Spending more on debt than defense The financial health of the federal government has been deteriorating for decades. Unable to break free from our bipartisan addiction to deficit spending, the national debt has continued to rise relentlessly. This has brought us within sight of a grim milestone: the day when the interest that Americans have to pay on the national debt exceeds what we pay for national defense. According to The Wall Street Journal article, “U.S. on a Course to Spend More on Debt Than Defense,” we will reach that baleful milestone in only five years. The figures are startling. In 2023, military spending is projected to be more than $700 billion. Yet in that same year the annual interest that taxpayers will pay on the national debt will be even higher.

our massive indebtedness. Of course, progressive opposition to defense spending has been a virtual constant for decades.

military programs, $1,051 billion on Medicare and health spending, and $1,275 billion on Social Security, Unemployment & Labor.

The fundamental problem with blaming Uncle Sam’s sorry fiscal state on defense is that, unlike those myriad other federal programs that have contributed to the national debt, defense spending is one of the few activities that Uncle Sam engages in that is explicitly authorized by the U.S. Constitution. For well over a century now, animated by the belief that the federal government should provide economic assistance to Americans, progressives have pushed for government to expand into areas of life never envisioned by the founders nor authorized by amendments to the Constitution. It is no wonder that progressives attacked Justice Kavanaugh from the moment he was nominated. They fear and despise his respect for the text of the Constitution, because they want to spend more money on things not stipulated in the Constitution and less on what is stipulated in the Constitution.

Today, military spending is only the third largest category in the federal budget. In five years, when interest payments on the national debt surpass it, military spending will be the fourth largest.

You can argue that the federal government spends too much on defense. That is an unknowable except in retrospect, but the cost of spending too much on defense is almost certainly less than the cost of not spending enough. Whatever you think about defense spending, at least it is for present consumption. By contrast, interest on the national debt is for past consumption – over $27 trillion worth by 2023. That is how much young taxpayers will have to pay to service the debt run up by their elders.

Indeed, the progressive agenda of expanding government beyond its historical, constitutional confines has been hugely successful. Defense spending as a share of the federal budget has fallen from an average of 48.1% from 1792 to 1860 to under 25% today.

When the enormity of this predicament dawns on stressed taxpayers, progressives assuredly will blame defense spending for

Defense spending no longer takes up the largest share of federal spending. In Fiscal Year 2015, Uncle Sam spent $609 billion on

The federal government is in uncharted waters, financially speaking. Historically, the federal government incurred significant debt only in wartime and then whittled away at that debt during peacetime. In the modern era, when federal spending expanded into new areas, the national debt has swollen rather than shrunk during peacetime. The fiscal problem, then, is not due to military spending, but to other spending. Sooner or later, something will have to give. We eventually will have to learn to live within our means. I don’t say that as a matter of opinion, but as a law of nature. It simply isn’t possible to live beyond one’s means indefinitely. The longer it takes for us to learn that lesson, the more painful the convulsions of a future debt crackup will be. — Dr. Mark W. Hendrickson is an adjunct faculty member, economist, and fellow for economic and social policy with The Center for Vision & Values at Grove City College.

Holidays and politics: Rebuilding civility

My doctor sent me for a CT scan after I went in to have a couple of lumps in my throat checked out. The lumps were never verified as being anything more than my spit glands. They just felt odd so I wanted them checked out. The scan revealed I had some nodules in my thyroid. My family doctor sent me to a local endocrinologist who eventually did a fine needle biopsy. The biopsy revealed I had a suspicious nodule. Suspicious means, suspicious of cancer. I got a second opinion and got the same report from another doctor doing the same kind of biopsy. Eventually I had a more extensive biopsy performed which resulted in the same suspicion. The suspicion doesn't confirm anything but is enough to warrant my doctor's recommendation to remove my thyroid. I have had zero problems with my thyroid. I cannot feel or see anything in my neck. My energy levels and weight have been fine. I have felt great. Yet, there is this report from two different doctors that they see something that could become very problematic and the recommendation is surgery. The first doctor did give me the option of surgery or we could

watch it and do occasional biopsies to track the growth of the nodule. I have not heard many success reports of anyone who has simply watched something get worse. A great friend of mine was told by local doctors that they would watch his prostate malignancy. They all watched it as it continued to grow and kill him.

