n artistic hub where Inland Empire artists can showcase their unconventional, critical and logical pieces that provoke conversations on the social, political and identity issues of the day is a shared vision Andrew Thompson and Eric Servin are working to achieve. The Little Gallery of San Bernardino opened its double red doors in the downtown Breezeway on 4th St. in June and has already curated three exhibits featuring local artists. Andrew funds the endeavor entirely by teaching art and working as a photo lab technician at Cal State San Bernardino, and teaching photography at Chaffey College and the University of La Verne. Eric, a former student of Andrew’s, invests countless passion hours of sweat equity into the gallery’s operations. Andrew, who describes himself

as an artist working on the outer edge, completed his undergraduate studies in San Francisco before moving to New York in 2002 where he lived in the now gentrified region of Bushwick, Brooklyn for nearly a decade before returning to the Inland region. He holds a master’s degree in Studio Art from Cal State San Bernardino. Local artists are overlooked and underappreciated explained Andrew, who aims to shine a klieg light on Inland Empire talent. “There are tons of great art, but no place for it to happen, which is what I can provide with my space.” The types of work they want to showcase are specific. “We want the work to be Velcro hooks that start a conversation,” Thompson, a Colton resident, explained. “We’re interested in provincial art that has a larger scope, not art that is flaccid and Gallery, cont. on next pg.

The Friends of the Library sell the items in their bookstore and at their book sales at the Feldheym Central Library. Pastor s to host fir st youth unity ser vice

he San Bernardino Pastors United is having their first All Church Citywide Youth Unity Service. The Pastors are inviting the community to come out and support our Youth through music and good fellowship. The event is billed as a gospel service, however it has the impact more of a Gospel Concert. We bring together youth from various churches, unite cultures, bring together denominations; to re-ignite our passions to win more souls, cover our youth with compassion, love and a prophetic mandate for service; plus spiritually revive the City of San Bernardino.

Andrew’s other works of art will be featured at another upcoming exhibit Transition Zone at Chaffey Community Museum of Art on Sunday, Dec. 9 from 2 – 4 p.m. “There are plenty of artists who are economical in the Inland Empire, but are often accredited to New York or Los Angeles,” Andrew explained. “One is Jack Goldstein, whose retrospective was on exhibit at the Orange County Museum of Art.”

Our theme is “A Generation Giving Back, A Service of Thanksgiving to the Lord”. One of the guest speakers will be Pastor Bryant Trujillo, from The Way World Outreach Church Family, Dr. Reginald Woods, Life Changing Ministry, Dr. Joshua Beckley and Ecclesia Christian Fellowship, Pastor Rick Alanis Jr. Victory Outreach Church, and many other churches will be in attendance.

I’m vehemently against clichés,” Andrew declared. Currently the gallery is featuring oil paintings by Redlands resident Lauren Brewer in Haunted Humanity through Friday. There are curated shows scheduled through February.

“I want to keep investing in the Inland Empire, and I get to teach at multiple schools which helps fund the gallery,” said Andrew. “Our continuous belief in our dream is what keeps us going.” Andrew and Eric welcome any support from the community in the form of donations, sponsorships and volunteerism. he San Bernardino County Workforce Development Board works closely with school districts, colleges and business leaders to develop, expand and support career pathway programs that provide students exposure to career opportunities they never imagined possible, and receive hands-on training and certification they can use to obtain employment. Students receive college credit for the internship as part of a Community College Work Experience course. Career pathways are a pillar of WDBâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s GenerationGo!, a work-based learning initiative designed to ensure that youth throughout the county are ready to enter the workforce with the skills needed to compete today and in the future. The worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest designer and manufacturer of animatronics and

specialty items for theme parks, Garner Holt Productions, Inc. (GHP), based in Redlands, is now partnering with San Bernardino Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Workforce Development Department (WDB) to provide internships to high school students. This initiative is part of GHPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Education through Imagination, a recently launched educational division that uses hands-on applied learning at the K-12 school level to introduce youth to career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math and further enhance their learning options. GHP initially took on seven interns for a 120-hour program. During their time with the company, every intern was given an introduction to each of the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s departments to find tasks that suited individual interests. Then the students were asked to design activities that could ultimately be taught to elementary school kids, including writing the lesson plans. WDB is currently seeking businesses that are willing to provide work-based learning experiences as part of a high school curriculum. Targeted industries include utilities/energy, logistics/transportation, digital media, construction/engineering, automotive, manufacturing, and culinary arts, among others.

