n Tuesday, March 5 the anti-hunger national campaign No Kid Hungry came to Rialto to honor Dr. Monte Stewart, principal of Hughbanks Elementary School, as a 2019 Breakfast Hero. Rialto Unified was hailed as a champion of tackling the issue of childhood hunger with the breakfast in the classroom program. No Kid Hungry honored five school leaders as their 2019 Breakfast Heroes. Principal Stewart was an early adopter of the Breakfast in the Classroom program in the Rialto Unified School District. “He’s passionate about the program and sees how important breakfast is for his kids to succeed,” said Daisy Munguia, a senior program manager for No Kid Hungry California. “Everything he does goes back to supporting his number one stakeholder: his students.” Hughbanks Elementary 2nd grader Emily Ramero spoke about the Breakfast in the Classroom program and how connected it makes her feel to be able to eat with her friends and her teacher, as opposed to feeling

alone in the cafeteria because not all students ate breakfast before school. Taking breakfast out of the cafeteria and bringing it into the classroom takes the stigma away from free breakfast, and as

Emily put it, makes it seem like a family. Emily’s teacher Sergio Infante said that the breakfast in the classroom program was important because all of his students

were given the opportunity to eat allowing them the ability to focus more on learning and not hungry stomachs. Breakfast, cont. on next pg.

According to an official press release, Dr. Gutiérrez will discuss how the FBI and the Federal Government sought attempts and means to destroy César Chávez, the UFW Union and the Chicano Movement of the 1960’s. “The FBI did not find anything criminal on Chavez; yet they tried to destroy him by investigating him for over 10 years,” said Gutiérrez. “In life the blame is frequently placed on the victim. You are never shown the complicity and collusion of the FBI…disrupting, destroying and discrediting Chicano efforts,” said Gutiérrez.

Activist Dr. José Ángel Gutiérrez will be making a presentation followed by a book signing of his newest book “The Eagle Has Eyes” on Saturday at the Gonzales Center in Colton at 2 p.m. The book discusses how the FBI and the Federal Government sought attempts and means to destroy César Chávez, the UFW Union and the Chicano Movement of the 1960’s.

He was a founding member of the Mexican American Youth Organization in San Antonio in 1967, and a founding member and past president of the Raza Unida Party, a MexicanAmerican third party movement that supported candidates for elective office in Texas, California, and other areas of the Southwestern and Midwestern United States, also according to the published press release. rowing up, I was blessed to experience genuine love through my father, a loving husband. As a little girl, every Sunday I watched my father lovingly help my mother get ready for church by painting her nails and putting on her earrings. Although it was a known fact that my father could not stand the smell of the nail polish, he never complained as he gently covered each fingernail with the shiny red polish. His love for her was intentional. Painting her nails demonstrated the depth of his commitment to her by looking out for her interests over his. Healthy relationships are based on covenant love verses contractual love. Covenant love is sacrifice and serving. The picture it paints is about others. Contractual love is conditional and self promoting. It generally sends a message that says “What about me?” I always thought what my father did for my mother was normal. Now, I realize that his actions were beyond the norm and even beyond what he felt like doing. I understand what my father did when he painted my mother’s nails was based on covenant love not contractual love. He served his wife based on marriage being a living promise not a piece of paper.

In healthy relationships, we use our courage and rely on our confidence to wholeheartedly accept others for who they are. As we accept others for who they are, we are able to serve them out of unconditional love. Since we grow by the questions we ask, here is the question of the day: “What conditions have you set in stone in your relationships, demanding others to perform a certain way in order for you to love them?” Now that you had the courage to answer the question, it’s time to take action and challenge yourself. “What are you willing to do to paint a prettier picture?” If you desire healthier relationships visit http://thecouragegiver.com for upcoming workshops on healthy families. © RJ Jackson The Courage Giver RJ Jackson is a highly sought after International Speaker, Author, and Personal Development Guru, who has traveled the world for over 20 years inspiring others to take a risk with confidence and live life on the other side of fear. I.E. vs. NYC

