n investigation is still underway by the San Bernardino Police Department in the eight person shooting that occurred at 1277 East Lynwood Drive on September 2. The incident took place just hours after a congregational dice game went wrong and a vehicle rammed into the gates of the complex. "It was learned that there were a total of eight victims that were struck by gunfire. Additionally, there was a passing vehicle and an apartment in the area that were struck by gunfire. At this point two victims are in critical condition, and the remaining victims do not have life threatening injuries and are expected to survive," said San Bernardino Police Department Sergeant James M. Academy eral reasons, but the most important reason is that his students are succeeding. Mr. Wierzbinski joined the Newman staff last year and served as the 5/6 grade teacher. Principal Susan Dorner stated that she knew she wanted to hire him, even before the interview. “He had glowing recommendations and his first Master’s Degree is in Educational Technology.” “All intermediate students’ academic abilities vary widely. Any intermediate teacher will attest to that fact. Intermediate students could be advanced, or above grade level, in some standards and below grade level in others,” Dorner stated. “We have found a way for students to be able to grow academically in both their strengths as well as their weaknesses.” Because of the natural varying academic abilities in the intermediate grades, Newman invested heavily in technology. Every student has a Chromebook and instruction is differentiated through the use of Freckle (formally known as Front Row) technology. In a differentiated classroom, every student has the opportunity to work at their own instructional level in a way that is best for them to learn. Using this technology allows even more differentiation for students. They get to pick topics that are of interest to them. “Everyone gives more time, energy, and effort to topics they like,” Dorner explained. “This is true for adults as well as children. I know this is stating the obvious, but reading levels go up the fastest for the children who read the most.” Students also get to choose how to explore a concept, either by watching a video series, reading articles, participating in a group discussion, or working on a research project. If a student is stuck in math, they can receive instant support from instructional videos and a built-in peer tutoring component. And finally, students get to differentiate how they show what they know and how well they understand the materials. Dorner shared that another huge reason why Newman students are successful is the small class sizes in each grade level. “Small class sizes allow teachers to give each child the individual attention they need and deserve. Many of our students have made more than a year’s growth in a school year. That is huge and is what is needed

for our students who are below grade level on one or more standards.” Dominica Jackson, the parent of a Kindergartner and 5th grade student stated, “Newman is like a private school without the cost. It is meeting both of my girls’ needs.” Another key factor in our success is in how we celebrate and accept errors by acknowledging the part of the answer students got right and stating the missing or incorrect part of the answer. The Newman staff has worked hard to instill a positive culture that nurtures and rewards learners for making attempts. “So many of our students were afraid to give a wrong answer. Some would rather stay quiet and not even attempt to answer a question.” We ‘celebrate’ errors because it gives the teacher information as to exactly what a student does and doesn't understand. will be allowed in public areas within the complex if drinking or gambling is occurring, and all gates securing the property have been fixed. “I want to assure residents that we are moving fast and that this is a sustained effort until our city experiences real and positive change with the quality and safety of our rental housing stock,” said City Manager Andrea Miller. “We know this property is not the only apartment complex in the city that suffers from high crime.” Additionally, in October San Bernardino City Council is expected to vote on a new housing ordinance that will hold property owners accountable for the actions of its tenants.

The city has already begun to review its current ordinance, as well as ordinances from other neighboring cities, and is meeting with other agencies to obtain recommendations. “An investigation like the Lynwood event, with an abundance of physical evidence and lack of witness information, takes time,” read the city statement. The Cradle to Career approach that the County of San Bernardino developed with other community leaders is a collective impact methodology that begins with a strong developmental foundation for our young children and follows them through their educational years to give them the best opportunity for a college education while giving them the skills for a career beyond their degree.

This allows students to graduate high school with some work experience and college credit, and in some cases, with industry recognized credentials. It is my pleasure to announce that 14 students from Cajon High School and 12 students from San Andreas and Sierra High School completed internships at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and were placed with positions with private employers.

