in business administration in 2017. However, an opportunity to be involved in an SBVC Film, Television, and Media Student now Alumni Odin Contreras’ 48 hours Film Project assisted in discovering her true passion. “Stepping onto that film set opened a new world for me. I knew immediately that this was where I belonged,” Mariana enthuses.

Eventually, Lapizco garnered the courage to change her major from the publicly perceived “safe” major business administration to Film, Television, and Media. This change of major occurred after the film program’s Department Chair Lucas Cuny sat with Lapizco writing out all the career opportunities the program could lead her into so that she could share with her mother. The

rest is history.

Her linguistic prowess became an asset at KVCR where she began interning in spring 2022, translating scripts and gradually taking on more significant roles. “Working at KVCR now as a paid intern has been an incredible journey of growth. From translating scripts to directing and even producing – it’s been a dream come true,” Mariana shares.

Her outstanding abilities and story caught the attention of SBVC Chancellor Diana Rodriguez, leading to opportunities such as participating in a roundtable with the office of Vice President Kamala Harris and speaking with the Bill Gates Foundation, in both cases sharing the student experience and challenges faced in the Inland Empire. “These experiences have been monumental. They’ve allowed me to represent and advocate for communities I deeply care about,” Mariana states. In 2023, Mariana’s directorial skills were recognized with awards for her “Blood Ties” film at the Wolverine Con and International Student Film Festival. “Winning awards for ‘Blood Ties’ was an affirmation of my journey and passion for storytelling,” she says proudly.

As she anticipates graduating in May 2024, Mariana is eyeing prestigious universities for further studies. “I’m excited about the future. I’m focused on building a career and making a meaningful difference through my work,” she asserts. But Mariana’s journey hasn’t been just about accolades and achievements. It’s a story of personal growth and embracing her identity. Coming out as gay to her mother and embracing her sexual identity has been another significant aspect of her journey at SBVC. “Valley College helped me embrace who I am. Coming out was a big step in accepting myself and finding my voice,” Mariana confesses. Furthermore, Mariana’s involvement in community service, social justice, and leadership roles at SBVC has been instrumental in her personal and professional development. “The community service and leadership opportunities at SBVC have taught me the importance of empathy and social responsibility,” she remarks.

Mariana Lapizco’s story goes beyond cultural and linguistic barriers. It’s a narrative of turning challenges into opportunities, fear into strength, and dreams into reality. Her journey from a young girl navigating the complexities of a bicultural life to a promising filmmaker and advocate is inspiring and a beacon of hope for many first-generation children who dare to dream big.

Loma Linda University Health: New Treatment Approaches Help Patients Overcome Advanced-stage Lung Cancer

any diagnosed with advanced lung cancer faced limited options and survival up until recent years. Now, eligible patients at Loma Linda University Cancer Center can benefit from a new approach to lung cancer treatment — a combination of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and minimally invasive surgery — that has proven so effective it can even eradicate the cancer.

Tuan Khong, 61, was one such patient who responded exceptionally well to the treatment, says Salman Zaheer, MBBS, a lung cancer expert and thoracic surgeon at Loma Linda University Health. Within a year, Khong went from being diagnosed with stage III lung cancer to partnering with the Cancer Center’s care team until there was no more evidence of the disease in his body. Khong is now ending 2023 by celebrating holidays with his family and its newest member, his month-old granddaughter.

Zaheer says this treatment approach offers patients with advanced lung cancer a range of advantages. Firstly, the combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy can shrink the tumor, enabling surgeons to preserve more of the lung during surgery. Chemotherapy attacks rapidly dividing cancer cells, while immunotherapy drugs help the body's immune system fight the cancer. Additionally, he says this approach doesn’t involve radiation, thus lowering surgical risk. Not undergoing radiation upfront also means patients can always reserve that treatment option if they experience a recurrence of the cancer. Overall, this approach garners better survival outcomes, Zaheer says. Khong, for instance, experienced a complete pathological response to this treatment — meaning pathologists did not detect any cancer cells in the part of his lung or lymph nodes that were surgically removed. “Extraordinary developments in prevention, diagnosis, staging, and treatment of lung cancer have resulted in improved survival for patients with this condition,” Zaheer says.

Tuan Khong surrounded by his three children.

PHOTOS LLUH

Lung cancer care advances have enabled personalized therapy, says Zaheer, meaning care teams tailor each patient’s treatment based on their unique circum-

stances and tumor characteristics. In Khong’s case, he underwent genetic testing that revealed he could benefit from a class of immunotherapy drugs called immune checkpoint inhibitors (PD-1 inhibitors) that have helped treat many types of advanced cancer; about half of patients with non-small cell lung cancer between stages IB and stage III qualify to benefit from the chemotherapy-immunotherapy-surgery approach, Zaheer says.

Having read extensively about this new approach, Khong says he was glad to engage in shared decision-making about treatment options with his care team. The care team also brought the case to the tumor board, a multidisciplinary group of cancer experts who dedicate time to discussing patients' concerns and needs and optimizing their outcomes.

“The care team was extremely nice, professional, and wanted the best for me,” Khong says. “The way they treat you, consult with you, and advise you, it’s like your worry goes away. They took the time to make sure the kids and I understood and felt comfortable.”

