t started as one man’s mission to clean up the streets of San Bernardino one Sunday at a time. Luis Ojeda, frustrated by the lack of action taken to remove trash from his own neighborhood earlier this year, took it upon himself to clear the garbage. Ojeda owns a demolition company in the city, Khan D’ Kulia, giving him access to equipment and dump trucks. Nine months later, Ojeda’s project, We Are The Change, has become a movement, one that showcases the commitment of a community dedicated to reinvigorating and beautifying the city. Ojeda is now joined by a diverse group of 35 – 55 volunteers made up of different races, political affiliations, sexual orientation, young and old, united in his mission, meeting each Sunday to help clear debris from city streets.

For the first seven months Ojeda covered all costs associated with the cleanup, supplying rakes, gloves and covering dump fees. It was after he spoke up during a city council meeting that Burrtec agreed to take the trash for free.

and Enforcement Grant
he San Bernardino Police Department has been awarded a $458,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long enforcement and public awareness program. The traffic safety program is intended to educate the public on safe roadway habits and deter people from violating traffic laws or practicing other unsafe behaviors that lead to injuries and fatalities. The grant from OTS will fund various education and enforcement activities for the 2019 federal fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2018 to Sept. 30, 2019): • DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols to take suspected alcohol/drug-impaired drivers – and those unlicensed or with a revoked/suspended license – off the road. • Traffic safety education presentations for youth and community members on distracted, impaired and teen driving, and bicycle/pedestrian safety. • DUI saturation patrols in areas of fatalities, high incidence of DUI arrests and collisions. • Patrols at intersections with increased incidents of pedestrian and bike collisions. • Checking for seat belt and child safety seat compliance. • Motorcycle safety operations in areas with high rider volume and where higher rate of motorcycle
crashes occur. • Speeding, red light and stop sign enforcement. • Compilation of DUI “Hot Sheets” identifying repeat DUI offenders • Specialized DUI and drugged driving training to identify and apprehend suspected impaired drivers. • Court “stings” to cite individuals driving from DUI court after license suspension or revocation. In 2016, 3,623 people were killed in crashes across the state, a 7 percent increase from 2015, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Particularly alarming is the rise in pedestrian deaths, with 867 pedestrians killed on California roadways in 2016, a nearly 33 percent increase from 2012. Along with the growing dangers of distracting technologies like phones and drug-impaired driving, this grant funding will provide opportunities to combat these dangerous and illegal behaviors. “Almost all crashes are preventable,” OTS director Rhonda Craft said. “Education and enforcement go hand in hand helping change behaviors that cause devastating crashes.” Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Beware of Black Friday, holiday shopping scams
Maryjoy Duncan Managing Editor
Black Friday is upon us once again, and with more and more consumers shopping online, it creates a prime opportunity for criminals to scam consumers. CNN posted an article with helpful tips to avoid falling prey to cybercriminals this shopping season: Cybercriminals create fake mobile apps and landing pages with realistic branding, especially around major holidays and events like Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday. They want to convince consumers to download bad apps or visit bogus sites and ultimately "phish" for sensitive data. A scam circulating on popular messaging platform WhatsApp ahead of Black Friday promises 99%-off discounts on Amazon.com. On Twitter, Amazon's official help account wrote: "Please don't share your order/account/personal details in such websites." Consumers are especially vulnerable when shopping on smartphones. Mobile browsers have a much shorter address field, and consumers may not see the full URL
on their phone. This makes it harder to spot a scam. According to marketing firm Criteo, over 40% of all sales in November and December 2017 were made on mobile phones, and the trend is only expected to grow. Be sure to check that the website has a valid "HTTPS" connection with a lock symbol, not "HTTP," which is vulnerable to attacks. Users should also be careful when downloading apps. Bogus holiday deal apps made by scammers can fool users into typing in their credit card information, while other apps feature malware that can steal personal data or lock a smartphone until the user pays a ransom fee. Yair Levy, a cybersecurity and information systems expert at Nova Southeastern University, says to only shop with retailers you trust. "Don't try to look for offers that are too good to be true. At the end of the day, that's what they are," he said. Levy also suggests having a credit card dedicated to online shopping. This makes it easier to track purchases and identify fraudulent activity. Shoppers should be wary of email deals, too. Phishing emails can look similar to those sent by top retailers, and consumers should ignore or delete these emails, no matter how good a deal seems. Cybersecurity company BullGuard says the aim of these fraudsters is to get consumers to click on a link within the email, and enter their personal information. Some experts anticipate more scam activity this holiday season than last year. "Every year we see this growing significantly," said Levy. "Why? Because it becomes more successful. Every year more people shop online."

