he third annual CJUSD Family Reading Con literacy festival takes place from 10 AM – 3 PM on Saturday, March 7 at Joe Baca Middle School. All are encouraged to attend this fun, FREE family event aimed at promoting literacy in our community. The Family Reading Con is offered in partnership with the non-profit Inlandia Institute, San Bernardino County Library, Kids Can Cosplay and Dynasty V Graphic Design. Visitors will hear from award-winning, professional authors, artists, storytellers, and puppeteers. Children can make crafts, play games and even write their own stories. Visitors can even take a selfie with a superhero or storybook character. Every child will go home with free books. The event also will include numerous booths sponsored by Reading, cont. on next pg.

The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health (DPH) released a statement early this week indicating it continues to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the California Department of Public Health to respond to reports of coronavirus (COVID-19) as it is quickly evolving. No cases have been reported in San Bernardino County. The health risk from COVID-19 to the general public in San Bernardino County remains low at this time. War is a complex game of strategy and tactics, politics and “interests,” but here’s what the

analysts and commentators usually forget to acknowledge: War begins with a moral compromise of incalculable proportions. It requires participants to dehumanize a designated enemy and commit mayhem and murder. It requires them to set their conscience — their soul — aside and do what they’re told, in the name of strategy, tactics and victory. And war always creates consequences well beyond the imaginations of its planners. It is, ahem . . . hell. This is not a metaphor. For instance, Kathy Kelly of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, my friend and peace activist extraordinaire, who was one of the speakers at the rally, spoke of a boy she learned about when she was in Iraq in 2003, during the U.S. shock-and-awe bombing campaign. The boy not only lost the rest of his family in one of the bombing raids, he was so badly injured that a surgeon had to remove both of the boy’s arms at his shoulders. When the boy awoke from the surgery, so Kathy was later told, he was so bewildered he asked, “Will I always be this way?” Kathy then threw the question out to the world, asking: “Will we always be this way?” This puts the question of war in its appropriate context: the context of manmade hell. Whether it is justified or unjustified, necessary or unnecessary, war from the perspective of its victims is hell. And an indispensable part of the global war machine is public relations, glorifying and justifying the violence committed by one side and relegating evil only to the actions of the enemy. Thus, even as the Times editorial board questioned the credibility and perhaps the sanity of the Trump administration’s act of war (and impeachment diversion tactic), it remembered to describe Soleimani as “one of the region’s most powerful and, yes, bloodsoaked military commanders.” No doubt. But for some reason the Times forgot to acknowledge the blood on the hands of the country Trump represents: the millions of people it has killed, maimed and displaced, the eco-devastation it has unleashed, over the last two and a half centuries (or simply the last two decades). So I leave that to Brett Wilkins,

who points out that “the U.S. has exponentially more blood on its hands than Iran,” noting that it has attacked or invaded no fewer than 22 countries since World War II. He writes: “Perhaps this sanguinary legacy is why, in survey after international survey, the United States is perennially voted the world’s greatest threat to peace in most of the world’s nations. After Soleimani’s assassination, Trump boasted that ‘his bloody rampage is forever gone.’ If only the same were true of Trump. . . .” And then there’s the racism of American militarism, so discreetly unnoticed by the mainstream media, which the late George Carlin blew open three decades ago, in the wake of the first Gulf War, in a standup routine on HBO called “Rockets and Penises in the Persian Gulf.” Rep. Ilhan Omar shared a clip on Twitter a few days ago. Carlin laments the country’s vanishing jobs and increasing ineptness: “Can’t build a decent car . . . can’t educate our young people, can’t get health care to our old people, but we can bomb the shit out of your country all right! Huh? Especially if your country is full of brown people — oh we like that don’t we? That’s our hobby! That’s our new job in the world: bombing brown people. Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Libya, you got some brown people in your country, tell them to watch the fuck out or we’ll goddamn bomb them!” And now, before I can even finish this column, the war has escalated. What will happen next is unknown. I cling to the essence of my revelation, that people do not want war. That is to say, they don’t want the moral compromise – the moral disconnect – of murdered or armless children present in their consciences. They don’t believe that victory is worth the price of hell. At the rally, I felt a possible future emerging. Then the moment passed. I wiped the tears from my eyes. The people do not want war, but right now we have almost no say in the matter. Assemblymember Reyes convenes hearing to examine youth homelessness

