FROM THE PRESIDENT.... I don’t know about you but I’m relieved it’s finally Summer. This past Winter and Spring was a blur of activity. I saw IFDA members bustling around the hottest trade shows, gearing up to participate in various charity events, flexing their creative muscle at Design On A Dime, Kips Bay, and our very own Take A Seat program, which included a full-scale exhibition at ICFF this year. I also saw a lot of diligent note-taking as experts talked trends and shared a glimpse into the future of home. Right, so did I mention I’m glad it’s Summer? EF Steps Back into NY History: IFDA Walking Tour Supports Valerie Moran Grant by Susan Hirsch, NY VP Educational Foundation Taking 400 years of New York City history literally in stride this month, IFDA Educational Foundation (EF) led an architectural tour through the Lower Manhattan neighborhood where NY really began, visiting landmarks and revisiting the history, people, and events that power Wall Street today. Led by a professional historian, the IFDA group toured the Beaux Arts US Custom House, grand old bank building with 40-foot granite columns and elaborate detailing, the Greco-Roman Federal Hall, NY Stock Exchange, and sites associated with 18th century slave uprisings. The tour ended at Trinity Church, whose history traces to the 1690s (originally built with help from Captain William Kidd, the pirate). The present, gloriously Gothic church dates from 1846 and has one of the few cemeteries in Manhattan. The walking tour raised funds for the Valerie Moran Grant Fund, established by the NY Chapter in memory of innovator, designer, merchandiser, and business leader, Valerie Moran, FIFDA. Valerie was a past president of the NY Chapter and a Circle of Excellence recipient in 1998. Special thanks to Leslie Young and Cliff Young Ltd. for their generous contribution to the Valerie Moran Grant Fund. For more information or to make contributions, go to ifdaef.org or send a check to IFDA-EF 2401 Harbor Island Road, New Bern, NC 28562. IFDA/EF is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. 2

IFDA NY IN ACTION Talk about having new spring in our step! After that winter of everyone's discontent, IFDA shifted into high gear with a series of Springtime events that also engaged the larger design community. We raised spirits and we raised funds for worthy causes like Habitat for Humanity. We raised our glasses, too, making IFDA the toast of the industry with such projects as IFDA Selects and our escorted tour into the "Future of Home" in Material ConneXion's library of dazzling new resources. We also scored a standing ovation for our third annual Take A Seat gala auction, celebrating the Pygmalion pleasures of upcycling old and odd seating pieces. Now that it's summer, the livin' may be easy, but it's still filled with must-do events (check the calendar on page 2 for upcoming options). GLIMPSING THE FUTURE AT MATERIAL CONNEXION — We have seen the future -- thanks to the spectacular event at Material ConneXion in May -- and it is all about design. The panel of expert prognosticators assembled by moderator Hermine Mariaux laid out 10 big coming ideas and influencers. Dr. Andrew H. Dent, Material ConneXion's VP Library and Materials Research head, cited sugar, the connected home, and soft and hard surfaces. Matilda McQuaid, Deputy Curatorial Director, Head of Textiles for CooperHewitt, saluted technology's impact on textiles; and Leslie Clagett, founder of KB Culture, discussed new appliances and multifunctional surfaces. (Ask the IFDA office for the detailed list of their Big Ideas.) IFDA SELECTS THE BEST IN SHOWS — Teams of industry experts judged The Best at the Architectural Digest Home Show, ICFF, and Brooklyn Designs.

ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST HOME SHOW: ABOUT TO PASS JUDGMENT (from left): Andrea Algaze, Hermine Mariaux, Andrea Brodfuehrer, Julie Schuster, Claudia Giselle Tejeda, Caterine Wright, Stacy Garcia, Dwayne Clark

ICFF: SEEKING IFDA WINNERS — Judges panel includes (from left) Atsuko Mayachi, Yasue Ishikawa, Michael Tavano, Deborah Martin, Andrea Algaze, MANSION IN MAY -- The spectacular 30 x 60 ft. drawing Andrea Brodfuehrer, Gregory Allan Cramer, and room James created in the Turn-of-the-Century Beaux Maureen Klein Arts mansion, Blairsden, wowed the record crowd who viewed the 2014 showhouse, which raised $2 million for the Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey.

BROOKLYN DESIGNS: SET TO SELECT THE BEST — Judges Scott Hohl, Patricia Fox, Andrea Brodfeuhrer, Wendy Silverstein, Rose Ott, Nancy Fire, Richard Segal, Tracey Steele, and Claudia Gisele Tejeda.

IFDA IN ACTION TAKE A SEAT TAKES ANOTHER BOW -- How can you turn an old chair into a new house? IFDA wizards, along with New York Cottages & Gardens, did it for the third time last month, up-cycling derelict seating pieces into dazzling works of art and artifice that raised funds for Habitat for Humanity New York. With 26 imaginative chairs on the auction block at Safavieh Home Furnishings, "We reached our $10,000 goal," reports Committee co-chair Maureen Klein. And for Chapter members, friends, and admirers who first saw the chairs on display at the ICFF, the fun that fueled the third annual TAS gala was simply priceless.

