Candidates Approved for 2012 IEEE Computer Society Electio LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 19 June, 2012 -- The Board of Governors has approved the slate of candidates for the IEEE Computer Society 2012 election. Dejan S. Milojicic and Donald F. Shafer will be on the ballot for 2013 President-elect and 2014 President. The President oversees the Society's programs and operations and is a nonvoting member of most Society program boards and committees. Milojicic, a senior research manager at HP Labs, is the founding editor of Computing Now. He has served on the editorial boards of IEEE Parallel & Distributed Technologies, IEEE Concurrency, IEEE Distributed Systems Online, and IEEE Internet Computing magazines. He has worked in the areas of operating systems and distributed systems for more than 20 years and is a member of the IEEE, ACM, and Usenix. Shafer, cofounder and chief technology officer of Athens Group, is a member of the Board of Governors and was a member of the 2012 Strategic Planning Subcommittee. An adjunct professor of engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, Shafer was twice treasurer of the Board of Governors and past editor in chief and chair of the IEEE Computer Society Press. He was also a contributor to the 2010 edition of the Encyclopedia of Software Engineering and is a Certified Software Development Professional. The board also approved Thomas M. Conte and Paul R. Croll as candidates for first vice president. Conte, a professor of computer science at Georgia Institute of Technology, is Vice President of Publications and served as the 2009 Awards Committee chair. Croll, a Fellow in CSC's Defense Group, is Vice President of Technical and Conference Activities and formerly chaired the Technical Council on Software Engineering and the IEEE Software and Systems Engineering Standards Committee. Candidates for second vice president are Elizabeth Burd and Paul Joannou. Burd, deputy head of faculty at Durham University, is Vice President of Educational Activities and has served on program committees for more than 20 IEEE conferences. Joannou, president and principal consultant at Axia Engineering Inc., is Vice President of the Professional Activities Board and chair of the PAB Information Technology Committee. The 12 candidates for 2013-2015 terms on the Board of Governors are:
Ann DeMarle, professor and director of Champlain College's Emergent Media Center and MFA program;
Jean-Luc Gaudiot, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at University of California, Irvine;
Harold Javid, director of Microsoft's Americas/Australia/New Zealand Regional Program;
Ronald G. Jensen, 2011 President of IEEE-USA and IBM chief engineering manager (retired); Luis Kun, professor of national security at the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies of the National Defense University;
Phillip Laplante, professor of software engineering at Penn State University;
Simon Liu, director of the US National Agriculture Laboratory and editor in chief of IT Professional;
Xun Luo, a senior research engineer at Qualcomm;
Cecilia Metra, a professor at Università di Bologna and associate editor in chief of IEEE Transactions on Computers;
Nita Patel, systems and software engineering manager at L-3 Warrior Systems, Insight Technology;
William (Bill) Pitts, a Board of Governors member;
Sattupathu V. Sankaran, Vice President of Member and Geographic Activities and a consultant with SAP Labs;
Diomidis Spinellis, a professor at Athens University of Economics and Business and IEEE Software Tools of the Trade author; and
Stefano Zanero, assistant professor at Politecnico di Milano University in Italy, and Director of the Information Systems Security Association.
The seven candidates who receive the most votes will assume seats on the board starting in January 2013. The election area of the Society's webpage and Computer's August issue will provide biographical sketches and candidate position statements for each nominee.
