The Eisenhower Eagles ended its spectacular season that clinched them a CIF Title after 25 years, when it lost to Kaiser 40 - 48 last Saturday. By David Phillips

E

isenhower coming off an amazing run in the CIF Southern Section playoffs had one more team to conquer Saturday night, Dec. 1.

Coming off a CIF Southern Section title win against the Highland Bulldogs the team now had to put that behind them and focus on another big game. On yet another cold night these two CIF champs took to the field.

It was clear early on that Eisenhower had their hands full with the D8 CIF Champion Kaiser Cats. Kaiser had a beast of a Running Back that accounted for all of Kaiser High School's seven touchdowns - Christian Hunter. Eisenhower seemed to

struggle to stop the 6' 190-pound Senior as he sliced his way through the defense with some well done blocking. The Eagles had some amazing Eagles, cont. on next page

Trujillo, who represents the Fifth Supervisorial District, replaces Kareem Gongora of Fontana, who served as chair of the organization for the past two years. In addition, Chuck Christie of Yucaipa was elected vice-chair of the County Committee. He represents the Third Supervisorial District.

The 11-member County Committee deals with school district organization issues, including number of trustees, trustee and school district boundary areas, and unification. all the data and found monumental results. “We had 129 students who achieved that goal. Each were given the opportunity to attend the trip for free; we provided tickets and bus arrangements,” continued Husbands. Students were excused from class for the day and previous Dollahan Eementary School students who are now in middle school, were contacted and also excused from school for the day. “At Legoland we participated in team based activities and a workshop. Then after, students had the opportunity to explore the theme

park,” said Husbands. He said what the school wants to see is progress in performance in everyday activities during the school year. “We provided an incentive, because state testing is strenuous. To motivate the students to persevere...they assess for eight days in a row; four days for language and four for math,” Husbands said. He says the school plans to give the same type of incentive to students when next year’s testing rolls around during late April 2019. “The students loved the incentive. They were very happy and expressed a lot of gratitude for having the opportunity,” concluded Husbands.

Columbia Steel, operating in Rialto for 34 years, wants to give back to the community over the holidays. The leadership of both Columbia Steel, Inc. and Theisen Steel, Inc.: Gus Theisen, Sally Cragun-Hernandez, Jon Ryther, Francisco Ibanez, Scott Mazo and Jason Beadel (standing in for Joey Gardner) presented a donation of various non-perishable food items as well as two checks - one from Columbia Steel for $750, and one from Theisen Steel for $750 to Sunrise Church. It was a welcomed surprise to Pastor Cliff, Linda Ellison and Pastor David Gomez. The food was used to help with an upcoming food drive that Sunrise Church was hosting for the homeless. Columbia Steel will adopt five families from the community to give a helping hand this season by providing food, clothing and gifts, which is aligned with its philosophy of having a powerful and positive impact on the surrounding community.

A majority of the scoring and heavy load was on the backs of the team's key go-to players Joel Ayala, Jordan Goodloe and Cesar Ayala. Eisenhower relied on a combination of ground and air assaults to push their offense down the field. Kaiser on the other hand used a powerful and effective running game that had Eisenhower scratching their heads.

Kaiser short of a 1st down, but Davyon Benton was called for a facemask giving Kaiser a new set of downs and sealing Eisenhower's fate. Coach Alvin Brown said one of the reasons this game was so hard was because they got away from the game plan that worked so well over the last 13 games, they were looking to Sacramento and the finals rather than going 1-0 each week. Kaiser Coach Bill Cardosi, when asked how he felt after this win, replied “exhausted”. Coach Cardosi has a connection to Eisenhower as his father was Ronnie Lott's basketball coach. Coach Cardosi credits the win to “outstanding student athletes and stuck to the game plan and came out victorious”.

