n a forward-looking initiative aimed at freshening up the city’s culinary landscape and catering to the flourishing downtown workforce, the City of San Bernardino has declared the commencement of a certified farmers market, starting Tuesday, October 17, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Court Street Square.

Parks and Recreation Director Lydie Gutfeld, who oversees the department organizing the market, shared her enthusiasm about the new offering, saying,

San Bernardino’s Route 66 Elevates Local Car Scene and Community Engagement on October 7

“Bringing locally grown fruits and vegetables to our residents and employees every Tuesday is an exciting addition to Downtown San Bernardino.”

The Downtown San Bernardino Farmers Market, destined to be a recurrent event, will feature over 20 diverse vendors, each offering a luscious array of fresh, locally sourced produce alongside hot prepared food – a less common sight at typical farmers markets, yet one aligned with the city’s innovative approach towards wellness and community.

After anticipating a positive reception, Gutfeld said, “This will be a great option for the people that work downtown. People can walk over and grab something delicious for lunch or stock up on healthy foods for home.”

Councilmember Ben Reynoso addressed this initiative’s citizen-driven momentum: “Tons of people have been asking the city about hosting a farmers market. They’ve been held at CSUSB, but there has not been one downtown for many years.” Farmers Market cont. on next pg.

fter over a decade of traversing the global stage, the Grammywinning Avila Brothers are set to serenade their hometown with a pulsating live concert at Yaamava’s The Tukut Lounge on November 11th, at 9 PM.

From writing chart-toppers for Usher to fostering budding artists, IZ and Bobby Ross Avila fuse their global acumen with local roots in a much-anticipated homecoming gig, offering an intimate yet electrifying night for music enthusiasts.

IZ Avila noted, “It has been a while since we played in our hometown. It will be a night of music with friends and family and

all about having a good time. This show has been a long time coming, and Bobby and I are excited to play for those who could not make it out to the Las Vegas residency we did with Usher.”

The brothers, IZ and Bobby Ross Avila, renowned for producing Usher’s 2004 chart-dominating “Confessions” album and touring with him since 2009, are no strangers to the spotlight yet maintain a humble affinity for their origins. Their last performance at Yaamava was back in 2009 (when it was a ballroom and known as San Manuel Casino), alongside Usher, and the brothers were invited to play as Usher stated, “The show is in your backyard.” The upcoming concert promises a

mélange of beats and melodies, featuring hits from their self-released album, “The Mood Soundsational.” One highlight will surely be “I Want You,” a classic driven by an infectious bassline and beloved from California to New York. A sneak peek into the night reveals an eclectic set list, intertwining hits and hidden gems from their extensive catalog, punctuated by a few surprise guests expressing gratitude for the brothers’ influence and support over the years.

“We’re going to play a lot of records from our self-released album and mix it up with a couple of hits throughout the night that we produced. We’re going to have a Avila Bros cont. on next pg.

Farmers Market

Reynoso revealed the Tuesday morning slot is a compromise and experimental pilot, with sights set on potentially shifting the market to the weekend in the future.

With San Bernardino historically falling into the category of a food desert, this initiative indicates a firm step towards rekindling the city’s food scene.

“To be honest, San Bernardino has been a food desert historically, and we’re bringing better restaurants and fresh produce from locally sourced farms to the heart of the city. This is us being proactive and answering the calls for better food options,” Reynoso said. Avila Bros

couple of special guests come out and thank people who’ve supported us through the years,” IZ elucidates.

The Avila Brothers are also seizing this occasion to spotlight two emerging artists they’ve been meticulously developing: MKY, a young Latino artist blending pop/soul with Chicano music influences, and Andre, a Filipino artist likened to an intimate, acoustic guitar-driven Daniel Caesar. IZ shares, “We’re going to be introducing two artists on stage that we’ve been working with MKY and Andre - to showcase them and let the people see the artists we’re developing.”

Adept at stitching together cohesive shows, as evidenced by their history with Usher, the brothers emphasize a performance that promises a journey through musicality and musicianship, carefully curated to enrapture audiences and transport them through varied emotions and energies.

Enthusiasm permeates IZ’s voice as he mentions, “I’m looking forward to playing ‘I Want You’ and many hits we’ve written, like ‘Bad Girl’ by Usher and ‘Point of It All’ by Anthony Hamilton.”

The program is a testament to administrative efficacy and a responsive move to the palpable demand for more varied and wholesome food options in the city. Reynoso extended his gratitude towards Gutfeld and her team, saying, “I’d like to thank Lydia and the Parks and Recreation Department and city staff for streamlining an event like this. Historically, we haven’t had much response for residents’ ideas and requests like this, and our city is delivering.” As a pivotal initiative to alter the dietary and culinary experience within the city, the Downtown San Bernardino Farmers Market is both a response to public demand and a forward-thinking step in transforming the locale into a hub of wholesome, accessible, and delectable food options.

Notably, their musical journey does not pause here. The Avila Brothers will again unite with Usher as the creative directors for his halftime show at the Apple Music Super Bowl in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium on February 11th, 2024, further illustrating their pivotal role in sculpting significant musical experiences in the industry.

