he race for the Colton Joint Unified School District Area 1 between incumbent Randall Ceniceros and Bloomington resident Israel Fuentes was a close one; Ceniceros was the apparent winner until the end of November when numbers shifted in favor of Fuentes as absentee and mail-in ballots were tallied. Fuentes won by 239 votes.

Fuentes, who has two daughters in CJUSD and has been a volunteer for the last decade, noted the impetus for running for school board was his commitment to students and to offer a different perspective.

“I was nervous, but I just left it in God’s hands,” Fuentes shared. “It’s a great blessing to be a part of this school board, it’s a great opportunity for me and I’m just very excited.” Ceniceros reflected on his eight years on the board, citing pride in district improvements that include increased graduation rates, reduced suspensions and expulsions, attendance recovery, energy efficiency, community outreach and academic improvements. “I applaud our resilient staff and educators for their contributions

“I’m looking forward to working as a team, and bringing items to the table as a parent and volunteer.”

ighlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital was named a Top Children’s Hospital for the second year in a row, and Loma Linda University Medical Center – East Campus received its inaugural recognition as a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization. Announced yesterday, the Leapfrog Top Hospital awards are widely acknowledged as one of the most

competitive honors American hospitals can receive. Scott Perryman, senior vice president/administrator for LLU Children’s Hospital, said it is a privilege to have received this award. “This designation as a Top Children’s Hospital highlights our consistent commitment to patient safety and quality,” Perryman said. “The patient families we serve invest a tremendous amount of trust in the care we provide, and we feel privileged to have re-

ceived this award. This recognition would not be possible without our committed clinical team of pediatricians, surgeons, sub-specialists, nurses and child life specialists for all they do to keep the mothers and children of the Inland Empire healing, healthy and happy.” Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, maternity care and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medica-

nicians,” Jean-Marie said. “It is the goal of our faculty to instill excellence, integrity and compassion to the residents and fellows who come to us for their training.” To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must submit a Leapfrog Hospital Survey and achieve highest performance in its category. The selection of Top Hospitals 2018 is based on surveys from nearly 1,900 hospitals. Bush Decency and America's Christmas List By Glenn Mollette Christmas is coming and wish lists vary. Here are ideas from which most can benefit. Medical care for all Americans. Congress must sever ties with lobbyists working on behalf of the pharmaceutical and medical insurance companies and represent the American people. Prescription costs are too high and the government pays too much money to the drug companies for those who receive various medicines from government coverage. All Americans should be able to see a doctor and receive medical care. Working Americans should have access to affordable medical care. Retired and poor/disabled/uninsurable Americans should have access to Medicare and Medicaid. All Veterans and military should be able to choose an alternate doctor or hospital when the VA hospital and doctors are not in close proximity or are inaccessible.

dle East on rural America. Roads, bridges, parks and investing in small companies that will locate in rural America must be a government priority. We've spent too many years nation-building throughout the planet and let Appalachia and other rural communities drown. I don't have enough space so here are musts for Americans this Christmas: Small interest loans so our youth can afford to go to college. Make college as affordable as possible. Turn Social Security around and keep our promised retirements solvent for our graying Americans. Reward the corporations who stay in America and let those who want to be out of America pay the price for abandoning us.

Keep America safe with strong borders and a strong military and take care of those who do and have served our country. Insure that sane Americans can have their Colt 45 revolvers by their bedside tables when they turn out the lights and say their prayers. Finally, may we all be a little more like President George H.W. Bush who wrote newly elected President Bill Clinton a very gracious note welcoming him to the oval office and assuring him of his support saying "...that you will be 'our' President when you read this note." He led by living the example that it doesn't hurt any of us to be respectful, gracious, decent people who help, love and encourage others. May all Americans have a Merry Christmas!

Dealing with Loneliness

My medical insurance company recently informed me that my doctors must always gain their consent when prescribing any kind of medicine. They not only demand final approval on any medications I might need, they frequently dictate that my doctor prescribes a medication that is less expensive. I would like to think that my doctor prescribes medicines based on his opinion that they will work. If I decide to follow my doctor's direction and the medical insurance company doesn't agree then I will be totally out of pocket for my prescription.

Global health service company Cigna (NYSE: CI) released results from a national survey earlier this month exploring the impact of loneliness in the United States. The survey, conducted in partnership with market research firm, Ipsos, revealed that most American adults are considered lonely. Nearly half of Americans report sometimes or always feeling alone (46 percent) or left out (47 percent).

Generation Z (adults ages 18-22) is the loneliest generation and claims to be in worse health than older generations.

