Ierimonti Gallery is proud to present the first solo show in New York City of artist Nebojša Despotović as the inaugural exhibition of our new location at 55 Delancey Street.
What is derided from the photographs and images are the sentiments and emotions that are left behind, to be then transferred to the viewer through his codified paintings.
“Enemy who must be loved” includes a variety of his work for the American audience to view and enjoy a refreshing artist who is renowned in Italy and Europe, bridging the European and American art scenes.
The artist views painting as more than simply a medium but rather as a process which allows the paint to exist on the surface, regardless of meaning and style. The reason for this process is to give attributes of form. Through this form, Despotović gives importance to the everyday person, the one who is found at every street corner. To produce his forms he disregards the space and dimensions of the photographs and establishes his own. Despotović’s use of opaque and muted colors is vitalized through his mastery of contrast, gifting his pieces with an unexpected sense of vibrancy. By this process, the individuals portrayed in the original photographs become eternally alive, stuck in a moment of their own humanity.
Nebojša Despotović was born in 1982 in Belgrade, Serbia and currently lives in Berlin, Germany. Despotović acquired his bachelor degree from the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice and is well incorporated in the contemporary art scene in Italy and throughout Europe. Throughout his career, he has attained prestige as an artist through his many awards and accomplishments, such as the Euromobil Under 30 Prize at Art Fair in Bologna in 2012 and the Rotari Prize at ArtVerona in 2016. He is known for using old photographs as a starting point for his pictorial exploration of identity and the alterations made from paint, restoring relevance and vitality to outdated images. Despotović does not provide a new storyline, nor does he aim to fall into anachronism, he rather focuses on the individual and that specific instance. Despotović abstracts the piece to the point that it becomes applicable to everyone. As the individuals and their surroundings captured develop into less and less recognizable forms, the more engaging and charismatic the depiction becomes.
Despotović brings a new and refreshing ideology with regards to the importance of the pictorial process. This is both a demanding and exhilarating development which will allow the viewer to experience a sense of familiarity coupled with the uncanny and incomprehensible.
