Incremental Reclamation Kate Orff - Design Studio Jamaica Bay represents a case study of 19th and early 20th century conceptions of infrastructure and nature. It receives treated wastewater and excess nitrogen from four sewage plants, it was collared by Robert Moses’ 8 lane wide Belt Parkway (pictured below) it was dumped on in the form of three landfills, it hosts JFK (one of the world’s busiest airports, which is in dire need of expansion) the abandoned Floyd Bennett Airfield, and it is lined by NYCHA housing blocks and fishing villages. Incremental reclamation works on the ever ignored nitrogen polluted waters of the bay, while proposing a system of Ribbed mussel islands, that propose not only the claening of the water but also the creation of a second nature. The mussel islands attach together to form large ecologies, protecting the existing marshes from surge and storms and create new social programs for the bay.

The bay is the most nitrogen-polluted body of water in the world. Nitrogen is nontoxic but causes harmful algae blooms that render waters inhospitable to marine life, affecting not only finand shellfish populations but the local and migratory birds that feed on them.

6

Incremental Reclamation

Nitrogen effects are the main responsible for the accelerating loss of the bay’s marshlands, which control shoreline erosion and provide temporary resting grounds for the thousands of weary birds that pass through every year on the Atlantic Flyway.

Prada Aoyama Joshua Uhl - Digital Craft Computing in architecture has changed methods of representation, retooled construction techniques, and made communication of complex information instantaneous. In this state of ubiquitous computing, the architect is asked to not only grasp these new technologies but to shape them into the built environment. As the edge between the virtual and real become increasingly thin, the architect must not only be proficient in this interactivity, but tool it toward new ideas and potentials that are rife within this expanding territory. Digital Craft investigates the concepts, techniques, and working methods of computer aided ‘drawing’ in architecture.

Memory Box Kunio Kudo - Design Studio The Memory box is a process exercise for the Oshima Wellness Center project located in the Oshima Island of kesennuma, Sendai. The box is the direct representation of a Controlled Complexity, based on the personal experience of the sudden realization of death as a real factor in life. The Acrylic box is perforated on four sides, allowing the single string to interweave on the interior of the box, while creating the sense of a never ending complexity. The string represents life and its complexity, while the Acrylic box controls it by the unchangeable reality of death.

Oshima Wellness Center Kunio Kudo - Design Studio A 9.0 magnitude undersea earthquake off the coast of northern Japan, followed by a 40-meter-high Tsunami, resulted in the malfunction of the Fukushima Daiichi seaside nuclear power plants. As the cooling ceased in the reactors, radioactive materials contaminated the surrounding land, air and water. Initial reports listed 30,000 human casualties, disproportionately weighted towards children and elderly. 100,000 structures were subsequently destroyed, affecting 8 million families and forcing 400,000 people to evacuate the vicinity. The enormous loss continued as hundreds of square miles of land disappeared under ocean water. Fields were salted and entire cities ravaged. Haunting memories of silent bodies, disrupted communities, and shattered homes remain. We will examine these memories, as they exist in the places, debris and fragments that were left behind, and design a repository for these memories and artifacts on a site now sacred to a small community. Memory, Memorial and Memorialization will be re-imagined by questioning a basic, fundamental motivation of architecture - to accommodate the ephemeral, eternal and spiritual. This studio will ask you to respond. The Oshima Wellness Center deals with the long lasting problem of suicide rates in Japan, immensely worsened by the triple disaster. The project houses recovering suicidal patients, with an architecture that emphasizes social integration while breaking with the patients daily routine.

Shelter Christopher Hoxie - Techniques of the Ultrareal The architectural rendering—be it photo-realistic, analytic, or abstract—captures the energy of an idea about space and the forces that act within it. The challenge of this course is to convey that dynamism—whether it is the movement of a set of bodies, a change in lighting and material qualities, or any other dynamic quality of architecture—with a set of static images. The intention of my project and images was to portray the idea of an abandoned shelter being taken by the water, erasing the limits between land and water.

