I NEVER MISS A BEAT WITH MY NEW HEART. D R D D
Salsa. Cha Cha. Hip Hop. Seeing Destiny on the dance floor, you wouldn’t know she received a heart transplant when she was just a few weeks old. After her birth, Destiny’s doctors gave her only two days to live. But when she came to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, we gave her a new heart. Twenty-five years ago, our heart team, led by Dr. Leonard Bailey, became the first in the world to perform infant heart transplants. Today, we’re still helping kids grow up to live their dreams, just like Destiny. lomalindakids.org

REDLANDS, WHITE AND BLUE
It’s the Inland Empire’s own slice of American Pie. It’s a city with a small town feel. It’s where you’ll find olden pleasantries mingling with modern favorites. It’s Redlands. And it’s time you explored all that it has to offer. By: Candace S. Abbott
The city of Redlands, named for adobe hued soil, provides visitors a storied past of historic railways and citrus trees. Its climate seemed suitable for citrus growth, while its location proved optimal for the newly developed Pacific Electric Railway to travel to and from bustling cities like Los Angeles and San Pedro. Into the early part of the 20th Century, Redlands was quickly developing as the city welcomed a host of roses and other foliage that spread throughout the town (and gives it the lush look we now know), the Kimberly Crest House and Gardens, the Glass Museum and the iconic Redland’s Bowl. Today the city keeps its old-school feel, but freshens it up a bit with charming markets, grade-A shopping and one stellar latte.
Baby Love Start the day off right at Kissui. Do a little guilt-free shopping for your own little ones or grab a few gifts for expecting girlfriends. Store owner and mommy of three, Laura Powers, packs her sweet boutique with some of the cutest finds around from both local and well-known labels. This January, Laura’s upping the ante with the store’s shoe selection (something Kissui is celebrated for) by becoming home to lines like Jemos and Nowali--their easy on kids developing feet and easy on mom’s croc wallet. Everything from eco-friendly toys to Oh Plah teething rings, Tea Collection infant-wear and cozy Bebe au Lait onesies to super-soft (and obscenely cute) lady bug covered baby blankets are on hand. Laura says, “I’ve tried almost everything in here, so I know what works.” An item she can’t help but show off is the Puj Tub--a revolutionary movement in baby bathing. Rather than put your sweetie into a plastic tub, which eventually leaks, you can place her into this space saving cradle right in the sink. “There are things that I love, so I bring them in, but I also respect what my customers want and I carry 40 ieStyle Dec/Jan 2011
those lines too,” says Laura. She cares so much about her customers that she has a boutique within her boutique. Carved out towards the rear of the store is a sling section. The sling has become so popular to mommies as of late that Laura has decided to help out and be there as a mom figures out what’s best for her and her baby. Fitting? Absolutely. Muslin blankets by Swaddle last “forever” says Ms. Powers. And she goes on to talk about the Kissui’s “huge” cloth diaper selection, mommy-needs (like nursing bras, pad and Petunia Picklebottom bags) and fighting the misconception that, “because we’re a boutique, we must be expensive.” Aside from having the largest hair-bow selection in town and girly tutu’s that start at $12, Kissui is about as budget-friendly and as cute as it gets. Jewel Tones That large shop just at the corner? That would be Ozel Jewelers of Redlands. It’s also where you’ll go to score your next big shiny thing. The family owned business moved from the Redlands Mall to East State Street a little over a year ago. In its new home, Ozel is bigger and better than ever. The chocolate and vanilla hued interior was a concept by Emanuel Jacobson, who designed the place after the oversized and ultra-decadent jewelry shops that pepper the streets of New York City. Emanuel candidly says, “I wanted to create a place where I would want to shop and I just wanted to have something amazing.” Glittering sconces, crystal covered chandeliers and a photo by a New York-based artist turned glass backdrop deliver “amazing.” But it’s what’s inside the cases that create the “wow.” Rich gold fashion pieces share the stage with cocktail rings, engagement rings and rarities like South Sea Tahitian Black Pearls. Many pieces at Ozel’s are one-of-a-kind as the diamond wonder-house specializes in custom work. One work that couldn’t go unnoticed was a $40,000 white gold cuff, littered with 500 white and sprinkled with natural colored diamonds
(chocolate and yellow). Stunning. Designs like this are common at Ozel as Emanuel likes to showcase jewelry that you won’t find just anywhere. He’s also committed to carrying pieces from artists like K. Brunini, who has designed for the likes of Brad and Angelina. She delivers strong pieces that stand out like her latest, Body Armor, an oversized necklace of silver hooks with a leather strap and pieces that showcase the intricacy that only an artist could bring to her work like in her longstanding Twig collection (originally created in 1998). Chances are you’ll leave with something delicious--encrusted hoops, a sweet rose gold ring or maybe a glittering cross. You’ll certainly leave satisfied and happy knowing that you just scored a one-of a-kind. Ozel, Jewelers of Redlands. Located at 2 East State Street. 909-793-7986. www.ozeljewelersofredlands.net

