The successful movement was made possible through a partnership between the Esperanza Project, STARS Behavioral Health Group, Representative Curt Lewis who was present on behalf of Congressman Pete Aguilar and Representative Esmeralda Vasquez who attended on behalf of Assemblywoman Eloise Gómez Reyes.

“We coordinated the Holiday Party for Displaced Children of San Bernardino and the children got to choose two toys, eat a meal…including desert and danced the evening away,” said Connie Rosales, founder of the Esperanza Project. “We were fortunate to collect a total of 470 toys and items such as curling irons, hair dryers and personal kits with make up, for our older teenagers. The toys and items were also given out to Loma Linda University Health (SACHS) Clinic who service low income families including the homeless,” continued Rosales.

“Through this effort partnerships were created with STARS Behavioral Health Group who we have been collaborating with for the past four years, who service these children,” Rosales said. She expressed how important partnerships are in the community, because when everyone comes together as one, more can be accomplished.

“We had a total of 140 people attend, about 90 of them were children. We had plenty of volunteers including student volunteers,” Rosales noted. Rosales spoke highly of eight-

Maryjoy Duncan Managing Editor

As I sit here writing this column all the errands that I still have to complete are buzzing around in my head and I slowly start to feel overwhelmed. There are gifts that still need to be purchased, holiday cards to be mailed which I still haven’t received from Shutterfly! - Christmas dinner menu to plan and the inevitable trip to an overcrowded grocery store. The holiday season seems to cause a flurry of stress as we get wrapped up in the holiday hoopla, setting high expectations in order to make things perfect for our family and friends. There are moments that I remind myself that the holiday season isn’t about the gifts and the running around, but about being with family, and I’m able to pause and take in a few deep breaths, but once the mind starts racing again, that very fleeting moment of calm quickly dissipates. I researched some tips and found some by Dr. Alok Trivedi, a psychological performance coach at The Aligned Performance Institute. I hope you find them helpful, as for myself, I will breathe easier come Dec. 24. Stop trying to please your family Learn to say “no” to your family sometimes, otherwise the holiday season will be a very stressful time for you. And while quality time is nice, allocate your time accordingly, and don’t over-commit. Stop painting the holiday fantasy Know that the stereotypical holiday fantasy is just that — a fantasy. So if you’re unrealistic in your expectations, you will only be let down. “Ask yourself, what’s the benefit of the holidays for you? What’s the worst that could happen if it doesn’t work out for you?” Let the reality of our holidays unfold realistically, he adds. Trying to make a fantasy into reality will only lead to disappointment. Stop being a perfectionist

Don’t try to control situations that you cannot control because it will only leave you frustrated. Stop eating to excess It’s so easy to want to indulge in hot eats and treats over the holidays, but try not to overdo it. “This is big — more than people realize,” he says. “What people do is they want to give themselves freedom to indulge, but what that does is it creates more stress in your body which then doesn’t help you handle the psychological stress on a day-to-day basis.” Stop trying to make everyone happy It is impossible to make everyone happy, and this is especially true around the holidays. No, you won’t be able to make every dinner party, but that’s OK. He says people may initially seem disappointed, but when you set your boundaries, people respect you for it. Stop expecting big gifts There’s no need to dazzle your friends and family with big, flashy gifts. On top of that, don’t expect big gifts either. Instead, expect nothing, and if something is gifted to you, be grateful. Make sure to follow up with a genuine “thank you” whether in person or in a note to show your appreciation. Stop buying on credit You may feel the itch to buy a lot of gifts for everyone, but make sure that if you do you, stick within your budget. Stop determining worth on things “Don’t try to determine the value of the gifts you received but instead value the time you have with your family and friends,” Trivedi says. “Enjoy the actual company rather than the expectation of the result.” Stop prioritizing others over yourself Make time for yourself. Even though the holidays are when many spend time together with loved ones, you have to make sure you practice self-care. Maybe enjoy some alone time. Take that extra time off, treat yourself to some time to do nothing. And don’t be afraid to cancel some plans if you feel overwhelmed because it may be the best thing for you in the long run. Stop planning everything Lastly, know when to call it quits on planning. Trying to control every minute leads to underlying stress you might not even realize, enjoy the present time. Being present for the holidays is the most enjoyable thing you can do - you never know what unexpected excitement and surprises might be around the corner.

W hy we need Christmas

Merchants around the world depend on the Christmas season each year for twenty to fifty percent of their yearly sales. The travel industry from airlines to gasoline stations see a nice bump during the holidays. People are going to buy airplane tickets and buy gasoline. Grocery stores do better during the holidays. People cook more for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. The alcohol industry does well during holidays. Wine, Beer and Bourbon Whiskey all do well normally and more so during December.

Charities and Churches enjoy December. People give more money to the church in December than any other month. People who want to give make sure their gifts are given by December 31st. Churches normally have special children and music programs during the month that increases attendance. Counselors see a spike in activity during December. More people are depressed during the Christmas and New Year's Eve holidays than any other time of the year. Funeral homes are busy in December and January. Check your

local funeral home obituaries for last December and January and you'll be amazed at how many funerals took place.

