Since the implementation of this program the campus is cleaner, students are more alert and taking ownership of their campus,” shared Eisenhower High School Principal

Giveaway that the group existed solely for the purpose of helping others. “That day,” said Patterson, “they were passing out school supplies, backpacks, shoes, baby formula and diapers. They told me how they helped raise money for different causes and had even helped repaint a classroom. I realized they were in unity with us and what we were trying to do for others with their needs.” Sic Psycles Club President Allen “Kozy” Kozakobsky shared that the club had been established 11 years ago with the intent of reaching out to help others in need. “We roll around and do what we

do,” he said, “we go everywhere and help where we can.” The club has done Cancer Runs for children in need. They held an event to support the victims of the terrorist attack in San Bernardino and they held a backpack drive for kids in Section 8 housing. And, while there are many more causes the club gets involved with, it’s clear that the members are not looking for notoriety or any kind of accolades for their efforts. “We’re just a bunch of guys who wanted to help the communities,” Kozy said, “and we all support each other.” Ruben “Bones” Ruiz Sic Psycles Vice President put it this way, “We’re able to get stuff together for people, like time, labor, food,

and organizing because we do it out of the kindness of our hearts. It’s good people pulling together.” The Holiday Turkey giveaway was held in the backyard of the Greater Faith Bible Church at 249 East Randall in Rialto. City of Rialto Councilman Rafael Trujillo stopped by to present the Sic Psycles Club with a certificate for their continued advocacy of helping with the underserved population. Greater Faith Bible Church has a food giveaway each third Saturday of the month at 8 a.m. You can find out more about them at their webpage at https://www.gfgbcrialto.org/.

s we quickly approach the holiday season organizations are preparing for turkey giveaways, toy drives and community dinners to help the underserved population. I’ve provided a list of events and opportunities to donate or volunteer at a few of the venues that have reached out to us. The Salvation Army of San Bernardino and Inland Empire Cluster Council are hosting their 2nd Annual Community Thanksgiving event and are in need of volunteers to help with food prep, setup, security, volunteer check in and clothing areas. Items needed, if you’re able to donate, include beanies and gloves (200 each), sleeping bags or blankets (200 each), travel size hygiene items, tooth brushes, feminine hygiene, new or gently used clothing and shoes. The dinner will be taking place at the Salvation Army Hospitality House, located at 925 W. 10th St. from 1 - 3 p.m. This year will be my first time to volunteer on Thanksgiving Day, and I’m looking forward to being a part of a group of people spreading the spirit of the holiday season. Before my company was closed, we held a sixty-minute press conference and posted it on you tube. The press conference spelled out in detail the most mind-numbing criminal activities of these Wall Street firms, their executives and our politicians. A second-year law student could win convictions with this information. I gave that

video to District Attorney, Michel Estrin as part of my criminal complaint. I demanded that the District Attorney hold Congressman Duncan Hunter and my Senators, Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein criminally accountable for what they have done. It is also a crime to be fully aware of these significant felonies and not report it to the authorities. Instead, District Attorney Estrin’s office refused to confirm receiving my criminal complaint and will not respond to any of my inquiries. It appears the District Attorney is more concerned about protecting or enhancing his career then protecting the residents of Riverside County. Richard Lawless Murrieta

How Medicare can help you manage pain If you have Medicare, there are covered options to help you manage pain safely and effectively. Medicare covers prescription pain medications under Part D. In addition, Medicare Part B (medical insurance) helps pay for services that may help you manage your pain with less reliance on drugs, such as: ¡ Physical therapy; ¡ Occupational therapy; ¡ Manual manipulation of the spine (when medically necessary); ¡ Behavioral health services. Part B helps pay for medically necessary outpatient physical therapy and outpatient occupational therapy. And Medicare no longer limits how much it pays for medically necessary outpatient therapy services in one calendar year, so beneficiaries can get the number of visits they need. Medicare doesn't cover other services or tests ordered by a chiropractor, including X-rays, massage therapy, and acupuncture.

with Bernie Madoff when the whistleblowers were ignored by both agencies, we were ignored. I then went to my Congressman and our two State Senators. They offered no help and refused to meet with us. To add insult to injury, my Congressman and my two Senators, now fully informed by us about the seventy-billion-dollar securities fraud, accepted large donations from these Wall Street criminals (extortion) and voted for legislation to provide legal protection to these firms (racketeering).

