THE HISTORY OF OUR NAMES BOYS

NENOS

A HISTORIA DOS NOSOS NOMES COORDINADORA: Mª Isabel Mato Torres

“Maruxa Mallo” Secondary School

This activity was carried out by all 3rd and 4th year ESO students from “Maruxa Mallo” Secondary School for the Comenius Project “Young Reporters”, 2009-2011. Most of the information was taken from different web pages, although some books were also used. Surfing the Internet and reading in English about their own names meant hard work for the students and it helped them improve their competence both in a foreign language and in the use of new technologies. Some teachers from the school have also participated, either in the name research or checking students’ final product, in English and in Galician language.

Mª Isabel Mato Torres, English teacher, author and responsible for this activity wants to thank: - Lucía Rouco Penabad, English teacher, for contributing to the success of this work. - Marisol Liste Noya, English teacher, for collaborating in the development of this research and for checking the final English version. - Alba Lorenzo Buyo: Spanish language teacher, for helping the students with this task. - Antonio Sayáns Gómez, Galician Language teacher, for revising the final Galician version. - Rosa Maceiras Miñán, Spanish Language teacher and the school Principal, for embellishing the original chart design. - All the colleagues, who kindly took part in this school task, by researching their names. - And, of course, all the students, who made this activity possible.

ORIGIN Anthony comes from the Roman family name Antonius, a name of Etruscan origin. The name "Anthony" was associated with Greek anthos "flower", which caused the addition of the h in the 17th century.

HISTORY The most notable member of the Roman family was the general Marcus Antonius who, for a period in the 1st century BC, ruled the Roman Empire jointly with Augustus. When their relationship turned sour, he and his mistress Cleopatra were attacked and forced to commit suicide, as related in Shakespeare's tragedy 'Antony and Cleopatra' (1606). The name became regularly used in the Christian world due to the fame of Saint Anthony the Great, a 3rd-century Egyptian hermit who founded Christian monasticism. Its popularity was reinforced in the Middle Ages by the 13th-century Saint Anthony of Padua, the patron saint of Portugal.

HISTORY

Saint Blaise (Armenian) was a physician, and bishop of Sebastea. According to his Acta Sanctorum, he was martyred by being beaten, attacked with iron carding combs, and beheaded. He is known as San Biagio in Italy, and San Blas in Spain. He is often shown with the instruments of his martyrdom, iron combs. He blessed throats and effected many miracles. The similarity of these instruments of torture to wool combs led to his adoption as the patron saint of woolcombers in particular, and the wool trade in general. He may also be depicted with crossed candles. Such crossed candles are used for the blessing of throats on the feast day of Blaise, which falls on 3 february, the day after Candlemas on the Roman Catholic calendar of saints. Blaise is traditionally believed to intercede in cases of throat illnesses, especially for fish-bones stuck in the throat.

ORIGIN From the Germanic name Karl, which was derived from the Common Germanic word Churl, which was used to indicate “a free man”, but not one belonging to the nobility. However, an alternative theory states that it is derived from the common Germanic element hari meaning "army, warrior".

HISTORY The popularity of the name in continental Europe was due to the fame of Charles the Great, Charlemagne, a king of the Franks who came to rule over most of Europe. It was borne by Holy Roman Emperors, kings of France, Spain, Portugal, Sweden and Hungary. The name did not become common in Britain until the 17th century when it was carried by the Stuart king Charles I. It had been introduced into the Stuart royal family by Mary Queen of Scots, who had been raised in France. Famous bearers: naturalist Charles Darwin, theory of evolution, novelist Charles Dickens, ('Great Expectations', 'A Tale of Two Cities'), French statesman Charles de Gaulle, and American cartoonist Charles Schulz, ('Peanuts' comic strip).

ORIGIN Ivan is a Slavic masculine given name, corresponding to English John. The name originates from New Testament Greek Ioannes, not from Latin Io(h)anne, which is in turn derived from Hebrew Yochanan, ‘Yahweh is gracious’.

Outros notables usuarios son: o autor ruso Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883), o psicólogo ruso Ivan Pavlov, o poeta inglés John Milton (1608 -1674), o poeta inglés John Keats, o autor americano John Steinbeck e o presidente americano asasinado John F. ORIGIN English form of the Late Latin name Iacomus, derived from Iakobos, the New Testament Greek form of the Hebrew name Ya'aqov. This was the name of two apostles, Saint James the Greater, John's brother, who was beheaded under Agrippa in the Book of Acts, and James the Lesser, son of Alphaeus. James the Just is also mentioned in the Bible as the brother of Jesus. The English names Jacob and James derive from the same source, with James coming from Latin Iacomus, a later variant of Iacobus. Unlike English, many languages do not have separate spellings for the two names.

HISTORY There are many saints called James, the most famous being the Apostle Saint James the Elder. As a common name it has many namesakes: the author James Joyce or the fictional British spy James Bond ("007"). James has been used for royalty: two Kings of England, James I + James II Six US Presidents: James Madison, James Monroe, James K. Polk, James Buchanan, James Garfield, and James "Jimmy" Carter. It is the most popular first name for US Presidents. In England, Jacob was mainly regarded as a Jewish name during the Middle Ages, though the variant James was used among Christians. Jacob came into general use as a Christian name after the Protestant Reformation.