Khong received chemotherapy and immunotherapy between March and May to shrink the tumor before undergoing a minimally invasive procedure to remove the upper right portion of his lung and lymph nodes. Using special techniques and instruments, Zaheer could access the lung without making large incisions and achieving the same outcomes as traditional surgical approaches. Patients who undergo the minimally invasive procedure are more likely to experience shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, less pain and bleeding after the operation, and reduced scarring. Performing such a procedure on what was initially diagnosed as stage III cancer was unheard of just a few years ago, Zaheer says. Moreover, Khong had developed heart failure and needed to work with Loma Linda University Health heart care and lung cancer care teams in tandem throughout his treatment.

“At Loma Linda University Health, we have the support structure and multidisciplinary care to be confident and comfortable in performing the procedure and providing whatever care Mr. Khong needed,” Zaheer says. Read more at IECN.com.

Inland SoCal Housing Collective Awarded Fellowship to Expand Inland Empire Banking Access

Community News

illions of Americans across the country are outside of the stabilizing financial mainstream, without a safe banking account to manage their money and build towards a stronger financial future. Across the country, Bank On coalitions work to connect residents to safe, affordable accounts – and Bank On Inland SoCal just received a new grant to supercharge these efforts.

Inland SoCal Housing Collective and national nonprofit the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund (CFEFund) announced Jay Miller as the Inland SoCal’s Bank On Fellow for a two-year term to advance banking access efforts at scale, including through identifying opportunities to connect access to safe accounts to programs and payments. Inland SoCal is one of six Bank On coalitions across the country whose work will be supported by

this cohort of the Bank On Fellows initiative. The goal of the national Bank On movement is to ensure that everyone has access to safe and affordable financial products and services.

Now in its fourth Wells Fargo Foundation-supported cohort, the national Bank On Fellowship Program provides funding to six Bank On coalitions to support a full-time staff position for two years — a “Fellow” — to lead coalition activities. Launched in 2017 with generous support from the Wells Fargo Foundation, it is the first national initiative focused on building experienced banking access leaders across the country, equipping them with the training, tools, and resources to make significant advancements in local banking access efforts while at the same time generating best practices for other coalitions. Dedicated

local leadership is critical to moving beyond general education and literacy efforts and instead into identifying systemic integration points – from unemployment insurance to tax refunds to other program and payment streams – to connect unbanked people to safe, affordable accounts at scale. “The Inland SoCal Housing Collective builds their regional strategies for safe, decent and affordable housing within four pillars.” said Melanie Steele, Executive Director. “The Wealth Building and Preservation Pillar, focused on financial education and tools to build and preserve generational wealth, will support the Bank On coalition amplifying the safe bank accounts and leverage their collective partners to deepen the impact for financially stable individuals

and families.” The CFE Fund leads the national Bank On movement, supporting local coalitions working to connect individuals and families to the financial mainstream through partnerships between local governments, financial institutions, and community organizations.

The Bank On National Account Standards define characteristics of a safe, affordable, and fully functional consumer account; accounts certified as meeting Bank On Standards are available at over 400 banks and credit unions across the country in over 46,000 branches, comprising 60% of the U.S. deposit market share. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 833-561-0243 for information regarding the trustee's sale or visit this Internet Web site WWW.SALES.BDFGROUP.CO M for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 00000009687799. ep. Pete Aguilar announced that the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District (SBCFPD) will be receiving $1,026,852.17 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program.

This funding will be used to provide training to promote Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) to Paramedics, creating more career opportunities for first responders in the SBCFPD. This new funding will also start a Wellness and Fitness Assessment program to help the SBCFPD provide annual health exams for firefighters, who are at higher risk of contracting cardiovascular diseases due to the nature of their employment.

“The courageous firefighters in San Bernardino County risk their lives every day to keep our community safe. We owe it to them to ensure they are receiving the highest quality of health care and other benefits,” said Rep. Aguilar. “I’m glad this funding will help the County provide necessary examinations so that any illness or injuries can be addressed

quickly and effectively.” “The health and wellness of our firefighters is constantly at risk. Modern synthetic building materials and unfamiliar gases from electronic components and batteries have amplified concerns about cancer. Firefighters face a significant risk of cardiovascular disease and psychological stress due to frequent exposure to traumatic events, sleep disruptions, and injuries. The significance of this grant is profoundly important to addressing these threats to our firefighter’s well-being. Securing this grant enables us to offer thorough annual examinations aimed at identifying and addressing treatable injuries and illnesses at their earliest stages, where intervention is most beneficial,” said Dan Munsey, Chief of the San Bernardino County Fire Station.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program provides federal funding to help local fire departments train emergency personnel, improve the health and safety of firefighters and ensure that communities are resilient to fire. Read more IECN.com.

The BallotMobile will help us travel to even the farthest corners of our county to share this important information.”

The BallotMobile will deliver a two- to three-hour pop-up experience at local events and well-known locations throughout the county. Residents will receive voter education materials, resources, and giveaways, and take advantage of an Instagram-worthy backdrop for photo opportunities.

“For the 2024 Presidential Primary Election, we’re excited to visit all 24 cities and unincorporated communities in the county, meet with community members and give them the tools they need to be an informed voter,” Shea said. “The BallotMobile will go a long way in ensuring that every voter’s voice can be heard on Election Day.”
