A ACNE PAPER

This is a magazine with an emphasize on sophistication that combines new with old, and a high focus on art. The visual aesthetics is a combination of portraits and fashion editorials that is displayed in a typical Nordic minimalism, where it also has a great way to portray the images in an artistic and historical way yet contemporary. In the layout we play with the texture and size of the fonts and normally of black and white colors. The Fashion editorial in this magazine is based from a musical named The Rocky Horror Picture show. What will be seen is a reflection of a personal point of view on stereotypes depicted in the movie. Where the female gender will be identified in two different ways, which is very feminine and then more masculine. Showcase that one person actually can have the act of both stereotypes which as a female be able to display vulnerability, weakness, sensitivity and softness whilst with masculine traits present confidence, strength and hardness. Therefore, the aim of this fashion portfolio is to be able to contemplate upon the gender roles society has and whether or not the norms are necessary since one person can supposedly be identified with both genders.

Hat by Vera Wang, Vintage blazer by Armani, Dress by Valentino

The Rocky Horror Show clearly indicates on gender norms within the society especially the rarity of sexual freedom for women and transsexual people during the decade the movie was created, the norms remains even today but not to the same extent. The concept for this fashion editorial was built out from the perceptions on how the musical divide the characters in different stereotypical roles. As for the main characters Janet and Brad whom is a very “normal couple” and do everything according to the book. Janet wants to save her virginity until she is married and appears as very prude she also has her fiancée to protect her. While Dr Frank N Furter is anything but “normal”, he is very sexual, confident and a man in women’s clothing’s which also is the complete opposite to the couple. The thought for the fashion editorial is therefore to depict these two opposite characters and showcase that one person can transform into whomever they are able to relate to, by breaking the stereotypical women in terms of androgynous where in this case shows a woman with confidence and strength who’s not afraid to be herself. The meaning with breaking stereotypes in this context is to depict that one women actually can display masculine and feminine features. Where inner emotions of each personal identity which one may decide for themselves plays a greater role. In this case it displays that one can feel to be more feminine and soft one day and then feel to show more masculinity, strength and confidence another day. It emphasizes on the fact that there is no rules that has to be chosen on who someone wants to be, identification has less to do with gender and more on own emotions and how oneself wants to be perceived in a certain period of time.

”The look was supposed to contain a combination of sexy and cool to enhance a confident style”

T

he styling for the editorial was divided in to two different concepts classic feminine and androgyny’s where the clothing inspiration stemmed from the opposite characters Janet and Dr Frank N Furter where the stylist wanted to have certain recognizable pieces to create a full look. Where the first spreads in the magazine is about femininity, the style has been using some signature items from some of the scenes with Janet such as the hat, the formal dress and blazer to create a coherent look with the location which is in a church. The decision of the hair and make-up was to contain a simple yet feminine touch, with the hair curly and down and the make up with focus on the lashes with a pink/red lipstick and pink blush to maintain a girly approach.

The second look is less formal but still emphasize on femininity where the aim was to have a pink dress with a thin jacket on. The make-up is the same but minus the lipstick to enhance an even more natural look since the location differs as well, the third style is supposed to show a more vulnerable and prude look and represents Janet when she has entered the house of horror and the characters has undressed her to showcase a more sensitive and vulnerable side yet more artistic to match the publication of Acne Paper. While the masculine style where to resemblance Dr Frank N Furter and the inspiration of the look has been from androgyny’s editorials icons such as Grace Jones and the musical’s main character. The look was supposed to contain a combination of sexy and cool to enhance a confident style, while the make-up is natural with a purple lipstick with the hair tightly up in a bun to create a feeling of short hair rather than long.

REFLECTIVE VULNERBILITY Underskirt and bra by La Perla

The process of styling for the shoot was to show the extreme comparisons of masculine and feminine acts. These concepts were to be transmitted with a minimalistic aesthetics. The clothes chosen was based from norms associated with these gender roles from colors to the garment pieces and hair styling. Therefore, the decision for what a women would wear was mainly taken from general characteristics such as skirts, dresses and the pink colors just to enhance the feeling of the contrasts. While the opposite characteristics was decided to be more dark yet tight fitted to remain a cool style while also the intentions to have the hair back slicked to make it look like the model had short cut hair. The ideas has mainly been taken from previous androgynous images such as the editorial of Elle Germany (2015) photographed by Jimmy Backius and feminine fashion editorial but also from The rocky horror picture show. The photoshoot took approximately 6 hours due to the changes of locations but also the fittings which most of them had been done before the day of the photoshoot.