A soldier never stops fighting; I won’ t give up until County respects home care wor ker s I know the importance of fighting for what you believe in. I’ve known battle lines all my life. At a young age I fought for our country. After my mom passed away I fought for my family. And now that I’m a caregiver, I find myself having to fight for the work that I do. I was 17 years old when I enrolled in the U.S. Army. I was young but the lessons I learned then I still carry with me to this day. First and foremost, our motto -- This We’ll Defend -- is something that is a theme in my own personal life. When my mom passed away, my sister was left without someone to care for her. My sister is 50 years old but has the mentality of a child as she needs 24 hour supervision. I feed her, bathe her, take her to doctor’s appointments, provider her medication and make sure she doesn’t run off on her own. I knew that I had to step up to the plate for my sister, to protect her and help her even if it meant I had to quit my career so that I could be her fulltime caregiver. Thanks to the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program, my sister is able to receive care in the comfort of her home and be cared
for by someone she loves and trusts. I’ve witnessed firsthand the benefits the IHSS program brings to those it serves, experienced the struggles that come with being a caregiver, and know the importance of defending both. The second lesson I cherish is from our Soldier’s Creed: I am a warrior and a member of a team. I am not the only IHSS caregiver in San Bernardino County nor am I the only veteran. In fact, there are over a thousand other local veterans like me who are caregivers. And my sister is not the only person who needs in-home care. There are more than 30,500 San Bernardino County seniors and people with disabilities in the IHSS program and over 26,000 IHSS caregivers - of whom I consider to be a team. It’s because of our team of caregivers that our low-income seniors and those with disabilities are able to remain in the comfort of their own homes instead of being institutionalized - saving taxpayers millions of dollars and resulting in better health outcomes for those receiving care. Yet, in San Bernardino County caregivers are paid only minimum wage and our county leaders have not been will-
ing to support a contract to lift caregivers out of poverty. As a result, we are often forced to choose between paying the rent and putting food on the table. If the county is truly committed to fulfilling its vision of “offering a home for anyone seeking a sense of community and the best life has to offer, it should start with providing its largest workforce - its caregivers - with a respectable and livable wage. The third lesson I carry with me today is also found in our Soldier’s Creed: I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. And that is exactly what I intend to do. I’m a fighter. I fight for what I believe in. I don’t quit. With November being National Family Caregivers month and also the month in which we recognize our veterans and give thanks with friends and family, I hope our County leaders hear my story, recognize the importance of caregivers, and take the necessary action to bring dignity to this vital work. Holidays and politics: Rebuilding civility
With the chill in the air and the leaves already falling, the holidays are just around the corner. Whether you’re hosting or being hosted, the old rule of not discussing religion, money, or politics serves as a reminder of the issues which can divide even those who love each other the most. But in an era where everything, from ice cream to music, is politicized, avoiding political topics in conversation with those of differing views becomes almost impossible. Is this overly divisive and everpresent political tension healthy for society? If the idea of wading into a political subject with friends or family with whom you disagree gives you a sinking feeling of dread during the most wonderful time of the year, you’re not alone. According to a Pew Research Study, 59% of Americans find discussing politics with those who share different views of the Trump Administration stressful or anxiety-inducing. Among individuals leaning to the left, only 28% find that discussing politics with those leaning to the right can be interesting and informative. This divisive picture is darkened by the fact that nearly one in four Americans feel that their relationships with friends, family, or coworkers have been strained by voting for opposing candidates. Unsurprisingly, these feelings of relational division only increase with greater partisanship or deeper ideological commitment, as nearly