I have been a strong supporter of the Cradle to Career initiative since its inception and am proud to announce that because of the strong partnerships we have and the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s involvement, the Countywide Vision Cradle to Career program has even greater opportunities for our students. Generation Go! is San Bernardino Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) youth program. The Workforce Development Board is partnering with the K-12 and the community college system to pro-

These students will be placed in internships that will be completed during the spring semester. As John F. Kennedy believed, education is the key to a stronger future for our communities, our businesses and our nation.

In fact, all I had done was to pay my bills on time. There is nothing especially noble about meeting oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basic financial obligations. Isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t that just the expected normal course of action? Apparently the bar for integrity is set very low. If you simply perform your basic obligations then you are a person of integrity. I value the reputation I have continued to develop since my departure from Buffalo. The only time I was late with a payment happened following the birth of our first son. It was my fault. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t justifiable, though one can easily understand how it happened. I appreciate the trust that my church has placed upon me as I have served as the church treasurer for about 15 years. During that time I wrote several checks for amounts in excess of

$100,000 when we were constructing our new church building. While I have the trust of my church family, I have also built careful accountability structures into our processes, so that any impropriety would be quickly spotted by my assistants. To quote Ronald Reaganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s use of the Russian proverb, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Trust, but verify.â&#x20AC;?

The characteristic of integrity was once considered a requirement for leadership. President Dwight D. Eisenhower said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office.â&#x20AC;? What has happened? In 2016, I was faced with a voting choice between two major candidates. I was not convinced of the integrity of either person. The ongoing legal squabbles on both fronts continue to give me cause for concern. My very first lesson about the role of being a church treasurer came from my dad, who also volunteered in that office for many years. I remember well when he told me, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The first penny you steal from the church will be the most expensive penny you ever hold.â&#x20AC;? I suppose it is because of that lesson that I obsess over the pennies as well as the dollars.

When I present the annual oral report every winter, I rest confident that the numbers add up correctly, that not even one cent is missing. I used that same exacting standard when I handled my motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s accounts, and was honored by the faith and confidence of my siblings. When I reported the state of her finances at the time of her death, they thanked me for my integrity. I cannot effect much change on the lack of integrity in Washington, but I can practice moral and ethical decisions as I live my life on a daily basis. Granted, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made my share of mistakes in life, and maintain my status only by the grace and mercy of God. May I continue to be a positive role model in my family, my church, my workplace, and my community, because integrity does matter. It is the supreme quality for leadership.

Most of the countries in South and Central America are Hispanic-they speak Spanish. The exceptions are: Belize, Brazil, Guiana, French Guiana and Suriname. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve spent considerable time in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been studying Spanish for um-teen years. Plus, Puerto Rico. Many historians say that by 2030, the U.S.A.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s language will be predominantly Spanish. This information makes me somewhat of an expert of what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m about to write. By the way, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve also lived in Florida and California since 1951; in San Bernardino County since 1975. Which is currently 52% Hispanic. Obviously, IMMIGRATION is a

hot topic. However, the plethora of problems that plague the Hispanic dominated countries has their origin in the aftermath of Columbus in 1492. The contract between the invasion by the Pilgrims and the invasion by explorers in Central America and Southern America reveals the sources of their current problems: poverty, lack of education, jobs, poor health, previous dictators, questionable ethics. Philosophically the problems are easy to see. The settlers that came to the U.S. came for religious freedom, political freedom and soon established education and a Republic. In the Hispanic countries, the invasion was for gold, silver and converting the people. Within a hundred years from Cortez, the population of Mexican Indians went from 20 million to one million people, caused by venereal diseases and slavery. The recovery in Argentina and Brazil has been slow. In spite of NAFTA, Mexico is just beginning to respond and other countries like Guatemala have not. In spite of these dilemmas, I want to extol the virtues of the Hispanics that have come to our country. In my time in Central America, I saw the ravages of their hospitals,

