he daughter of immigrant parents and the first from her family to pursue a four-year degree after high school, Mary Martinez has always relied on the one person she knew could get her to the top: Herself. “I figured out early on that the motivation needed to come from me and not someone else,” the Alta Loma High School senior says, weeks away from graduating with honors. Though she hasn’t made her final college choice yet, Mary has been accepted into Stanford University – the kind of prestigious institution she has had her eyes on since arriving at Alta Loma four years ago. Before then, she wasn’t sure where life would take her. At home, academics had never been as big a priority as making ends meet. Her father, from Mexico, and her mother, from the Philippines, both worked long hours, and Mary herself has had jobs since she was 16. Older siblings helped

care for her, but there was never, in her words, “anyone forcing me to do well in school.” She figured it out, however, and with the support of close friends and the faculty and staff at Alta Loma, Mary is prepared to take a bold academic leap forward. In doing so, she will join a growing fraternity of students across San Bernardino County who are becoming the first in their families to get a college education. In the process, they are helping to transform a region where nearly three-fourths of adults do not have a college degree, and roughly half have never received any kind of post-secondary education. “Preparing students for college and career is what we do – it’s our commitment to every student and family we serve,” said Dr. Mathew Holton, Superintendent of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District. he spring season is upon us, and that means that local non-profit Project Boon (www.projectboon.org) is once again teaming up with San Bernardino's Inland Valley Recovery Services (www.inlandvalleyrecovery.org) to host their third annual FREE Easter event. For the third straight year, Project Boon will support the existing event, helping IVRS expand their reach to underserved communities and those in recovery, by hosting holiday meals, health services, the Easter Bunny and baskets.

Aguilar presided over floor proceedings as the House debated H.R. 1585, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA) of 2019. “To step up to the Speaker’s rostrum today was the honor of a lifetime. It was humbling for a kid from San Bernardino to have the embedded in that culture as soon as they arrive as freshman. “By the 10th grade, they’re taking formal assessments to help determine potential pathways,” Kaylor said. “Even for an exceptional student like Mary, whose academic record speaks for itself, figuring out what to do after high school can be an onerous task. We do everything within our power to help them navigate those next steps.” Mary herself describes high school as “an eye-opening experience. Everything changed when I got here, and saw my grades. I really enjoyed being recognized as a good student.” She had a particular aptitude for science and took the equivalent of six years of advanced science courses during her four years. Her true interests, however, are government and economics, which she plans to pursue in college. Today, her grade-point average stands at 4.63. The journey has had its challenges. While some of her peers were spending their summers attending expensive SAT prep courses, Mary worked to earn money for college. Despite her acceptance into Stanford, her

opportunity to lead debate in the US House of Representatives, and to preside over the chamber as we discussed such an important priority. I’m proud to have the opportunity to represent the community that raised me in Congress, and I was especially proud today,” said Aguilar. That goes back to her upbringing, and her reliance on herself to get things done. “I’ve had to separate my home life from my school life,” she said. “It’s been hard to look to someone else as an example. I’ve looked to myself and only myself.” Mary often doubted that would be enough, knowing too well the academic and social struggles that students from immigrant families often endure. “It’s not just an opinion, it’s a fact. You can see it in the numbers,” she said. “I questioned whether I would get to where I am. It’s what I wanted. I idolized it. But I didn’t know it would happen.”

Tax Day is coming, and while it is often a dreaded task, small business owners are celebrating the first year of significant relief under the new federal tax code. As the U.S. Small Business Administrationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pacific Regional Administrator, I see firsthand how small businesses in our local communities are responding to the tax reform and creating more jobs. The positive impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act signed into law by President Trump is clear. The economy outperformed expectations for the second year in a row in 2018. The labor force grew by 2.3% in the Inland Empire, 0.7% in Los Angeles County, 1.7% in Orange County, 2.2% in San Diego County, and 1.5% in California as a whole from January 2018 to January 2019, according to an Inland Empire Regional Intelligence Report. With the tax savings they are seeing, businesses are investing in their companies and their employees by raising wages, providing bonuses, increasing benefits and creating

The company is now looking to the future. It is investing in new equipment and committing more capital to research and development of new products. The booming economy is also paying off for American workers who are seeing more money in their pockets. Hourly wage growth is exceeding 3% for the first time in almost a decade. With the strong economy, there has never been a better time to start or grow a business. Whether entrepreneurs need access to capital, business counseling, or help breaking into international markets, the SBA has the resources to help. I encourage small business owners interested in taking advantage of the new tax laws to work with their tax professionals to see if their business qualifies for important deductions.