Christmas tradition continues at LifeHouse Theater as the audience favorite “A Christmas Song in My Heart” returns for its fourth year with more new surprises and a new Christmas carol to relate to audiences. The production is part of the Sunday Night Special series. The stories behind some of the greatest Christmas carols are re-

vealed through the lovably eccentric Mr. Hymnody. A broken promise of marriage, an organ damaged by mice, the death of an American president, a drinking song, a famous Christmas poem, and a man’s devout patriotism have all led to the creation of beloved carols sung to this day. Audiences will enjoy the stories behind these classics and leave with a Christmas song in their heart. And this year continues the

pattern of new tales of carols being added to the production, ensuring a fun experience for all with new surprises. Audiences are encouraged to join in singing these cherished carols with the cast after each tale is told. “A Christmas Song In My Heart” will be presented for two nights only, Sunday, December 9 and 16 at 7:00 PM. Advance ticket prices are $16 for adults and $9 for chil-

Marc Steinorth Former 40th District Assemblyman

T

oday (Nov. 30) marks my final day serving the constituents of the 40th Assembly District in this direct capacity. However, my eagerness to be engaged with our community will never be finished. It has truly been the greatest privilege of my life to represent our community in the California State Legislature and I am grateful for everything we have accomplished. We worked extremely hard and never lost sight of our end goal to better the lives of every Californian. In these four years alone, I voted 6,165 times and I never took that responsibility lightly. We took hundreds of meetings with stakeholders and constituents, created advisory groups with key community leaders, and showed up in every corner of the district to make sure each voice was heard. As Chair of the Inland Empire Caucus, we fought tooth and nail to bring more resources back to our communities. The Inland Empire has historically been a donor region, giving more in taxes than we have ever received back in state funding. This year, we changed that narrative when we brought $300 million to the 40th Assembly District for funding to fix crumbling roads and reduce traffic congestion; specifically, $60 million went directly to the City of Rancho Cucamonga for a grade separation project off of

Etiwanda Avenue. We worked with our district-based businesses to make sure they had a fair shot competing in California’s not-sofriendly business climate. For example, we passed legislation to keep California’s last remaining steel mill, Gerdau, operational right here, in Rancho Cucamonga. We fought against dangerous public safety measures that are harming our most vulnerable communities in San Bernardino, and equipped our neighbors with the tools to keep them safe, like active shooter training and women’s self-defense classes. We honored hundreds of businesses, non-profits, and outstanding neighbors in our community, including dedicating a portion of the 15 freeway in memory of our local heroes, deputies Ronald Wayne Ives and Daniel Jess Lobo Jr. In Redlands, we made sure to keep projects on track by creating a dialogue between Caltrans and local businesses to ensure expedited infrastructure construction. We sponsored the adoptions of over 800 animals from our local shelters and brought humane protections to animals by allowing a bystander to responsibly break into a hot car to save a pet in distress. We even brought broadband internet to Lytle Creek with the help of Frontier Communications. To be honest, this is just a snapshot of the work we did over the past four years. If I’ve learned anything in my time of service thus far, it is the power of kindness. Be kind to one another and lead with integrity. Don’t let politics get in the way of our humanity and the true needs of our communities. We may come from different vantage points, but we all want the same thing: a better California. People ask why I gave up this position and opted to retire, but I can only think about what I have gained. I have gained so much from my experiences, and more importantly more time with my family and my community. Thank you for the honor and opportunity to serve. I will treasure this experience for a lifetime.

George H. W. Bush’s final words

he final words of President George H. W. Bush tell us a lot about the kind of man he was, and especially the kind of father he was.

heard was that he had been a wonderful father. It was fitting that the oldest Bush child, now the family patriarch, would express that sentiment for the family.

At 94 years old and ailing from Parkinson’s and the pains of old age, Bush said he was ready to go. He told his family he wanted to be with Barbara, his wife of 73 years, and Robin, the child they lost long ago to leukemia. And in a final conversation, his oldest son, George W. Bush, told him he had been a “wonderful father. His father’s reply—and final words— were: “I love you, too.

