SCOPH Strategic Plan 2018-2021 Dear SCOPHeroes, The Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH) relies on the input of its members to shape the work of the next terms. Due to not having unlimited resources in the IFMSA, we are forced to focus on a limited number of elements to guide our work. These elements are defined by SCOPH members, because the work of the IT is for the SCOPH members. The reason why the strategy is a 3-year plan is to ensure continuity of the work of the SCOPH International Teams, and a stable development of the Standing Committee, through the various changes in leadership. As follows is the summary of the 3 main pillars the SCOPH will be focusing on during the next 3 years, and the relevant indicators of success. NOTE:​ there are no ‘day-to-day’ activities in this Strategic Plan, as we assume these will be already included in the SCOPH Ds’ Annual Working Plans throughout the various terms (e.g. sending documents, creating manuals, organizing webinars,...)

Here we go! 1. Continuity of Activities, Participation and Tracking of Impact: Ensuring quality of our activities in the long term and measuring the impact our activity has achieved affects our present and future work. A large part of the sustainability of activities is also the transfer of knowledge and skills in the form of a well implemented handover. In this way our work can be picked up by other SCOPHeroes without interruptions or mistakes that could be easily prevented. a. Action point​: Construct a map with current and old NPOs/Activity Coordinators/PSDDs’ experience/contacts/interests. This map will include at least 100 contacts. i.

Indicators of success​: 1. Number of Contact Persons added to the map 2. Number of Contact Persons contacted by others/Number of times the map is viewed


3. Number of different domains the Contact Persons are experienced in (Program Topics / General SCOPH Activity) b. Action point: Construct an Activity Database in the form of a map, including contact information and recorded impact. This map will include at least 100 Activities, divided by dates. i.

Indicators of success: 1. Number of Activities added to the map 2. Number of consultations of the map, and contact taken with the Activity Coordinators.

c. Action point: Organize a consultation process with experts to review contents of SCOPH standard sessions such as Activity Planning. i.

Indicators of success: 1. Hours of work performed by experts, in regards to SCOPH resources 2. Number of experts contributing to SCOPH resources

d. Action point: Train at least one member/NMO in basic and advanced Activity Planning as well as basic methods of evaluation, ensure quality through standard examination - ensure the method used will be able to be repeated in the next terms. i.

Indicators of success: 1. Number of trained “Activity Planning Advisors”

e. Action point: ​Identify a series of grants that could be beneficial to the SCOPH, as well as develop a plan for continuous crowdfunding. i.

Indicators of success: 1. Amount of money earned by the SC 2. Number of Grant Applications sent by the SCOPH IT

f.

Action point: ​Ensure each new NPO receives a proper handover i.

Indicators of success: 1. Number of NPOs who report receiving appropriate handover 2. Change in number/way of NPOs requesting handover materials, etc.


g. Action point: Create a Social Media/Networking plan to increase information flow and interactivity between the International and Local realities i.

Indicators of Success: 1. Increase in number of likes / comments on Facebook posts/ 2. Number of responses to surveys/call for input 3. Increase in basic knowledge about the SCOPH among all SCOPHeroes worldwide 4. Change in number/way of people asking for more information about where to find information about the SC 5. Number of SCOPHero activities that have been showcased throughout the term

2. Public Health in the Medical Curriculum SCOPHeroes have been advocating to increase the depth of knowledge and application of Public Health topics in their medical curriculum. Sadly, in many programs Public Health, Community and Family Medicine are not given enough attention to cover all the needs of medical students, as well as the future challenges as health professionals. Not only, but most of the times the methods Public Health is taught with are strongly lacking in helping to develop students' interest. a. Action point: ​Gain expertise and insight into teaching Public Health in Universities (consultation with experts, SWG,...) i.

Indicators of success: 1. List of recommendations on the teaching of Public Health (for Universities) 2. List of important topics to be addressed in any Public Health programme 3. List of methods to be used to increase the sense of duty and motivation towards Public Health and Community Medicine

b. Action point: ​Construct and activate an Advocacy plan (including training local delegates) to be used to approach universities worldwide

Indicators of success: 1. Number of Public Health modules including resources 2. Number of trained Public Health Advocates (yes I refuse to call them Trainers) 3. Number of performed Sessions worldwide based on SCOPH resources

3. Interprofessional Collaboration Interprofessional collaboration in its simplest form is the practice of approaching work from a team-based perspective, where the team consists of healthcare professionals from different fields, as well as other practitioners, communities and even patients. Growing a collaborative approach between multiple parties and disciplines can lead to highly effective work outcomes as well as an increased knowledge base for everyone. The transfer of knowledge and involvement of others leads to better results and better patient care because of the wholesome insight into the issues tackled. a. Action Point: Recruit (create a plan for their involvement and how the two parties can benefit each other) students from other relevant study fields to aid the SCOPH in positions that could benefit from interdisciplinary approaches (economy, media,...): i.

Indicators of success:


1. Number of active non-medical students in the International SCOPH activities 2. Number of non-medical students who have expressed interest in getting involved in SCOPH activities 3. Number of non-medical students who have attended International or National events (SRTs, Workshops, Meetings,...)
