he WELL UnTapped Fellowship Water Workshop, a vital event for discussing state water challenges, was successfully co-hosted by City of Rialto Councilmember Rafael Trujillo and Assemblymember James Ramos of the 45th District on Saturday, October 21, 2023. Held at the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, the workshop attracted nearly 50 community leaders, marking the culmination of the 2023 fellowship program led by Councilmember Trujillo.

Reflecting on his journey in public service and water issues, Trujillo shared his insights from the WELL UnTapped Fellowship Program. "During the water tours and discussions in the Program, I engaged with community members and industry leaders. I visited communities fac-

ing major water challenges, including arsenic contamination. These stories underline my commitment to public service and the necessity of our collective involvement in water discussions," Trujillo stated, encouraging audience engagement.

Victor Griego, President and Founder of WELL, emphasized the importance of Latino leaders in addressing California's water challenges. "California's water issues demand awareness from all Californians about conservation. These workshops equip leaders to collaborate towards sustainable communities amidst climate change challenges," Griego explained.

The planning committee included Clarixza Gonzalez from Assemblymember Ramos' Office, Dr. June Hayes of the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, Dan Jenkins and Angelica Garcia of the West Valley Water District, and Evelyn Dominguez and Edgar Montes from the Rialto Unified School District.

City of Rialto to Host Inagural Heritage Days November 18

n November 18, 2023, the city of Rialto will host the first annual Heritage Days in downtown Rialto from 11-4 pm. The event will honor Rialto, California’s rich history and exciting future. Attendees will be entertained with performers, stories from locals with roots in the community, a bike tour of Rialto’s Historical landscape, food and information vendors, and so much more. “This city has come a long way,” Cynthia

Alvarado, Director of Parks, Recreation & Community services said. “People can come out to honor this great city and share it’s history with all the new young families in Rialto.”

Admission to this family friendly event is free to the public and seeks to encourage the support of the Rialto Community and businesses. Streets surrounding the Rialto Civic Center (150 S Palm Ave, Rialto, Ca) will be shut down to traffic from 6 am to 8 pm for the special event.

“We have route 66, we have an original Adobe house from the early 19th century, and we have a community full of young families curious about Rialto’s heritage,” Cynthia Alvarado said. “This event will show people why Rialto is referred to as the bridge to progress.”

Adeola Davies-Aiyeloja - Championing Social Justice Through Art in San Bernardino

n the heart of San Bernardino County, a dynamic force driven by the creative vision and social commitment of Adeola DaviesAiyeloja is shifting attitudes over art and social justice. Adeola is a Southern California BIPOC artist with a multidisciplinary approach that covers painting, printmaking, digital collage, and more, Adeola has also spent over three decades advocating for social and health causes through her art. Her work delves into the intricate relationships between the environment, human health, and advocacy, all while evoking elements of female power, spirituality, nature, and her cultural heritage. A self-taught artist, Adeola's passion for her craft has only grown stronger over the years.

One of Adeola's recent projects capturing the essence of her advocacy is the mosaic mural titled "The RISE!". Collaborating with a group of fellow artists, they created 33 portraits of influential African Americans who have left an indelible mark on the Black community. This striking mural pays homage to luminaries such as Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Amanda Gorman. It serves as a powerful testament to the resilience and spirit of the Black community throughout history.

Adeola's commitment to her community goes beyond her art and extends to addressing pressing issues like the disparity in women's menopausal health. Recognizing that the lack of educational information about menopause was leading to reactive rather than proactive behavior among women, Adeola’s personal journey of understanding menopause for over a decade inspired her to launch the Menopause Project.

The Menopause Project seeks to fill the void in knowledge and support surrounding menopause, particularly in underserved communities of color in San Bernardino and Riverside. It provides residents, regardless of gender, with education and information about menopause, empowering them to navigate this natural transition more proactively. This project encompasses various facets, including public health, social justice, civic en-

gagement, cultural and visual arts, and literary arts. Through workshops, personal narratives, and artistic expression, this initiative aims to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and ultimately bridge the knowledge gap surrounding menopause.

