COLLECTION NOTE
AMALGAM-"a curious amalgam of the traditional and the modern" - My inspiration for this project stems from the powerful Indian dress, the saree and the idea of unity in diversity. These are two ideas which has long inspired me to work upon. It is interesting to know the closeness of both the ideas. Almost every woman in india wears a saree. Every state has a different way of wearing a saree. A different drape, different fall, different falls and yet in the end, it is a saree; a dress that binds all the women into a sense of belonging. India is a country that thrives in diversity. It has managed to coexist with all sort of ideas, peacefully. Everyone is bound by understanding and love where in the end, the sense of togetherness binds all to a sense of belonging. As a designer, I believe that there is an abundance of creative potentials that can be dug out of our heritage and especially out of the above said ideas. Sarees have an interesting feeling of drapes. It offers innumerous possibilities of a unique drape style. This when closely weaved with the idea of contemporary art and globalization produces a new breed of silhouettes; a new era of sarees. The notion of 'class' as you think through an international perspective comes through gowns and while you think through an indian eye, comes through a saree. This made me realize the possibility of creation of a fresh breed of sarees. Fusing sarees with gowns to conceive a new dress altogether. This overlays itself with the notion of 'unity in diversity'. The sense of belonging thus extends to more than one country but the whole world. My collection will explore drapes in sarees and the lines it forms over a body; studying thus, the possibility of a new drape and integrating it into a more global form. The fundamental idea is a 'saree cum gown'. A saree that transforms to a gown. It is a form of osmosis between two sets of 'class'. The colors for this collection is very much inspired by the various spices that India is widely known for. The sweet and vibrant colors of these spices pave a path for aesthetic appeal.
