Introduction of IFMSA For more than 60 years, IFMSA has existed and been led by medical students worldwide. The International Federation of Medical Students‟ Associations (IFMSA) was founded in 1951. It is the world‟s oldest and largest independent organization representing associations of medical students internationally. It currently maintains 123 National Member Organizations from more than 100 countries across six continents with over 1.3 million students represented worldwide. IFMSA is recognized as a non-governmental organization within the United Nations‟ system and the World Health Organization and as well, it works with the World Medical Association. IFMSA was created to impact the world and to empower its members in taking their vision and ideas, and making them a reality. IFMSA has inspired generations of medical students to develop the leadership abilities and skills to take on challenges and to improve the world around them in a crucial period of their career. Engaging in IFMSA encourages both professional and personal collaborations irrespective of geographical, social, cultural, religious, racial, sexual and political differences. As a result, future doctors are becoming more culturally aware and sensitive physicians.
Vision: A world in which all medical students unite for global health and are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to take on health leadership roles locally and globally.
Mission: IFMSA unites medical students worldwide to lead initiatives that impact positively the communities we serve. IFMSA represents the opinions and ideas of future health professionals in the field of global health, and works in collaboration with external partners. IFMSA builds capacity through training, project and exchanges opportunities, while embracing cultural diversity so as to shape a sustainable and healthy future.
Aims:
To expose all medical students to humanitarian and health issues, providing them with the opportunity to education themselves and their peers; To facilitate partnerships between the medical students' community and international organization working on health, education and social issues; To give all medical students the opportunity to take part in clinical and research exchange around the world; To provide a network that links active medical students across the globe, including student leaders, project managers and activists, so that they can learn from and be motivated by each other; To provide an international framework in which medical student projects can be realized; To empower and train medical students to become advocates in leading social change.
Introduction to IFMSA-Pakistan IFMSA-Pakistan is member of the IFMSA since 2001 and promotes and facilitates international co-operation in professional training and to contribute to the development of culturally aware and socially responsible physicians. IFMSA Pakistan kicked off in 2001, God bless those seniors who left us with an amazing legacy that today IFMSA Pakistan stands as a full member of IFMSA having voting, proposing and Speaking rights in IFMSA International General Assembly. IFMSA Pakistan is currently growing exponentially, having established local councils in Medical Colleges in almost all the Big cities of Pakistan including Lahore, Peshawar, Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Abbottabad along with many medical colleges which are at verge of joining us as established local councils from Karachi, Swat, Kohat, Mardan, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Multan and many other cities where we have our Sub LCs. IFMSA Pakistan is itself a big family which links us not only on a local level but also helps grow the bond of belonging together nationally. We all work together but miles apart, hence that's why to grow the ties and to consolidate our togetherness, we welcome every medical student out there to attend this national General Assembly.
IFMSA Pakistan is famous for its impactful and influential projects throughout the nation hence the introduction to standing committees is a must ... following the international pattern.
SCOPH (standing committee of public health) Dealing with issues of public awareness and playing the role of an ideal medical student, our SCOPH heroes make sure to serve the nation.
SCOME (standing committee of medical education) Dealing with the advancements and much required training of medical student.
SCORP (standing committee of human rights and peace) Dealing with the much needed situation in Pakistan, helping refugees, IDPs and the underprivileged.
SCORA (standing committee of reproductive health and AIDS) Dealing with the alarming increase in maternal mortality and spreading awareness in general public for safe sex.
SCOPE (standing committee of Professional exchange) Dealing with conveying opportunities to medical students for a healthy professional growth.
SCORE (Standing committee of research exchange) Dealing with providing the best research oriented exchanges present internationally, inculcating the spirit of research.
National General Assembly Introduction: National General Assemblies are designed for National IFMSA wings of each country so that the medical students of that region can gain access to a platform where they can share and advocate their ideas and opinions. IFMSA through the umbrella of National General Assembly provides all the attendees a forum to gain knowledge from their seniors, colleagues and juniors. Great minds of the cream of the nation exchanging ideas, imagine the productivity of such a session! With this vision, IFMSA-Pakistan has decided to hold National General Assembly for IFMSAians of Pakistan. GA‟15, where Pakistan‟s medical student will be represented by IFMAian leaders, will feature meetings of each Standing Committee, President Sessions, plenary sessions, theme event and training session for skills development and capacity building. The IFMSA‟s General Assembly hopes to inspire the next generation of future physicians to become leaders and advocates through exchange of ideas, networking and learning from the various programming sessions.