half of all strongly-identifying liberal Democrats feel their relationships with Trump voters have been weakened by the last presidential election. With the polarization of the 2018 midterm elections, who knows how much worse these measurements will look just in time for your Thanksgiving dinner? Keep in mind, though, that these percentages are more than just ivory-tower analysis and have a greater effect than making your holiday gathering more uncomfortable than usual. These numbers, which capture the inescapable feelings that come along with living in America today, illustrate that political divisions are eroding the important social institutions which hold society together. Family, friends, and community organizations form the basis of a peaceful civil society. If these intimate relationships are torn apart by politics, is there anything that isn’t in the line of fire in the battle of red versus blue? In the wake of increasing political violence over the past few years – ranging from bipartisan acts of domestic terrorism to radical riots in cities and towns across America – the time for trying to heal these political divisions is long overdue. The best time to start on this journey towards reconciliation is at the holiday table with those you love. Although the state of America might not be the merriest thing to discuss this holiday, shutting down
the lines of communication deepens the polarization which is driving a wedge between a once united people. While political conversations can be unpleasant – ranging from mildly awkward to absolutely agonizing – the best place to start a meaningful dialogue is within your own circle. If you want to make a change within society, the best place to start is within yourself. This does not mean setting out to win an argument. This does not mean trying to change someone’s mind. Rather, engaging in a respectful dialogue and learning from the perspectives of others just as much as sharing your own is a way to strengthen a relationship and to foster a mutual understanding. Laying the foundation necessary to rebuild civility in American political discourse can only happen one brick at a time. A conversation at a holiday celebration won’t solve the significant policy issues which divide us. Even the magical spirit of this time of year can’t mend the brokenness of our country overnight. Despite this, applying the holiday season’s themes of love, charity, and kindness to our individual political engagement, especially when addressing individuals of differing views, is a step in the right direction.

arl Barth was one of the greatest conservative Christian theologians of the past century. He was a native of Basil, Switzerland. He said and published one of my favorite phrases. “The only acceptable response we can make to God is GRATITUDE.” I AM GRATEFUL TO God for the measure of health that I have. I am also grateful for my longevity (91). I am grateful for my family and my many friends. I am very grateful for Stella and our love for each other. I am especially grateful for God’s love, His mercy and His forgiveness. I am also very grateful that I was born in America and the freedom we have. I have visited 84 countries, and they all have made me more grateful to God and our founding fathers than I can adequately express. I revere our Constitution. I pledge allegiance to our flag on every opportunity. I sing with gusto the Star-Spangled Banner. I am proud to salute our flag.
I am eternally grateful for the freedoms we have: to worship as we please; to travel as we wish; to vote for whoever we choose; to marry the one we love; to be as economically secure as we possibly can; on and on. I cannot understand those who do not see our country as I do; but they have that right. Which brings me to my major concern. What would provide a man to make bombs and send them to those who disagree with him? Or, what would provoke a person to invade a church at worship and kill eleven people and wound others? It is also beyond my comprehension and understanding as to why so many of our citizenry espouse racism. All of it based on the color of one’s skin. History records that the human races all started as one from Serengeti, Africa. Everyone on earth has the same color blood; bodily structure and spirit. Even if the color of skin is white, black, yellow, red or brown. These freedoms are at the core of our Constitution and inheritance, given to each of us from the founders. I often remind myself that my grandparents were immigrants. As every citizen-except Native Indians. Our heritage is a common one. I have never been able to understand David Duke and the KKK. Some church members, in the South, in the 1950’s, wore the white robes on Saturday night and sang in the choir on Sunday morning. I pastored one. I have studied extensively Christianity, Judaism, Muslim, Hinduism, Buddhism,
Zoroastrianism, Shintoism, Shamanism, Agnosticism and Atheism. All of them, except the last two, have two things in common. While they differ in minor areas and practices, they all acknowledge God, Allah, Elohim, Jainism, Jehovah or the Ground of Our Being. A Creator is acknowledged. The second truth all religions have in common is the element of wrong doing. Call it what you will: sin, evil, Satan, etc. The potential is part of humanity. The two most dominant emotional attributes of we humans are LOVE and HATE. They demonstrate our actions and behavior. It has aptly been said that; “Love makes the world go around.” The Apostle Paul said, “And now abides faith, hope, love; but the greater of these is love.” Love is equated with compassion, attraction, caring, helping, supporting; BUT the Bible doesn’t explain it. It assumes that everyone understands it. Take John 3:16, “For God so loved the world.” God’s love is endless. Perhaps our understanding is clearer if I equate love with the word “an entitlement.” Compassion for the needy. But HATE. That’s the opposite. Quoting the Bible, hate is equated with “stirring up strife,” and “loving violence. “Historians state without fear of contradiction that the past century (1900’s) was the most violent in recordered history. Obviously, it was also the most hatred. Two elements were prominent: hate filled man and narcissistic men. I’ve experienced about 3/4 of the