Jean Pool Redlands shopping wouldn’t be complete if you weren’t able to snag a few unique numbers for your wardrobe. DenM marks its territory on State Street with creative window displays and equally pleasing fashion finds inside. With a vintage-inspired design scheme and a couple of reclaimed doors, which act as fitting room separators, DenM seems like a spot plucked from L.A.’s celebrated 3rd Street. But the creativity goes beyond the cheeky digs and spills into the clothing. Tom’s Shoes are plentiful at the place, while flowly tops from Lush also ride shotgun. In fact, the selection of Lush is so large it might have you seeing 42

and buying double. Tops, military-inspired jackets and fitted blazers are brand no-brainers. Frankie B. jeans and True Religions are a must have for the gal who lives in her jeans. Girlish Free People favorites hang from the racks too. And American Apparel basics are definitely in attendance to dress up or dress down your situation. Unique necklaces and locally made earrings make up the accessory department. Sidenote, this shop is so with it, that you’ll be able to grab something for your guy too. DenM. Bean There At some point you’ll need a pick-me-up. That’s where Augie’s Coffee House comes in. The quaint spot is marked by an eye-catching red brick exterior just off State Street. A luxury foiled ceiling coexists with concrete floors, rust colored walls and a modish approach in the furniture department. Tables are situated throughout; while bar stools also offer a nice way to soak up solitude. Andy Amento took over ownership of Augie’s (along with the help of his wife, Linda and son Austin) in January 2009 after scouring the streets of Redlands for a family style location. So, this marks a year for the coffee house and a lot has happened within that year. Just last fall, Augie’s began roasting and selling their own beans. That should be reason enough to stop in for a shopping boost. Bring a bit of big city, small coffee shop flare to Redland’s, , Augie’s offers free

The shop is overflowing with odds and ends that are perfect for gifting. Start by paying attention to the candle selection, where you’ll find luscious scents like Pink Peony from Aquiesse (an ieStyle favorite) and Gin & Rosewater from Tokyo Milk. The goodies don’t stop there. The shop keeps delivering more objects of desire like more Tokyo Milk treats (bubble bath, anyone) and fresh finding from Tea Forte. Just in time for the holiday season and your venture into 2011, J.D. Myers carries the entire Tea Forte collection including sweet little buttery bits--White Ginger Pear and Sweet Orange Spice cookies. Need more treats? DISCOVERY REDLANDS
On the Avenue Not far from State Street on a nearby corner, you’ll find the real essence of Redlands (and all of the shopping will have made you hungry so you’ll need a place to snack). Olive Ave. Market brings the vintage feel of days gone by. Just past an outside herb garden and picnic area is a simple screen door that serves as the store’s entrance. Gourmet treats like raw honey and artisan mustards line the shelves. Crates of fresh veggies line up in the middle of the store (courtesy of Three Sisters Produce) and old-timey looking sodas and seltzers fill the refrigerator, along with fresh-made sandwiches, salads and burritos. A cheerful staff plays host making Cappuccinos and the like, while the townspeople come in and out as though the place is their own--parents bringing their children by for after school treats or locals grabbing an afternoon coffee and reading the paper. “It’s been around since 1924 and this is really one of the only neighborhood markets left, says
Sonya Rozzi, one of the market’s owners. She and two of her best friends, Missy Van Zeyl and Amber Wallick (all Redlands natives who grew up together and whose children grew up together as well) took over the space in 2007 and adapted to the needs of the neighborhood. Olive Ave. Market keeps its commitment to the locals with catering services, unique wines, homemade pastries, holiday baskets and holiday treats (like peppermint toffee) and it’s one of the only places around to score the famous, familymade Theron Frozen Custard. You can take your lunch at the counter and chat with the warm staff (some of whom are the owners’ children) or post up at one of the large communal tables. Perhaps, you’ll make a friend and you’ll chat about the market’s large street sign reading “Redlands City Limit,” or the carousel horse in the back--both eclectic finds from Sonya’s contractor. Another way Olive Ave. Market has listened to the neighborhood? A fresh herb garden and a tranquil back patio. Who’s ready to relax? Olive Ave. Market. Located at 530 W. Top Ten New Year Resolutions
N
ew Year’s is the only holiday that celebrates the passage of time. Perhaps that’s why, as the final seconds of the year tick away, we become introspective. Inevitably, that introspection turns to thoughts of self-improvement and the annual ritual of making resolutions, which offer the first of many important tools for remaking ourselves.
The following list is the result of our survey which we conducted over a one month period via twitter and facebook. Thanks once again to all of our fans and followers.
1. Lose Weight and Get in Better Physical Shape We all knew this was coming, No matter the person’s size or age it seems everyone is prepping for the battle of the bulge! Soon you will see a swarm of TV ads convincing us that our youthful figure is locked away in their bottle of miracle pills. Only to read the fine print below that clearly states
46
ieStyle Dec/Jan 2011
*Results not typical, use as part of a diet and exercise program* For most of us excersise is boring and diet is well, punishment. But it doesn’t have to be. With a slew of alternative fitness studios opening their doors in the IE, you can melt away the pounds and learn some sexy moves with pole dancing, belly dancing, ballroom dancing and outdoor boot camp fitness programs that are all
designed to keep us entertained. If your spare time is spent sitting in traffic each morning and evening, evening, then you too can mold that jelly by squeezing your buns during the drive to work and tightening your tummy on the way home. You can even squeeze at your desk and choose to walk to lunch. Replace chocolate and sugary snacks with fruit and veggies; add water and you will be on your way.
2. Save More Money Yes, we can all afford to save a little more money in the New Year without depriving ourselves. Just as much as we enjoy spending our money, we can make a game out of saving it that can be almost as enjoyable. If you tend to carry and spend cash, make a game out of saving every $5 bill you get back as change. Store these fab 5’s in a jar or piggy bank all year long and watch your money grow. If you are a debit card diva, then do some online banking and set up an automatic transfer of $50 every two weeks or on your payroll dates. Your money will flow from your checking into your savings account painlessly. If you stick to it, you could have an extra $1,200 or more this time next year that is sure to give you plenty of reason to celebrate.
3. Debt Reduction One of the first things you have to do before any debt can be eliminated is to stop using charge accounts. If you continue to use the accounts, you are only fueling the problem, and building on it, not solving it. Make a resolution now to stop charging anything and to get financially stable. If you can’t pay cash for it, you don’t need it, make it just that simple and you will find yourself out of debt in no time at all. Keep a diary of all money spent, whether it is by cash, check, credit card, etc. Once you know where your money is going, then, and only then, can you take the steps needed to prepare a good budget that you can live with and make huge strides to budgeting your debt away.
5. Date More Whether you are married or single, it seems many of you want to spice things up in the relationship department in 2011. For our married readers we recommend initiating a date night at least once a month. Make it an evening that reminds your significant other of why they fell for you in the first place. That means don’t make it a therapy session! Have kids? Meet for lunch once a week at a restaurant you
wouldn’t normally take the kids or form a married couple’s date night support system with your friends so you can take turns caring for each other’s children. For our singles, romance is alive and well as more and more people are looking for that special someone, their “soul mate” who lights their fire, the ONE whom they love unequivocally and who share their worldview. Okay, maybe you just want to have a little fun,
4. Enjoy More Quality Time with Family & Friends Let’s face it, the reason we work so hard in the first place is for our families. But with work, kid’s sports, friends, walking the dog and the spouse to contend with, spending quality family time can be difficult. One way to kick off a new family time tradition is with Friday Family Night. This works on all budgets. You can choose to cook something as a family, rent a movie instead of going out to the movies, play a classic game of charades and even make a snack run to the local seven eleven in your PJ’s. Kill two birds with one stone and invite a few close friends over to participate in your family fun once a month. We can’t end this segment without mentioning a good old GNO (girl’s night out). Meet up with your gal pals once a month for dinner and karaoke. Now that makes for some good food, good friends and good laughs.
in any case It’s important to put yourself out there, make yourself available and get used to saying yes more often when it comes to invites. It may not go too far but at worst you can get out and enjoy some adult interaction that’s not work or kid related. Online dating is very popular and helps you shop without buying. Meet up for coffee and conversation and let destiny do the rest.