(If you think your chiropractor is billing Medicare for chiropractic services that aren't covered, you can report suspected Medicare fraud at https://www.medicare.gov/formshelp-resources/help-fightmedicare-fraud/how-report-medic are-fraud.) Besides a yearly depression screen, Medicare can also cover behavioral health integration services like psychiatric collaborative

care, and chronic and complex care management. Inpatient treatment and professional services can be provided by physicians, clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, nurse practitioners/specialists, and physician assistants.

For most Medicare-covered pain management services, you pay 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount for visits to your doctor or other healthcare provider to diagnose or treat your condition. The Part B deductible ($185 in 2019) applies.

Prescription opioids like hydrocodone and oxycodone can be used effectively to help relieve moderate-to-severe pain. Your doctor may prescribe opioids following surgery or an injury, or for certain chronic health conditions.

If you get your services in a hospital outpatient clinic or hospital outpatient department, you may have to pay an additional copayment or coinsurance amount to the hospital.

These medications are an important part of treatment but they carry serious risks. If you’re using opioids for chronic pain, ask your doctor if you might also need a prescription for naloxone, an overdose-reversing drug that is covered by Medicare. Before starting or while taking opioids, talk with your doctor about all of your pain treatment options. Your doctor should tailor treatment according to your personal needs. Some Medicare Part D drug plans have certain rules to help you use opioids safely. You can get more information on drug plan coverage rules at https://www.medicare.gov/drugcoverage-part-d/what-medicarepart-d-drug-plans-cover/drug-plan -coverage-rules. Last week Stadler U.S. and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority signed a milestone contract that paves the way for the first hydrogen-powered passenger train to operate in the United States.

A

contract signing Wednesday, Nov. 13 between Stadler U.S. and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) clears the way for the first hydrogen-powered passenger train to operate in the United States. The agreement marks a major milestone in bringing zero-emission passenger rail technology to the U.S. The hydrogen-powered

FLIRT H2 vehicle will be introduced in 2024 as part of the Redlands Passenger Rail Project, a nine-mile connector between Redlands and San Bernardino’s Metrolink station. Under the agreement, Stadler will develop the first hydrogenpowered train. The ordered vehicle consists of two cars with a power pack in between that holds the fuel cells and hydrogen tanks.

The train is expected to seat 108 passengers in addition to generous standing room. The FLIRT H2 is projected to transport passengers at a maximum speed of up to 79 mph (130 km/h). The predicted delivery will be in 2023; the train is scheduled to enter passenger service in 2024.

Words to Think About: Culture of Pover ty A major change should be to finish school: High School, or college or a Trade School. I know of many individuals that became carpenters, electricians, computer science, plumbers, secretaries, medical assistants, chefs, etc.

have been asked by Danny Carrasco to write an article on the topic, “The Culture of Poverty.” My interest is because it is very personal.

A few years ago, I lost my job as a minister of a church. The hierarchy felt I was not supportive of the fundamentalist viewpoint. Which I was. I was without a job, married with two children. My choices were limited. So, I started selling insurance, pensions and medical insurance.

My memory in retrospect is that I was born in poverty and I lived in poverty. We lived in the poor section of town: we never owned a home; we lived in rented houses; we never owned a car; we always walked everywhere we went or rode the street cars.

I was good at it. Then, while selling, I went back to school and earned a Ph.D. I also became a hypnotist and a Biofeedback Technician. Believe it or not I had a percentage of 92% of people that quit smoking because I hypnotized them.

I wore patched clothes, half soled shoes, darned socks. My assessment of poverty is personal. Are my clothes hand-me-downs, do I have enough to eat, do I have a job, can I retire without a pension, am I sickly, unable to pay for medicine, on and on.

Out of the blue, a church opened up and I accepted and spent 22 years as the Senior Minister.

G. W. Abersold, Ph.D.

It seems there are two options in dealing with poverty. Number one, ACCEPT where you are and do nothing. Number two is to get out of it. Develop a skill, anything if even digging ditches.