George W. referred to his father as “the world’s greatest dad. At the start of his Republican convention speech in Philadelphia in August 2000, in a subtle reference to President Bill Clinton allegedly calling him “daddy’s boy two days earlier, George W. looked toward his father’s seat and proclaimed before a national audience, “I am proud to be your son.

These final sentiments from Bush were touching and not surprising.

That 2000 presidential run for the younger Bush is hard to separate from his father’s 1992 presidential defeat. There had been speculation that George W. pursued the presidency in part to avenge his father’s loss in 1992, a charge that George W. disputed. Still, it had burned the younger Bush to see his father lose to a man he saw as lacking character, particularly compared to the father he held in the highest esteem. He hated to see “a good man get whipped.

The death of that little girl Robin 65 years ago was the enduring heartbreak of his and his wife’s life. As Barbara approached death last April, Robin was on her mind as well. Robin’s situation in the fall of 1953 became so acute that her parents flew her from Midland, Texas to New York’s Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center. Her mom held her hand through tears and blood transfusions. Her dad found it too hard to watch. Robin’s demise came unexpectedly quick. George H. W. was in Texas and flew all night to get there, but by the time he arrived Robin slipped into a coma. “One minute she was there, and the next she was gone,â€? remembered her mother. “I truly felt her soul go out of that beautiful little body. For one last time I combed her hair, and we held our precious little girl. I never felt the presence of God more strongly than at that moment.â€? George H. W. Bush said he “learned the true meaning of grief when Robin died.â€? Though he firmly believed she was “in God’s loving arms,â€? the pain never went away. Asked in 1999 by Larry King how long it hurt, the former president said, “We hurt now.â€? Five years after Robin’s death, George H. W. wrote a letter to his mother. It was a sort of poem, with a dozen lines that began, “We need‌.â€? The concluding line lamented: “We need a girl.â€? In his final moments, George H. W. Bush was thinking about reunification with that three-yearold girl. Also poignant was the fact that the parting words the elder Bush

As for the younger Bush defeating Bill Clinton’s vice president, Al Gore, in 2000, the senior Bush would savor the irony: “You ever heard the expression, ‘The Lord works in mysterious ways?’ George H. W. Bush said in Erie, Pennsylvania in June 2004. “We had that [happen] in our family all the time, even with some bad things.... And if I’d had won that election in 1992, my oldest son would not be president of the United States of America. With his voice crackling with emotion, the proud father concluded: “So, what more can a dad ask? I think the Lord works in mysterious ways.

The son never forgot a moment in the 1960s while an undergrad at Yale struggling with the day’s events and finding purpose in life. His father suggested he visit Yale’s famous (leftist) chaplain William Sloane Coffin. Bush had questions about the Vietnam War and upheaval all around him. According to Bush, not only was Coffin unhelpful but insulted his father. Bush’s father had just lost a close Texas race for the U.S. Senate to a Democrat named Ralph Yarborough. “Your father lost to a better man, Bush remembers Coffin remarking. Coffin would later say he had no recollection of that conversation. It’s hard to imagine it didn’t happen, however, because Bush was so angry that he told his parents right away. His mother said the comment was “shattering to him. “It was a very awful thing for a chaplain to say to a freshman at college, said Barbara, “particularly if he might have wanted to have seen him in church. I’m not sure that George ever put his foot again [in the college chapel]. Regardless of what exactly happened with Coffin, the takeaway is this: George W. Bush considered his father his “hero. And he certainly wasn’t the only Bush child that felt that way. And for a dad, even one of so many great achievements, that’s a pretty good way to go. —Dr. Paul Kengor is professor of political science and executive director of The Center for Vision & Values at Grove City College. his is the first of a series of articles about the Central American countries. The current problems involving the caravan and the border between Mexico and the United States is my motivation. The invasion is caused by poverty, violence and historical precedence. To clarify the situation, I will draw a parallel between the histories of the United States and the Central American countries. Those countries are: Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Belize and Panama. In 1500 A.D. Tenochtitlan was the greatest city in the world. Larger than Rome or Paris. It was the center of the Aztec world. It was invaded by Hernan Cortes in 1512. Sponsored by Spain, it was destroyed. The purpose was to enslave the people and to gain silver and gold. Jamestown was settled in 1607 and Plymouth in 1620 when the