Having surgery does not excite me. I hate the thought. I don't like the idea of having a surgery that has some potential of harming my vocal chords. I've been a speaker for most of my life. I like being able to raise my voice and even yell if I want to. In recent years I have taken back up my hobby of singing. Trust me, I know it's just a hobby but it's a hobby I enjoy. If I lost my voice I know I would be a sad guy because I've been down just thinking about all of this. However, it could happen. What happens if I lose my voice or if it's greatly altered? First I will be royally ticked off. Next I'll try to deal with what will have to become a different life. I've preached sermons and taught and given speeches and used my voice in such ways all my life. God already knows I'll use whatever He gives me to praise and thank Him for his goodness toward me.

Next, I'll do what I can. I have a book or two I'm thinking about writing. I'll work on those books. I started taking fiddle lessons two years ago. Maybe there is a reason I'm playing the fiddle. I don't need a voice to play the fiddle. Finally, I'll have a good excuse to avoid talking to some people. I'll just wave my hand and nod my head to indicate I can't talk today.

Oh well, who knows what the heck we will have to go through in this life. I have friends who have already undergone heart surgeries and lots of other procedures. We aren't promised a bed of roses without a few thorns along the way. My first wife went through hell with twelve years of multiple sclerosis. There is no need for me to sulk about losing my thyroid. Hah, who knows maybe I'll end up with vocal chords that might actually sing on tune or a voice that people will listen to. All in all it doesn't really matter because whatever we have in health, life and time are gifts from God to be enjoyed and used for Him and to help others along life's journey. Experiencing life is a gift and that's a rose I want to smell in some way every day. Dr. Glenn Mollette is the author of 12 books. His syndicated column is read in all 50 states.

bundant Living or Optimal Living are goals that most of us have. We also accept the observation that Scott Peck makes in the first sentence of his book, The Road Less Traveled: “Life is difficult.” A number of writers have given insights that can guide us in living abundantly in difficult times. Henry Ward Beecher said, “God asks no one if they will accept life. Their only choice is what they will do with it.” James Baldwin, famous novelist, wrote, “The challenge of living is to be present in everything you do, from baking bread to making love.” Hugh Hefner said, “Live life to its hilt.” Zorba the Greek includes these words, “Death is any day not devoted to living.” Boris Pasternate in the great novel Dr. Zhivago wrote, “Man is born to live, not to prepare for life.” Who can forget the words of Satchel Paige. “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you was?” And, “Don’t look back, something might be gaining on

you.” But, my favorite is John 10:10 where Jesus says, “I am come that you might have abundant life and you might have it right now.” The Irish are noted for boozing, singing, romancing and writing. Some time ago I ran across these lines of poetry: To live abundantly we need four things. First, we need SOMEONE TO LOVE. Believe it or not love does make the world go around. Rod McKuen, the noted poet, said, “There is no harm in not being loved, only in not loving.” He was emphasizing the vital importance of love and what it does for the one loving. Eric Fromm, a noted psychologist from a former generation, rightly declared, “Love expresses the measure of one’s aliveness.” It stimulates change. I’ve seen many teenage boys change their habits when they first fall in love. Love generates improvement. Remember George Eliot’s story “Silas Marner.” He’s a crotchety, bitter, self- centered man. A bachelor. Someone leaves a baby at his doorstep. His life is changed. For the sake of the baby he becomes literate, a scholar, an artist and a musician. We all need someone to love. Second, we need SOMETHING TO DO. Being a couch potatoe is out at any age for abundant living. Michelangelo was adamant in saying, “It is only well with me when I have a chisel in my hand.” As humans, we possess the power of choice and the ability to be creative. What a tragedy to ignore

these potentials. Are you depressed? Are you imprisoned by grief or any kind of trouble? One of my laws is, “Act the way you want to feel and pretty soon you’ll be feeling the way you’re acting.” (William James) Albert Schweitzer, the famous humanitarian, was a medical doctor, philosopher, musician and missionary. One day he was asked what he did when he was depressed. He surprisingly said, “I go outside and work in my rose garden.” For optimal living we all need something to do. Get a hobby, read a book, call a friend. Third, we need SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO. How many years do you want to live? Five, ten, twenty-five years? In the Bible it says our allotted years are one hundred and twenty. I’m suggesting we need to look ahead. Plan for tomorrow, next month, next year, etc. Personally, I have three events in December, one in January and two in February. I’m planning more for next year. I’m also losing weight. My goal is forty pounds. Planning ahead keeps us alive. We certainly need to look forward. Fourth, we need SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN. I’m talking about religion, but not just religion. Belief in family, country, friends or whatever. Believing in something gives an anchor to life when the storms of life surround us. What about a belief in your will or determination? Some years ago I heard Rose Kennedy, that great