Since retirement, I’ve published 25 books and write articles for several newspapers. My philosophy is in one of my books, “Always have a ‘marketable skill.’” Poverty is never acceptable. There is an attitude that is absolutely essential. NEVER Quit. Life is made up of positive experiences and negative situations.

Cardiologists use nation’s fir st alter native access point for hear t device to save a veteran

I

n a first of its kind in the United States, cardiologists at Loma Linda University International Heart Institute have performed a pioneering coronary intervention with an Impella heart assist device and stent placement through single access from the axillary artery in the shoulder. The new procedure offers surgeons another option to help save the lives of people suffering from severely calcified coronary heart disease, which kills more than 370,000 Americans every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Seventy-year-old Vietnam veteran David Quiett presented at Loma Linda University Medical Center with a heart attack. Physi-

cians quickly learned that he had severely calcified coronary artery disease in his major arteries. He was in need of stents and a heartsaving pumping device. But surgeons were unable to insert both interventions in separate vascular entry points because of the patient’s calcification. The pumping device is usually inserted through the femoral artery near the groin, and stents are placed through a separate artery.

Due to the patient’s condition, there were no viable traditional arterial access points. With no options left, Loma Linda University Heart Institute interventional cardiologist Aditya Bharadwaj, MD, used the axillary artery — a major artery in the shoulder — to install

the stents and the pumping device. But this involved risks because working with arteries near the neck creates a greater risk of stroke.

Quiett and his wife Ann are grateful for the expertise and care they received at Loma Linda University International Heart Institute.

Bharadwaj said the success of the procedure opens the door for patients around the country to have more viable cardiovascular intervention surgeries.

“I am grateful the ambulance took my husband to Loma Linda University Medical Center because they are the poster child of what a hospital should be, from care to expertise,” Ann said.

“Physicians have conducted single-access procedures through the femoral artery near the groin but never through the axillary artery,” Bharadwaj said. “In this day and age, nearly any challenge can be overcome. Patients who are not eligible for bypass or stents will now have more options.”

“They saved my husband’s life.”

Quiett was up walking several hours following the procedure, talking, eating and even gave his surgeon a thumbs up. He was safely discharged two days later. For more information about the International Heart Institute and all they have to offer, visit their website.

Activist discusses the issues of using Native American mascots

Y

ou and your pets are invited to our Annual Santa Paws Pet Photos & Holiday Boutique on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley (374 W. Orange Show Road, San Bernardino).

Teters’ talk was co-sponsored by CSUSB’s Native American Speaker Series in celebration of Native American Heritage Month and was held at the university’s Santos Manuel Student Union. Teters discussed the harm that comes with stereotypes and how Native nations must compete with mass media imagery, such as Disney and the military’s use of their historical heroes as code for the country’s enemies. “There are more than 500 Indian nations within the United States,” Teters said. “We all have our rich history, language and culture. To turn us into stereotypes is to stop seeing us as individuals and traps us in someone else’s mistaken idea of who they think we are. These images are so powerful that non-Indian people do not see us as modern people with a valued history, a living culture and language, and a future.” Teters also discussed the issues that come with organizations using Native Americans as mascots, particularly schools, which then graduate people who go on to become teachers, judges, governors and presidents who impact Native communities no matter where they live.

Native American activist, artist, educator and lecturer Charlene Teters spoke at Cal State San Bernardino on Nov. 12 “When school teams use us as mascots, it goes against education’s highest goals. Teach history. Not reinforce stereotypes of any people,” she said. “Racial stereotypes dehumanize. Period.”

Teters established the Racial Justice Office at the National Congress of American Indians and is a founding board member of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and the Media (NCRSM). The television documentary “In Whose Honor?” focuses on her efforts involving the University of Illinois, its mascot and accompanying issues of racism, stereotypes, minority representation and the effect of mass media imagery. Teters has held solo exhibitions of her work since 1992. She was the first artist-in-residence at the

American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Her awards include the Allen House Memorial Award / New Mexico Governors Award, Person of the Week in 1997 for ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings and the Chalmers Memorial Award from the American Civil Liberties Union. The award-winning documentary by Jay Rosenstein, “In Whose Honor?” provides a history of her work. She is academic dean at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), and has held positions at the Ohio State University and as the Hugh O.