What do we know about the Mexicans? Historians and anthropologists chronicle their origin at about 20,000 years ago. Artifacts indicate the first people came from one or more of three places: from Asia, across the Aleutians, and down through North America to Mexico; or from Polynesia, across the Pacific Ocean; or from Africa. The Olmecs in particular have very Negroid features. The book, “They Came Before Columbus,” by Ivan Van Sertima supports the latter view. The Olmecs were the first organized group and developed a highly structured society around 1,000 B.C. There are remnants of their existence all over Mexico. Other Indian groups were the Toltecs, Mixtecs and Zapatecs. However, the major ones in the pre-Cortes time were the Mayans and the Aztecs. The Mayans circulated primarily in southern Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. Their major ruins are at Palenque, Bonampac, Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Coba and Tulum. There is evidence they had ties with the Incas. They developed the concept of zero, plotted the solar system and predicted eclipses. They were also brutal and were very warlike.

The most important influence of all was from the Aztecs. To get a clear view of them, read Gary Jennings book, “Aztec.”

tered, leaving only one million. Talk about genocide. Many of them died from disease brought by the conquistadores.

No one knows from where they came. Some think they were Anasazis from our Southwest. They migrated to the valley of Mexico, which was a lake in the early 1300's. They were looking for an eagle on a cactus with a serpent in its beak, and supposedly found it.

The Inquisition was in full force. Converts to Christianity were forced or killed. The Aztec Temples were torn down and Cathedrals were built on the same spot with stones from the Temples.

In 1325 the city of Tenochtitlan was founded. It ultimately became twice the size of the largest city in Europe. Huge Temples were built and the city was well organized. The Aztecs captured almost all the people of Mexico, who paid taxes to them. They were brutal, skinning their victims and cutting out their hearts - and eating them. Virgins were sacrificed to the gods. Then came Cortes in 1519. At that time there were 25 million people in Mexico. That’s right, twenty-five million. By the year 1600, 24 million had been slaugh-

he Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino were informed by Minor League Baseball (MILB) on Monday that they have been named one of five finalists for the 2018 Copa de la Diversion (Fun Cup) Hispanic/Latinx Outreach Initiative. As part of the Copa de la Diversion promotion, MILB teams were given the opportunity to rebrand and promote with a new Hispanic/Latinx themed identity, and the 66ers transformation was named one of the nation’s best as the club morphed into Los Cucuys de San Bernardino on selected dates throughout the 2018 campaign. The Inland Empire club, Advanced-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, decided that its mascot for the Copa de la Diversion would be their take on the infamous Cucuy that is often referenced in Hispanic/Latinx popular culture and would be a rough equivalent to the “Bogey Man” in the United States. The fanged mascot was an instant hit with fans with merchandise featuring El Cucuy being purchased from around the country. The Los Cucuys promotion was run at San Manuel Stadium every Thursday home game from May through August and the club saw an increase in overall attendance on those days; the initial Cucuys date of May 3rd witnessed a massive

crowd of 6,887 fans (an increase of 252% from the first Thursday in May of 2017). The rebrand of the team was a part of the club’s efforts in fan engagement. The team emphasized Hispanic culture by partnering with local heritage groups, as well as bringing in entertainment for pre-game and in-game activities from folklorico dancers and mariachi groups. San Manuel Stadium also featured live Spanish-language interviews with ballplayers from Hispanic/Latinx countries on the field and recorded segments on the team’s video board. As mentioned, Los Cucuys were one of five finalists for the Copa out of 33 clubs chosen to participate. Of the five finalists, Los Cucuys, Monarcas de Eugene (OR) and Flying Chanclas de San Antonio are all members of the Elmore Sports Group, an ownership group that was recently named MILB