My wife and I were in France once and she had to see a doctor. There were doctor offices everywhere in Paris. Seeing a doctor and getting two prescriptions were less than $35. We didn't use an insurance card and a visit to the doctor and going to the pharmacy around the corner both took less than 90 minutes. France does not have socialized medicine. They are involved in controlling the costs of drugs. The life expectancy for those living in France is longer than us living in America. France's medical world is not perfect but we should take notes.

From the Cigna report we learn the following: One in four Americans (27 percent) rarely or never feel as though there are people who really understand them. Two in five Americans sometimes or always feel that their relationships are not meaningful (43 percent) and that they are isolated from others (43 percent). One in five people report they rarely or never feel close to people (20 percent) or feel like there are people they can talk to (18 percent).

Psychcentral.com has some good suggestions on combating loneliness. Loneliness is a feeling and not a fact. Reach out to others. Stop the self-deflating thoughts. Focus on others and less attention on yourself. What you give may come back to you. Find others who have common interests. Always show up when meeting with others. Don't stand people up. Be interested in other people. Listen to what they are saying and doing. Take the focus off of you. Be kind. Some people are rude but most people will respond to kindness. Being mean, rude and a jerk will earn you a reputation you don't want. Find a group with whom to connect such as church groups, exercise groups, music groups, Alcoholics Anonymous, sewing or baking groups or folks who simply gather for coffee.

Christmas will be good if Americans can have access to jobs across the country. Big cities are booming with jobs it seems but rural America does not have the same options. I suppose it will always be this way but everyone cannot live in Provo, Utah, Austin, Texas or Nashville, Tennessee. A friend of mine recently moved to Indianapolis and has job opportunities galore. The federal government must spend some of the money we give away to the Mid-

Americans who live with others are less likely to be lonely (average loneliness score of 43.5) compared to those who live alone (46.4). However, this does not apply to single parents/guardians (average loneliness score of 48.2) - even though they live with children, they are more likely to be lonely. Only around half of Americans (53 percent) have meaningful inperson social interactions, such as having an extended conversation with a friend or spending quality

time with family, on a daily basis.

Social media use alone is not a predictor of loneliness; respondents defined as very heavy users of social media have a loneliness score (43.5) that is not markedly different from the score of those who never use social media (41.7).

Talking, listening, kindness, showing interest in others, participating and helping others will help you in overcoming loneliness. Dr. Glenn Mollette is the author of 12 books. His syndicated column is read in all 50 states.

The economy is always in a state of flux. Since Tourism is the number one source of income it was and is erratic. Since Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco and Cabo are the main tourist sights, they are also subject to inclement weather and storms.

G. W. Abersold, Ph.D. This article is about Mexico. It is a compilation of my views and opinions of Mexico. My qualifications are primarily based on fifty plus visits to Mexico, lecturing on several cruise ships about the history of Mexico. Also having studied Spanish for many years and having many friends here and in Mexico. Mexico is the 14th largest country in the world and has a population of 135,000,000 people with 50% of them under 30 years of age. It has ten times the amount of beaches than the U.S.; hundreds of miles of deserts, very high mountains, the largest populated city-Mexico City, and countless number of ancient ruins. Octavio Paz, Mexico’s most famous author has said “Mexico has two major problems, it is too close to the United States, and too far from God.” Most historians would agree. There are many problems within Mexico’s borders. Poverty is a constant companion for millions of its people. Education is diluted with ignorance. Longevity is limited because of meager health care. Jobs are realized only by a few. Joblessness is prominent. Volcanic eruptions and violent earthquakes are common causing hundreds of deaths. These are sup-

The Central Bank of Mexico states that in 2017, Mexico received 26.1 billion dollars from legal and illegal immigrants in the United States. This amount is expected to be more for 2018.

with 185,400 Mayans. It is San Cristobal de las Casas. Every Mayan house in the city has a cross over the doors. Though not a Christian cross. It is in the form of a plus sign, with a circle at the end of each line.

There are a number of places and events that are a part of Mexico’s culture and, I’ve seen them all. For example: The Copper Canyon (Barranca de cobra) is deeper and longer than the Grand Canyon; Mexacal is 60 % Chinese population with scores of Chinese food restaurants.

The Metro in Mexico City is a phenomenal achievement. Twelve lines. Supposedly it was designed by the Swiss, built by the Germans, financed by the Japanese and maintained by the Mexicans. Remember, the City was built on a lake.

Garibaldi Plaza? Strolling mariachis play and sing all night long. Murals are a must in Mexico. The leading artists were Rivera, Segurotos and Orozco. Their paintings are mostly political and are found in many churches and government buildings. My favorite is Orozco. The world-famous Folklorico Ballet.

Every stop on the routes is a museum. I kid you not. On one of my visits, I stopped at every one and marveled at the museum’s artifacts.