Manny B. Sandoval Contributing Writer

Two weeks ago I traveled to New York City with my family for my 28th birthday. The moment I landed in Newark, New Jersey I immediately felt the difference between the west and east coast. During much of my educational studies at California State University, San Bernardino I learned about communication between various cultures and differences in communication styles. Now, back to the story‌I was finally out of the airport in New Jersey, en route by car to our hotel in Times Square. We get to the hotel and I realize that we were not greeted. This also happened at many restaurants we dined in. I’m so used to walking into a restaurant and having an employee say, “Hi, how can I help you?â€? But no, this rarely happened to us in New York. I found myself walking up to a customer service counter only to be looked at by an employee, waiting for me to say what I want. Customer service does not seem to be regulated to as high of a standard as it is over here, maybe it’s due to the fact that it’s such a monumental city, that people will continue to

visit, regardless. The first day of our five-day stay was much of a culture shock. At the end of the first day I realized that these people were likely not intending to be rude‌their communication style was simply part of their culture; it’s not wrong, it’s just different. Once I looked past the cultural differences, I allowed myself to truly enjoy the trip. I initially had a difficult time adjusting to the fast paced New York City lifestyle because it was something I hadn’t experienced before. Long story short‌visiting New York City was an experience. It was an experience I was happy to be able to treat my Mom to and have my cousin Ashley, my Godparents, and aunt and uncle from Ventura come along as well. I had the opportunity to visit the Empire State Building Observatory Deck (which is over 80 stories high), the 9/11 Memorial Museum, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the U.S. Natural History Museum and the Rockefeller Center Observatory; oh, and I ate an amazing pastrami sandwich that made my face puffy immediately after stuffing it down my face. All in all‌NYC was an amazing time and an experience I will always cherish. My biggest take away from it though, is how different the people in NYC are from here in the Inland Empire and Southern California. I know we come across difficult people here in the IE every now and then, but I am so grateful to be surrounded by people who are mostly caring and kind. ‌..regardless, I can’t wait to go back to NYC.

Including community’s input vital in achieving successful clean energ y transition Last session, California’s State Legislators voted to move California to 100 percent carbon-free energy. While national attention has shifted on the dire situation the National Climate Assessment Report foretells, right now, here, in the Inland Empire, nearly a third of our days registered poor air quality; thus, reducing pollutants with clean energy is of critical importance to the health of our communities. But how we approach that effort will be important to our region’s economic health as well. When I think about the future of clean energy in the Inland Empire, I think about the people. I think about Pat, a lifelong San Bernardino resident who suffered for years through the region’s increasingly hot summers because she couldn’t afford to turn on her air conditioning. After my organization installed a solar electric system on her home through a state incentive program, she got not just clean power, but muchneeded relief from the summer’s heat. I think of Pancho, who after being laid off from his job at a casino, got training in solar through the same state-funded program and was able to start a whole new career.

What Pat and Pancho show us is that smart people-first policies can address pollution and provide economic opportunities at the same time. We can clean up the air at the same time that we reduce energy bills for grandmothers and provide jobs for our youth. We’re already starting to do this with solar through programs like the Single-family Affordable Solar Homes program that helped Pat and Pancho, and SOMAH, the state’s newest program to bring solar to tenants of multifamily affordable housing, and seeing the positive impact it’s having on people’s lives around the region and the state. What more can we do, and how? For starters, we can ask Pat and Pancho. It’s the day-to-day lived experiences of our residents, their ideas and their leadership, that will drive real solutions. It’s the families in Mira Loma Village, where children are suffering from asthma and reduced lung capacity from diesel fumes, whose voices should inform our transportation policies. It’s the folks getting laid off from heavy industry and fossil fuel development whose ideas and passions should inform our workforce development programs. Only by actively listening to and engaging with our communities

can we begin to find solutions that truly benefit everyone. The new Inland Economic Growth & Opportunity (IEGO) initiative is a great example of this model at work. Private- and public-sector leaders and community stakeholders from Riverside and San Bernardino Counties are coming together to identify priority sectors for investment, like solar, that can improve our economy, offer opportunities for youth and those facing un- an underemployment, and make residents’ lives better. Moving away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources is non-negotiable when it comes to improving the health and vitality of our communities, and SB100 is putting us on the right path. Now it’s up to us to make sure we’re embarking on the transition in a way that will lift everyone. Making space for the voices of our community members in the process, and honoring that leadership, is one of the most important things our policymakers can do to achieve a truly successful clean energy transition. Bambi Tran is the Executive Director for GRID Alternatives in the Inland Empire.