6. Quit Smoking
Becoming a non-smoker is probably one of the best decisions you can ever make, and is a life changing as well as a life saving decision. The benefits to your health, relationships, finances, vitality, the environment and to your sense of self-esteem for having conquered a really hard-to-kick habit will make any and all of your efforts and determination more than worthwhile. The resolution to become a non-smoker will also help you to live longer and enjoy the finer things in life. We say, add up all the money you spent in 2010 on this stinky habit and make a list of all of the things you could have bought with that money. Reward yourself at each milestone you reach with one of the things on your list. You owe it to yourself.
7. Find a Better Job
Many people resolve to find better jobs or to take a new approach to the jobs they’ve already have. If you are at a company you enjoy, set your sights on the latter. Ask your HR manager what additional education or special training you will need in order to move to the next level. Some companies will pay for your education in a related discipline. Continued education plus applied experience will add to your value and overall income in the future. We say, if you are going to sit on the freeway and work at a company day in and day out like everyone else, wouldn’t you rather be one of the higher paid individuals there. Set your sights on the future and get moving.
8. Learn Something New
Aside from going back to school, it seems many of you are interested in learning something new. Learning a new language can be fun, enriching and may even help your career. Taking dance lessons can add spice to your relationship, help you get fit or just realize your dream of dancing LIKE the stars. Learning to surf, fly a plane, sail or snowboard can all be things that develop into lifelong passions. Even something as basic as learning how to cook gourmet style entrées, or bake like the pros, can be fun and fulfilling.
9. Volunteer and Help Others
A popular, non-selfish New Year’s resolution, volunteerism can take many forms such as spending time helping out at your local library, mentoring a child, or building a house to name a few. Volunteering has risen sharply in the years since we began collecting resolutions. This suggests the possible emergence of a new civic generation and a resolve to make a bigger and better difference with your life. Resolve to replace the pursuit of success and materialism with the pursuit of contribution and generosity. For this to occur, the critical question must move from, “How can I become successful?” to, “What can I contribute that will significantly impact other people’s lives?”
48
ieStyle Dec/Jan 2011
By focusing on what we can contribute, we automatically become successful. We say, if you don’t have much time to donate, clean out your closets each season and start by donating your items. If you have children, this is a wonderful routine to get them in to.
10. Get Organized
Simply put we are creatures of habit. By forming new, healthy, productive habits we avoid slipping back into the clutter of our old ways. Small changes such as buying different colored laundry baskets so everyone knows where to put their dirty whites, blacks and colors, can make laundry night easier and keep rooms less cluttered. A shopping list on or near the refrigerator will allow everyone to list items that have run out or run low that you will need to get on your next trip to the market. Setting up automatic bill pay for your utilities, car payment, credit cards and other recurring bills will save you the hassle of writing checks and even make due dates a little less stressful. Even creating a new daily schedule that incorporates time for working out, walking the dog, reading to the kids, making dinner and watching your favorite reality show can make a world of difference.
It’s a New Year and it’s time for a new you. Good Luck!
Training Day

iverside based trainer, Karla Adams, shares the secrets to a better body and a better you. Listen up, because there’s more to getting fit than what meets the eye.
Karla Adams has been talking training, fitness and nutrition for 15 years, so it goes without saying that this lady knows her stuff. Karla has devoted her life to health, wellness and personal growth in many ways. She’s done it all from traveling to Japan (7 times) for the Sendai Half Marathon and taking on the role of the Chair persona