Adeola's strategy to engage the community is inclusive and thoughtful, with accessible materials, multimedia components, and grassroots efforts. She is dedicated to reaching diverse audiences, including the LGBTQIA+ and disability populations, and is actively collaborating with local colleges and universities to expand participation and support.

Adeola's partnerships and relationships within the community play a pivotal role in the success of the Menopause Project. Collaborations with organizations like the Delta Rho Sorority in San Bernardino and Good News Hope and Help Incorporated have allowed her to conduct seminars and immersive art workshops, furthering the reach and impact of her initiative. Additionally, the Riverside University Health System-Public Health department is enthusiastic about incorporating Adeola's vision into their health programs, reinforcing the project's potential to benefit Riverside County residents.

Adeola Davies-Aiyeloja is an Inland SoCal Creative Corps grantee, a collaboration between the California Arts Council, the Inland Empire Community Foundation and Arts Connection - The Arts Council of San Bernardino County among others to put artists back to work. The grant made available over $2.8 million dollars for individual artists and collective projects in the region. Omnitrans Launches Call for Artists for Beautiful Bus Benches Project to Beautify the San Bernardino Valley

mnitrans was awarded a $100,000 grant from Creative Corps Inland SoCal and the California Arts Council to beautify bus benches throughout the San Bernardino Valley.

Omnitrans currently has a call for artists for the Beautiful Benches project. Local artists residing in the Inland Empire aged 18 and over are invited to paint 50 Omnitrans bus benches. Artists will receive a $1,500 stipend for each bench painted and community recognition for their participation in the project. Beyond employing local artists, the project will create greater access to art while also beautifying the bus stops and fostering a deeper sense of community identity.

In the past year, Omnitrans has been partnering with various organizations and utilizing grants to paint bus benches. In Fall 2022, The Artlands Creative in Redlands and the Garcia Center for the Arts artists in San Bernardino, both local nonprofits, hired local artists to paint unique art designs on 15 Omnitrans bus benches.

An in-person painting event with additional benches was held in January 2023. Omnitrans and The Artlands of Redlands were recently honored for their work in the community and received the Grassroots Initiative Award and an Omnitrans bench displayed in the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture in Riverside.

Since completion of the bus bench artwork projects, an article was published in Redlands Community News, and Omnitrans has received commendations and requests for more such bus bench artwork from elected officials, community partners, and customers. Community members have described the bus bench artwork as making the bus stop feel welcoming and inviting, and more than just a bus stop. It has also helped residents feel connected with their community and cultural heritage through the themes in the artwork. Because of the value of public art in transit, Omnitrans has pre-

viously worked on public art projects at the San Bernardino Transit Center, at stations along the sbX Green Line in San Bernardino and Loma Linda, and there will be artwork at stations along the sbX Purple Line. Because of the positive feedback on the painted bus benches, Omnitrans has also pursued other grant funding to expand bench artwork across the San Bernardino Valley and was recently awarded a Clean California grant from Caltrans for 45 more benches to be painted in early 2025.

“People have embraced this project,” said Nicole Ramos, Director of Marketing & Communications. “The Beautiful Benches project celebrates our community’s culture and rich history through art. We are honored to partner with local artists to cultivate unity and beautify spaces throughout the San Bernardino Valley.”

Creative Corps Inland SoCal serves high priority communities, allowing local artists to take part in building healthier and more vibrant communities and allowing them to work on local issues where their contributions have traditionally been excluded. They have distributed more than $3.8 million in grants for artists to offer unique perspectives and talents. The Beautiful Benches project provides artists with the opportunity to leave their artistic mark on their community and inspire generations to come.

SBPD Of ficer s Involved in Shooting of an Ar med Man

n Friday, November 10, 2023, at approximately 1030 P.M., fully uniformed San Bernardino Police Department Officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle for numerous vehicle code violations. The vehicle had three occupants in it. During contact with the driver, who was identified as Darrell Fowler of San Bernardino, officers confirmed that he did not have a valid driver's license. Fowler was asked to step out of the vehicle, but he refused. Officers gave Fowler numerous verbal commands, at which time Fowler was observed reaching near his right side.

