Why study this course?

Industrial Technology Skills focuses on the practices and processes required to manufacture products in a variety of industries.

Students understand industry practices; interpret specifications, including technical information and drawings; demonstrate and apply safe, practical production processes with hand/power tools and machinery; communicate using oral, written and graphical modes; organise, calculate and plan production processes; and evaluate the products they create using pre-defined specifications.

Students develop transferable skills by engaging in manufacturing tasks that relate to business and industry, and that promote adaptable, competent, self-motivated and safe individuals who can work with colleagues to solve problems and complete practical work.

What do students study?

The following are topics the students will be studying: • Welding and Fabrication • Furniture making • Sheet metal working • Engineering drafting • Fitting and machining

Unit 1 The furnishing and engineering industries – introduction and safety

Unit 2 Drawing interpretation and quality products

Unit 3 Working cooperatively in engineering workplaces

Unit 4 Simulated engineering workplace experience – marking out and drilling and tapping

Unit 5 Manufacturing enterprise – outdoor furniture

Unit 6 Simulated engineering workplace experience - basic lathe and milling operations

Uniform or Equipment Requirements

Students are working in an industrial environment whilst undertaking engineering projects. This dictates that industry standard safety equipment, includingsteelcapped bootsandclothing, needstobe worn to fully simulate workplace expectations. IPC has available for purchase branded work shirt and long pants which students are required to wear to class and during industry placement.

Post Secondary Pathways

A course of study in Industrial Technology Skills can establish a basis for further education and employment in manufacturing industries. Employment opportunities may be found in the industry areas of aeroskills, automotive, building and construction, engineering, furnishing, industrial graphics and plastics.