for the Senai-Riverside Sister City Relationship--the oldest in the world to sitting on the International Relations Board for Riverside City. Karla has appeared on Spike TV, she’s spoken at several conventions, she’s certified in nutrition and personal training, she’s heavily involved in the community and she’s a Loma Linda Loper (a runner).
Oh and she looks fantastic in a bikini, year round. Karla’s approach to helping you build a better you in 2011, doesn’t start with a gym membership or training or a low-carb diet. Instead, Karla focuses on the mind, as she believes it to be the most powerful tool we have. You have to, “Say positive things that reflect a good job, this releases positive chemicals and that in turn, increases your health,” says Karla.
K
arla on the benefits of training: What training does depends on the person’s body type. I like to encourage different ways to workout from weights to cardio to sports--they all offer unique benefits. When women work with weights they need to view it as an investment in their body--a way of changing the body type. Most women want a runner or a swimmer’s body and they are afraid that they’ll “bulk up” or look like a guy if they work with weights. But in order for a woman to look that way she would have to take hormones. I like to recommend a full body workout exercise to create a more balanced body. It’s also very powerful to get involved in a community to stay active. When your social life is physically active, you begin to ingrain this lifestyle into who you are.
K
arla on building a better body (and a better you): For someone looking to change long-term, it’s all about “self-development.” I don’t believe in the short or the long route, I believe that when you make a change you want to make it stay. A better “you,” is about a lifestyle. When you see someone who lives this kind of lifestyle, you’ll notice that they prioritize nutrition and fitness. Living such a dedicated lifestyle is a process and there are layers and you have to keep stacking your wall.
For those who are building, it’s discouraging and the goal becomes an “event” and the person will revert back to their old ways and habits. You want to reprogram the brain--new habits make you all the more powerful.
K
arla on expectations: I’ll tell people what’s realistic and what it’ll take. I teach development so they can create a lifestyle. In California we’re constantly hit with messages. There’s a trend that we should drop fifty pounds in a month--most of these types of stories are very dramatic. The average weight loss is between one and three pounds per week. People need to get focused on the change of life, not the weight. What matters is the set up if you want to make the changes stay.

K
arla on abs and arms: Abs to be honest is all nutrition. This is the one area that I work the least. When you’re going through a regular fitness program your abs will strengthen on their own and you’ll need to do very little ab work. As for the “chicken wings” (or triceps), working out helps to eliminate this, but the key is getting your body fat low. An overall workout with weights helps to tone, because you don’t want to lose muscle and body fat, just body fat. You also want to pay attention to your nutrition.
K
arla on diets: There are tons of great diets out there, but it’s not so much about the diet, it’s the mindset. People need to be ready to change in order to create. You have to do the natural foods and the organic foods, obviously and you can have your “entertainment food.” But you want to put it in a box. Know that it’s okay to have, but you can’t live off of it. Usually, when I sit down with a client we take an hour to an hour and a half discussing how people are actually “viewing” food. I like to teach nutrients and balance. But again, it’s about getting the mind in the right place. The mind will create what it wants, so if you want to have this lifestyle change, you have to create it. I tell people “We’re all our own creators.”
K
arla on cardio: You definitely want to get your heart rate up. Different things work for different people. You also want to pay attention to your body and notice how your body is progressing so you know when to up the bar. I really believe in education. It’s so important. You want to know what’s going on with you so you’re not wasting time. I’ve seen people go in and workout five times a week and either maintain or even gain weight because they’re not changing it up. You have to learn 52
ieStyle Dec/Jan 2011
what to eat and what it means to challenge the body. To do that I say, “Look at your product.” Do you like what you’re seeing; are you getting the results that you want? If walking is giving you the result you want then keep at it.
K
arla on the holidays: The holidays are a great time to set a goal. It feels great to achieve something during the holiday season. If you do this, you won’t get dragged into the social eating. It’s like this, we’ll have holidays every year, so why not approach them in a new way and start in November, don’t wait until January. There have been several holiday seasons where I have dropped weight and I have the opportunity to enjoy the time and think about other stuff because I’m not so concerned with what I’m eating and how it’ll affect me.
K
arla on 2011 and her goals: This year, I’m going to start playing tennis. I’ve been a competitive athlete in the past, but this will be a new sport for me. It’s important to add different sports in your life because you’ll train your body and your brain in a new way. I’m going to Japan in May with a group of runners to represent the city of Riverside for the Sendai Half Marathon. I’m also going to begin a seminar system on lifestyle change. I’m working with the city of Riverside and trying to affect the health trends here. I want to build more awareness. But you can see that it’s building--people are more
aware, they are putting forth more effort and spending more money on health and wellness. You see Sprouts are popping up and people are paying attention to their health. I want to be able to contribute to strengthening this trend, because Riverside County ranks fourth in obesity in the state. People have a general idea, but not everyone knows how to take the tools and make them apart of their lives--these are the key subjects that make up the uniqueness of my company. Designer to Watch:
Michael Ferrera You hear about emerging fashion designers from all over. And believe it or not there is some right in your backyard. Inland Empire based menswear designer, Michael Ferrera, sits down to talk style and the importance of custom design. He’s dishing on pocket squares, his own can’t-live-without piece and why men’s tailoring is a must for the modern man. By: Candace S. Abbott

MF: Well, it never really was a change. I always

knew I wanted to go into fashion from day one. I went in as a financial consultant with the idea to use financial consulting as a segway or an opportunity to finance and fund my business. So, I knew the change would come in time. It was always my plan.
MF: Jackets are my favorite. The reason being
is that it’s not just a jacket that you put on your shoulders; it can be customized with Blackberry and iPhone pockets or monograms. It can be made to feel unique.
ieStyle: What do you enjoy most about designing men’s clothing?
ieStyle: Who are some of your favorite designers right now and why?