He then moved his seatbelt out of the way and started to tuck his hand back, causing the officers to believe that Fowler may be reaching for a weapon. One officer grabbed Fowler's hand and tried to remove it from the area he was reaching towards; however, Fowler pushed the officer's hand away and quickly began reaching into the same area and retrieved a handgun.

At this point, an officer-involved shooting occurred. After the shooting, Fowler was disarmed, and medical aid was requested. While waiting for medical aid to arrive, Officers began rendering medical aid to Fowler at the scene. While rendering medical aid, officers saw that Fowler was wearing a gun holster.

The two other occupants in the vehicle were unharmed and transported to the police station to be interviewed. Fowler was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Fowler has an extensive and violent criminal history. Additionally, Fowler was the named suspect in an armed robbery that had recently occurred. This investigation is ongoing.

Fatal Traf fic Collision in Rialto, 1400 Block of West Foothill Boulevard

n Saturday, November 11, 2023, at approximately 12:17 p.m., the Rialto Police Department Communications Center received reports of a vehicle versus motorcycle traffic collision in the 1400 block of West Foothill Boulevard.

Officers and Rialto Fire Department Paramedics arrived on scene minutes later and located the motorcyclist suffering from life threatening injuries. The motorcyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene at 12:23 p.m.

The driver of the black Nissan Maxima involved in the collision remained at the scene and was identified as

Haloman Tellez-Zelaya of Fontana. Tellez-Zelaya was not injured.

The Rialto Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded and conducted an investigation. Preliminary information indicates the motorcyclist was westbound in the #1 lane of Foothill Boulevard approaching a green light at Shopping Center Drive.

Tellez-Zelaya was eastbound on Foothill Boulevard and entered the designated left turn lane. Tellez-Zelaya made a u-turn in front of the motorcyclist and a collision occurred. During the investigation it was determined Tellez-Zelaya was unlicensed and was issued a citation

the week prior for driving without a license. Witnesses and physical evidence on scene were used to corroborate the investigators findings. Impairment does not appear to be a factor in this collision. Based on the results of the investigation, Tellez-Zelaya was placed under arrest for PC 192(c)(1)-Vehicular Manslaughter and booked into the West Valley Detention Center with a bail amount of $500,000.

San Ber nardino Police Depar tment Awarded Grant from the Of fice of Traf fic Safety for Traf fic Enforcement Pr ogram to Increase Safety on Roads

he San Bernardino Police Department was awarded a $567,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The grant will support our ongoing enforcement and education programs to help reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths on our roads.

“This funding will strengthen our commitment to public safety in our community,” San Bernardino Police Department Sergeant Harvey said. “We will be able to increase our efforts in making our roads safer for everyone and focus on critical areas such as distracted driving, impaired driving and speeding.”

The grant will provide additional programs and resources, including: · DUI checkpoints and patrols focused on stopping suspected impaired drivers.

· High-visibility distracted driving enforcement operations targeting drivers in violation of California’s handsfree cell phone law.

· Enforcement operations focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors that put the safety of people biking or walking at risk.

· Enforcement operations focused on top violations that cause crashes: speeding, failure to yield, stop sign and/or red-light running, and improper turning or lane changes.

· Community presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding and bicycle and pedestrian safety. · Collaborative enforcement efforts with neighboring agencies. · Officer training and/or recertification: Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

The grant program will run through September 2024. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to the NFPA, Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home cooking fires, with more than three times the daily average for such incidents.

The fire and water remediation specialists from SERVPRO in the San Bernardino area urge home cooks to take some basic safety steps recommended by the NFPA to help prevent cooking fires.