Jai alai and bull fighting, soccer and baseball are the major sports. Chapultepec is a great museum depicting the history, both ancient and current.

There are also seven recognized museums in Mexico. To me, the Metro should be number eight.

Very few Mexicans know of the Chsicebul town in the Yucatan. Sixty Five million years ago an asteroid landed there and it went twelve miles deep and 120 miles wide. The sun was blotted out for a million years. Almost all life throughout the world was destroyed, including most dinosaurs. Several Mexican scientists have recently verified what many worldwide scientists have said for years.

The ruins in Mexico surpass any others in the world. While many of the Aztec constructions were destroyed be Cortez, the two pyramids at Teotihuacan remain to this day. The Pyramid de Sol (sun) and the Pyramid de la Luna (moon) are as firm as when they were built. The most famous Mayan ruins are Chechen Itza, Palenque, Calakmul, Tulum Monte Alban, and Coba. They are all well worth visiting. The Mayans are still a part of the Mexican culture. For instance, in the State of Chiapas, there is a city about 11,000 feet in the mountains

In recent years NAFTA has been a great asset to Mexico’s economy. More than 50,000 companies have either moved all or part of their assets to Mexico. Companies such as: General Electric, 3 M, Honeywell, Exxon, Mobil, FedEx, Delta, J P Morgan, Ama-

zon, Home Depot, McDonalds, Starbuck, Ford, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Walmart, DOW, Dupont, Apple, Microsoft, Google, AT&T. Obviously this is just a pittance of thousands.

A major benefit are the jobs provided for the maquiladoras. Men and women. Estimates are as high as 3 million. The jobs are both menial and skilled. NAFTA was begun under the Presidency of Bill Clinton and the recent revision is credited to President Trump, Fox and Lopez. The basic liabilities in Mexico are extremely serious. Education is extremely limited throughout the country as well as health care. Jobs are still needed in spite of NAFTA. Infrastructure is worse than in the U.S. which says a lot. My personal concern is about religion. I’ve attended many churches in Mexico and usually there is only a handful if worshipers. Except for funerals, weddings and baptisms. While Catholicism is the dominant faith, there is a large response to Pentecostalism, Seventh Day Adventist, Jehovah Witness and Mormons. This is also relevant for the Central American Countries. It is impossible to define the status and problems of the seven basic countries that make up Central America; without considering the New Spain. New Spain was the territory that was invaded, dominated and controlled; the new world after the Aztecs were defeated. The major

viceroy was the representative of the King of Spain. His title was VICEROYALTY.

King Charles V was the ruler of Spain when the New Spain was established in 1535 A.D. The territory included most of the Western U.S.A. and went South to Venezuela. It lasted until 1821-286 years. The King’s representation in Mexico City was called Viceroyalty. This title meant his job was similar to our Vice President. He filled in for the King. The Spanish military was the authority. Within a short time many of the female Mexican Natives were victims of venereal disease and infectious deceases. Among them, Smallpox. The settlers were military. No women from Spain were involved. Within a short time pregnancies with indigenes natives was rampant. Between 1535 and 1600, the native population was depleted from 25 million to 1 million. The affect is still realized today. The population in Mexico is 60 % Mestizos; mixed blood. 30% pure Natives and 10 % American, Lebanese and other Europeans. The New Spain territory remained under the name until the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Spanish influence is still strong in Mexico and all of the seven Central American; language, culture, dress, food, actions and religion. Amen. Selah. So be it.

Cajon High School, champions of the 37th annual San Bernardino County Mock Trial competition. ajon made history, becoming just the eighth high school from San Bernardino County to win a Mock Trial championship, edging twotime defending champion Redlands (Blue) in the finals on Dec. 8. Cajon, which had been one of the county powers since 2010, had twice lost to Redlands schools in the finals in 2016 and 2010 and made two other semifinal appearances in 2012 and '13 before claiming its first-ever crown this year.

“This victory has been years in the making. It’s exciting to see hard work and perseverance pay off,” remarked Cajon Principal Teenya Bishop. “Cajon students and coaches worked tirelessly to prepare for this win. The entire Cajon community is proud of our team and their great accomplishment.” Redlands was seeking its record 16th title in the 37th annual competition with the finals being held at the Foothill Law and Justice Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Cajon and Redlands played two sessions in the Mock Trial finals, switching between playing roles as both prosecutors and defendants. Approximately 420 students representing 32 high school teams have participated in the Mock Trial competition this year. This event is co-sponsored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office.

he NBA season is in full swing and all eyes have been on the Lakers and LeBron James, and they’ve met and exceeded many expectations. The Lakers are 16-10 as of December 9th and are seeded 5th, and are 1.5 games back of first place in the tightly packed Western Conference, with that being said let’s reflect on how they got here. The Lakers came out of the gates the way that had years before, 03. However, they’ve turned it around for a few reasons. First off, Lonzo Ball. After a disappointing rookie year, Lonzo has found his rhythm. His fast pace of play and obvious chemistry has been key to the Lakers season, so you could say for once, Lavar Ball was right about Zo and the King.