n February 25, a joint hearing was convened with the Assembly Human Services Committee, Chaired by Assemblymember Eloise Reyes (D-San Bernardino) and the Committee on Housing and Community Development, chaired by Assemblymember David Chu (D-San Francisco), to highlight one of the most important issues facing the state of California today, that of youth homelessness. Half of chronically homeless adults were homeless during the ages of 18 to 24.[i] With California’s increased efforts on prevention and early intervention among individuals at risk of homelessness or newly homeless, addressing youth homelessness is imperative in addressing the overall homelessness crisis. In recognition of this, Homeless Emergency Aid Program (HEAP) and Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP) both required, as a prerequisite to receive funding, that recipients set aside a certain percentage of funds to serve homeless youth (5% and 8% respectively). As California continues to bolster its services and supports to address its homelessness crisis, California continues to address youth homelessness in ways that meet the unique developmental and social needs of transition-age youth.

Assemblymember Reyes opened the hearing with, “Last month, Governor Newsom signed an executive order to create a new fund aimed at combatting homelessness by focusing on prevention and early intervention, providing additional services, and creating new temporary housing. It is vital that we include youth experiencing homelessness in these discussions.” Assemblymember Reyes continued, “In recent years, California has invested over a billion dollars to address the issue of homelessness. Those efforts have included a requirement that certain percentages of recently allocated funds be set aside to specifically address youth homelessness. Despite these recent efforts, we acknowledge that there is still more work to be done to ensure that this particularly vulnerable population receives adequate supports and services that are tailored to their unique needs.” Panelist included Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, Ali Sutton the Deputy Secretary for Homelessness at the Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency, Shahera Hyatt the Project Director with the California Homeless Youth Project as well as several other experts. Smiley Public Library prompted youth in the San Bernardino County Probation Department’s Gateway/Regional Occupational Program (ROP) to design and create a gift of appreciation for the organization. “We, as a department, are so thankful and wanted to give something back in return,” said Probation Division Director I Kory Oberlies. “It’s important we keep these libraries stocked and we couldn’t do that without generous donations like the one from the Friends of A.K. Smiley Public Library.”

On March 2, in conjunction with Read Across America, the ROP youth presented a Dr. Seussthemed structure to the Friends Bookstore to express their gratitude following a gift of 600 books to the Probation Department’s Little Mobile Libraries Project. Through ROP, youth learn various trade skills to assist with successful community reintegration. These skills, which include wood working, landscaping, and plumbing, can be utilized at home and in the youth’s potential career field. More importantly, the youth learn how to follow directions, stay on task, complete assignments, and work together as a team.

The Little Mobile Libraries Project is an award-winning program that supports reading by endorsing the “take a book, leave a book” practice. Four years ago, the Probation Department and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools collaborated with the Literacy Club to build 10 Little Mobile Libraries and place them at buildings throughout the county to supply free books to readers of all ages. “We are always looking for partnerships to promote literacy in our community,” said Les King, president of Friends of A.K. Smiley Public Library. “This was a perfect opportunity for both groups.”

What to expect in the final stretch of the NBA regular season

t’s my personal favorite time of the year, crunch time. The NBA season is coming to an end, but there’s still quite a bit to look out for. Who will secure the 8 seed in the West? How will the seeding look like in the stacked Eastern Conference? What teams will rise, what teams will fall? Here’s what my answers are to these questions.

