IEEE PNEC organized the 2nd Karachi Section Student/GOLD/WIE Congress on 4th October 2012. The idea behind this congress was to bring together students from all branches of IEEE Karachi section in order to present their research, share their experiences, learn about current developments, interact with other student, gather and discuss innovative ideas and also bring up their problems. The Congress was planned and organized with all of the zeal and zest we could muster in it. The preparation for this mega had been going on for about a month. Publicity was being done on Facebook, of icial page shared & build up so that the word gets out loud enough for all to know that this event is happening. The Congress consisted of different competitions and seminars of which some were carried out simultaneously. Cant seem to think of anything to put here

The day of icially commenced with a welcome address from Onib Nasir, Chairman IEEE PNEC and a brief introduction about our university as well as our society by the host. After which the participants of the ethics competition and the poster design were ushered to the venues where their respective competitions were being held.

The ethics competition kicked off at 1600 hours.
On the other hand at the poster design competition, teams from various universities participated with great enthusiasm here too. A similar scenario was observed in terms of the registration and entry of the teams. A total of eleven teams competed. Each team consisted of three members & was provided with the paints, colors and pastels. The theme of designing the poster was ‘Advancing technology for humanity’.
The teams were a given ninety minutes time to go through the scenario they were given in the form of a case study and prepare a presentation. Almost all of the teams were very competent and efficient and could be seen deeply immersed ad earnestly immersed in their work as soon as the clock started ticking. Their ninety minutes finished at 1730 and after a fifteen minutes break the judges arrived and the participant teams were called one by one to present their work. The panel of judges consisted of three distinguished personalities from their respective fields. They were:
There was a fusion of art and faux-pas on the posters that were being made. The teams had a time of ninety minutes here which was quite nerve wracking for them. The atmosphere was light and fun but competitive nevertheless.
1. Miss Sadia Kazmi - Head of Industry Automation, Siemens At the end of the ninety minutes, the posters were Pakistan collected and put up for every one at the congress 2. Miss Maheen Baber - HR Manager, Wavetec Ltd. to see. 3. Mr. Bilal Khan - HR Manager, Pakistan Petroleum Ltd. The results of the poster designing were also going to be announced at the end of the congress.
All the teams presented very well and held up their arguments.
Workshops
Website for Dummies A workshop titled ‘Website for Dummies’ was conducted by Mr. Zain Gill, IEEE PNEC Vice Chair and the person solely responsible for the IEEE PNEC website. The workshop was on creating and maintaining a website. It covered a tutorial on how to create a website from scratch. The lecture was aimed at people with little or no knowledge about website hosting. It provided them very basic knowledge of how can you start off with any website and make it running. Zain Gill emphasized on why its absolutely vital to have a website in the current day and age and highlighted the outrageously low amount of participations in the R10 website competition. 2

Maximizing your IEEE Membership Rabia Khalid and Hassaan Idrees, both very well-known and recent graduates of PNEC held the audiences’ interest by having a lively dialogue based session. In the session these alumni discussed about their PNEC days and the role IEEE played in it. Being the forerunners and very active members of the society, they were able to bring a very bright image of IEEE in front of the audience. They also entertained questions from the audience and answered them in detail, with the aim of clarifying any misconceptions regarding IEEE memberships. At the end of this session they were able to increase awareness and eliminate the misconceptions regarding IEEE and being an active participant in it.
Self Assessing Our Skills Mr. Shahbaz Islam, DGM HR & OD SSGC, is a very diverse and expert trainer. The topic of his session was ‘Self assessing our Skills’. The theme was as to how to monitor and evaluate your own self and self-assessment of your skills. The session couldn’t have been more engrossing with all the jokes and laughs the presenter cracked at the future engineers, he addressed some really important issues regarding self-assessment and succeeding evaluating one’s own self. His presentation consisted of very main stream examples and phenomenon from our surrounding to whom all of us could relate. He played with the audience’s minds all along and kept them captivated. Mr. Shahbaz Islam pointed out that the secret to excellence is being able to criticize your own skills and work them out. All in all it was a very interesting and interactive session and left the students with very much to think about.
The importance of entrepreneurship and the Pakistani student — Panel Discussion The panel discussion was on “The importance of entrepreneurship and the Pakistani student”. Mr. Hassaan Idrees was the moderator. Seated next to him on stage were, Mr. Ali Allawala who is HR Manager at P&G, Mr Mobeen Rafiq who is a well seasoned entrepreneur having started many ventures, Ms. Eram Abbassi, who is a teacher at Bahria University and SZABIST and Ayesha Akram, who is a studying MBA at IBA. The presence of panelist from all age groups ensured that a lively discussion ensued. Hassaan Idrees got the discussion started by presenting an overview of the current scenario. Mr. Ali Allawala voiced his opinions and spoke about his experience in the engineering-entrepreneurship field. He talked about how class room learning was very much applicable to real life situations. Mr. Mobeen Rafiq talked about how the engineering world was contributing to poverty alleviation and gave examples of some of his own initiatives. Ayesha Akram was of the opinion that a lot engineering students were coming into the business side and were making quite successful careers out of it. Ms. Eram Abbassi talked about the in grown talent and the potential that Pakistan possesses and what this talent could achieve if applied in the correct manner. She talked about her research on rising trends in careers that started off with engineering and ended up with entrepreneurship. The panel discussion was then wrapped up by Hassan’s conclusion. The audience was very engaged and listened to the discussion with a lot of interest. 3

Karachi Section Recognition Awards This was the most eagerly awaited part of KSSC’12 by far. In the Awards Distribution ceremony participants, belonging from the various Student Branches attending the Congress, were seen enthusiastically anticipating the results of the KSSC’12 Recognition Awards. As expected, on the announcement of every award, the audience would cheer and applaud fervently. Honored guest, Mr. Shahab Siddique (Secretary IEEE Karachi Section) was invited onto the stage to give out the awards to the respective winners. The ceremony started off with the announcement of the result of the Ethics Competition and the Poster Design Competition. Team PNEC (comprising of Salar Javaid, Saadi Aziz, Hammad Saleem and Asim Ahmed won the Ethics competition after being given a run for their money by Team PAF-KEIT. Meanwhile in the Poster Design Competition, Team MUET took away the irst prize. The awards were dominated by IEEE PNEC Student branch and not surprising then that it also won the Outstanding IEEE Student Branch Award. In the end, the Commandant PNEC, Commodore Ather Saleem, was invited to the stage to address the audience and grace the occasion as the chief guest. The congress was concluded with dinner for all, where the guests discussed their take on our event and we, the organizers took a breath of relief and congratulated ourselves upon the completion of another successful event. We thanked all for being present and for making our efforts worth it.