boring. Common thought is that, “it’s just slacks” or “it’s just a jacket,” “it’s just a shirt,” “it’s just a tie,”--people think that’s what we’re limited to. Yes, I do feel that women have more options and accessories. However, I love to mix and match colors, and styles and patterns. I like to take a blue suit and give it a rock-star interior with embroidery and monograms. I’ll give it pockets on the inside that really personalize and individualize
ones that I liked six to eight years ago. I’m very selective on what I like, but two designers that I respect would be Hugo Boss and Polo Ralph Lauren. The main reason is that they understand value and quality of product. They don’t cut corners on fabrics or things like that, and they’re favorable to taller individuals, like me. It allows taller men to have their clothes altered and fixed and still have enough fabric to make it look good. ieStyle Dec/Jan 2011 55
DESIGNER TO WATCH
ieStyle: Describe the importance of tailored menswear, why is it relevant in today’s market? MF: I think it’s extremely important for men to
have their clothes altered and tailored just for them. Even if they don’t have custom products, that suit that they’re buying off the rack should be tailored to their individual bodies and needs. Unfortunately, I think that’s one of the aspects people miss, they just buy a suit and think that’s it. The next level is to have it tailored so it can contour to your body. Tailoring has always been a part of menswear. A lot of times men fail to pay attention to detail. A well tailored suit will make a man look more attractive to women.
ieStyle: Biggest faux pas you see these days? MF: I see a lot of individuals who wear suits,
but don’t pay attention to the detail and that minor detail takes away from the image they’re trying MF: A lot of people think my inspiration comes from other designers or celebrities. MF: It really is dependent on their needs.
For example, before I even show any fabrics or items, I ask them how they’re going to be wearing the clothes. Is it for work? Do they travel a lot? Is it for leisure? Are they dressing for dinners, dances, balls? That allows me to recommend different colors and styles. Once I know how they’re wearing the clothes, I ask them what they like--colors, stripes, fits, patterns. From there I show fabrics and take measurements and then we build the product.
ieStyle: Let’s talk about your personal style. What are some of your “can’t-live-without” pieces? MF: Surprisingly I would say jeans. I just
love jeans. I design jeans as well, in addition to the suits. They can be dressed up, they can be dressed down, and they’re comfortable. My second “must” is the suit. It’s the international business uniform, I say.
ieStyle: Do you travel a lot? If so, what do ieStyle: Where do you get your inspiration? you consider to be the most fashionable cities 56

and why?
DESIGNER TO WATCH
MF: I do get to travel. I would say I travel
about six times out of the year. I travel to conventions where I have the opportunity to meet many men who could utilize my services. I’m somewhat bias, but I definitely feel like I’d have to say L.A. is one of the most fashionable cities. Though we’re casual here, but in the grand-scheme of things we do have a lot of style, swagger and flare. It’s an on-going battle between New York and L.A.--it’s always going to be that way.
ieStyle: What’s the most exciting part about being a designer? MF: It’s individual--I don’t even hesitate
to answer. Every one of my designs are one-of-a-kind, there’s no other piece like that. I love that. When my clients attend a dinner or event they can feel confident that they’re the only one that’s going to look like that.
ieStyle: There’s definitely a level of “decadence”
that comes with hiring you, seeing as how you go to your client’s home. There’s also a very old-school feel. Can you speak to these points?
MF: Interesting you say, “The old-school”
feel. I started to survey some of my clients and I found that they really enjoy the personal feel, they do. They like feeling like it’s “their own experience.” I visit someone when I get the opportunity. I do complimentary visits and at that time people can choose and select different options. Sometimes I’d do a consultation over the phone if it’s a referral, then we do an in-person visit and start designing the clothes.
ieStyle: Pocket squares, yay or nay? MF: Yay! No question about it. Completes the outfit. Adds a little more flare.
ieStyle: What are you working on for 2011? MF: I’ll be adding the custom feature to the website. Clients can design their shirts right online. They’ll be able to choose from French
cuffs, cuff-links, choose buttonholes, design fabrics. We’re thinking of adding a chance to design jeans, but for sure people will be able to design their own shirts. I can’t tell you everything, but I’ll be revamping the Michael Ferrera website. More interaction via Facebook and Twitter and more products. We’re thinking of possibly letting clients share their designs. I think that’s the biggest thing, which is pretty cool. People are asking if we’re going to do a women’s line. It’s not in the playbook yet. In time, we’ll do a custom women’s line, but not for 2011. So hang-tight ladies, we’ll be with you shortly.
ieStyle: You’re all about custom pieces from shirts to sports coats. Tell me why you think that appeals to men? MF: It doesn’t appeal to every man. However, it does appeal to the wide variety of men that understand the importance of presentation. Many of my clients already invest in their wardrobe, so when I meet with my clients, it’s not that they look “bad,” but they want to look better than they already do. This is more custom and allows them to have products made just for them--things that no one else has. And we all know that when something it personalized, it just feels different. ieStyle: Where do you see Michael Ferrera in five years? MF: I love this question. I already have a vision, I already have a plan. We will continue to grow and expand. We’ll stay true to custom, but in the future we’ll do a ready-to-wear brand that people can purchase off the racks of high-end department stores. We will always allow people to have products made to their specifications. We’ll stay 100% bespoke. My corporate office is here in the Inland Empire, but I am considering another location in Los Angeles to service the needs of all of my clients. But the most important thing is staying true to the customer experience. Visit Michael online at www.michaelferrera.com