Fitness centers and gyms across the country prepare for their biggest month of the year which is January. Millions of people will drag into their local fitness center and sign up for a twelve-month membership. About fifty percent of these people or less will only use their memberships a few times during the year but will be stuck in 12 month contracts. Christmas is a profitable time for many it seems. The greater value of this wonderful season comes with the opportunities of Christmas. You have a good excuse to call or visit people. Christmas is about personal relationships and connecting to real people. The Christmas story is about a personal God who came as a real person to help real people with real needs. Christmas is family time. Don't exclude anybody. God is inclusive. He came to love all the people of the world. There are always people who feel excluded, unloved and seem to be the rag muffin person in the family. No one is perfect. Everyone has failed in different ways. Christmas is a different day. Stores, most restaurants, workplaces and businesses are closed on Christmas. What are you going to do? Be happy, reflect, give thanks and don't feel sorry for yourself. Take time to focus on the one that so many Christmas songs have been written about, "Christ, The Savior is born." We need Christmas because we need The Savior of Christmas. We need peace on earth and good will to men. We need a Silent Night and a holy night. We need the Joy to the World as sung in the famed Christmas Carol. We need to know the grave is not the end. We need to have the hope of eternal life. We need help to deal with our grief and strength to face tomorrow. Jesus came to give us this and more. That's why we need him and the message of Christmas so desperately in our lives.

ecember is the traditional month of the year to celebrate Christmas. The name stands for “Christ’s Mass,” which is a Roman Catholic term. The pressing question remains. Why is Christmas celebrated on December 25? The word “syncretism” is a theological term. Basically, it refers to the thoughts and practices that were taken from pagan or Jewish religions and incorporated into Christianity. During the first 300 years following the life of Jesus, there were three other religions opting with Christianity for dominance. Judaism, Emperor Worship and Mithraism. Several practices were adopted from each of them into Christianity. Syncretism. The term Mithraism comes from its “god,” Mithra. One of the tenets of Mithraism was that Mithra was born on December 25. For several reasons it is unlikely that Jesus was born on December 25. I’ve been in Bethlehem in De-

cember. Its altitude is compatible to Running Springs. It was cold, rainy and sleeting snow. Shepherds would not have had their sheep outside in that weather.

sing “lustily.” Charles wrote the famous carol, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing;” even though there was great controversy with George Whitefield.

Neither would a taxing be set in a cold season. It more likely would have been set in the Spring. The influence of Mithraism should be considered.

“Silent Night, Holy Night” was composed in 1817 by Joseph Mohr, a priest in Oberndorf, Austria, and the organist of his church, Franz Gruber. It has been recorded more than any other song in history.

Josephus was a Jewish historian. He records the death of Herod the Great as being on March 13, 4 BCE (Before the Christian Era.) The same Herod that was killing all the babies under two years of age. He was out to kill Jesus. This means that Jesus was born around 4 BCE. The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336 AD, during the reign of Emperor Constantine. “A few years later, in 350 AD Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on the 25th of December.” The tradition of giving gifts has two origins. The Roman Festival of Saturnalia (between December 17 and 23rd) to honor the Roman god Saturn. Syncretism. The other tradition is about St. Nicholas of Turkey. As Bishop he would distribute gifts to children on Christmas Eve. January 6 is called Epiphany. It commemorates the arrival of the Wisemen. According to the Bible they arrived at the “house”, differ-

ent from the stable. Christmas trees are a huge tradition. They originated in northern Europe, primarily in Germany. The Christmas tree was brought to England by Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert from his native Germany. The “tree” was brought to America around 1848. The idea of Christmas cards began in England. Sir Henry Cole is credited with creating the first real Christmas card. The story goes, he was curator of the Victoria and Albert museum and was too busy to send Christmas greetings. He, therefore, commissioned John Calcott Horsley to design a card with the greeting, “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.” Other traditions about Christmas are: Christmas Stockings, Mistletoes, Holly and Ivy, Poinsettias, Candy Canes, Hanukkah, Kwanzas, Egg-nog, etc.

However, probably the most popular of all Christmas traditions is the singing of Christmas Carols. Where and when did they all begin? The very first recorded songs with a Christmas meaning was in the second century in Rome. They were all in Latin with the message being stilted and propaganda. In the ninth and tenth centuries, songs of rhyming verses became popular. Primarily because of Milanese Bishop St. Ambrose. Enter St. Francis of Assisi. He abandoned Latin, used theatrics and songs were sung in the audience’s native language. Martin Luther really gave Christmas carols a push. Tradition says he composed “Away in a Manger.” Then, the Puritans banned the singing of Christmas Carols. Too worldly. Public singing really got a push during John and Charles Wesley’s establishment of the Methodist Church. He urged the people to

Phillip Brooks, an Anglican Priest, wrote the words and Lewis Redner composed the music, to “O Little Town of Bethlehem” in 1868. Brooks was inspired after visiting Bethlehem and viewing it from Jerusalem- 7 miles away. It is the easiest carol to sing and the only popular carol native to America, beside “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear”—1849. Secular Christmas music has had its birth in the USA. “Jingle Bells,” “I Wish You a Merry Christmas, “Silver Bells,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer,” “I Saw Mommy Kissin’ Santa Claus”, “Deck the Halls,” among many others. And, of course the most popular, “White Christmas.” It was composed by Irving Berlin and made famous by Bing Crosby. Bing sang it for the first time on December 25, 1941. Stella and I wish all of you a very, Merry Christmas. Amen. Selah. So be it.