EVENT DATES: February 13th to 15th, 2015 (Friday to Sunday)
Venue: Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore.
Address: Allama Shabbir Ahmed Usmani Road,, Lahore, Pakistan-54550.
Theme: The most awaited event of IFMSA-Pakistan fraternity, the GA is finally here. But hold your horses, because the spectacular event brings to you all the information loaded platter wrapped up in a ribbon under the theme of “Awareness”. We as medical students, should remain in a state of constant awareness about everything, be it any public health problem, new researches, experiments, medical education and health conferences. But the question remains, do we? Most of us would be nodding our head from right to left in a sad dismay indicating a “No”. Thus, IFMSA has taken up this theme because in our country Pakistan, the awareness level of a layman is below par. The part of the world where we live has so many diseases lurking around the corner, and the pace at which they spread can all be attributed to the lack of awareness. With the new dawn, more and more diseases are taking birth and breeding in different areas of the place. Strains of different organisms are becoming more and more resistant and for that newer drugs are being experimented as I write this. So, if the doctors and clinicians are unaware of the new researches that are taking place in this world, then there is NO use of new advancements. Because that way, the clinicians will treat the patients with the outdated methods and treatments and the patients are going to suffer, ultimately risking the lives of the people we serve at stake. Global Health is an important issue which cannot be undermined at all. Because in this global era, everything solely depends on new researches and works in the medical field and then passing them on to fellow colleagues and the general public. And if we don‟t do that then we‟re still going to be handcuffed in the old era and would just have to rely on the conservative measures which would bring down the whole country. Which brings us to the previous point; we are a community. We all have the same school of thoughts, same perceptions and practices. The whole concept of awareness, researches and making a difference can be done by doing simple acts. And who better to guide a common man about various public health problems than a person in field of medicine. IFMSA is bringing together all the people from this noble profession to come together and join hands to create awareness about the numerous health problems and researches and to come up with solutions to overcome these in order to make this country and world a better place to live and to etch a pathway for the future generations to come to tread on.
EVENTS: After a warm welcome and proper introduction, the NGA‟15 sessions will commence. The main target of the officials is to hit these main topics in the sessions:
Awareness about IFMSA: History and The Golden Opportunities provided by this federation. IFMSA Pakistan lost its rich history somewhere in this society of hustle and bustle. The need of the hour is to reconnect to the roots and gain what we lost over the course of time. With this mindset, IFMSAians will be taught the true essence of the letters I.F.M.S.A.
MM2015 Turkey Delegation: Our representatives in International GA. IFMSA-Pakistan‟s delegates to MM2015 will be introduced and IFMSAians from all over the country can seize the opportunity to interact with them and learn the qualities that make one worthy enough to represent the cream of your nation in the world beyond our borders. Turkey Delegation members will also be trained by the senior IFMSAian officials. We need our representatives to be the best to make us proud, don‟t‟ we?
Training Sessions: They say everybody makes major decisions after a complete thinking process hence a man should be judged by his minor actions and decisions, because that‟s what makes him different from the regular crowd. So even minute stuff, like your Email-writing style to the energy you radiate while working in a team, can make a huge difference in your careers. And that‟s why we are here! Senior IFMSAians will teach you all the skills needed to pave your way through this crowded world.
All work and No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy You will not have to sit in a chair all day, trust us on that. The OC has panned many fun activities for the attendees, including excursion trips around Lahore, the cultural heart of Pakistan.
Global Surgery Global Surgery is a health issue which caught the attention of the world recently. Poor countries often get medications through NGOs but surgical care is touching the zero –line. The lack of surgical care leads to many casualties each year, around the globe. On 26th May 2014, the WHO Executive Board unanimously passed the EB Agenda Item “Strengthening Emergency and Essential Surgical Care and Anesthesia as a Component of Universal Health Coverage” for a resolution at the 68th World Health Assembly in May 2015. IFMSA-Pakistan plans to make Global Surgery an important talking point in NGA‟15. The lack of surgical facilities in Pakistan and the world will be addressed.
