In microcosm, open spaces function like in a city: microcosm has a public park that acts as an oasis for people from surroundings, it has private areas that are defined with porous boundaries and can be adjusted but also highly dependent on the time of the year, sun and wind, and most importantly it has community spaces of various use: active children playground to encourage co-parenting, community farm – to encourage sharing and taking care and lively streets that stimulate the development of a self-sustained community. IMPORTANCE OF THE FORGOTTEN.

Year:

2019

Course:

Design studio III (track: culture history)

Type:

Project focus:

city & public space

Location:

Rotterdam ,The Netherlands

Context:

The Tarwewijk, Rotterdam was built in the first half of the twentieth century, in the first phases for dock workers, later also for the middle class. From a stagnant provincial port in the nineteenth century, it was on the way to becoming the largest port in the world. In a relatively short period of time, a completely new district was created Rotterdam - Zuid. For various reasons, parts of Rotterdam-South have been struggling with social inequality and poverty for a long time. This problem is currently seen as very urgent.

Objective:

Research into the place development over time is central. Working on a basis of a value assessment of existing objects and structures as well as considering the future value of this in combination with new qualities that are to come. 11

IMPORTANCE OF THE FORGOTTEN Importance of the forgotten is a project that is based on in-depth historical research of surrounding urban fabric. The focus lies on the urban spaces of a housing complex. The plan of the housing complex consists of two parts that are connected/divided by a green boulevard. Green boulevard is a recreation of a historical street - Dordsestraatweg- that was of both cultural and historical importance for the citizens living in the area (see the following page for analysis). The boulevard acts as a connection/division of the two building blocks and therefore becomes powerful in between space. Other outdoor areas are designed according to the historical ground structure (so-called polders). The first type of space is a community-centered garden. The community garden is located as an inner patio and has a centralized vegetation lane. The vegetation lane acts as a foundation for neighborhood interaction as well as for a sense of privacy – it creates a visual separation between two households living on different sides of the lane. Privacy is not determined but fluctuating since there is no fixed barrier. Patio, therefore, stimulates inhabitants to be receptive to nature/ environment and find stillness and harmony inside or interpret it themselves. The second urban space is an oasis of the city. Tranquility oasis grants freedom and breath in urban surroundings by making use of an open layout, not predefined sitting spaces, and using nature as a shelter. It allows visitors to interpret their stillness and immerse themselves in it, even when surrounded by the busyness of the urbanity. Opening to thoughts and being surrounded by elements that have a historical value, a place makes an individual find peace while being enclosed by memories of the city. Materialization, vegetation, and use of water elements make this space a place and strengthens genius loci.

the gradient of disappearance

Analysis portrays periods and forms in which the street has disappeared from the spatial structure of the city. The first analysis (from the top) illustrates how the development of the built environment has influenced the phenomena. The second is a landscape analysis and shows how the ground structure has changed in time and caused it to evaporate. The third analysis shows how historical buildings from 1903 have faded with time, and when they were no more marking the Dordsestraatweg.

Context:

Nexus World Housing consists of two housing blocks in the Kashi district of Fukuoka, Japan. It is designed for an urban renewal project which asked seven international architects were to make a design for a new one urban way of life. The houses consist of three storeys and each has its own vertical patio through which light and air can enter the whole house to achieve.

Objective:

Perform a research about Nexus Housing in Fukuoka and develop model that would represent architecture and the context behind it. 15

NEXUS HOUSING: REIMAGINED

El Croquis, 1992 Analysis of Nexus Housing in Fukuoka (designed by OMA | Rem Koolhaas) has revealed several essential elements that are explored by this model: traditional layout of Japanese houses, which in the case of Nexus is situated vertically in place of horizontally; roof dynamics corresponding to the surrounding landscape, skin binding the complex, patio in every dwelling acting as a central, connecting space, and a concrete ramp as a significant element of the entrance and a symbol of verticality.

ECOTONE.

Year:

2018

Course:

Design studio I

Type:

individual

Project focus:

house and integration in landscape

Location:

The Hague ,The Netherlands

Context:

The South Holland landscape has a rich variety of landscape types. The different landscape types are divided among the student groups. Each group has its own demarcated area that serves as a context for the assignment. The exact location for the house is not initially given, this place must be found by researching the landscape. The choice of location can be determined by, among other things, the view, accessibility, shelter, location in relation to the road, water, trees, the existing property boundaries and the surrounding buildings.