Keep your cooking area clean and keep anything that can burn (dish towels, oven mitts, packaging) at least three feet away from cooking equipment. Keep a close eye on what's cooking, setting a timer to help you monitor foods with longer cooking times. Keep in mind that the leading contributing factor to cooking fires and to fire deaths overall is unattended cooking, so plan to be at home and in or near the kitchen at all times when cooking. "For those who use a turkey fryer to cook their Thanksgiving bird," says

Sooker, "it's important to note that more than twothirds of home cooking fires begin with the ignition of cooking materials, including food, fat, and grease. The NFPA strongly discourages the use of these fryers. n Tuesday, Oct. 17, the Board of Education presented the Outstanding Achievement Awards to students, parents and staff of RamonaAlessandro and Lankershim Elementary Schools, Del Vallejo Leadership & STEAM Academy and Middle College High School (MCHS).

Alessandro and the community. She has a collaborative spirit and the ability to work with others. Her participation with the PBIS team and family nights and other events contributes to Alessandro's positive culture and success. Dorsey inspires others through her positive attitude and strong work ethic.

The Board recognizes Outstanding Student Award winners to honor excellence in academics, athletics, fine arts, citizenship and most improvement. The Board also presents the Outstanding Parent/Grandparent/Volunteer Award and Outstanding Employee Award to individuals who embody the District’s dedication to student achievement and well-being.

Demonstration teacher Shannan Usher is an Outstanding Certificated Employee. Usher prioritizes the academic and personal growth of her scholars above all else. She holds the belief that every scholar can succeed and tailors the instruction to meet their diverse learning needs. Usher views each day as an opportunity to ignite scholar's curiosity, inspire critical thinking, and foster a love of learning.

Vivionna Hamilton is a fifth-grader and Outstanding Student. Hamilton is a driven scholar who excels in whatever she sets her mind to. She does well academically, plays saxophone in the advanced band and plays on the after-school softball team. Hamilton also works well with others and is very helpful, even representing her classmates as a student council member. Hamilton aspires to become a nurse.

Veronnika Palmer is a fourth-grader and Outstanding Student. Palmer is very kind and helpful. She helps her classmates if she sees they are struggling. She is always on task, has a very positive attitude and tries to excel at all she does! Palmer plans to study Environmental Science in college to help protect plants because they are a valued food source, and she wants them to still be around.

Ramona-Alessandro Elementary School, Principal Teresa Hopkins:

Jason Johnson is a sixth-grader and Outstanding Student. Johnson has a good attitude, is in school every day and is helpful to others. He doesn’t give up easily and is quick to correct any mistakes. He currently plays on Alessandro's soccer team and promotes leadership on the field. Johnson wants to play college basketball or football while studying architecture and engineering in college.

Outstanding Parent Award winner Cathlene Botello is dedicated to RamonaAlessandro’s School Site Council, providing suggestions and feedback to improve the school. She is a member of Alessandro’s Tiger University, which empowers families to build healthy relationships and college and career readiness for scholars. Botello plays a pivotal role in the lives of her children and makes a positive difference in the lives of others.

Outstanding Parent Award winner Samantha Liotta has been actively involved at Lankershim since her oldest child was in kindergarten, and he is now a high school senior. She has volunteered in numerous classes over the years, and she continues to help teachers long after her own children have moved on to other classes. professionalism and genuine passion for her role have not only strengthened Lankershim’s attendance system, but also built invaluable connections with the diverse scholar and parent community.

Kindergarten Teacher Gail Shaw is an Outstanding Certificated Employee. Shaw has been a beacon of commitment and excellence in education for more than 30 years. Gail consistently goes the extra mile for her students and their parents, ensuring they receive the utmost support for academic achievement. She works tirelessly to ensure that she is aligned to site and District goals and focuses on results together as she leads her kindergarten team. Del Vallejo Leadership & STEAM Academy, Principal Jackie Maner:

Eighth-grader Tyree Hollins is an Outstanding Student. Hollins is a kind and extremely respectful young man. He always gives 110% to the task at hand. He is a role model on campus and is always the first scholar to volunteer to help others. Hollins doesn’t know which college he wants to attend, but he knows he wants to make friends and enjoy life.