the plight of their educational system, the tragedy of their intrastructures, and the corruption of their political beliefs. All these problems have left their citizenry in shatters. No wonder many try to get across our borders. Their families are shattered by the oligarchies and dictators that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give a hoot for them. Let me share with you what the Hispanics have added to our country. First a disclaimer. I only include a sample of each one, and I use my discretion. For example, Carlos Slim Helu. He is the richest Hispanic in Mexico. He is a Lebanese-Mexican. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just below Warren Buffett and Bill Gates in wealth. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s close to being an American. Several sources state he has invested several billion dollars in our Stock Market and Government Bonds. INVENTORS- Pedro Flores. He invented the YoYo. A toy for all of us. Luis Federico and Santiago Ramon of Cajal both received a Nobel Prize for several inventions. Ellen Ochoa invented the optical analysis system. Hispanic influence is obvious. Think of the cities that reflect their influence. San Diego, San Francisco, San Bernardino, San Jose, San Clemente, San Gabriel, Los Angeles, San Anselm, San Jacinto, Santa Barbara, to

name a few. A major industry for Hispanics is restaurants, featuring Mexican food. The number is numberless. For instance, in Highland alone there are 20 eateries and one is under construction within the city limits. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve counted them and eaten at most of them. According to the National Directory of Latino Elected Officials, there are 240 Hispanic Mayors in the United States. There are thirty-two Hispanic members in Congress and three Hispanics in the Senate and one in the Supreme Court. By the way, there are a total of 85 minorities (nonwhite) in Congress, Welfare is a basic social event for needy people. 16.8% (11,405,000) are white; 39.6% (26,884,000) are black; 21.2% (14,392,000) are Hispanic; 18% (12,222,000) are Asian. In contrast to the above, five percent of all doctors are Hispanic. There are approximately 9,000 dentists in the U.S. One of the most important statistics is about the number of Hispanics in the armed forces. As of 2015, there were 12 percent or 1,500,000 men and women serving in the military, approximately 400,000 in the Navy; 195,000 in the Marines; 600,000 in the Army and 300,000 in the Air Force.

One of the great actors of alltime was Joe Ferrer. His rendition as Cyrano de Bergerac was memorable. Others are George Lopez, Penelope Cruz, Rita Moreno, Antonio Banderas, Jennifer Lopez, Anthony Quinn, Ricardo Montalban, and Edward James Olmos. Richard Alonzo Gonzales, better known as Poncho, was one year younger than me and my hero. I was, and am an avid tennis devotee. He swept the Australian gang, eight straight singles U. S. championships. Power, swift and smart, he ruled the tennis world. Mexican-Americans have shined in football. Tom Flores. Tony Romo, Joe Kapp, Anthony Munoz, Jim Plunkett, Tom Fears, Steve Van Buren, Ted Hendricks. These players brought millions of Mexican/Americans to football. And now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time for golf. There are only a few Hispanics, but they were mighty. Luis Aparicio, Nancy Lopez and Lee Trevino. Border authorities revealed that for two years, more immigrants have returned to Central America than have entered the United States. The current number of Hispanics in the U.S. is 57 million or 18% of the U.S. population. In our extended family, we have 25 Hispanic Americans. Amen. Selah. So be it.