Vivian Rosenberg, student member, expects to graduate from the New York School of Interior Design with a BFA next spring. An internship at Michele Bitter Designs gave her a taste of "reallife" projects, Vivi reports. She is also a member of IFDA, ASID, and IIDA.

Amanda Foran, who says she early-on realized her calling in design, followed that calling to earn her Associates Degree in Interior Design at FIT in 2011. Working in the industry led her to her "true passion," home products, so she is currently back at FIT, working toward a BA in Home Products Development, graduating next May. Introduced to IFDA at a FIT Home Products club, Amanda volunteered for several events and has now become a student member.

IFDA Spotlight On:

Stacy Garcia Stacy Garcia is out to make the world feel at-home, both at-home and traveling to the many hospitality sites outfitted in her signature bold colors and unexpected designs. Chapter Gold Sponsor, uber designer, and (as it says on her business card) Founder and Chief Inspiration Officer of the two thriving fashion companies she's built since her 26th birthday, Stacy sees design "as a form of communication, a language. "At the end of the day, design is about wanting to feel connected," she SETTING A FANCIFUL TABLE -- Stacy Garcia waxed imaginative with her new believes. "If you are part of a tribe of ‘Paper Muse’ Collection for York Wallcoverings at DIFFA’s ‘Dining By Design.’ people, you feel more connected." Which is exactly why she decided to connect with IFDA, Stacy says. She had scored big in hospitality design with LebaTex, the commercial textile supplier named for her great-grandmother, Leba, that soon became de rigueur for five-star hotels and resorts across the globe. In 2004, she spun off the Stacy Garcia design house, a global lifestyle brand producing designs for textiles and carpeting, wallcoverings, lighting, furniture, and more. Earlier this year, she launched "Stacy Garcia New York," her signature luxury residential collection. So, Stacy recalls, "We were looking around for a group to align with. We looked at other organizations -- I'm a member of multiple industry organizations. What I loved about IFDA is that it offers cross-pollination. You get different view-points. And the people had so ‘WILD POPPIES’ LIVE UP TO THE NAME -- Stacy’s New York much energy, so much passion!" Collection by York Wallcoverings

Both of which Stacy herself has plenty. Born in Guadalajara, a descendent of German, Russian, and Polish immigrants, she took her BFA in Surface Pattern Design from Syracuse U and studied textile design at Central St. Martins in London. Then she was off on her career path, working for Ralph Lauren's Home Collection and Richloom Contract fabrics before going on her own. Today, Stacy's design "tribe" is peopled with trend and color experts -- she's a Chairholder at the Color Marketing Group -- plus, hands-on artists like engravers and loom technicians. "I'm inspired by the designers, manufacturers, and individuals with whom I work," Stacy says. "And I hope to empower others to have the confidence to make their own connections and creations -- in design and in life."

REMEMBERING FLORA PORRAS (1961 - 2015) Exuberant and fun, vibrant and energetic, creative, caring, and devoted to IFDA, Flora Porras will be remembered in many important ways as the New York Chapter mourns her sudden death from a brain aneurysm in June. Born in the Lima Province in Peru and forever proud of Peruvian culture and traditions, Flora came to the US in the 1980’s. She traveled with Heddy, her sister, to become nanny to Jessie and Michael Chance, children of a family in Westchester, New York, who now have children of their own. She stayed for some 10 years, teaching the youngsters many valuable lessons and making incredible costumes for them every Halloween -one of Flora’s favorite holidays. Recognizing her artistic talents, the family arranged for her to attend art classes, which is where she first met IFDA’s Christine Jeanquier. “Her paintings were colorful, reflecting with poetry the soul of the people and country she loved so much. Two years later, I organized her first exhibition in Larchmont and sold everything!” Christine recalls.

loved parties, and creating the products that America would find at their local retailers. She gave back in her community, too-- volunteering at her local soup kitchen and working endless hours to help restore the rich woodwork in her 150-yearold White Plains church. Flora loved the IFDA Educational Foundation walks, and just this month had signed up for the walking tour of downtown New York. She never showed. By then she was already planning the best party ever in heaven. Flora, we miss you, and can only imagine the fabulous costume you must be wearing to that heavenly fiesta.

Christine moved around the world after that, but credits IFDA with helping them to reconnect 30 years later. They even planned to create a chair together for Take a Seat last year before work got too busy. By then, Flora was Senior Concept Designer at Amscam Inc. -- she’d been spotted by someone from the company when she was taking those art lessons 17 years earlier.

Generous with her time, joining many IFDA special event committees over the last 11 years, always adding sparkle, charm and creative touches, Flora