The original place-name went through a Romance phonetic change in NavarroAragonese, a Romance language spoken in the neighbouring Romanzado since the Early Middle Ages. It was later borrowed by Castilian. This was the surname of the Jesuit priest Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552). He was a missionary to India, Japan, China, and other areas in eastern Asia, and he is the patron saint of the Orient and missionaries. His surname has since been adopted as a given name in his honour, chiefly among Catholics. When he was canonized, places and people were named after him, which popularized the name.

ORIGIN Germanic origin. It derived from liut “people” and bald “bold, brave”. Then “liut” was altered to the Latin leo “lion”. Leobalde, a village in Tordoia (Galicia) has this same origin.

HISTORY A common name among German royalty (Babenbergs–Habsburgs). Saint Leopold (Melk,1173) was a 12th-century Babenberg margrave of Austria, who is now considered the patron of that country. Called The Pious or the Brave for his exemplary Christian daily life and for his victory over a border invasion, he married the emperor Henry IV’s daughter, Agnes, and had 10 daughters and 8 sons. He founded numerous monasteries (Matiazell, Heiligenkreux, Klosterneuburg...) The name was also borne by two Habsburg Holy Roman Emperors and three kings of Belgium. Since the 19th century it has been occasionally used in England, originally in honour of Queen Victoria's uncle, a king of Belgium, after whom she named one of her sons. Its earliest form comes from the Germanic Hluot-Wig “fight undefeated, glorious and victorious”. From Latin Ludovicus, Aloysius and Greek Ludoviko also derive many of the variations.

HISTORY This was the name of 18 kings of France, starting with Louis I the son of Charlemagne, and including Louis IX (Saint Louis) who led two crusades and Louis XIV (the 'Sun King') who was the ruler of France during the height of its power, the builder of the Palace of Versailles, and the longest reigning monarch in the history of Europe. Apart from among royalty, this name was only moderately popular in France during the Middle Ages. After the French Revolution, when Louis XVI was guillotined, it became less common. The Normans brought the name to England, where it was usually spelled Lewis, though the spelling Louis has been more common in America.

A súa forma primitiva provén do xermánico Hluot-Wig ‘loitador invicto, glorioso e vitorioso’.

HISTORY This was the foretold name of the Messiah in the Old Testament. In the spelling “Manouel” it was also used in the Byzantine empire, notably by two emperors. It is possible this form of the name was transmitted to Spain and Portugal from Byzantium, since there were connections between the royal families (king Ferdinand III of Castile married Elisabeth of Hohenstaufen, who had Byzantine roots, and had a son named Manuel). The name has been used in Iberia since at least the 13th century and was borne by two kings of Portugal. It has been used in England since the 16th century in the spellings Emmanuel and Immanuel, though it was not widespread. The name has been more common in continental Europe, especially in Spain and Portugal (in the spellings Manuel and Manoel

MEANING “Who is like God?”

ORIGIN From the Hebrew name Mikha'el meaning "who is like God?". This is a rhetorical question, implying no person is like God. Biblical name derived from the elements miv meaning “who” ; el meaning “God, powerful”

HISTORY Saint Michael was one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition and the only one identified as an archangel in the Bible. In the Book of Revelation in the New Testament he is portrayed as the leader of heaven's armies, and thus is considered the patron saint of soldiers. Many saints, emperors, and kings have borne the name, and there are many variants, male and female. The popularity of the saint led to the name being used by nine Byzantine emperors, including Michael VIII Palaeologus who restored the empire in the 13th century. It has been common in Western Europe since the Middle Ages, and in England since the 12th century.

Patrick is a name derived from either the Latin name Patricius “patrician” nobleman” (a title) or from an earlier Celtic name. It was Gaelicised as Pádraic or Pádraig, and owing to the importance of Saint Patrick in Irish history, it is an especially popular name in Ireland.

HISTORY The Romans once were divided, socially and pol i ti ca l ly, i nto p lebe ian s (commoners) and patricians (aristocratics). This name was adopted in the 5thcentury by Saint Patrick. He was a Romanized Briton who was captured and enslaved in his youth by Irish raiders. After six years of servitude he escaped home, but he eventually became a bishop and went back to Ireland as a missionary. He is traditionally credited with Christianizing the island, and is regarded as Ireland's patron saint. In England and elsewhere in Europe during the Middle Ages this name was used in honour of the saint. However, it was not generally given in Ireland before the 17th century because it was considered too sacred for everyday use. It has since become very common there.

MEANING “Stone, rock”

ORIGIN Derived from the Greek Petros meaning "stone”. This is a translation used in most versions of the New Testament of the name Cephas, meaning "stone" in Aramaic, which was given to the apostle Simon by Jesus. Simon Peter was the most prominent of the apostles during Jesus's ministry and is often considered the first pope. In the Bible Jesus alluded to the meaning that Peter shall be the 'rock' on which the church would be built.

HISTORY Due to the renown of the apostle, this name became common throughout the Christian world (in various spellings). In England the Normans introduced it in the Old French form Piers, which was gradually replaced by the spelling Peter starting in the 15th century. Besides the apostle, other saints by this name include the 11th-century reformer Saint Peter Damian and the 13th-century preacher Saint Peter Martyr. It was also borne by rulers of Aragon, Portugal, and Russia, including the Russian tsar Peter the Great (1672-1725), who defeated Sweden in the Great Northern War.

SIGNIFICADO ‘Pedra, rocha’

Á parte do apóstolo, tamén levou este nome o santo reformador do século XI Saint Peter Damian e o predicador do século XIII Saint Peter Martyr.