Kimberly Nguyen is an eighth-grader and Outstanding Student. Nguyen’s drive to learn pushes those around her to reach higher in an effort to keep up. She is also compassionate, going out of her way to help her peers and staff. Nguyen’s favorite class is STEAM, and she credits her teacher Nicholas Destasio for helping her to express her creativity in a meaningful way. Her career goal is to become an animatronics designer.

Marisol Delgado is an Outstanding Parent Award winner. Delgado is a constant presence on the Del Vallejo campus. She is more than an advocate for her son. She is his champion. Whether it's volunteering to attend field trips, participating on parent advisory councils or serving as a liaison between the District and school, Delgado is all in. She helps to make Del Vallejo a great place to learn and grow.

Outstanding Custodian I Marcelle Baber is an Outstanding Classified Employee. Baber has been essential in the maintenance of a safe and positive environment at Del Vallejo by way of the cleanliness of the campus and the pride and enthusi-

asm he takes in performing his daily tasks. His productivity and outcomes reflect his dedication to SBCUSD and the community at large. And as an employee and a human being impacting the lives of children, Baber is a testament to the true spirit of Basics of Excellence.

Elizabeth Thomas is an Outstanding Certificated Employee and Middle School Science Teacher. She approaches her work and customer service with positivity and optimism. Her approach to education is deeply rooted in doing what's best for every person she encounters. And Thomas’s actions and work habits are guided by her sense of purpose, positive passion and emotional commitment to her students.

Middle College High School, Principal James Espinoza:

Senior Anthony A. Lopez is an Outstanding Student. Lopez works hard in all of his classes, both high school and college, and currently has a 4.82 G.P.A. As an exemplary Peer Leader, he goes out of his way to help his classmates and the MCHS staff. During a recent Peer Leader event, Lopez worked behind the scenes supporting others and problem-solving. Lopez plans to continue his college education at UCLA before serving others through a career in medicine.

Nishia McCain is a senior and an Outstanding Student. She started Middle College’s first Mock Trial team and scored perfect 10s as a defense or prosecution lead attorney in every match. As ASB president, she's demonstrated her passionate, creative, risk-taking and totally collaborative leadership style that has inspired every grade level and club this year. McCain plans to become a civil rights attorney, where she will serve our community and close equity gaps.

Hardy Brown, Jr. is an Outstanding Parent. Brown is an amazing advocate for MCHS, promoting the dual enrollment site as a means for closing equity and college completion gaps. He's influenced many students and their families in their decision to apply to and attend MCHS, not just his own children, Peyton, a current 10th-grade student, and Jordan, a 2016 alumnus. And Hardy Brown, Jr.’s speech at the school’s 10-year anniversary was truly inspiring.

The Authority recently released a Supplemental Alternatives Analysis (SAA) identifying a new build alternative, the Shared Passenger Track Alternative, to be studied within the environmental document. This alternative is similar to the 2018 High-Speed Rail (HSR) Project Alternative but includes some changes, such as reducing proposed train operating frequency, proposing to retain some at-grade crossings in Anaheim, proposes potential sites for a light maintenance facility, and eliminating the need for a new BNSF Intermodal Facility in San Bernardino County. The Authority is studying possible staging tracks sites in the high-desert area as mitigation for impacts to freight rail during construction and operation of statewide HSR program. The statewide HSR program and its LA-A Project Section contribute to economic development, a cleaner environment, and job creation; all while investing in regional and local rail lines to meet the State’s 21st century transportation needs. A Celebration & Showcase of Native Film & Television was Held at KVCR Nov. 14th

NX TV, the National Native and World Indigenous Affiliate TV Station, hosted a special evening of celebration, showcasing Native American film, television, and culture on Tuesday, November 14, in the KVCR/FNX Studio.

FNX is the first and only nationally distributed TV channel in the U.S. exclusively devoted to Native American and World Indigenous programming and is carried by 29 affiliate stations in 32 states from Alaska to New York, reaching more than 80 million households across the United States.