few years ago, I was admitted into Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital for four days (don’t worry! I am completely healthy now!). Being in the hospital is not fun. However, the staff at the hospital really know what they are doing. They have an entire department dedicated to activities for the child patients to keep them busy. I really enjoyed the TV with gaming console and DVD player. After I got out of the hospital, with the help of generous family and friends, I was able to raise $1,500 to purchase a new TV, gaming console/DVD and isolation box to keep it in. This unit is now in the hospital and being used by patients! Last year, I decided I wanted to give back and do something special for the hospital again. That is why I started Caden’s Teddy Bears for Kids - a teddy bear drive benefitting Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. My goal is to beat last year’s total of 360 teddy bears which will be distributed to the children in the hospital on Christmas morning! My mom and I could not wait to get home while I was in the hospital and we cannot imagine that feeling on a holiday like Christmas. If you would like to participate, I would really appreciate it! Please bring NEW, unwrapped bears to any one of these fabulous teddy bear collection sites Friday, November 23 – December 17. Please remember - we love all of our stuffed animal friends, but this drive is for teddy bears only. If you are able to donate, it will make the day of a child and his family being treated at the hospital during the holidays! The timed competition began with the fly-in of a helicopter and San Bernardino Reserve Officer Training Corps Honor Guard commencing the event. “Aside from the charitable impact, I was a bit anxious to see what the course would look like. Ultimately…it was even more extreme than I could have imagined,” continued Cervantes. Cervantes shared that steep mountains and army crawling through viscous mud were only two of the difficult points during the 5K run. “Events like these are great for the community. an Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) has been named the recipient of a Veterans Resource Center Grant from the California Community College Chancellor’s Office. The grant provides just under $200,000 to enhance and expand services of the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) by allowing SBVC to purchase a new, ADA-friendly mobile cart, laptops and wireless access points, update the center’s front-line check-in area and replace worn flags, banners and emblems.
“The Veterans Resource Center at San Bernardino Valley College serves as a valuable resource and service hub for our student veterans and their families,” said SBVC President Diana Z. Rodriguez. “Being awarded this grant from the Chancellor’s Office will allow us to make necessary upgrades to our facility and better support our veterans as they strive for success.” SVBC’s VRC opened in 2012 to support counseling, educational planning and transitional services to veterans and their dependents.

id you know that 28 percent of people 65 or older live alone, according to AARP? Each year, these seniors have fewer family members and friends to provide company and care to them, which often leads to social isolation. The holidays can be especially hard for those who are living independently and may feel lonely. That’s why the Home Instead Senior Care® Office serving San Bernardino County is inviting the community to come together to provide gifts and holiday cheer to seniors who may be isolated from friends or family this holiday season through its Be a Santa to a Senior® program. This is the program’s 15th year. Last year, more than 1,400 local seniors received
over 6,000 gifts. “Be a Santa to a Senior helps bring comfort and a smile to many seniors. It shows them that people care about them and see them as an important part of the community,” said Geneva Labate, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving San Bernardino County. “Social isolation is a concern among seniors and the holidays often intensify feelings of distance and loneliness. Receiving an unexpected gift makes a big difference in their lives.” Be a Santa to a Senior is a true community program, getting generous support from businesses, nonprofit organizations, retailers, numerous volunteers and members of the community. Holiday shoppers can choose an ornament, buy the requested gift and return it to the tree location with the ornament attached. There’s no need to worry about wrapping — community volunteers and program partners will wrap and deliver the gifts to local seniors in time for the holidays.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property.