In reflecting on their trajectory from the streets of Rialto to international stardom, the brothers never lose sight of their beginnings, constantly weaving their success back into the fabric of their local community and aspiring to uplift the talent within the Inland Empire region. The duo, who began their musical journey under their father’s guidance before they were teenagers, attribute their success to mentorship, influence, hard work, resilience, and an unwavering love for music.

Clearly, this upcoming concert is more than a performance; it’s a heartfelt return, a celebration of roots, and a testament to the enduring bond of music, community, and familial ties that have anchored the Avila Brothers through their soaring career.

Governor Signs Ramos Bill Creating Path for Inland Empire to Create Additional Services at Patton State Hospital

nused facilities at Patton State Hospital can be leased to a nonprofit corporation or local government to provide mental health and homeless services following the governor’s approval of AB 349 which takes effect in January. Assemblymember James C. Ramos (D-San Bernardino) introduced the measure.

Ramos stated, “I am gratified that the governor approved my bill which provides an opportunity to create a vitally needed new regional resource to address the needs of our homeless. Addressing this need demands collaboration. No one level of government or organization can solve the issue alone.” He noted that earlier this year, the San Bernardino City Council followed Los Angeles and Long Beach in officially declaring

homelessness an emergency in their city. Council members noted that the city had seen a 175% increase in homelessness over the past five years.

City of San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran said, “With the signing of AB 349, the City of San Bernardino and our neighboring cities now have a solution we can pursue to assist homeless individuals in need of mental health treatment. This has been one of the biggest challenges to addressing our homeless population, and we are grateful to Assemblymember Ramos for introducing this bill and Governor Newsom for signing it.

The bill received received bipartisan support in both the Assembly and Senate and did not receive any “no” votes in the legislature.

Fontana Unified High School Majorette Team, First in Inland Empire, Makes Historic Debut

he excitement rose to a fever pitch as the Summit High School Majorettes stood to deliver their first dance routine backing the Summit High marching band during the Summit-Carter football game on Sept. 15, with students, parents and staff roaring their approval as they watched an inspired performance of hip hop, jazz and modern dance in a debut that made history.

The 27-student SkyHawk team is the first Majorette team in Fontana Unified history and the first organized high school team in the Inland Empire.

“Majorettes is a platform at Summit for young girls to express themselves and to provide a safe place for them to feel comfortable and be their true self,” Summit Majorette Team Captain Sha’Niyah Chambers said. “It’s a bittersweet moment to see our vision for a Majorette team come to life, but knowing we have made history as

the first Majorette team in the Inland Empire is something we are very proud of.”

During the 2022-23 school year, Summit High biology teacher Dr. Sabina Glover was approached by Class of 2023 graduate Carmelita Spencer, who was looking for more options on campus for dancers to express themselves. Glover, who was born and raised in Georgia, recommended the girls start a Majorette club, and embrace dancing traditions that are hugely popular in the South and have been made famous by pioneering performers at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

“I’m a Southern girl, I was a Majorette before I even started kindergarten,” Glover said. “We are creating a sisterhood for these young ladies. It has already transformed the lives of many of the families involved, and has really helped students find a platform for their creative gifts. I am so grateful for our parents, who are so excited to see this. They are doing everything they can to make it successful.”

PHOTO FUSD Summit High School senior Grace Ese leads a dance routine during the debut performance of the school’s first Majorette team during a football game on Sept. 15, showcasing the talents of the 27member team as they performed an inspired mix of hip hop, jazz and modern dance.

Though the club was a success, its future beyond the school year was in doubt. After parents of returning Majorettes held a meeting with Summit Principal Renee Castanon and Director of Multi-Tiered System of Supports Ayesha Brooks, just prior to the 2023-24 school year, the Summit Majorette team was born, with Glover as its coach. Summit High music director James Sharp immediately welcomed the team as the newest members of the SkyHawk marching band. “I am incredibly proud of the Majorettes for their unwavering commitment and passion,” Castanon said. “Their dedication is truly commendable, and it’s the driving force behind the team’s success. May their journey be filled with success, growth and unforgettable moments. Their hard work deserves all the applause, and we’re here to support them every step of the way.”

For Summit parent Kenya Gray, the Majorette team has proven to be a blessing for her daughter, sophomore Kalani Gray, who

struggled to find her identity at school until she joined the Majorettes. As a member of Summit’s first Majorette team, Kelani is part of a tight-knit group of dancers that have direction and support, as well as opportunities to explore academic and career pathways.

“Kalani came to Summit from a different school district and her first year was hard. I urged her to keep trying, to find a club or activity that resonated with her,” Gray said. “Kalani loves to dance, and she has really found herself through the Majorettes. She has so much more confidence now and has met many new friends. I’m so proud of her.”

As the newest members of the Summit High marching band, the Majorettes will accompany the band to all its performances, including football games, competitions and seasonal shows. Upcoming performances include the Western Band Association’s inaugural marching band competition at SoFi Stadium on Oct. 23.