G over nor si g ns leg i s lati on to pr otect vetera ns On Thursday, September 6th, Governor Brown signed AB 2568 by Assemblymember Eloise GĂłmez Reyes (D-San Bernardino), a bill that requires county jails to determine a veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s status or previous military service when they are processed after an arrest. The change in processing at jails will connect veterans to Veteran Treatment Courts and other services at the soonest available time. Veteran Treatment Courts are a means of diversion for veterans entering into the criminal justice system and to avoid unnecessary incarceration of Veterans who have developed PTSD and other mental health issues as a result of their service. Veteran Treatment Courts lead to the treatment and counseling for many mentally ill offenders who are veterans of the U.S. military, including those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Military Sexual Trauma, substance abuse, or other mental health problems. â&#x20AC;&#x153;California has the greatest concentration of veterans in the country and as such, we have a greater duty to serve those who have served our country,â&#x20AC;? said Assemblymember Reyes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By inquiring about veteran-designation and military service, we can connect veterans much sooner with required medical treatments and services and potentially find alternative sentencing options that will not require incarceration. We have an extensive network of Veteran Treatment Courts and we will now ensure that our Veterans avail themselves of this option.â&#x20AC;? Upon being elected, Assemblymember Reyes formed a Veterans Advisory Committee to discuss the needs of Veterans in the District and throughout California. The committee typically meets quarterly to share their concerns with Assemblymember Reyes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;During our Veterans Advisory meeting we shared the stories of our veterans who were not given the opportunity to go through Veterans Court. It was wrong. Assemblymember Reyes listened to us and introduced a bill to fix the

problem,â&#x20AC;? said Danny Morales. Danny Marquez, also a member of the Veteran Advisory Committee was elated to hear of the Governorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s signature on AB 2568.

IECN is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexican Independence Day on September 16 5 things you may not know about Mexican Independence Day

n the early nineteenth century, Mexico, with a little influence from the US and France, began talking about a revolt against Spain. Father Miguel Hidalgo from Dolores, Mexico, was a leader of one of the rallying groups. Hidalgo and his officers were planning a revolt for late fall of 1810. The Spanish people found out about the revolt which led the Spanish Government to order the arrest of Hidalgo and his officers. When Hidalgo found out, he called a meeting at his church. He rang the church bell on the night of September 15, 1810, to call his congregation to mass. Here Father Hidalgo rallied the people to fight. He gave the speech which is now known as ‘Grito de Delores’, saying “Viva Mexico” and “Viva la independencia!” These famous words have been remembered and are said each year at the Independence Day celebrations. INDEPENDENCE DAY IS SEPTEMBER 16, NOT MAY 5

In countries outside of Mexico, the holiday Cinco De Mayo is very popular and has gotten labeled as Mexican Independence Day, however, this is incorrect. The fifth of May actually marks the Mexican victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. September 16th is the day Mexico claimed its independence and began the war against Spain, also known as Mexican Independence Day. INDEPENDENCE DAY IS A TWO-DAY CELEBRATION. Mexicans participate in “El Grito de Dolores” every September 15 at 11 PM, and the following day they have celebrations much like the 4th of July in the United States with parades, food, and family parties. On the 16th of September schools, most workplaces, and federal buildings are closed. THE LEADER OF THE MEXICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE WAS ALSO A

PRIEST. Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, also known as simply, Miguel Hidalgo, was the “Father of the Nation” and rallied his people during mass on the evening of September 15, 1810 in Dolores, Guanajuato, Mexico. His proclamation that night that all people should band together and fight against the Spanish government, became known as the infamous “El Grito” or Cry of Independence.

house with the flag colors of red, green, and white at this time of the year. Cities with large Mexican populations such as Houston, Texas, and Los Angeles, California have their own Mexican Independence day parades and celebrations where “paisanos”, or fellow countrymen, can join each other in celebration of their country.

Hidalgo was involved in a plot against the Spanish colonial government, and, when the plot was betrayed, he decided to act immediately. After arming the people, he addressed them from the pulpit, encouraging them to revolt. The exact text of this most famous of all Mexican speeches is not known, and a wide variety of “reconstructed” versions have been published, but he may have said, in essence, “Long live Our Lady of Guadalupe [symbol of the Indians’ faith], death to bad government, death to the gachupines [the Spaniards]!” Hidalgo amassed a large popular mob-army, but after much reckless pillage and bloodshed the movement was suppressed and Hidalgo himself was

captured and executed on July 31, 1811. Hidalgo’s “cry” became the cry of independence. In commemoration, each year on the night of September 15—the eve of Mexican Independence Day—the president of the republic shouts a version of “el Grito” from the bal-