matriarch, say when asked about what kept her going, “I always refused to be vanquished.” This in spite of the tragedies in her life. Word is that she attended Mass everyday. But a belief system does something else. It provides a focus and direction to our lives. Some years ago Admiral Richard Byrd made several explorations to Antarctica. On one trip he decided to venture several hundred miles from the basic camp and live by himself for several months. The cabin was partially under-

ground. After several weeks he became restless with cabin fever. He ventured outside, fully aware of what could happen. It did. A blinding snow storm came up and obliterated the cabin. With staff in hand he thought that if he stuck the pole in the snow and circled it, he would never be more lost than he was. He focused attention on the pole and eventually made his way to safety. Beliefs are like that. They provide focus and direction for living. We need something to believe in. Amen. Selah. So be it.

Program at CSUSB to discuss #MeToo movement

C

al State San Bernardino and its College of Social and Behavioral Sciences will host a program examining the #MeToo movement. The Rise of Women, #MeToo, and Why it Matters,” will take place Monday, Dec. 3, in the university’s Santos Manuel Student Union Theater. The event opens with refreshments at 5 p.m., with the program scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Featured speakers are: · Tiffany Jones, professor of history and chair of the CSUSB Department of History; · Kathy Nadeau, professor of anthropology; and · Meredith Conroy, associate professor of political science. They will discuss how they and their colleagues, and the broader academic community, can inform this cultural movement.

Though it gained widespread notice in late 2017 as a social media hashtag to spread awareness of sexual assault and harassment, the genesis of #MeToo was in 2006, when activist Tarana Burke founded the Me Too movement “because she, as someone who experienced sexual assault, wanted to do something to help women and girls — particularly women and girls of color — who had also survived sexual violence,” according to a Washington Post article. In October 2017, in the wake of allegations of years of sexual misconduct by Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, actress Alyssa Milano posted on her Twitter account, “Suggested by a friend: If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote 'Me too' as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters brings High School Bigs mentoring to Rialto

B

ig Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Empire recently launched its peerto-peer youth mentoring program in the city of Rialto. A $110,000 grant from Marathon Petroleum Corp. will enable the agency to serve an additional 100 youth through High School Bigs programs at Kelley, Preston and Casey elementary schools. Teen volunteers from Rialto and Eisenhower high schools will mentor students at the three new sites in weekly, one-hour sessions led by a Big Brothers Big Sisters program specialist. The grant also funds the incorporation of 15 STEM-related activities into the curriculum over the course of the academic year. "Our presence in Rialto will strengthen our ability to fulfill a critical need for positive youth mentorship," said Jennifer O'Farrell, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Empire. "The children in our program face unimaginable hardships, but this gift of mentorship from Marathon Petroleum will

create new pathways and exposure to STEM-related degrees and careers. We are so grateful to have the support of a company that believes in our vision of helping youth live up to their full potential.” Marathon Petroleum, which recently acquired Andeavor, maintains a local storage and distribution terminal in Rialto. The company sought an opportunity to make a tangible difference in its community by changing the trajectory for youth who face significant challenges such as poverty and homelessness, and lack access to educational and career opportunities. “Marathon Petroleum is committed to collaborating with our stakeholders to create cleaner, safer, well-educated communities where we operate,” said Tiffany Rau, director, government and public affairs. “We are proud to support Big Brothers Big Sisters and its mission to help children facing adversity with strong and enduring professionally-supported, one-to-one mentoring re-

lationships that change their lives for the better, forever.” Funding from the grant for High School Bigs will expose more local students to STEM-related careers through fun, hands-on experiences alongside their mentors. High school volunteers and elementary students alike will also benefit from enhanced essential life skills such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Empire currently serves more than 1,000 youth in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, including students at 19 High School Bigs sites. “The impact of having a mentoring program like Big Brothers Big Sisters in our community is invaluable,” said Mayor of Rialto Deborah Robertson. “It will not only give our local youth a positive role model to look up to, but also make it possible for them to create positive generational change for their families."