Organization of the Year by Ballpark Digest. “Los Cucuys de San Bernardino has been one of the most fun promotions we’ve been a part of,” Inland Empire 66ers/Los Cucuys de San Bernardino General Manager Joe Hudson said. “We stress inclusiveness at our ballpark, but this was a way to put that at the forefront and truly celebrate our diverse community. To be nominated as one of five teams to rise up to the challenge is gratifying for us locally but also a testament to the desire for everyone to be represented in the game of baseball.” The selection for the Copa de la Diversion winner will take place on December 10th in Las Vegas at the annual Professional Baseball Winter Meetings. For more information please call 909-888-9922 or visit www.66ers.com.

The lakes and waterways were filled in and Mexico City is the result. Only the Xochimilcan remains as a remnant of the earliest Aztec city. It is still a tourist attraction. Many Mexicans led the fight for freedom from France and Spain. The primary ones were Don Miguel Hidalgo and Benito Juarez. It began on September 15, 1810 with Hidalgo’s “Grito de Dolores.” He was executed in 1811. The Abraham Lincoln of Mexico was Juarez a Zapotec Indian. He became president in 1858 and started most of the reforms.

If you travel much in Mexico or want to know more about the people, read Octavio Paz’s book, “Labyrinth of Solitude.” Mexico has many problems. Their economy is pitiful. Fifty percent of the people are under 21 years of age. Other countries, including the United States control most of the business. The drug trade is rampant. There is corruption in almost every area of government. Their President hopes to change that. Fifty percent of the people live in poverty. Medical care is poor and pension plans are unheard of. It is a Catholic country but church attendance is sparse. Most Mexicans go to church only for baptism, weddings and funerals. I’ve been there scores of times and gone to church many, many times. The pollution in Mexico City is horrible. It is also the highest populated city in the world, with over 30 million. In spite of its problems, the country is exciting and beautiful. There are vacation spots like no other in the world. Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Huatulco, Acapulco, Mazatlán and dozens of others can’t be beat.

The people are friendly, their food is unbelievably good, the music is exciting and the countryside is unimaginably beautiful. Patzcuaro and Oaxaca are my favorite cities. By 1600 a new race was dominant. Mestizos. A mixture of Indians and Europeans. The destiny of the eight countries was forever changed. TO BE CONTINUED.

During the organizational session for the 2019-2020 Legislative session, second term Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes (DSan Bernardino) introduced AB 6 which creates an Office of Early Childhood Education (Office) tasked with implementing and overseeing early childhood education programming to unify statewide policies and procedures necessary to achieve a universal childhood education program. AB 6 is the first bill in a package of legislation planned for introduction by Assemblymember Reyes to expand early education opportunities and provide more childcare for working families. “Strategies and efforts to provide early childhood development for all children will lead to numerous long-term benefits for the future of California,” said Assemblymember Reyes. “Investing in childhood development as early as possible

encourages positive behavioral and educational outcomes for children and has shown to reduce social costs such as poor heath, dropout rates, poverty and crime. We must address the needs of children early in their lives with preventative strategies, rather than our existing system of crisis management.” The Office created by AB 6 will coordinate between the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) and the California Department of Health and Human Services (CDHHS) to ensure appropriate services for students in child care and preschool settings. Lastly, the Office will oversee and standardize curriculum for these programs and ensure workforce development falls in line with Legislative goals and standards.

Promi se Scholar s receives $200,000 g rant from Bank of America to impr ove educational outcomes and economic potential for Inland Empire youth

P

romise Scholars has been named the 2018 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders® award recipient for the Inland Empire. The nonprofit is being recognized for its work to provide students with attainable pathways to higher education. As part of the award, Promise Scholars will receive $200,000 in unrestricted grant funding to pilot a new Community College Ambassador program aimed at helping students in the Ontario-Montclair School District and their families navigate applying and acclimating to colleges located throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

sources that support, educate and inspire students from kindergarten through grade twelve to pursue higher education. With the cost of college being the biggest barrier to many students pursuing a college degree, Promise Scholars’ curriculum focuses heavily on understanding the complex application process and the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Studies show that 90% of students who complete the federal student aid application process, FASFA, go on to college. Promise Scholars has increased the school district’s FASFA completion rate from 32% to 58%, far outpacing the completion rates in neighboring districts.

