Fire Frenzy in San Bernardino: Four Suspicious Fires on Nov 25 Calls for Colton and Rialto's Aid

S

By Manny Sandoval

an Bernardino County Fire Department grappled with a series of alarming fires on November 25, 2023, prompting a significant response and sparking an arson investigation.

The first incident was reported at 5:40 PM at 340 West Fourth Street, a vacant building in San Bernardino. Callers to 911 alerted the authorities to visible fire. Upon arrival, fire crews encountered smoke and flames from the first floor.

Despite the rapid spread, the fire was subdued within 10 minutes, and thorough searches confirmed no victims. The initial response included five engines, two truck companies, and several chief officers and investigators.

Later in the evening, at 8:55 PM, crews were called back to the exact location. This time, the fire was on the second floor. The blaze was more challenging, necessitating a second alarm and a 25-minute effort to extinguish. Again, no victims were found, and the fire's cause remained under investigation, distinct from the earlier incident.

While battling the second fire, at 9:31 PM, smoke was spotted at an adjacent building at 398 West Fourth Street. Firefighters rescued an individual hanging from a window and quickly contained the fire, which had started on the first floor.

In a concerning turn of events, a fourth fire was reported at 10:11 PM at West 2nd Street and South "D" Street, only two blocks from the original site. The responding units rapidly

controlled this fire, centered on a dumpster with the potential to spread to a nearby commercial building.

Battalion Chief Mike McClintock, in a statement, expressed concern over the nature of these fires: "The back-to-back nature and locations of these fires are alarming. While we successfully managed the situations with no civilian or firefighter injuries, we are treating these as suspicious. Our investigation unit actively seeks information and urges the public to come forward with any relevant details."

San Bernardino County Fire Department, assisted by Colton and Rialto units, demonstrated commendable efficiency and bravery in handling these incidents.

However, the suspicious pattern has led to an active investigation, with the community urged to report any information related to these fires to the authorities or anonymously via We-Tip.

As the investigation continues, the San Bernardino community remains alert, and fire services remain vigilant for further incidents.

For any information regarding potential arson, contact the Fire Investigation Unit at 909-3471771 or the 24-hour dispatch center at 909-356-3805.

Anonymous tips can be directed to We-Tip at 800-47ARSON (800-472-7766) or 800-78-CRIME (800-7827463), or online at Wetip.com.

T he Kids Ar e Home For the Holidays. How’s Their Mental Health?

A

By Dr. Archana Dubey, Chief Medical Officer, UnitedHealthcare of California

s the holiday season approaches, students across the country are wrapping up their papers and exams for a long holiday break. For many, it is a time to rest, recharge and catch up with friends and family. It can also be an important opportunity for the adults in students’ lives to check in about their mental health and wellness.

In college, our kids’ lives are full of new experiences; while exciting for many, navigating academic pressures and a growing independence can also bring about mental health challenges including anxiety or mood disorders that might need extra attention.

According to a recent health data brief from America’s Health Rankings®, young adults (18-25 years of age) faced the greatest behavioral and mental health concerns across all adult age groups, and were most likely to report frequent mental distress, depression, unmet mental health needs, suicidal thoughts, and substance use disorder.

M

Many assume that they would recognize when their child is facing things like depression or anxiety, but these challenges can often escape parents’ immediate notice. A survey fielding college students and parents of college students revealed large disparities in parent perceptions of student mental health struggles. Parents were twice as likely to report that their child did not experience a behavioral or mental health concern in the

last year, compared to what students reported about their own experiences. This disconnect is more than just a generation gap -- when it comes to depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, or suicidal thoughts, not knowing what students are going through can have serious implications.

Opening the door to honest conversations is an important first step, as is staying tuned in to behavior. Some common warning signs of developing mental illness include persistent sadness, withdrawal from social interactions, outbursts of extreme irritability, drastic changes in mood, behavior or personality, changes in eating habits, difficulty sleeping, frequent headaches or stomach aches, difficulty concentrating, displaying changes in academic performance, or avoiding or missing school.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when addressing mental health with your child:

Get the conversation going by asking questions. Mental health is a sensitive subject that your child might not want to discuss. As a parent, help make your child feel comfortable by approaching the topic with empathy and curiosity.

Consider asking questions that encourage them to share experiences rather than respond with “yes” or “no” answers: “How are you handling the balance between school and social life?” “Can you tell me about some friends you’ve met and what you like to do together?” “I’ve noticed you’re not feeling yourself lately, can you share what’s on your

mind?” Validate your child’s feelings and let them know it's okay to feel upset, anxious, scared, or angry. Avoid arguing about how they should feel and be open to discussing what makes them feel that way. Even though they might not respond, know that they’re listening. If your child hesitates to discuss their emotional or behavioral shifts with you, continue providing support and encourage them to speak with someone they trust who might better understand their circumstances, like a different adult, school counselor, or doctor.