The ultimate human idiocy

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the ultimate form of human idiocy? I nominate religious suicide bombings, in which fanatics kill themselves to murder â&#x20AC;&#x153;infidelsâ&#x20AC;? of rival faiths or no faith. What type of insanity makes some fervent believers think theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re serving God by slaughtering defenseless strangers who did them no harm? Are these killers totally devoid of human compassion? Can they look at surrounding people and families with no reaction except a desire to murder them? Do they really think that God wants massacres, and will reward them with virgins in paradise after they sacrifice their own lives? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lunacy â&#x20AC;&#x201C; yet itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a daily reality of modern times, perhaps the single worst source of bloodshed since the Cold War ended. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so absurd that it couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t possibly happen â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but it happens almost every day.

On Jan. 27, two explosions at a Catholic cathedral in the southern Philippines killed 27 worshipers at Sunday mass and wounded more than 100 others. The Islamic State terror group claimed credit, saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;two knights of martyrdomâ&#x20AC;? gave their lives to attack a â&#x20AC;&#x153;crusader temple.â&#x20AC;? President Rodrigo Duterte announced that the attack was committed by husband-andwife suicide volunteers. The wife, disguised by wearing a large cross, detonated her concealed explosive vest among worshiping Catholics, then the husband triggered a second blast outside the cathedral door as survivors fled, he said. (Some military sources gave

conflicting reports, saying the killers used remote devices to explode planted bombs. Confusion is common after such carnage.)

Actually, the Philippine attack was smallish, compared to many that occur. The worst, of course, was the historic atrocity of Sept. 11, 2001, when 19 al-Qaida suicide volunteers hijacked airliners and crashed them into U.S. landmarks, killing 3,000 Americans. It was the most horrifying day in the memory of most U.S. residents. The 9/11 holy killers left behind a testament they had shared among themselves, saying they were doing it for God: "Know that the gardens of paradise are waiting for you in all their beauty," they assured each other, "and the women of paradise are waiting, calling out, 'Come hither, friend of God.' They have dressed in their most beautiful clothing." It's sickening to realize that 3,000 unsuspecting Americans died because of this adolescent male fantasy. A few years ago, researchers counted 17,000 Muslim terror attacks since the 9/11 horror, with a total body count beyond 60,000 victims. The phenomenon averaged five murder missions per day, so many that news media ignore smaller assaults. The Islamic â&#x20AC;&#x153;cult of deathâ&#x20AC;? has diminished to about one suicide attack per day now. The Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv gives these figures: 452 massacres in 2015 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 469 in 2016 â&#x20AC;&#x201C;348 in 2017 â&#x20AC;&#x201C;293 in 2018. Last year, 2,845 victims were killed

and 5,160 wounded. Many attacks involved two or more â&#x20AC;&#x153;martyrs.â&#x20AC;? Surprisingly, the number of women suicide volunteers has grown until they now constitute about one-fifth of the killers.

For years, I wished that the available supply of suicide volunteers would kill themselves off and the phenomenon would cease. But there seems to be an endless parade of new zealots eager to become â&#x20AC;&#x153;martyrs.â&#x20AC;? Various experts attribute the â&#x20AC;&#x153;cult of deathâ&#x20AC;? to political, sociological, economic or psychological causes. Maybe theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re partly correct â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but the glaring fact remains that religion underlies the ghastly, incomprehensible, maddening mess. Pundit Anthony Lewis wrote: "There is no way to reason with people who think they will go directly to heaven if they kill Americans." Columnist William Safire said the volunteers do it because their "normal survival instinct is replaced with a pseudo-religious fantasy of a killer's self-martyrdom leading to an eternity in paradise surrounded by adoring virgins." Columnist David Brooks wrote that the bizarre phenomenon is "about massacring people while in a state of spiritual loftiness." Normal people cannot understand why some fanatics kill themselves to commit atrocities. But, understandable or not, it's a deadly daily reality. ecently a friend gave me a provocative adage. DEVELOP MARKETABLE SKILLS. This is particularly meaningful in this time of economic woes and job instability. Its meaning is clear. Working people should develop optional skills. Have more than one way to make a living. When my friend was fifty years old he lost his job after twentyeight years. He had been in a highly specialized vocation.

He wrote two best selling books and started a business. He says, “When I was fired years ago, I vowed that never again would I be caught with limited skills. DEVELOP MARKETABLE SKILLS. Wisdom is vital for our economic future. No one knows how permanent our jobs are. Every current vocation is fragile at best. The key word is MARKETABLE. Basically, it means a job that will bring income. I’ve met several college graduates recently who can’t find a job. Their education has been in non-marketable skills.