“Saving the Mojave Desert from a Corporate Water Grab” focus of next Sierra Club meeting

T

he next meeting of the San Gorgonio Chapter, Sierra Club will be Tuesday, December 4, 7:30 p.m. at the San Bernardino County Museum, 2014 Orange Tree Lane, Redlands. John Monsen and Chris Clark will present a program titled, “Saving the Mojave Desert from a Corporate Water Grab”. A private corporation, Cadiz Inc., plans to drain water from under public lands in the Mojave Desert near Joshua Tree National Park and sell it to the highest bidder. New scientific research has confirmed that this dangerous project promises to dry up critical springs that desert life depends on. One such area is Bonanza Springs. According to the Bureau of Land

Management (BLM), it is “One of the few natural watering areas for wildlife within the Mojave Desert.” The BLM has designated Bonanza Springs as a “Watchable Wildlife Habitat.” Chris Clarke is the California Desert Program Manager for the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA). His presentation will discuss the majesty of the Mojave Desert and as its fragility as well as the history of Cadiz and the efforts to stop the project. He will also fill us in on the latest scientific research. John Monsen, NPCA consultant and long-time Sierra Club organizer, will provide an update on efforts to stop the project, covering the prospects for state legislation in 2019 and how

we can educate our local water districts about the risk of signing up for Cadiz water and the damage the Cadiz water grab will cause. John is president of JFM Consulting, a company dedicated to protecting our public lands for all to appreciate. John was the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Sierra Club's Angeles Chapter in 2017 for his work in helping to establish San Gabriel Mountains National Monument (SGMNM). Parking and admission are free but donations are accepted for IECN PHOTO JOHN MONSEN room rental. The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will present their annual holiday concert featuring singer David Archuleta on December 1.

F

ollowing a successful start to their 90th concert season, the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra is now gearing up for their Annual Holiday Concert, this year featuring popular vocalist David Archuleta. The performance is scheduled to kick off the holiday season on December 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the historic California Theatre of the Performing Arts.

“Everyone has so much going on each December, it seemed appropriate to place this event just following the Thanksgiving holiday weekend to transport our beloved audience directly into the holiday mood,” said Symphony Board President Dean McVay. This family friendly concert will include a number of traditional

This is the second piece of new music to be premiered by the Symphony this season. Its ovation-inspiring commissioned work, “Voices of the West” by Emmy award-winning composer John Wineglass, was performed in October. “We are very excited to bring our second world premier to the California Theatre this season,” said McVay. “Alcala’s music is thoughtful and ethereal, and we believe it captures the beauty of the season in a way that will leave the audience breathless.” In the second half of the concert,

popular vocalist David Archuleta will join the Symphony on stage to perform a number of holiday songs. The talented young Utahan has released eight albums since his rise to fame began in 2008. His first single “Crush,” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart the week of its release. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the track sold 166,000 downloads that first week in the U.S. and subsequently more than 1.92 million digital copies. Three months later, his self-titled album, “David Archuleta,” went gold, selling more than 750,000 copies in the U.S., and more than 900,000 worldwide. He will be releasing a new Christmas album, “Winter in the Air” in December. He has toured throughout the US, Canada, and Asia, and has performed in the Middle East for the U.S. troops. “We are excited to welcome fans of David Archuleta from around the country and beyond. Tickets have been sold to residents of Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, and Michigan. We even have people coming from Singapore!” said McVay. The conductor for this concert is Maestro Dean Anderson, the seventh talented contender in the Symphony’s two year long music director search. Anderson currently serves as Music Director and Artistic Director for the Dana Point Symphony, and has completed six successful seasons with the orchestra. In addition, he is the Artistic Director for Symphony Irvine. Dr. Anderson is also the Director of Orchestra Studies at La Sierra University and the Director of Instrumental Activities at Occidental College. He is also the Music Director for the Montecito International Music Festival Orchestra and has served as cover conductor for the San Diego Symphony. February, March, and April Concerts Three inspiring concerts follow the December performance. February 9, 2019, audiences will enjoy A Night at the Pictures.

Guest conductor Ming Luke will lead a family-friendly musical romp through beloved favorites from Rossini, Mussorgsky, Strauss, and Mozart… all selected from cartoons and movies! This is a perfect concert to introduce young music lovers to the Symphony! This concert was also selected to be performed twice for local students on Friday morning, February 8 as part of the Symphony’s partnerships with the San Bernardino City Unified School District and the Upland Unified School District. March 16, 2019, the Orchestra will present An Evening with Melissa Manchester under the baton of our Maestra Sharon Lavery. The first half of the concert will be dedicated to the music of George Gershwin, including selections from Porgy and Bess, and pianist Bernadene Blaha will perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. In the second half, Grammy award-winning singer/actress Melissa Manchester will take the stage to perform her tribute to “The Fellas” and some of her own popular songs. To complete the 90th season, on April 13, 2019, the Orchestra will present Celestial Sounds.