The 8 seed in the West, AKA the team that will get swept by the Lakers in the first round (might be a little biased opinion). We have a couple solid teams in the hunt; the Grizzlies, led by the rookie sensation, Ja Morant. We also have the now Zion-led Pels, who have a ridiculously good amount of offense, and the teams who are on life support, the surprisingly bad Blazers, the Spurs, and the team no one expected, the Suns. Looking at this list of teams, I see 3 real candidates, the Blazers, who have one of the clutchest players in the

If you’re a team in the East you want to avoid being these following seeds; 8, 4, and 5. Because that means the Bucks are on your side of the bracket, and you most likely will only get a chance to win one series. That 8 seed will most likely be the Nets or Wizards, the 4 the Heat, who are very underrated, and the 5 could be the healthy Pacers or a healthy 76ers team. Either way,

Finally, some smaller things to look out for. Zion Williamson trying to claw his way back into the ROY race. Can anyone catch up to Giannis to win MVP? Can the Rockets and 76ers prove the haters wrong? Will the somehow amazing Raptors prove they have a legit chance to repeat? Definitely some things to watch. Matinee concer t will take a unique approach to chamber music

resh off another sold out concert evening, the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will present a 3 p.m. matinee concert Sunday, March 15, 2020 at the historic California Theatre of the Performing Arts.

“Sunday Matinee concerts have been an important part of our subscription season for many years,” said Board President Dean McVay. “Often people do not like to drive at night but still want to enjoy outstanding orchestral music. This is the perfect alternative for them!” Specifically selected for this concert are Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, Grieg's Holberg Suite, and – with Maestro Anthony Parnther taking the solo role - Mozart's Concerto for Bassoon. “I am excited to perform the Mozart Concerto for the first time in nearly two decades,” said Parnther, who will also be conducting simultaneously, virtually unheard of for wind soloists. “The bassoon is typically utilized in a supporting role in the symphony orchestra, so this is one of those rare opportunities where we get to witness the bassoon at its utmost; as both a deeply lyrical and virtuosic instrument.” Added McVay, “It’s not often that a professional orchestra of our size is fortunate enough to have a world-class instrumental soloist as their Maestro. We are so lucky to have one of the finest bassoon players in the world – who per-

forms weekly in many different capacities including countless film scores for movie and television – as our Maestro, and this March chamber concert affords the public a glimpse into his other life as a recording artist and soloist. I’m thrilled to be able to show off our Maestro to the community at large.”

Unlike traditional chamber orchestra concerts which feature perhaps a dozen or two orchestra members, this event will include a larger complement from across the Symphony’s sections. This is, in fact, in accordance to the composer of Serenade for Strings’ wishes. Tchaikovsky wrote on the second page of the original score, "The larger number of players in the string orchestra, the more this shall be in accordance with the author's wishes." Not wishing to disappoint the memory of the composer, 39 total musicians will be utilized. “The first measure of the Serenade for Strings, alone, requires a rich, deep, and intense quality from the strings,” said Parnther, “and it requires a full section of performers to achieve this sound.” Composed in 1880, Serenade for Strings is one of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved compositions. The score was used as the foundation of George Balanchine’s ballet Serenade in 1934 and excerpts from the score were used in the 2005 ballet Anne Karenina. The piece incidentally accompanied the final countdown for the Trinity atomic bomb test July 16, 1945, as broadcast by Voice of America. And, for

those more attracted to gaming than ballet, the first movement (Pezzo in forma di sonatina: Andante non troppo — Allegro moderato) is the motif of Stefano Valentini, one of the main antagonists in the game The Evil Within 2. Mozart's Concerto for Bassoon in B-flat major was written in 1774 when the composer was just 18 years old, and it was his first concerto for a wind instrument. “This is the first concerto Mozart ever wrote for a wind instrument and it’s a masterpiece,” said Parnther, adding “You’ll find that this bassoon concerto is particularly conversational in nature, especially in the first movement which contains plenty of playful banter between the orchestra and the bassoon. The middle movement is much more heartfelt and operatic in nature before the concerto closes with an elegant minuet.” Grieg's Holberg Suite, Op. 40, contains five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms. It was written in 1884 in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Dano-Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. It was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted by Grieg himself for string orchestra. Although it is not as famous as Grieg's Peer Gynt, which is itself usually performed as arranged in a pair of suites, many critics regard the works as of equal merit. Concluded Parnther, “These works penned by Tchaikovsky, Grieg, and Mozart, while demanding and highly detailed, represent