Come up with a plan to take action. After carefully listening and assessing the situation, it's okay to have only some of the answers. To prepare for your child’s return to school, make sure they know what resources are available to them, should they need help -- whether that’s knowing how to access support available at school or on campus, or knowing the care options that exist through their insurance.

For example, they may have digital self-help solutions or access to virtual visits through their parent’s plan or on a student health plan. If you have any questions about resources, please speak with your doctor, insurance company or contact the school to better understand your coverage. While conversations about mental health may not be easy, they are essential. It is more likely that our children will turn to us for support if we approach them with empathy and openness.

Six Reasons W hy You Should Take Your Mental Health Seriously

By Stan Popovich, community writer

any people underestimate the impact that mental illness can have on an individual or family. It can be difficult to admit that you have a mental health problem in your life. Secondly, it can be just as difficult in getting the people you know to understand your situation without making any kinds of judgments.

As a result, many people do not say anything and hope that their mental health issues just goes away, which usually is not the case. So, here are 6 reasons why you should take your mental health very seriously!

1. Your situation may not improve: Your anxieties and fears can be extremely difficult to manage and more than likely you will need some help. Just as you talk to your doctor about your regular health, you should not be embarrassed in seeking help for your mental health. If left untreated, your anxieties, fears, and depression could get worse.

2. Drugs and alcohol just makes things worse: Drugs and alcohol can make your problems even more complicated. Drowning yourself in your career and job doesn’t work either in the long run. Many people have said that drugs and alcohol will only add more misery to your situation. Be smart and learn how to cope with your mental health issues by talking to a qualified professional.

3. Avoiding your problems does not work: Eventually, you will have to confront your fears and mental health issues. Save yourself the time and heartache and confront your problems now rather than later. You will save months or even years of suffering by getting help right away. The sooner you get assistance the faster you will start getting some relief.

4. Many people struggle nowadays: Everyone deals with fear, stress, and anxiety in one’s life whether your friends and others care to admit it. In addition, do not be embarrassed that you are getting help. We all learn new things from others on a daily basis and learning how to manage your anxieties is no different. In addition, your goal is to get your life back on track and not to get everyone’s approval. If people start asking you questions, just say your dealing with stress and leave it

at that. Most people can relate to dealing with stress and will more than likely stop bothering you.

5. You have a variety of options: There are many mental health support groups, organizations, and counselors in your area that can help get your life back on track. Talk to your doctor to get more details on where you can go for some assistance. Help is available but you must be willing to make the choice of getting better. Remember that every problem has a solution. You just have to make the effort to find the answers.

6. Do not make the mistake of doing nothing: There are many people who struggled with anxiety and addiction, and they tried to ignore their problems. As a result, some of these people struggled on a daily basis and eventually they became very distant and unresponsive. Many of them lost their lives. Do not let this happen to you!

usic Changing Lives announced that it has been honored with a prestigious 2023 TopRated Award by GreatNonprofits, the leading platform for communitysourced stories about nonprofits.

“We are excited to be named a Top-Rated 2023 Nonprofit,” says Josiah Bruny, CEO/Founder, Music Changing Lives. We are proud of our accomplishments this year, including our Know Justice Know Peace Mural Tour, where our passion for advocating for the arts, equity, and justice to end racism spoke throughout the region artistically through this movement. I started in this region 25 years ago, with the support of California Endowment and many others we are hoping to bring together musicians and artists to not only celebrate our cultures but uplift those that are addressing the unmet need of quality art that works to bring to light social issues and create impactful change within our region and beyond. We feel it's time to stop uplifting those glorifying the upsidedown kingdom that is destroying our communities.”

The Top-Rated Nonprofit award was based on the large number of positive reviews that Music Changing Lives received—reviews written by volunteers, donors, and clients. People posted their

personal experience with the nonprofit. For example, Darious of NSG Impact wrote, “Music Changing Lives, under the exceptional leadership of CEO Josiah Bruny, has been an invaluable partner in our journey at NSG Impact. With their expertise, we navigated the process of becoming a legitimate 501(c)(3) nonprofit, ensuring that we do things the right way. Their unique approach to impacting kids through art and music is nothing short of remarkable, unlike anything I've seen before. Music Changing Lives is undoubtedly a top-tier organization, and their contributions have played a pivotal role in bringing NSG Impact to the successful position we hold today.”

While the Top-Rated Awards run through the end of October, Music Changing Lives was part of the inaugural group to qualify for the year. In addition, we’ve been added to GreatNonprofits #GivingTuesday Giving Guide—an interactive guide to top nonprofits. Click

“Savvy donors want to see the impact of their donations more than ever,” said Perla Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofits, “People with direct experience with Music Changing Lives have voted that the organization is making a real difference.”