For those who are skipping the resorts this season, there’s a cozy locale that has your name written all over it. Take some time to discover the Westlake Village Inn. By Candace S. Abbott
Westlake Village
F
ar beyond the Hollywood sign, just past the star-studded hills of Calabasas sits a small place shadowed by the earth’s formations and nestled between the trees. It’s Westlake Village. Composed of two parts luxury and equal parts charm, this town boasts a rich history (it was once farm land) to go along with its wealthy present. A short drive down a tree-lined Agoura Road leads you to a page out of a story book--the Westlake Village Inn. Large wrought-iron gates and a cobblestone driveway welcome you into the sweet “European” 60 ieStyle Dec/Jan 2011
village, complete with its own vineyard, its own fresh garden and bicycles for trips around the town. And because it’s that special season, you won’t be able to ignore the ground’s festive decor of lights, trees, wreaths and cheer. Enter the decadent lobby where a vintage service bell sits at the check-in desk. Such a small item speaks volumes to the Westlake’s commitment to detail. Right in the center of the cathedral-style ceiling hangs a chandelier that mixes rustic with luxe as eye-catching crystals drip from the fixture’s limbs. Oversized, pin-tucked white couches and brocade

red and black seating share the space with carefully selected accessories--a looking glass, a crocodile-skin box, antiqued mirrors, lamps trimmed with wild bird feathers and more.. The Inn’s owner makes frequent trips to Europe, returning inspired by his finds--be them Old World treasures or modern must-haves. This love for European ambiance translates throughout the property as Westlake Village buildings borrow their names from some of Europe’s most beloved cities--Capri, Tuscany and Monte Carlo. Though the Inn is a decent sized property, quaintness overtakes the entire place. It’s covered in lush greenery and peppered with wild sprigs;
ivy crawls up the columns and along the walls, while dainty flowers mark their territory throughout. Even situated among the buildings is a luscious rose arbor that’s ideal for a little reflection and pathways open themselves up to leisurely walks, which often mean a visit with the resident wildlife--an array of birds, rabbits and oftentimes, squirrels. According to a local married couple, Betty and Joe, the Inn is, “So romantic that we’ll just come here and stay for the evening.” The Inn’s interiors are as charming as its exterior. The must have sleeping arrangement? A mini-suite. You’re on holiday, after all. The folks on the property take a great pride in creating a

Westlake Village cozy experience just for you. You arrive to a crackling fireplace and light music, your bed made to perfection--outfitted in fine white linens and a modish throw--and if you’re lucky, a bottle of the Inn’s own, Proprietary red wine. The 400 square foot cozy-space gives glorious views of the rose arbor and each room has a private terrace--perfect for morning coffee in your bathrobe, naturally. The relaxation level goes up a notch as all of the mini-suites house jacuzzi-style bathtubs (surrounded by an ultra-decadent brown velvet curtain). This is definitely a sure way to relieve any holiday stress. Let your brain forget about who’s left to shop for, who you forgot to shop for and will you get that bag you’ve

been craving, an evening in your Westlake digs clears your head and calms your spirit. The eats on property are unmatched, thanks to the doing of Chef Alberto Vasquez--who can’t get enough of cooking with fresh, seasonal ingredients to create his Mediterranean meets Californian menu at Mediterraneo. Designed as a mix of modern and traditional the space features low ceilings and big comfy black leather booths (holiday meal, anyone), picturesque views of the lake and the waterfall, an open kitchen and luscious black lucite chandeliers overhead. One of the fashionable places to dine at Mediterraneo is
undoubtedly the quaint, white marble bar, with its mirrored ceiling, studded white leather chairs and lattice walls (laced with tea-lights, of course). Sit here and you might just get a one-on-one chat with the chef or a few locals, like Luzette Vidal and Debbie VanValkenburg, as you sip on some red and sample the most amazing olive tapenade around. Ladies like Luzette and Debbie are restaurant locals, waxing poetic on the fare (must haves include the Rigatoni and the Parisian bread pudding) and giving the lowdown on the “sleepy town that has become huge.” Luzette, a former flight attendant turned top-notch real estate agent,
Westlake Village has been in Westlake Village since 1988 and tells of its growth. “When I came here, because I used to live in Beverly Hills, everyone was asking ‘why, what’s there,’ and at the time there wasn’t much, but it was growing and it’s only 45 minutes from Beverly Hills, everything I want is here, the air is clean and it’s one of the safest cities in Southern California,” she shares. Debbie, the owner of local business, Bumper2Bumper--cosmetics for cars, she calls it--came to Westlake from Georgia and tells of how she loves Westlake Village and of how she loves the Inn. They can’t get enough of doing things local (shopping at M. Fredric at The Promenade and getting mani pedis)
and smile when talking about the sense of community that’s to be had in those parts. Who calls Westlake home? Big name celebs like Nicky Six, Heather Locklear, Wayne Gretzky and even Ellen, settle in the sweet little town. You’ll be taken aback at the kind of spirit the makes a home at the Inn. It’s cheerful and carefree, almost. Go ahead and gift yourself with an 80 minute aromatherapy massage--in room, of course. That’s the beauty of the latest
addition. You can take your rubdown in one of the spa’s plush treatment rooms or beside the fireplace in your own room (and if it’s warm out, get the knots rubbed out in a poolside cabana). The Icing on the Cake “I couldn’t find good desserts and that’s part of the reason why we started the company,” says a Christy Grammer.
C h r i s t y G r a m mer’s c o m p a n y , S u i t e 106 Cupcakery, is hotter than a 360 degree oven. In the last few years, the hometown darling has graced Food network’s “Cupcake Wars” (and won), catered a host of celeb studded events, and even turned out a long list of uncanny flavors. Christy talks past, present and future in this exclusive interview. It’s really a story of “sweet success.” By: Candace S. Abbott 68 ieStyle Dec/Jan 2011

he Rancho Cucamonga-based company became official back in 2007. When the market slowed down, cupcake productivity went up. Christy, who worked for her family’s financial business had always baked as a pastime, but never thought a career would come out of it. When the Grammer family relocated to Etiwanda back in the 1980’s, a young Christy had dreams of becoming a hairstylist. After graduating from Etiwanda High School she attended San Bernardino College and Citrus College and got her cosmetology license (as well as an insurance license). And sometime in the nineties, Ms. Grammer formed a girl group, originally dubbed, “Diva” and then “Brown Sugar. “I wanted to be a

singer or an actor and I wanted to do hair.” After the girl group ended, Christy dabbled in hairstyling, but eventually ended up devoting most of her time to the family business. Of her early days in the workforce, Christy speaks candidly of her mother and the influence she had on Christy and her two sisters (one being acclaimed fashion designer, Rebecca Ybara). “My mom taught us to be go-getters. She’s the kind of woman who makes it happen. As children, she had us passing out fliers to promote the business.” But when Christy’s mother wasn’t teaching her girls how to take the world by storm--with a smile on their faces, naturally--she was filling their bellies with unforgettable homemade desserts. “My mom made everything from scratch--she made her own dough, she made the most amazing cookies and a to-die-for coconut cake.”

