Ignition profiles and celebrates creative excellence across the Faculty’s many disciplines. Ignition is about you, so use it to get the edge; to carve your way.
If it’s from Creative Industries, it’s part of Ignition. Launched in conjunction with the Christchurch Arts Festival 2009, CPIT’s Creative Industries Faculty is home to more than 1,000 students across four Schools - Art & Design, Architectural Studies, Broadcasting, and Performing Arts. Ignition is the public face of Creative Industries – a year-long events programme showcasing the talents and achievements of students and staff. Ignition provides experiences and opportunities to build an audience, a community and a following. It’s your chance to shine in front of potential patrons, employers and sponsors - to forge meaningful, real world relationships through your creative endeavours . Ignition coordinates the performances, exhibitions, seminars – whatever it takes to help you showcase your work. Collaborate with students in your own field or across disciplines to create new, dynamic bodies of work. Use Ignition to work your talent and ideas, and to demonstrate your initiative. With Ignition, your learning and progress isn’t confined to course work. Network, collaborate, and dream big. It’s all part of showing employers, sponsors, buyers, why they should back you. The challenge is for you to make the most of your opportunities with the Creative Industries Faculty, to forge relationships that will give your career that boost. Ignition is where it all starts.

Ignition informs and connects. Find out what’s happening where and when, and link with other students in the Faculty. You’ll be amazed how much is going on.
The Ignition edge comes from the real world multidisciplinary opportunities and experiences open to you through this programme. In a study environment your association with any project ends typically with the assessment or hand-in date. In the working world the assessment represents no more than the initial draft stage of a project. While you’re studying you invariably miss out on the all the learning that comes with bringing a project to life: the posters on the walls and fences, the pages on business websites, the magazines in the stores and cafes around town, and the music that accompanies the ads on TV.
everything from tee shirts to posters, programmes and magazines. The opportunities are huge. If you’re studying design and keen to get involved, talk to your tutor, Graeme Kyle, or Martin Trusttum to find out more.
Through Ignition, real clients commission real projects with real objectives and measures. Most requests require creative collaboration. You’ll be working as part of a team to meet the brief on time and on budget. You’ll need to follow through and follow up with people outside your team to make it happen. You’ll learn to talk with people from other disciplines. You don’t need to learn their skills but you need to understand how they work so that you can project manage or link your element of the project to the next stage.
We’ve also set up a Moodle forum so you can share ideas. Any contributions you make here are broadcast to all registered members. Staff will also see these messages and can note any issues you raise.
These projects range from work channelled to you from diverse industry sources through Ignition or projects designed to build and improve the Ignition tools themselves. For a full list see pages 9-11.
Getting credit Your tutors will support your involvement in the development of Ignition projects whenever possible. In many cases they will give you credit for the work that can go towards an assessment or project. If the work is comprehensive, it could be a project in itself.
Getting involved Check out our website. There is lots of information and useful links to get you started. www.ignition.ac.nz
www.ignition.ac.nz/moodle Talk to past and present students: check out the Ignition Facebook fan page to see who’s doing what. Ask your tutors, or contact Martin Trusttum, Ignition Director.
Keeping up to date Your class representatives will attend regular Ignition meetings to talk about the stuff coming up, stuff that needs improving, and any new ideas etc. Check with them – they are your eyes and ears in the Faculty. Meetings will be held from 12.15 to 12:50pm fortnightly, on Mondays from the 22nd March, in room C232. Something tasty will be provided. Check the website, join the Ignition Facebook fan page, or subscribe to Ignition tweets.
For example, most of our events are promoted using publicity material designed by students -

Ignition is here for you, so get involved and get ahead. Use the tools, join the groups, commit to projects - make it an integral part of your study with us.
We have tools in place to help build the Ignition programme and extend its reach across media. These are yours to use and improve. THE WEBSITE www.ignition.ac.nz The main tool we have developed is the Ignition website. The website includes the broadest single repository of information about our Faculty and, eventually, the fullest picture of our capability. The site includes info on all the events the Faculty is presenting in the coming year as well as an archive of past exhibitions and performances grouped by School. The site includes lots of tools to help you promote yourself and your work, get a job, ask for help etc. You will see them listed on the following page. The website needs the most on-going work. Apart from the addition of content, which will be done by key staff, we are looking for people with the web skills to take our initial design and turn it into a truly knockout multi-media showcase. If that person is you, please contact Martin Trusttum or John Maillard.
THE MAGAZINE The Ignition Magazine is produced twice a year. The magazine gives a snapshot of the capability and strength of our Faculty. It is aimed at the high school audience, their parents, past and present students, and the wider design community. Most of the stories focus on graduate success because those stories, more than anything else, tease out the pathways people can and have followed as they make their way in their career. They give a good idea of what is possible. We are always on the lookout for strong interesting stories for the two issues we print each year. If you know of a friend who is studying or has studied at CPIT and who has done something pretty flash that you feel warrants a mention, then please get in touch with Martin Trusttum.