According to US Census data, nearly half (46%) of adults in the Inland Empire have no postsecondary education and 25% of the region’s adults have started, but have not completed college. These numbers are further magnified in the Ontario-Montclair School District where only 6% of parents have college degrees and 30% did not complete high school. Without understanding the college ecosystem from a young age, insight into the admission process or a parent to guide them, few students or their families consider college an option. This puts firstgeneration students at a higher risk of being admitted to college but never showing up or dropping out after their freshman year.

Promise Scholars’ impact can be seen in campus partnerships across the region, including: Cal State San Bernardino, University of Redlands, Riverside City College, Moreno Valley College, Cal Poly, Mt. San Antonio College, Chaffey College, University of La Verne, and many others. This Neighborhood Builder grant will allow Promise Scholars to further expand its college campus programs acclimating incoming participant freshman through the creation of a new College Ambassador program.

needed, programs like Promise Scholars can help ensure that no student is left behind in the region’s exciting economic future,” said Al Arguello, Inland Empire Market President, Bank of America. “This program is a model for private sector, community stakeholders, educators and parents working together creating a pathway to success for our youth and our economy.” “At Promise Scholars we truly believe that to fully unlock the potential of our community we must unlock the potential of all children in the community,” said Kristine Scott, Board President, OntarioMontclair Schools Foundation. “To do this we bring everyone together—students, parents, educa-

tors, businesses, and local leaders—to introduce kids early on to the opportunities available after high school and make sure they get on the education pathway to achieve their goals.” “We must actively reach out to all students and their families early and often enough to instill the value of education after high school,” said Elvia M. Rivas, Board President, Ontario-Montclair School District. “Promise Scholars does this and makes sure all students have a plan and more importantly that they have support along each transition from elementary to secondary to college.” As a Neighborhood Builder awardee, Promise Scholars will

also receive a year of leadership training for the Executive Director and an emerging leader at the organization, access to a network of peer organizations across the U.S., and the opportunity to access additional capital to expand their impact. Over the course of Neighborhood Builders’ 15 years, Bank of America has partnered with 21 nonprofits in the Inland Empire, investing $4.2 million to help address issues fundamental to improving economic mobility for individuals and families, such as workforce development, community development and basic needs.

P

atients at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital created and decorated a gingerbread village, filling the hospital lobby with holiday cheer on Monday, Dec. 3. Patients were provided with prebuilt gingerbread houses, colorful icing and goodies of all kinds and were encouraged to use their imaginations while they decorated. Those patients who were unable to leave their units were given their own personal gingerbread kits to decorate in their rooms. The annual event is made possible by the Big Hearts for Little Hearts Loma Linda Guild, along

with the generosity of Costco Wholesale, which donated 130 gingerbread house kits; Walmart Neighborhood Markets, which donated candy and an additional 25 gingerbread houses; and Alta Vista Credit Union, which donated stuffed animals for the event. Children’s Hospital patient Joseph Perlman, 16, from Victorville was happy for the change of scenery and spent several hours intricately decorating his gingerbread house. “It’s boring and depressing being stuck in your room for hours, so I’m glad for something to do,” Perlman said. “This is the first time I’ve ever decorated

a gingerbread house. I actually had fun.” Lauren Weeks, Mrs. International 2018, and members of the Loma Linda Fire Department brought extra smiles to the faces of patients by visiting with them, taking photos with them and helping them decorate their gingerbread houses. Patients also had the opportunity to take a picture with Santa and their completed gingerbread house. After the photo op, they each received a stuffed animal, and their gingerbread masterpiece was put on view in a colorful, festive display.