Real warehouse job killer isn’t zero emissions, it’s automation If local leaders are really concerned about killing warehouse jobs, they should be worried about automation, not zero emissions. Warehouse operators in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties have promised jobs, and currently we’re seeing some of these positions be filled by automation. Enforcing rules on industry isn’t driving away business. Industry is driving away business because it’s protecting its bottom line, instead

of community health. Environmental justice communities are pushing the Indirect Source Rule at South Coast Air Quality Management District meetings to push industry to take a first direct step towards cleaner air and better jobs for working class families. The current model of business that exists in our region clearly isn’t working. Our jobs don’t pay

liveable wages, our working conditions are unbearable, and our air is unbreathable. It’s time for leaders to look outside the toxic cluster of fossil fuels and push for a more sustainable future. Very simply these seven letters mean, “PRAISE BE TO GOD.” With all the current agitation to denounce the religious tie of the U.S.A. to God, these words are extremely important. Thank you, Susan.

a parable that sounds like it should be in the Bible. It’s about an old Cherokee chief who was talking to his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves that live inside us all.”

“One is EVIL. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.” “The other is GOOD. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.” Thank you, Charles. Pr omis e to s tudents - free college f or t wo year s The Free College Promise seemed quite attractive to the assembled high school students.

W

hile many community colleges offer one year of free college to eligible students, the San Bernardino Community College District has gone above and beyond what most community colleges are doing. On March 8, SBCCD officials announced The Free College Promise; two years of free college, free textbooks, plus each participant receives $300 cash and the use of a laptop. "There is no GPA requirement and no essay," said SBCCD Chancellor Bruce Baron. This is the first self-funded two-year free college promise initiative in Inland Southern California. The mention of textbooks caught the eye of Destinee Chavez, 19, from Carter High School in Rialto. “Even for a used one it can cost $120,” she said. Chavez, who wants to be a nurse, was one of a sea of high school students wearing a free t-shirt and cheering for the formal launch of the new program. The Free College Promise will start this fall with 1,000 high school graduates of the class of 2019 from Bear Valley Unified, Colton Joint Unified, Redlands Unified, Rialto Unified, Rim of the World Unified, San Bernardino City Unified and Yucaipa-Calimesa Unified. To be eligible, students must fill out the California Community College application, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act application by August 1, 2019, and take a full course load each semester.

The launch included lunch, information and lots of cheering under dappled sunlight in an outdoor ceremony near the solar panels at the community college district headquarters. On the speaker's platform, lots of lawmakers, school superintendents, college trustees, and other officials. “This community is key to the future of California,” said Eloy Ortiz Oakley, chancellor of the 115-campus California Community Colleges system. He grew up in a working-class Los Angeles neighborhood, spent four years in the military and made his way eventually to a community college and then a UC campus. He recalled that his high school counselor never thought he was university material. “And now I serve on the University of California Board of Regents,” Oakley said, grinning broadly, hoping to inspire the students to shoot for high office. “You are the face of California. You are the future of California.” According to the Public Policy Institute of California, Inland Southern California plays a critical role in closing the statewide skills gap. Despite having high school graduation rates higher than the statewide average, Inland Southern California fares particularly poorly with respect to college enrollment. To boost educational attainment, in October the SBCCD board of trustees set aside $10 million in seed money to help launch The Free College Promise through do-

She said she started her college at San Bernardino Valley College and then she went to USC and Loyola Law School. State Senator Connie Leyva said her college journey also began at a community college. "It is critically important that our community colleges remain an affordable option for all students," she said. "When non-tuition costs like housing, food, and textbooks are considered, community college is often more expensive for our lowest-income students to attend than other state universities." Leyva recently introduced Senate Bill 291 to establish a new financial aid program which helps cover a community college student’s whole cost of attendance. “I might need some of you to come up to Sacramento and testify,” she said.