Open Access: Access to research is student right and no student should be denied access to the research they need. Open Access seeks to return scholarly publishing to its original purpose: to spread knowledge and allow that knowledge to be built upon. Price barriers should not prevent students (or anyone) from getting access to the research they need. Open Access, and the open availability and searchability of scholarly research that it entails, will have a significant positive impact on everything from education to the practice of medicine to the ability of entrepreneurs to innovate. IFMSA-Pakistan has become the advocate in promoting Open Access in coalition with Right to Research last year. Why open access is important for medical students and how we can take part in this paradigm shift from close to open world will be addressed in the General Assembly
Plenary Session: Plenary is the decision making body in the General Assembly. Important decisions regarding functioning and structure of the organization will be addressed and elections of new team will take place in the session. The candidates will present their candidature and after an Executive Board Debate, general elections will be held to select the new team.
Color Day: To exhibit the concept of „Harmony in Discordâ€&#x; the standing committees will be wearing an assigned color dress code on the last day of the event. Seeing human beings around us dressed in a similar attire helps you appreciate the beauty of human race; human beings, essentially the same but yet so uniquely different. So be sure to have a dress ready of the color of your favorite standing committee!

Lahore Shehr-e-Zinda Dil (City of live-hearted): A sneak peek into the city! Lahore is the cultural center of Pakistan. It was once the capital of the Mughal Empire, then the Sikh Empire, and then the Punjab province under the British Raj. That's the Lahore that first entered my youthful consciousness, the Lahore of Kim, Kipling's most famous novel, which depicts the adventures of a precocious urchin on Lahore's treacherous streets at the height of the Great Game. Pakistanis love Lahore. They say you haven't been born until you have been there. Sometimes they become so tongue tied trying to describe the wonderful chaos of Lahore that they sigh and simply say Laâ€&#x;ore Laâ€&#x;ore aei; Lahore is Lahore.
Lahore has many attractions to keep you busy. Minar-e-Pakistan, Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque and Shalimar Gardens are some of key Lahore attractions. The Mall is lined with colonial-gothic buildings from the British rule, mausolea of Jehangir and Nur Jehan, Chauburji Gate, walled city and the suburbs of Gulberg and Defence feature beautiful mansions and trendy shopping districts. Lahore is also home to many British colonial structures built in the Indo-Saracenic style, such as the Lahore High Court, the General Post Office, Lahore Museum, Lahore Railway Station, and many older
universities and colleges including the University of the Punjab, Govt College and King Edward Medical college. The Lahore Zoo (1872), which is the fourth oldest in the world and 2ng largest in South Asia is also situated here.
Lahore is known is the city of gardens. It has many beautiful parks and gardens including Shalimar Gardens, Lawrence Gardens, Hazuri Bagh, Iqbal Park, Mochi Bagh, Gulshan Iqbal Park, Model Town Park, Race Course Park, Nasir Bagh Lahore, Jallo Park, Wild Life Park, and Bagh-e-Jinnah. A visit to these mystic homes
of nature will be very reviving. Itâ€&#x;s a city full of foodies too. Food streets established at Gawalmandi, Anarkali, and Fort Road are amazing. MM Alam Road has wonderful modern resturants with breathtaking interiors.
Shopping Spots include Liberty, Anarkali, and Fortress Square. Liberty has some amazing bookshops for the book lovers. Free after the GA session take your friends, sit in a cab and Lahore will welcome you with arms wide open from Joy Land to DHA Cinema, Battlefield Paintball to Bahria Town and Sozo World to X-Park.
For transportation you can use the metro bus service within the city. The stops are Gajju Matah , Dhulam, Youhanabad, Nishtar, Attari Darbar, Kamahan, Ammar Sadhu, General Hospital, Walton, Phatak, Children Hospital, Bhabra, Model Town, Kalma Chowk, Gaddafi Stadium, Muslim Town, Ichra, Shama, Mazang, Janazgah, Jain Mandir, Secretariat, Data Darbar, Ravi Road1, Ravi Road 2 , Shahdra.
This February, come and join us in Lahore in this mega event filled with interactive sessions and professional opportunities, wrapped up as best amalgam fun and knowledge! We are very much looking forward to welcoming you here. For any queries, please write to us at: Ga.ifmsa.pakistan@gmail.com