The evening is an opportunity to showcase the new season of FNX’s original series Native Shorts, and the second season of the popular series from PBS Native America.

The event will kick off with a watch party featuring a sneak preview of Season 4 of Native Shorts, a captivating series that highlights short films created by talented Native American and Indigenous filmmakers, whose films appeared at the Sundance Film Festival, or cultivated through the Sundance Institutes Indigenous Films Program. Hosts of the TV series, Ariel Tweto and Bird Runningwater will be in attendance. The evening will

provide an opportunity for guests to meet our dedicated hosts. Native Shorts will premiere on FNX Thursday, November 30 at 8pm and will stream at FNX.org.

The screening will also include the popular PBS series Native America from Season 2. This series will present four hour-long episodes that present a groundbreaking portrait of contemporary Native America. Season 2 of this Native-directed series reveals the beauty and power of the todays’ Indigenous communities. Guests will have the opportunity to view episode 4 of the series, “Language Is Life” which highlights how Native heroes are using every tool to recover, revitalize and restore their linguistic traditions. Native America will air on KVCR Wednesday nights in November at 8pm. “We are excited for the return of Native America and to continue partnering with Native American filmmakers to tell their own stories,” said Bill Gardner, Vice President, Multiplatform Programming & Head of Development at PBS. “Audiences are in for a captivating, multiplatform experience crafted by a collective of talented storytellers that highlights contemporary experiences and ongoing traditions from communities across the country.”

Following the screenings will be an engaging and interactive Q&A

session with filmmaker and series producer Dan Golding and Manuelito Wheeler whose mission is to have Hollywood blockbusters dub into Navajo and is featured in Native America. Also, part of the panelist will be Native Shorts’ host Ariel Tweto and Bird Runningwater.

“This event celebrates the work of familiar faces to the FNX channel with Dan Golding a filmmaker with a direct connection to FNX through his previous work, and Manuelito Wheeler who helped FNX build a featurette when we broadcast the wonderful work he did on the Navajo language version of the Disney classic Finding Nemo. Local San Bernardino Diaper Distribution Program Marks 1 Millionth Diaper Milestone

Loma Linda University students who volunteered at the diaper distribution event on WEdnesday, Nov. 1, celebrated the distribution of one million diapers.

n initiative that distributes diapers twice a month in San Bernardino recently celebrated a milestone of 1 million diapers distributed since the program launched 15 months ago. Leaders estimate the program has saved local residents $250,000 during a time that for many people has been financially difficult due to surging inflation.

The initiative is coordinated by Loma Linda University Health in partnership with several community groups, including Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County, San Bernardino City Unified School District, and the El Sol Neighborhood Educational Center via the Community Health & Education Worker (CHEW) Program.

Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County identified a need for diapers, which can require up to 20% of income for local residents, many of whom work low-wage jobs. The county’s partnership group then approached Loma Linda University Health for assistance with distribution because of its experience coordinating food distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program operates out of an elementary school parking lot and distributes some 80,000 diapers a month, leaders say. The diapers are provided by the state through the county’s community partnership program. Loma Linda University Health warehouse employees work to store and deliver the diapers for each distribution event.

“We want to celebrate the families who are coming in, so we’re out there each time, rain or shine,” said Cristie Granillo, MEd, MS, of Loma Linda University Health’s Institute for Community Partnerships and manager of the CHEW program.

Strong community relationships have developed through this program, allowing the team to work toward closing health equity gaps by sharing essential resources, such as medical and school enrollment, potty training education, and awareness of other programs.

Drivers line up their cars awaiting assistance and are often given additional items or referrals to other services, such as preschool for their children or family nutrition counseling. Volunteers also distribute

600 food boxes each month.

The event has helped people like Monique Walter, who has nine children and has recently seen her apartment monthly rent increase by approximately 30%. “It’s really good to receive these because diapers are so expensive now,” Walter said in line while being served by a volunteer on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Loma Linda University students also participated at the event, either as volunteers or as a practicum requirement for their program of study. Many come from the School of Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Dentistry, and the School of Behavioral Health.
