{Coming together in 2022}

Finally, back in-person! 2022 marked a return to coming together in-person again, for the International Academy and a growing Membership of over 800 Members from 50 countries. After two M+ Events held online in February and March, Member events reverted to in-person for the rest of the year, allowing Academy Members and their guests to finally meet and see each other, after a long pause.

The first in-person Board & Members Meeting of the year was hosted by ZDF in Berlin, with over 100 people in attendance. Everyone was eager to finally get together to discuss ideas and meet new fellow Members from around the world. The rest of the year went back to a pre-pandemic schedule with September and November Board & Members Meetings taking place in New York.

Board & Members Meetings

Held quarterly, Board & Members Meetings are the opportunity for Members to gather, network and stay up to date on substantive topics about the media & entertainment industry. Each meeting features leading figures from all sectors of the content business. Each Member is welcome to invite one guest.

M+ Virtual

The online edition of our M+ Lounge is a virtual session designed to provide a setting for International Academy Members, and their guests, to network with one another and hear from a guest speaker or two. Each member is welcome to bring up to three industry guests to join in and network.

Academy Day

Academy Day is a high-level, membersonly 4 day event designed to shine a spotlight on the culture and media industry of a specific region and foster a better understanding of regional business models and cultural institutions to help facilitate cross border collaboration. It is a customized event hosted by an Academy Partner which offers members an exclusive opportunity to take a deep-dive into the television industry of a specific region, and network with leading executives and officials of that region. The next Academy Day, hosted by Ay Yapim, is set to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, May 31-June 3, 2023.

Our first speaker of 2022 talked about the creative and production journey behind his historical drama series Atlantic Crossing and the pressure of telling a fictionalized story inspired by true events, involving the Norwegian royal family and highprofile characters. He also touched upon how the pan Scandinavian financing and the participation of U.S. co-production partner PBS came about.

INSiDE creator, director and producer Peter Salmon gave us the story behind this short-form series conceived and produced during the pandemicincluding the technical challenges with writers and editors collaborating completely remotely. The series captured life during lockdown through the prism of the main character, Rose, an introverted germaphobe whose job at a video chat app allows her to observe people’s lives, and ends up bringing up a trauma from her past.

ZDF Berlin Bureau Chief, Theo Koll moderated a panel with German experts Christiane Hoffmann, Deputy Spokesperson for the German government; Stefan Kramer, President of the Office for Constitution Security; Peter Limbourg, Director General Deutsche Welle and Journalist Dennis Yücel. The panel discussed the conflict in Ukraine a few weeks after the beginning of the War.

Scott Roxborough, Europe Bureau Chief, The Hollywood Reporter, moderated a conversation with German; television executives Sophie Burkhardt Channel Manager Mediathek, ARD; Nico Hofmann, CEO, UFA and Oliver Schablitzki, EVP Multichannel, RTL. They discussed the streaming landscape in Germany and how it has affected the public and commercial broadcasters OTT strategies.

She also discussed the incredible power and international reach of television both for her documentary 13th and drama series When They See Us, which drove her to do even more in front and behind the camera with her company Array.
