A trip to death by Chocolate The drought, which was being spoken about by every single soul and every newspaper and news channel, was one which caused the death of many inhabitants living in the Doochy region of west Sharkland. The clouds refused to travel across the skies over the region leading to cracked earth and emaciated cattle. Vegetation seemed to be drying up with no sign of water at all. The apocalypse seemed to have dawned at this place. On learning about the prevailing drought, I was overtaken by a spirit of adventure and curiosity after which I decided to take a short trip to the dehydrated land which was some 1000 miles away from my habitat. The thought of the long and tiring odyssey was rather thrilling as I could picture the bumpy drive through the rough and worn out roads leading to Doochy, the once green land flourishing with vegetation and society, now a barren and desolate land. I started early on Friday. The road drive was more than what I had anticipated. The roads seemed all the more worse especially after the landslide. The deep gorges on my left unnerved me while the unstable and shaky steep hill on my right petrified me. The uneven and coarse road took a toll on my back, but that did not stop me. I reached Moochy in the late hours of Sunday and took sanctuary in the cheapest lodge there. Exhausted as I was, I decided to begin my expedition for Doochy the next morning. Having equipped myself properly with adequate quantity of water, food, and other amenities, I started off to explore the dead land. It was sheer inquisitiveness and adventure that had influenced this unexpected and sudden voyage of mine. Maybe it was Providence that caused me to take up this adventure into this horrendous location. Doochy, which was few kilometers away from Moochy, was no welcoming sight. The land was dry and morose with no sign of life. Few creatures like the camel and the cattle were braving these uninhabitable conditions and struggling to survive. Scarcity was evident in every corner of the area. Walking through the dusty streets, the silent and violent wind sprayed dust into my eyes, blinding me. Treading ahead for another hour, I reached a place where I could faintly see some thatched roofs of some dilapidated huts. I sprinted immediately towards the habitation only to meet the few people who were starving and were almost on the verge of dying. “Be so kind Sir to feed the hungry and the dying”, said one of them. Starved of food and water that they were, I gave them all that I had and asked them to come with me. They were not ready to leave the place as it was their homeland and wanted to exhaust their last breaths in the same place where they breathed their first. Persuasion worked against me as they wouldn’t change their minds. Therefore, I decided to help them out in another way. On speaking to the survivors I learnt what a rich and fertile land Doochy used to be. Certainly then it must have some hidden treasures or reserves underneath. Histori-

cally, Doochy used to be a land that was known for its cocoa trees and chocolate production houses. However industrialization caused the up growth of many industries, thereby leading the small scale chocolate industries to diminish and eventually terminate. Listening to this, I was suddenly struck with a bright idea. With the help of the rescue team from Moochy and the tools the villagers had, we began the great task of digging the land next to the dried out pool. We worked all night and took rest in the morning as toiling in the scorching heat seemed next to impossible. One week of persistent hard work and digging seemed futile for some time until the 9th day when somebody shouted, “Lo! What on earth is this?” We had found a small reserve of chocolate in that spot. This caused us to dig the entire area and in few days a whole big reserve was discovered in that quarter. “Rejoice to the name of the Almighty! Our prayers have been answered”, exulted one among us. It was more like a silver lining; a ray of hope in downright darkness. It was a moment of utmost contentment and gladness. It was time for festivity. The Gods finally turned more favourable towards the land. Clouds rolled in, lightning crackled and showers of water pored over. The rescue team called for more aid. In a span of few months the whole look of Doochy changed. Small scale chocolate producing industries were set up which produced and exported high grade chocolate to the other countries. In a matter of few more months, more reserves were found. Many people immigrated to the area thereby increasing its population. The chocolate from Doochy became the world’s best quality chocolate. From white chocolate to dark chocolate Doochy produced them all. People from around the world visited solely to enjoy these divine chocolates. “Death by chocolate”, as Doochy soon came to be known as after this occurrence produced chocolates worth dying for. Since then Doochy has been prospering largely and it still remains one of the most distinguished and legendary places in the hearts and minds of chocolate lovers.

The Perfect Story The threads have been severed. He had reached a point in her life where there was no coming back. As their souls embraced each other, the fire burnt brighter and brighter. They would often look at each other, and say nothing. I was jealous, almost heartbroken to look into their eyes. The pain, the anguish, the passion- it was all there. What was missing? I wondered, deeper and deeper, much more than they did. They had given up. There was no way that things could be alright again. There was no happy ending. Last night, while making love, she realized what he meant to her. A place that only her father had been the sole contender for. He was right there. She was surprised at how soon he had managed to reach on top, something that even an etch on her skin couldn’t. But where were they heading? I decided to sit back and look on. ‘Till death do us apart’ has never been an option. It is ridiculous. Grow old together, now that made sense. They were tangible assets for each other, supporting, scorning, criticizing, loving----loving deeply. They unfolded each chapter together. She was still naïve, full of ideas and excitement. She loved dancing and drinking. He was always behaving in the sensible way that you would expect an adult to behave. ‘The dark horse’- was what she used to think of him. The charm, the eyes, the wit. Would sweep her off her feet every single time. And she would remain shell- shocked at his ingenuity and creativity. He, on the other hand, would love her when she is silly, smart, grumpy and everything else. Poles apart, yet together. Differences brought them closer every single day. I looked on and wondered, deeper and deeper. That night, he knew, that he had to let go. Bound by priorities that ranked above everything else. Everybody else. He wanted to dive deep; she was content at the shore. He wanted to touch the stars, she was content naming them. He wanted to scale the highest mountain; she was content travelling the road. Accomplishments were subjective, and they were a prey to it. A name in the advertising world and a house overlooking the sea was her sense of accomplishment. He wanted to open a coffee shop in the hills. Glamour and solitude can never coincide. They wrapped themselves around each other for the last time. Bidding good-bye was never a favorite part. I couldn’t wonder anymore. They had stopped too.