Beyond crazy in America The horrendous shooting of 12 innocent people at a country music bar in Twin Oaks California reminds us that no place in America is safe. If we thought there were some safe sacred zones in our country then we should ask the people in Pittsburgh. In particular, ask the people of the Tree of Life Synagogue in the community of Squirrel Hill where eleven people were murdered and six others wounded during a sacred hour of worship. Last week in Martin County, Kentucky, a woman shot her sleeping husband in his bed in the early morning hours. She then called a friend and told her that she was going to end her own life as well. She told her friend about their life stresses, consisting primarily of health issues and medical bills, and that she felt they could not overcome them. By the time her friend and others got there she was dead along with her husband. What makes a Marine Veteran decide to exterminate the lives of innocent people out for a night of dancing and fun in California? What gets into the mind of a man that causes him to wreak evil in the midst of a sacred place of worship? What happens to a woman who becomes so down that she sees the only way out of her misery is murder and suicide? Why did she feel like she had the right to take her husband's life? In general, Americans have gone crazy in recent elections. If you want to alienate your friends on social media, then take a stand on either side of the political spectrum. State your opinion about how much you love the Democrats or the Republicans and soon you'll have fewer friends who probably weren't your friends to begin with anyway. Americans have been marching for a long time. Dr. Martin Luther

King taught us how to peacefully protest. He demonstrated how to march and stand up for what is right. He had class. He wasn't perfect but he was a man to whom we need to look for how to conduct ourselves when it comes to going against injustices. Most Americans just want the simple things of life. We want to live out our lives in peace. We would like to work our jobs, raise our families, save a little money and occasionally be able to buy a car and pay for a home. Most Americans dream of retirement and doing things like gardening, fishing, traveling a little or just having a life free of the big hassles, at least for awhile. We would like to be able to go the doctor when we need to and not feel that we will have to second mortgage our house to pay the bill. Overall, today's Americans don't feel that anything is simple anymore. Too much on television is no longer entertaining but is filled with intensity; murder stories that are sadly true, gruesome violence and more bad news. Cable news and other networks have a "side" they have taken and all of their reporting is constantly pushing their side. Pushing their side unfortunately means bashing every element of the other side with anything that is dirty, negative or just an outright lie. Thus, most Americans are sick of elections and election commercials. We are sick of robo calls and email boxes stuffed with financial solicitations to support candidates. Who wants to see a national news reporter wrestling a young intern for a microphone in the press room of the White House and totally disrespecting the President of the United States? We know the next two years will be nothing now but campaigning for the next Presidential election together with all the rancor, hostility, violence, uncivil marches

and crude rhetoric that will accompany the upcoming election. Are we beyond crazy in America? Look to a supposedly safe dancing country music bar in Twin Oaks California. Look to a quaint neighborhood and a respectable synagogue in Pittsburgh, or a remote trailer in Martin County, Kentucky and we have to acknowledge that there is serious mental illness across our country. Look at how people conduct themselves today on social media. It's like there are no restraints on language or demeanor barriers toward others. The highways are filled with people who are ready to run you off the road or at least show you their middle finger. Sadly, all you have to do to experience America's craziness is to go to a public school, house of worship, a music joint or sleep in your own bed. Most often you don't have to do anything at all because evil and mental illness can show up right in your face. What can we do? Live cautiously. Know where the exit doors are everywhere you go. We must utilize security from churches to bars to schools and our homes. Every American should be required to pass a screening test at the local health department before being issued a permit to own a firearm. People with PTSD problems and other people who have already been verified as having mental issues don't need to be walking the streets with guns. Most Americans just want a safe, sane and peaceful life. However, overall we're beyond crazy in this country and sadly we are way beyond trying to really do something to resolve and protect our people. Dr. Glenn Mollette is the author of 12 books. Especially what caused their sickness and death. Reportedly, his change began when a sparrow flew into his cell and was ill. He cared for it and it became well. He then did something unusual for him. He asked a guard for help. The jailor was at first resentful but then relented and gave him a small box that Stroud had asked for. Then came his response, “Thanks.” The first expression of gratitude. Ultimately gratitude is a spiritual expression. Most Christians are aware of the word “Eucharist.” It

is the word used for the Sacrament of Holy Communion and The Lord’s Supper. Its meaning in Greek is “Thanksgiving.” The celebration of the Holy Eucharist was the first Sacrament of the Christian faith. Karl Barth, the great Swiss theologian of the last century, said it this way, “Gratitude is the only appropriate response any of us can make to God.” Helen Keller said, “I never feel so alive as when I take time to say, “Thank you.” Dale Carnegie stated that, “Gratitude should be expressed but not expected. Thankfulness is a key. It unlocks so many things that were closed, from frozen relationships to harden hearts.” However you spend Thanksgiving Day, I urge you to include time to express gratitude to God. Please read Luke, chapter 17. Especially verse 17. Amen. Selah. So be it.