Over the years, Christy baked. It even became a friendly competition between Christy and her mom to see who could deliver the most delectable dessert during the holidays. Those perfect holiday treats eventually became sampled by co-workers and before she knew it Christy was filled with desire to make the perfect cupcake. “Cupcakes were hard, because I was used to cakes. They became a challenge for me.” But Christy kept at it. She experimented with new techniques and began “testing the science of baking,” then she began to employ organic ingredients and fine chocolates from Valrhona, Madacascar vanilla and the like. Before long her co-workers couldn’t get enough and encouraged Christy to move forward with this.

The Icing on the Cake hristy started a blog and soon her readers wanted the scoop on how they could sample her creations. So being the go-getter that she is, Christy got her food handlers license and started catering. “It was definitely a struggle, starting without loans, buying product, using my savings to rent kitchens, but somehow everything fell into place.” “I got a call around Valentine’s day. It was February 2010 when Food Network contacted me asking if I’d audition for Cake Wars. I had previously been approached by some other networks like MTV and Spike, but it was to host gifting suites. I was getting really busy with orders and had some personal things going on, so I declined, but they called back. So finally, I said, ‘ok.’ When my fiancé Jason wouldn’t go on with me, I forced my sister [Rebecca] to join me. The producers saw us joking and laughing,

because when we’re nervous that’s what we do, and they loved us. Before the day was over they offered us a spot on show.” Since the television appearance, Suite 106 Cupcakery has taken off. As of October, Christy was booked right through the middle of November with holiday orders. But that wasn’t the only thing that had Christy all smiles that warm day in October. We were meeting in what was Suite 106 Cupcakery’s brand new kitchen--a large space, complete with an office and reception area. The space was patiently waiting to be filled. “We were so excited because literally we just got approved for an equipment loan. I just wanted to fill the space. It’s huge and we went with it because it’s so affordable. It was previously a catering kitchen, so it’s already set-up for hookups. I loved it!” squeals Christy. So what’s it like going from hometown sweetie to celeb favorite and most craved cupcakery overnight? Christy who has hosted events for Ben Affleck, Alyssa Milano, “Sugar” Shane Mosley, Raven Simone and the Camp Rock crew says, “I didn’t even think anyone really knew about us like that.” Her “big deal” moment she says, happened last August when the team did an event at Crossroads church in Corona.

vonne, Suite 106’s Executive Assistant, kept telling Christy and the crew that this wasn’t going to be a small scale event and people would definitely be lining up to catch a glimpse of the lady behind the lavish dessert. But Christy and Rebecca didn’t believe her. So that afternoon, the Suite 106 Cupcakery truck arrived to a crowd close to 4,000--screaming and filled with excitement. They sold out of cupcakes in 20 minutes (so they promised to come back the next week). “We were shocked,” said Christy. “I had never expected to see a line that long all for us. After the church event we were getting calls about how people had been inspired by us. We were in tears taking those calls...it was a surreal moment.” No doubt, these cupcakes are life changing (hey, they saved Christy’s home). Obviously, they can bring people to tears and they can inspire. But what’s in them that sets them apart from some of the others? Well, according to Christy, “You can taste the love.” A self-proclaimed “chocolate lover” Christy always sought to make the perfect chocolate cake and when she started working with Valrhona (of France), she did just that. Her cakes aren’t sugary, they’re “an artisan delight” and she uses real fresh ingredients. Christy even has refined her fiancé’s palate and redeemed him from boxed cakes. As for the flavors, Christy says they’re a twist on family recipes. She was inspired by a spice cake that her mother always made and from that developed the “Pancakes & Bacon” cupcake, which her 16 year-old daughter, Monae, and her fiancé can’t get enough of. Christy has upped the ante with her award-winning “Southern Red Velvet” cupcake, a bananas foster cupcake complete with a rum caramel sauce, a chocolate espresso
cupcake, and a host of others. Some have yet to hit the menu…..as Christy and Jason often stay up developing new, unique flavors. Another of Christy’s signature creations that has the town talking are her cupcake cups. These came about when Ms. Grammer was trying to figure out the best way to ship her goods. When her older sister, who she dubs, “Crafty Cathy,” sent her a candle, she was inspired to ship her cupcakes in the same mason jar. Then there’s the Suite 106 Cupcakery truffle. It’s a cupcake, rolled in frosting and dipped in Belgian chocolate. Can we say indulgent? Yes! And now can we say best idea ever? Yes! Christy’s fans in Atlanta, Miami and NYC can get that same sweet California fix thanks to these ingenious creations. In the early days, it was Christy’s blog that got cupcake lovers nationwide hooked on her treats. Nowadays, she’s turned to Twitter. She does all of the tweeting herself and reveals the power of her hands-on business practices. “I personally answer emails, I take orders and sometimes I even do deliveries ( Jason, my fiancé, helps out too). I feel like I owe that kind of service to my customers.
ieStyle Dec/Jan 2011 71
The Icing on the Cake I love hearing from my clients and building a better relationship with them.” And when it comes to strong relationships, Christy Grammer is no stranger. She says without blinking, “My family--my mom, my dad, my sisters, my daughter, Jason, Yvonne--are such an inspiration to me. They’ve been with me every step of the way, encouraging me to keep going. Rebecca always has these great ideas and she’s always pushing me to try new things.” One new thing Christy would love to try is “free time.” With the business moving so quickly, she hardly ever gets any time to herself. But when she can get some “me time,” Christy doesn’t mind spending it at Spa Terre at the Riviera in Palm Springs. “I went last April with my sister and my cousin and just loved it. It was hot out there, but the spa was soooo nice.” Her other favorite pastime? Spending time with her daughter, Monae. “It’s tough being a mom and running a business, you know? Before the show I was able to take her around, volunteer at her events and be “the volleyball mom,” but our lives have changed so much. The good thing though is that Monae is working for me, so she’s learning the business and it’s a great way for us to spend quality time. We bake together when we can as well.” 72 ieStyle Dec/Jan 2011