At the end of the ceremony Chancellor Baron asked all the students to raise their right hand and make a pledge: I promise that after high school, I will go to college. ver $1,500 was raised at the Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California’s annual hair-cut-a-thon on Saturday, March 2. The event was held at Riverside Community College’s (RCC) Cosmetology School. “The event was incredibly successful. Thank you to everyone who braved the rain to come out and support the cause. We had over 70 clients and collected 117 hair donations for Wigs for Kids,” said Angelica Tapia, office administrator. “Our kiddos were beyond ex-

cited to shave heads and cut hair donations. Thank you for helping create these very special memories for our kids. Together we are letting them know there is a community of people who greatly care about them,” continued Tapia. Community members who attended the event made a minimum donation of $10 and received a haircut from cosmetology students. “Volunteering for this event was awesome. I love helping people and watching the survivors cut the braids off the client’s head; it was an amazing and heart warming experience. I can’t wait for the donations to be made into Wigs for Kids,” said Maribel Meza, RCC cosmetology student.

Hair services made available at the event ranged from haircuts to clipper cuts and blowouts. “Thank you RCC Cosmetology staff and students for making this event possible...and a big thank you to all of our heroes for joining us today, including Reyna, Saydi, Benjamin, Luis, Julieta, and Vanessa,” Tapia said. “Also, We’d like to give a special thank you to Firefighter Mike Cook for over 10 years of commitment to this event and our cause, you helped start a magical event,” concluded Tapia. Shor t cour se of f road racing championship kicks of f 2019 season under lights at SoCal Shootout

PHOTO COURTESY LUCAS OIL OFF ROAD RACING SERIES

The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series will be taking place at Glen Helen Raceway this Saturday where off road racers will be pitted against each other in various classes of trucks and buggies.

T

he Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, presented by GEICO, (LOORRS) will bring its one-of-a-kind brand of high-flying, door-banging excitement to the off road Mecca of Southern California on Saturday, March 16, when the General Tire SoCal Shootout, presented by K&N Filters, kicks off the 2019 season under the lights from San Bernardino’s Glen Helen Raceway. As the most competitive championship in the sport, the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series pits the most talented off road rac-

ers on the planet against one another across a growing collection of fan-friendly, pulse-pounding racetracks, and has emerged as the world’s premier short course off road racing series. Nestled deep in the foothills of San Bernardino lays historic Glen Helen Raceway. The perfect location for outdoor motorsports excitement, this legendary venue has been thrilling racing fans in Southern California for over 30 years. It's only fitting that the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season will start here for the first

time in its history. Various classes of trucks and buggies will be tested against the tight and technical elements built into the rustic California landscape, and to add to the excitement, the SoCal Shootout will be a nighttime showcase, where the atmosphere is guaranteed to be electric under the bright lights and starry skies. Leading the way into the 2019 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season are a pair of champions that occupy each end of the sport’s spectrum – the crafty and experienced veteran, and the exciting

young prodigy. Pro 2 Champion Rob MacCachren is a living legend in the world of off road. In a career that spans all the way back to 1982, the 53-year-old Las Vegas native has won everything there is to win in this sport over the past three decades, including four victories in the famed Baja 1000. He is now a five-time champion in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series’ 4x2 truck division, and has amassed a total of eight career short course off road titles to make him one of the winningest drivers in the history of the sport. Rising star RJ Anderson parlayed a breakout 2018 season into his first Pro 4 Championship. The Riverside, California, native was born into the sport with the help of his father, Randy, who served as the longtime crew chief of Walker Evans, arguably the biggest name in the history of off road racing. As a result, RJ’s career path was all but destined to bring success and by the age of 14 he was already turning heads with his raw talent. In the 10 years since, Anderson has won multiple championships and has established himself as arguably the next off road superstar by capturing the crown in the 4x4 truck division. Flanking these two champions in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series’ showcase classes is a starstudded list of world class talent, including the likes of freestyle motocross legend Brian Deegan (Temecula), Kyle LeDuc (Temecula), Scott Douglas (El Cajon), Bryce Menzies (Las Vegas), Rodrigo Ampudia (Baja, Mexico), and more. While the big, powerful trucks of Pro 2 and Pro 4 are often the show stoppers, a total of nine different classes combine to provide an exceptionally competitive and captivating night of racing where men, women, boys, and girls of all ages will duke it out in a battle for vic-

tory. Few sports are as inclusive and family friendly as short course off road racing, and as a result the Lucas Off Road Racing Series has served as the launching pad for many budding careers, such as that of NASCAR rising star Hailie Deegan.