Projecting Juan Herreros - Architecture Practice as Project The architectural office is one of the cores of the architect’s activity. It is his/her/their “first project”, the engine of creativity, an important part of the design and business material. However, it is rare to see a solid relationship between design concepts and their business implications. This course connects the pillars of business activity with architectural design. We want to explore the importance of design protocols and their application at all moments of the architectural process: the attainment of commissions; development of projects and their construction; communication and public exploitation of the work. The intention is to break the limits between “design tasks” and “service tasks” where architect’s work usually sways. If we make creativity the cornerstone of competitiveness, all levels are implicated according to the three premises: different design – different processes – different approach. Taking into consideration the current social and field isolation, Projecting will expose architecture to the public, will benefit from different fields and, as a result, will innovate the daily work strategy. The structure is generated from the event of projecting the daily work in the office, between workers but also to the public in the facade. Cidade do Samba Juan Herreros - Design studio Fatcomplexhybrid Of High Programmatic Density Is An Investigation Project That Pretends To Research The Techniques – Models And Methods– Of How We Think And Develop Large Urban Projects That Aim To Re-Locate The Gravity Centers Of Our Cities. In This Sense The Intention Is To Offer A Program That Seeks To Assume That Spare Time Activities Can Be More Participatory Rather Than Solely Of Passive Consumption: Producing Instead Of Watching Movies, Making Music Instead Of Watching Concerts, Buy Cheap, Acquire Expertise, Possess Informative Resources, Meeting Similar And Different... We Imagine A Certain Size Of Infrastructures For Neighbourhoods Of Between 100,000 To 250,000 Inhabitants With A Sphere Of Influence Of 150,000 Up To 500,000 Inhabitants. These Buildings Will Absorb All Necessary Features From The Big Containers Of Commerce And Leisure To Be Inserted In The Urban Culture As Warranties Of Success; From The Cultural And Architectural Models Already Explored The Clues To Finally Supply Them With A Mix Of Innovation And Sufficient Experience. It Is Understood That They Will Be Completed With A Big Portion Of Public Space Inscribed Of Unique Character And Equipped With Program. The Choice Of Their Placement Is Part Of The Exercise. In The 70’S In Europe And Latin America, A Generation Of Public Service Centers Emerged Which Tried To Provide Access To Culture, Sport, Leisure Time, The Encounter Between Children, Young And Old, Etc., Covered By The Model Of The “Welfare Society”. Initially These Centers Were Conceived As Ingredients In The Political Agenda And They Soon Became Important Architectural Objects. However, The Programs Became Obsolete At A Rate Inversely Proportional To The Produced Changes. The Cultural Centers, Congress Centers, Libraries, Sports Centers, Senior Facilities, Etc. Respond To Needs That Are As Basic As Defined That Consequently Leave Large Parts Of The Daily Activity Without Attention.

42

Cidade So Samba

Let’s Say They Are “Familiar” Places For Conventional Activities From A Specific And Well-Defined Sector Of The Society. Besides Their Success And Trivialization, They Impose A Revision In The Light Of Recent Changes Rooted In Cultural, Social,Technological And Economic Context Of Our Cities. We Intend To Work With The “Fuzzy” Sectors Of The Evident Programs. Those In Which You Can Discover A Fusion That No Longer Permits A Clear Separation: Culture Versus Commerce, Leisure And Sport Versus A New Health And Body Culture, Learning And New Technologies Versus Spectacle And Information, Are Not Easy To Separate. What Is The Difference Between A Black Box Theater And A Nightclub? And Between A Lending Library And Amazon? Why Are The Old People Separated From The Children? What Really Does A Cultural Centre Offer To Young People? Why Are Informal Labs And Workshops So Successful? Each City Fights For Its Markets, Transportation Hubs, Its Fairground, Its Congress Center, Its Clean Industries Park, Its Research Centers...Could We Mix Them With Communal Services And At The Time Stimulate A Renovation Of The Urban Environments Which Disorganized And Uncontrolled Growth Have Produced. Some Premises Can Be Set Right From The Start: Enrich The Monothematic Programs With Other Complementary Uses Until The Limits Of Capacity Of The Enclave And Its Context; Development With True Environmental Requirements And Goals; Intensify With The Presence Of Nature Beyond The Obvious; Work On The Hybridization Of Public And Private Programs, Exploring New Forms Of Work, Leisure And Socialization; Fight For A Critical Elimination Of Clichés Of Sociological Stereotypes... Etc. The Way In Which We Can Achieve An Effort As Proposed Here, Imposes To Rethink Some Of The Parameters That Most Strongly Contributed To The Construction Of The City We Know: Program, Organization, Economy, Obsolescence, Flexibility, Production, Consumption...

Cidade Do Samba presently works as a mono-programatic, enclosed “walled City”, confronting the immense potential and richness that surround its 75,000 m2 site. The Port City is composed by a wild energy that includes the Port and its insudtry, the Oldest favela in Rio de Janiero, the Old Downtown, and Rio’s unique street Culture. While the Samba Fabrication holds an important Role in the City’s culture, its current layout and it’s mono-thematic programs require an urgent change to a site that is center to the entire Port City and its new development. 44

Cidade So Samba

Instead of moving such an iconic Industry outside the city, the project looks to Enrich The Mono-thematic Programs With complementary uses that look into Rio’s unique Public space. A space that is best described in Favelas, where the line that divides interior (private) and exterior (public) gets blurred. The new Central Industrial District raises both physically and ideologically the Samba Fabrication, while envisioning a new tower typology for the Samba and the Port Industry, while making the ground floor completely permeable to the Street Culture of the City