Speaking of the King, he’s being his usual self. He’s come up clutch countless times already this season and is top 5 in scoring, and should continue that the rest of the way. But what really completes this Lakers team is the role players. Guys like Josh Hart, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Lance Stephenson have all helped the team. Not to mention the two biggest X factors (literally) Javale McGee and Tyson Chandler who have been owning the paint this season and are playing the best ball of their careers. Overall, this Laker team has the look that they could be something special. Many believe they can’t compete with the most dominant teams, but when you have LeBron James as your star and the basketball minded Magic Johnson as your GM, anything is possible.

This number does not account for those who are also underinsured.” “Last year, the clinic we hosted serviced approximately 700 people. general medical, dental, and vision services, but they also included mental health resources, nutrition education, free food, and a variety of different resource booths who shared information about their social service agencies and companies. Incentives were given to attendees who would go around to the different booths asking about the services they offered in hopes that they would benefit from them,” Reyes said. The medical clinic partners have found that the impact of this event has been substantial to the region. “These services have shown a ripple effect in our region. First, it impacted those who received the direct services. There were people who attended who solely rely on this health clinic to receive their medical check-ups for the year,” said Reyes. “In addition, this clinic helps alleviate emergency room usage by addressing medical issues before reaching severe needs. Lastly, this event also impacted the countless volunteers that worked tirelessly to coordinate and promote this event. The feeling of positively impacting someone’s life is truly inspiring. I commend those who worked so hard to make this year’s Amen Clinic a success,” continued Reyes. Reyes’ office was flooded with

phone calls once the clinic began its promotion cycle and callers were shocked when they were told that all services were free of charge. “Once we started promoting this event through our networks and social media, our district office was flooded with calls. Everyday people would call our office asking if there was a charge, if they needed to show identification, or if they could only get one service of the three that were offered,” Reyes said. “When they heard that it was open to everyone, free of charge, and that they could receive all of the services offered, the response was unbelievable. It was as if it was too good to be true. It was wonderful to see the happy faces of those who had just received services after years of not receiving medical treatment,” she said. Good news…the Amen Medical Clinic is going to be held annually. “One of the most wonderful things about this event was that we saw people attend from all walks of life and absolutely no documentation was required,” shared Reyes. “We had people call our office to share that they had medical insurance through their work but it did not cover dental or vision. Everyone was welcomed and no one was turned away. This

sored by donations from local residents and businesses. This event would not have been possible without their generous donations. And lastly, Dr. Ang Yen who is the lead coordinator for this event. It was her vision to bring this clinic to the community last year and she deserves all the recognition for turning her vision into reality,” concluded Reyes.

CHC Paramedic Class 90 graduated on Friday, Dec. 7 in the Performing Arts Center. edicated, smart, supportive, compassionate and hard-working are adjectives Kathryn Crow used to describe Crafton Hills College’s most recent class of paramedics.

Composed of 20 graduates, CHC’s 90th Paramedic Class was honored in the college’s Performing Arts Center (PAC) on Friday, Dec. 7, with Crow delivering remarks capturing the group’s personality. “Each of them possessed different strengths,” said the director of paramedic education during the ceremony. “Some were quiet while some were outspoken. Some were happy to take on new leadership while others preferred to avoid the spotlight. “But as the program progressed and became more difficult, they each discovered they possessed the opposite characteristics as well. All of this led to their ability as a group to support each other through the process,” she said. Crafton’s paramedic program is made up of three parts known as didactic – a section composed of

lectures, interactive presentations, behind. labs and simulations – clinical training, and a field internship to “As they have proven time and expose trainees to hands-on, real- time again, this group of young world experiences in the industry. men can do that,” Crow continued. “As the industry shifts from The paramedics program is of- one where showing emotion is fered twice a year in the fall and often viewed as a weakness to one spring semesters, with students spending hundreds of hours inand-out of the classroom to complete coursework requirements. And although each paramedic class is different, it is Crow’s hope each group puts what they learned to good use in not only their desired career field, but their personal lives as well.

Circling back to those descriptive adjectives, Crow said they all will be “important attributes” for each grad to keep in mind as they move forward to making their goals a reality. “They will need to learn to reconcile the worst they see in humanity while also feeling blessed by the inherent good in people,” she said “They will need to balance being an employee with being a spouse or parent.