oma Linda University Health Behavioral Medicine Center (BMC) has expanded its outpatient services with theEd Field addition of the BMC Outpatient Therapy Services program, which will offer

care for the full spectrum of patient mental health needs. This new program will provide additional therapy resources for the residents of the Inland Empire community, as well as allow the BMC to treat more patients suffer-

ing from a variety of mental and behavioral health challenges. “This expansion addresses the lack of mental healthcare providers available and touches on the impact we are hoping to make by continuing to expand our services,” said Edward Field, MBA, administrator of the Redlandsbased Behavioral Medicine Center. “Mental healthcare is no different from any other aspect of healthcare, and by working together, we can help reduce the stigma associated with seeking mental healthcare.” The BMC Outpatient Therapy Services program will provide care for a variety of needs in the Inland Empire region, such as opiate addictions, anxiety, depression, suicide prevention, and host of other psychiatric and behavioral disorders. The expansion of the outpatient care offered has been warmly welcomed by members of the community and continues to support the BMC’s commitment to providing whole person care to everyone it serves. “With these new services, patients will spend parts of their day receiving treatment, allowing them to continue managing their school or work life,” Field said. “Our priority is to create greater access to care within our communities,” said Melissa Pereau, MD, a medical director and psychiatrist at the BMC. “This is a period in time when we see a call to arms, and we need to be able to continue building what we’re doing to fight against mental illness.” Dragana Pitargue, program director of the Loma Linda University BMC Outpatient Services, says her hope is to collaborate with other departments in the health system in order to help patients with the behavioral health aspect of their treatment. “It’s extremely important to have an outpatient clinic for continuity of care, and our outpatient clinic is excited to partner with the Department of Psychiatry to provide a collaborative approach to treat-

ment,” Pitargue says. All therapists will be trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress. “With the additional

or years, every fourthgrader in Redlands Unified School District toured the San Bernardino Asistencia, and now, the San Bernardino County Museum announces the ownership transfer of the historic site to the nonprofit Redlands Conservancy. On Tuesday, Nov. 6, the Board of Supervisors voted to approve the transfer of the historic property that has long been a fixture of the region. Many Redlanders and visitors have had special events and parties at the Asistencia, and its tall white bell tower next to Barton Road at Nevada Street is instantly recognizable. The Asistencia as it is today is a re-construction of the outpost built by the San Gabriel Mission fathers in the 1820s. The re-construction was completed by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s on the original Asistencia

footprint after San Bernardino County, along with the San Bernardino County Historical Society, purchased the one-acre site in 1925. In the 1930s, the reconstructed site was dedicated as California Historical Landmark #42 as an outstanding example of handcrafted structures of the WPA era, opening to the public in 1937. Since then, the site has operated under the San Bernardino County Museum, a department of the county, primarily open for tours and as a wedding venue. "The museum's transfer of the Asistencia to Redlands Conservancy is the culmination of months of consultation with national experts, and thoughtful consideration of the best practices and examples of innovation in historic site management," said Melissa Russo, San Bernardino County

With its 200-year history, the Asistencia is a vestige of early California. In 1819, San Gabriel Mission fathers established an outpost, known as an estancia, about one mile west of the current site. By the mid 1820s, they decided to build a larger complex, known as an asistencia, with a resident priest. By the early 1830s, construction on several adobe buildings, including a chapel, was well underway. Before the site could be completed, occupied and sanctified, Mexico secularized all the California mission properties, and the San Bernardino Asistencia was abandoned.

Once Barton moved into his new house in 1867, the Asistencia adobe structures with their thatch roofs, began to dissolve, and by 1900, the Asistencia was mostly piles of adobe rubble. Recognizing the significance of the Asistencia's connection to the California Mission system, the County of San Bernardino took the action to save what was left and re-construct the site. Redlands Conservancy will become the eighth owner of the property since the 1820s. The San Bernardino County Museum's exhibits of regional cultural and natural history and the Museum's other exciting events and programs reflect the effort by the Board of Supervisors to achieve the Countywide Vision by celebrating arts, culture, and education in the county, creating quality of life for residents and visitors.
