Lockheed Martin Helps Reduce Employee Training Costs with IEEE Computer Society Webinars LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 16 January, 2012 — The IEEE Computer Society, the world’s leading organization of computing professionals, has signed an agreement to produce 20 webinars for Lockheed Martin Corp. through an innovative program that allows companies to meet employee training goals at a reasonable cost. The customizable program, tailored to individual companies’ needs, offers hour-long webinars that employees can attend at their convenience without leaving their desks. The targeted webinars feature Computer Society experts with deep knowledge in key technology areas, and subject areas chosen for maximum relevance to employees. “The Computer Society and Lockheed are both committed to advancing the knowledge, practice, and skills of engineering professionals. We have developed an innovative and customizable program that helps companies provide high-quality, highly targeted technology training at a reasonable cost,” said Angela Burgess, IEEE Computer Society executive director. “We look forward to helping Lockheed Martin meet its training goals for a fourth successful year.” Recent speakers for Lockheed Martin webinars have included Construx Software CEO Steve McConnell, named by Software Development magazine as one of the three most influential people in software; IBM Fellow Grady Booch, a developer of Unified Modeling Language; and James “Cope” Coplien, a partner in the Scrum Foundation and one of the founders of the software pattern discipline. “Besides providing Lockheed Martin software and systems engineers with an effective tool for learning about new systems engineering developments from industry thought leaders, researchers, and practitioners, the webinars have provided immediate benefit to employees and generated discussions about those new developments at Lockheed Martin,” said Scott LaChance, Lockheed Martin senior software engineer. Serving as moderators are Lockheed Martin Fellows such as Will Tracz and Valerie Underwood, who work with presenters to tailor the presentation for the Lockheed Martin engineering community. In addition, employees are surveyed to ensure that the webinars are meeting their training needs. In the most recent survey, more than three quarters of employees said the webinars are “very valuable” and help them keep their technical skills current and complete work activities. The webinar speakers consistently receive high marks, with more than 90 percent of employees characterizing the speakers as “knowledgeable and interesting” and more than 97 percent requesting that the webinar series be continued. The Computer Society has been providing training webinars for Lockheed Martin’s Corporate Engineering & Technology sector since 2008. Webinars in 2011 addressed systems engineering economics, requirements, test-driven development, dynamic construction, technical autonomy, software product lines, working with legacy systems, and other topics.