Objective:

This design must be anchored in a given landscape using landscape architectural and architectural means. The range of interior, exterior, garden and landscape is discussed in its entirety. The aim of the assignment is therefore to design a small, 19 detached holiday home and the surrounding garden in the South Holland landscape.

ECOTONE

The project unfolds a picturesque landscape full of diverse occurrences on the way to the endpoint – a private oasis. In a landscape of wetland, between terrestrial and aquatic, oasis finds itself on the transition. The transiting landscape acts as a very strong field of in between, negative space of Ma – an empty space. The negative, in-between space is all about perception, it is space yet to be fulfilled, a pause in the movement. The transition happens in several dimensions: between water and land, between enclosed by the landscape and exposed, between sky and ground, between order and chaos. The feeling of in-betweenness is strengthened by designing a residence (earlier ‘oasis’) that is fully defined by nature. Changing nature is defining privacy, shadow and light are defining the pace of activity. Architecture is thin and light, facades display rhythmicity and order, materials are raw and unprocessed, thresholds are invisible. The place is open to perception and finding inner stillness.

20

ECOTONE

There are three types of buildings designed for the area. Two round residence houses that differ in size and amount of personal amenities; and one building for shared facilities. Landscape route is an significant experience - path as apreparation for the catharsis.

The station for “Roboats” (designed by AMS and MIT) has to become a remembrance for something that is from the future - was never built before. The future is not certain and it is the change that defines what is to come. The concept of change is the focus of this project. Transparency and curvatures form abstraction that creates continuity of space. The liquidity of space generates uncertainty and awareness of constant change. On the other hand, the subtle play with light, shadow, and reflection results in the imagery of the historic urban environment. The Roboat station acts as the monument for the future with a reflection of the past.

Context:

The number of inhabitants in Rotterdam has grown considerably in recent years and is expected to increase further in the coming years. To facilitate this growth, 50,000 homes must be built by 2040. The challenge for Rotterdam is to use this growth as an engine for transition tasks in the areas of mobility, climate and energy, while making the city more livable and attractive.

Objective:

An integrated approach, in which the construction of new homes goes hand in hand with investments in accessibility, new employement opportunities, attractive and green outdoor space and facilities, is required.

future inclusive city. An inclusive city is the one that values all people and their needs equally and involves a complex web of multiple spatial, social, and economic factors (“Inclusive Cities, 2020). To prevent economic exclusion, I aim to create job opportunities for all, while giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of economic growth. To prevent social exclusion, I am seeking to bring together diverse groups, from different cultural backgrounds, with different prosperities, and with different capabilities. I believe it is important to allow all of them to be heard and participate in the community. I want to enhance the concept of the neighborhood and preserve the current identity of the area. To prevent unjust access, I aim to create spatial inclusiveness. I aspire to design interventions that enhance the idea of a community, public spaces that everyone will be able to identify with, bridges that will bring everyone together. I strive for a city accessible to everyone, where the proximity of daily needs is guaranteed. I seek affordable housing solutions that include everyone, diverse architectural styles to appeal to every different background, and to replace hard borders with soft boundaries.

Redeveloping A-Z from a human eye perspective with the ultimate goal of increasing the sense of inclusiveness of the users in the three aspects: spatial, social & economic while future-proofing the city and retaining its local identity. Importantly, we perceive the development as a consequential process meaning we start from a small change and aim for a bigger one. Therefore, our urban strategy for De Esch will be a showcase for the city of Rotterdam, the region of ZuidHolland, and The Netherlands as a whole.

parametric design

Location:

The Hague, The Netherlands

Context:

A fictional design task for a museum Het Escher in The Hague, The Netherlands. The Escher museum wants to expand with a sculpture garden although an extension at the back is not possible due to available space. An expansion at the front is also problem because the building is adjacent to the historic square: Lange Voorhout. Therefore, the sculpture garden is required to be hidden in the ground.

Objective:

By using parametric design techniques such as LadyBug, Grasshopper, Rhino and Enscape come up with a balanced architectural solution that would meet the requirements of the client. 32

THE HIDDEN LANDSCAPE.

The Hidden Landscape is a spatial intervention to the city center of The Hague - a public garden. It functions as a sculpture park and an entrance to the De Escher museum. The garden itself consists of two main elements: artificial topography and a roof that makes the most optimal use of sunlight and shadow.