I heard on television the other day of a woman who was making $50,000 a year. She lost her job, with no other source of income. Years ago, I heard Dr. Robert Schuler, of the Crystal Cathedral say, “Find a need and fill it.” He applied this principle to church growth. However, it is also applicable to any job search. The person above applied this to her situation. She came up with a unique solution. She learned how to shine shoes. Then she solicited executives in office buildings. Today she is an executive with several employees, making $100,000 per year. Bonnie was a pre-school teacher and a travel agent. She lost both jobs. Her husband’s job was limited and they had three children. She became a Notary, developed scores of regular customers and today makes more money per year than previously. Karen became a massage thera-

pist and takes her chair to business offices. She makes an excellent living.

Wayne is a retired veteran (78). After retirement he went to work for San Bernardino city; became a lawyer and a judge. Marketable skills. Homer is also an ex-military retiree. He became a fireman, an electrician and a manager of theaters. He possesses marketable skills. Jeff is 52 years old. He’s been a cook, manager of a fast food and manager of a picture framing business. He’s been in charge of maintenance in a large mall. He can do plumbing, electricity and carpentry. Marketable skills. If I was a young man today, I would survey the job market for those that are doable and durable. Like barbering, bartending, auto mechanic. These are “service” vocations and are certainly marketable. The biggest excuse I’ve heard about learning a new skill is simple. “I’m too old to learn a new skill.” I never buy it.

I recently read about a bull that thinks he’s a horse. He has become a show-jumping sensation. Sabine Rovas is a horse trainer from Strasbourg. She adopted Aston (the bull) about five years ago from a dairy farm. She soon noticed Aston watching practice sessions with a pony named Samy. So she started training the 1.3-ton horned male cow. He trots, gallops, walks backward, turns on command and leaps over a 4-foot obstacle. She even rides Aston like a horse. He is now in show business. If a bull can learn something new, well? Stella and I have a grandson named Jordan. He has a dog that cannot hear. He’s teaching his dog to read sign language. When he makes the sign to sit, the dog obediently sits. His dog responds to other signs. I ask you, if a bull and a dog can learn a new skill? What about a marketable skill? Amen. Selah. So be it.

Caden Center Coach Bob Sheehan hits 600 career wins

n Saturday, April 6th legendary high school varsity baseball coach, and my grandfather, Bob Sheehan, hit his 600th career win when his Beaumont High School Cougars beat Colton High School in a tournament game. What is ironic about this game is that Coach Sheehan got his first very win while coaching at Colton High School when he started his career. Sheehan has also coached

at Arrowhead Christian Academy, Costa Mesa High School, and, more famously, at Chino High School for 27 of his 37 years as a coach. Chino is where Sheehan collected the majority of his wins (482 to be exact) and the baseball field at Chino is now named after him.

Earth Vibes event to encourage community to protect Mother Earth

For the first time, a group of environmental justice, social justice, artivists and health advocacy groups are holding an Earth Day event calling for the conservation of earth’s resources and the implementation of sustainable health practices. Earth Vibes, taking place at Bryce E. Hanes Park/Jon Cole Skatepark from 1 pm to 5 pm on Saturday April 20, will engage the San Bernardino Community around climate and environmental justice through sustainable practices and the use of arts. Teters, a noted lecturer, speaking on arts, human rights and cultural issues in Indian country, will present “Whats in Your Heart” on:

LaBounty Endowed Chair at the California Polytechnic State University in Pomona. “Today, I am an active artist and exhibit internationally,” Teters said. “By creating multimedia installations that examine the social presumptions and portrayals of Indian people in pop culture and media, my artwork expresses my

personal and political views about America’s dehumanization of Indian Peoples.” Teters established the Racial Justice Office at the National Congress of American Indians and is a founding board member of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and the Media (NCRSM). “Often, people think about Native Americans as we were envisioned at the turn of the century. If we’re not walking around in buckskin and fringe, mimicking the stereotype in dress and art form, we’re not seen as real,” Teters said. “Native Americans are here, and we are contemporary people, yet we are very much informed and connected to our history.” Teters has held solo exhibitions of her work since 1992. She was the first artist-in-residence at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Her awards include the Allen House Memorial Award / New Mexico Governor's Award, Person of the Week in 1997 for ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings and the Chalmers Memorial Award from the American Civil Liberties Union. An award-winning documentary by Jay Rosenstein, “In Whose Honor?” provides a history of her work.