Years ago, joining college was a new elation, craze and excitement in our eyes we had! Frightful of the people we will meet, refreshing smiles we carried on our cheeks! Ecstatic about the casuals we will wear, paranoid about the peer’s intentions, we still cheer! Slowly and steadily we befriended those acquaintances, from being humble and polite to fights, revenges and confrontations. Secrets we will take to the grave, memories that will never fade! That ‘Intro’ session at the canteen, seniors applauding your writing passion (RIP), To reciting your rhymes and galvanising the crowd. Chasing guys and those ‘CS’ class debates, favourite things amongst those boring lectures that we hate! Racing around the campus, food fights in the canteen, organising events at the fests to bunking the lectures Those long chats till 4 we had and group studies on the last day that we did! ‘This college “sucks” ’, used to be our watchword though; but amidst all this we made such amazing friends. Now is the time we have to part away, “Catch you tomorrow!!” to “When will we see each other next?”, is how it all changed! From petty pocket money to huge salary is how we are expecting it to turn out to be! Some friends gone, some will go,different cities, different continents New friends we will make, but an impression in the heart will always stay! Today, while writing the last exam of my college life, all those memories running down my sight! In the blink of an eye 6 years have fled, The sweet ‘n sour memories, those ‘hilarious’ lectures, the classroom fun, those gossips and trips we will all miss! Let’s start by getting to know you. Tell us a little about yourself. Hi! I’m Milad Hameed, I am an amateur photographer based in Singapore. I’m a self-taught photographer in the sense that I’ve never taken any photography class. I have learned a lot from online resources and from many photographer friends. At this moment photography is a hobby for me, so I am working full time as an IT professional, which pays the bills and funds my hobby I found the eye of the camera allowed me to view my surroundings in greater depth. The artistic side of my brain sees things the technical side has not caught up to yet

and I know I still have much to learn and that’s okay because in the meantime I am enjoying the journey! What got you started on the photography bit? I have been interested in photography since I can remember. I will admit that until more recently I didn’t really take the time to work on improving my creative and technical skills. Like many, I would take snapshots while on vacation, at family gatherings, and etc. But, I always felt that I could do better. I got my first DSLR 3 years ago, and I immediately fell in love with it. Photography has cer-

tainly changed my life in that it’s opened my eyes and made me really see what is around me. Through it, I have found my vision has become more fine-tuned and I now look at my surroundings completely differently. Who or what inspires you? Just about anything that looks interesting. Photography forces me to look at the world much harder than normal. It makes me find intriguing, unusual, and stunning beauty in unexpected places, and forces me into new spaces looking for more. Personally I love to shoot candid shots, Social realities, cultures, cities, things are happening… Also I love to shoot candid portrait, especially faces with those natural expressions. What kind of camera do you shoot with? Endau national park in Malaysia was a memorable experience. It was my firs photography trip, and many photos turned out to be great clicks. The first photographer who comes to your mind and why? Bryan Peterson, He is a fantastic photographer and a great teacher of photography. I have read some of his books. And have learned a lot from his video tutorials online. You get the cloak of invisibility for a day. What would you do? I have come across so many beautiful locations where photography is restricted, I will be going there and capturing those beautiful locations If not behind the camera, where would you be instead? If not behind the camera I will in front of my computer . Are you working on anything currently? I am working on some personal projects currently. I am also working on getting my website ready. Hopefully I will be able to get my website up and running by November 2014 One social evil in the world that bothers you the most? What do you think we

should do about it?. Drug abuse is a very major problem in our society that not only affects many of the people addicted to it but also their near and dear ones. The numbers of drug addicts are increasing at an alarming rate. Effective Social awareness programs and strict laws controlling selling / usage of such drugs needs to be in place to control it. Three things about you that people don't know: - Music is my life - Apart from photography I love painting. - I am addicted to sweets :P Something that you want to achieve as a photographer in the coming years: Solo Exhibition in India, still working towards it. Try to travel to many parts of the world and understand what a diverse world we live in. Go on a road trip across India shoot people / cultures. And the list goes on….

Any advice for the up and comers: Never think photography is easy. It not just pressing the shutter button, It’s like poetry in that it’s easy enough to make a few rhymes, but that’s not a good poem. Learn the craft (which is not very hard). Carefully study past works of other photographers Always shoot to practice what you’ve learned. This will hone your skills and get out there in the world and interact. Be open to criticism, it can be really helpful.