This charming business woman has big plans for her company, Suite 106, who takes its name from location of the family business. “It’s a play on words. We kept fiddling with names, but everything was taken, then we realized we spent so much time there and we did everything at that place.” It only seemed right to dub her sweet shop after the iconic suite. And a look to the past will help define the future. “Rebecca is working on putting the cupcakes into boutique hotels and restaurants. We’re currently working to get them into the cafe at Neiman Marcus.” All super delicious news, which comes fresh off of their new venture into the wholesale market. When asked where she sees her business going, Christy gets giddy and her eyes light up with hope. “I see a storefront happening in a few years. In fact, I see locations in all of the major metropolitan cities--L.A., New York, Orange County, Chicago, of course. But our next big thing is the food truck!” Can we expect to grab our cupcakes on the go? If the Kitchen Aid owning (she has one in black and red), cupcake goddess, loving mom, devoted soon-to-be wife has any say so, we will. Christy’s words of wisdom are short and sweet, but oh so savory: “Write down your goals, put them in front of you, and look at them every day. If you do this and keep positive, you’ll go far.” And when Christy’s not behind the wheel of the Suite 106 Cupcakery truck, we can guess that the one-time fluent French speaker finally took that trip to France to experience Valrhona chocolate, firsthand.

I didn’t feel rushed or oversold however, I did learn about some products that I will go back and purchase in the future. My stylist was vivacious without being annoying. The energy was upbeat and still relaxing. I have received many compliments and the shine from my freshly colored hair still lingers.

Steals from the beloved Jeffrey Campbell, accessories from Kate Spade, outerwear from Opening Ceremony and savings codes from Le Train Bleu, Shopbop, Lulu’s and Les Nouvelle’s pepper the site constantly. Sites with free shipping? You’ll find that on Sale Bite too. But the excitement doesn’t stop as Christina religiously posts a weekly round-up of some of the web’s top sale opportunities, interviews designers, and offers fun reads like her “Shop the Sale” column. Sale Bite doesn’t require a membership or crowd up your inbox with lofty offers. It’s a cheerful, well edited list of the sales you actually want to shop. YSL silhouette is no feat when you’re working with Wanna Wear by Tina O. The priciest piece Tina has? A $600 dress which is comparable to a $3,000 gown. Tina says with Wanna Wear, “Women can dress like movie stars, but not cut back on fit, style and quality.”

More Ways to save Shop off season: Call it “Budget Conscious,” “Recessionista” “Frugal Fashion-Maven,” whatever, but shopping off season is the smartest way to add to your wardrobe and save your pennies. Buying bikinis in the blistery months and scarves in the summer is truly the way to go. Classic looks never go out of style, so it’s a guarantee that the pieces on clearance now will be re-hashed at a higher price point next season. Shop thrift and vintage stores: Some of the best finds are gently used or come with a bit of history. Vintage stores offer unique pieces that can really enhance modern styles and eliminate the chances of seeing your outfit on someone else. As for thrift stores, oftentimes, they’ll keep a small selection of designer handbags and accessories. So that Chanel bag you’ve always wanted can be yours after all. Attend or host a swap party: Shop til you drop? No, swap til you drop. This is a fantastic way to get a few fresh pieces and purge your old ones. Gather a group of your most stylish girlfriends, let everyone know to bring a minimum of five items--this means clothes, shoes and accessories. The one rule, things must be clean and in good condition. Make a playlist, serve some cocktails and marvel over your new “purchases.” Shop sample sales: Sample sales have to be one of fashion’s best kept secrets. Sample
sales offer fashion-hungry gals an opportunity to score big name and indie designer pieces sometimes at 80% off the retail price. From handbags to tunics, leggings to coats and everything in between, you can find it all at a sample sale. And because the savings are so great you’ll often walk away with a piece you love in three different colors. This is a great way to support upcoming designers and a perfect way to spend a Saturday. Shop the outlets: We’re kind of spoiled in the IE and have one of the best outlets at our fingertips. So it’s only right that we take advantage of the amazing stores at Cabazon. It’s a twenty minute drive for most and offering savings up to 50% off retail. Where else
can you score a DVF, Theory, Michael Kors, Marni and Jimmy Choo without going for broke? Shop the Lake Elsinore Outlet too as it’s doubling over with sytlish goods. And we can’t ignore Ontario Mills, who plays home to J. Crew, Cole Hann and Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th. Local Locales: Some of the IE’s most stylish consignment shops My Girlfriend’s Closet 27520 Ynez Rd #D3, Temecula; 951-695-4685 Savvy Seconds 140 Hidden Valley Parkway, Suite C, Norco; 951-817-3060 Deja Vu Fashions 994 W Foothill Blvd., Claremont; 909-625-7277