The facility that was made possible through the generosity of Shea Family Charities, the J.F. Shea Foundation and San Manuel Band of Indians. The over 16,000 square foot building holds a 336-seat auditorium, band rehearsal space, dressing rooms, and designated design and set building areas. The San Manuel Performing Arts Center will serve the students as well as the community at-large. “For many years, our theater and band students were limited to the shared space of the old gym, and our larger productions needed to be held at the Sturges Center for the Fine Arts downtown,” said Aquinas High School President, Jim Brennan. “Our mission is to give our students a quality educa-

tion, which includes catering to the needs of all discplines. We are thrilled to now have the means to support those who wish to pursue the arts.” It is too early to say what productions may soon be seen at this center, however it does offer opportunity for ceremonies, conferences, dance and theater performances and concerts. There is no doubt that Redlands is the ultimate city to ghost hunt. Redlands’ Mariposa Elementary School is filled with happy students by day, but at night it’s known to be extremely quiet, dark and eerie. In the 1950s a boy named Billy was happily riding a bike and was suddenly hit by a bus in front of the school. Although Billy later died at a nearby hospital, many claim that he still wanders the school grounds. It has been reported in several different cases that if you knock on the nurse’s office door, someone will knock back. There have also been reports of Billy rocking the swings back and forth, from time to time. “I visited Mariposa Elementary School with my older sister and her boyfriend when I was about 15 years old,” said Arnie Lopez, San Bernardino resident. “It was a Friday night and we went to knock on the nurse’s door and sure enough, something knocked back. I never ran so fast in my life.” School officials say that there is no paranormal activity going on whatsoever, which is understandable when you do not want the public trespassing the school grounds in the wee hours of the night. “I have been to Mariposa Elementary and knocked on the nurse’s door at midnight, and the AC clicks on and the door is vacuumed in and knocks back,” said Yucaipa resident, Rob Thorpe.

Years ago, Prospect Park was allegedly a prime location for Satan worshipers to gather at night. “I used to run around Kimberly Crest and Prospect Park making the security guards chase my friends and me, while running from the guard, someone reached out from one of the orange trees as I passed and grabbed a hold of me, and it was not one of the people I was with. Scared the living poo out of me,” continued Thorpe. Prospect Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in California, located on the hillside of Redlands, also known by locals as ‘Sunnyside Redlands.’ In 2013, a man was arrested for raping and murdering a woman, and afterward, her dead body was discovered in the park. It has also been a popular hangout and sleeping spot for the homeless; with even more dead bodies have been reported from time to time. Prospect Park is also thought to be a prime location for Satan worshipers to gather at night according to aboutredlands.com. The most popular tale in regards to this park is about an 11-year-old girl named Lee Ann who was walking home from Kingsbury Elementary School and was abducted while taking a short cut through the rugged orange groves. She was later found dead, naked, and thrown under the stage in the middle of Prospect Park. “I had an eerie experience at Prospect Park. SBVC revives decades-old tradition in football season opener Saturday he 2018 season opener for the San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) football team will revive a long-established tradition against crosscounty rival Riverside City College (RCC). Since 1948, the highly-coveted â&#x20AC;&#x153;Victory Bellâ&#x20AC;? trophy has been passed between the victors of the football games between the two schools. For the first time in seven years, SBVC and RCC will once again battle for the Bell on September 15, 2018 at 6 p.m. at the SBVC Stadium.

RCCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s record edges out SBVC, with 39 wins compared to SBVCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 32. However, the teams havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t competed since 2011, when the RCC Tigers defeated the Wolverines and took home the Bell. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am glad each side decided to bring the game back, even for a limited time,â&#x20AC;? said SBVC Director of Athletics David Rubio. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With two cross-county rivals and both institutions having a great athletic history, there is no reason why this game should have waited as long as it did.â&#x20AC;?