exhibitions and performances Exhibitions and performances are the acid test for everything you do. The challenges are intense, the learning opportunities are huge, and the rewards even greater. Now you’re doing it.
Ignition puts you and your work in the public eye. Exhibitions and performances reflect and extend your talent, your learning and development, and your commitment. Most exhibitions and performances are the culmination of learning outcomes and assessments, but not all presentations are assessed. Your School’s presentation will be coordinated by one of your technicians and/or tutors. They will also help you prepare the work itself.
What promotion does your event receive? As a rule, promotion for your event will include: • posters • flyers • an event listing in the Ignition email newsletter • an event listing on the Ignition facebook fanpage • opening night invitations to your school mailing list • print advertisements (depending on the cost and profile of the production - the larger it is the more likely it is). NOTE: In some cases the pasting of posters will be done by Phantom Bill Stickers. This will apply to larger or higher profiled events because the cost is extremely high. For smaller shows there is an expectation that members of your class or school will distribute the posters around town.
Is there catering? On some occasions your event may be catered. However, this will depend on the venue where the event is held, the budget available, the number of people, and the type of audience expected to attend. It is safer to assume that there will be no budget for this. But if you strongly believe your event should be catered, then please raise this as early as possible in the planning stages.
Who gets invited? Your School will invite guests to your event on your behalf. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, we want to widen our network and secondly, we want to centralise our contact process to ensure CPIT doesn’t deluge anyone with bulk mail. Mailouts that include an RSVP component are made 4 weeks before the event. Standard invitations are made 2 weeks before. This means all addresses to be
ignition | 13
ignition included in that mailout will need to be gathered and verified 3 weeks prior to that. RSVP invitations are delivered by both snail mail and email. Standard invitations are sent by email only.
How do I add people to the mailing list? To make sure we have the contact details of those people you would like see at your event, please add their full names and details, on the page ignition.ac.nz/register This is something your tutors should encourage you to do early in the year. Design: Sam Reed RIPE 2008
On the registration page you will find a number of fields to fill in. All of these must be completed. These include: First Name Last Name Primary Address Suburb City Postcode Email Mobile phone Organisation (if applicable) A primary address is either a street address or a PO Box number, whichever is the most relevant. The Organisation field is optional. You would only include this if the person you wanted to invite was a professional acquaintance. It is assumed that if you completed this field you would also be adding the work address information in the other fields.

the creative festival The Festival is a celebration of your achievements and of the value and strength of CPIT as a whole. It is the stage with the highest production values we can muster. We want you to shine.
The CPIT Creative Festival is the final event on the Ignition calendar. It is the ultimate showcase of the results of your work (and by extension the outcomes of the Creative Industries Faculty), and acts as a flagbearer for CPIT itself. It is the largest publicly branded CPIT event of the year. It’s meant to be something special for your families and friends to celebrate. It is also meant to be an occasion that CPIT and the Creative Industries Faculty in particular can crow about. We believe our Faculty has one of the most dynamic and exciting programmes in the country, and we believe that with vision and
perseverance, we can make an education with us one of the most relevant and productive you could hope to get. The Festival includes a number of School exhibitions and performances including:
Circus Under the Stars (CircoArts) PITCH (Fashion) RIPE (Art & Design) EXIT (Architecture) BEAT (MusicArts) FLICK (Broadcasting) OUTRO (NASDA) FINALE with support from all the performing art schools and Te Puna Wanaka.

ignition art & design + architecture RIPE & EXIT RIPE and EXIT are showcases of the work by final year students studying the Bachelor in Design (BDes ) and the Bach elor in Architectural Studies (BAS).
Expectations All students in the BDes and BAS programmes are expected to play a part in these events. The showcase is a major feat that requires focussed but concerted staff and student effort. Some of you will be expected to assist with the installation and pack-down of the display panels while others will be required to install and present your own work.
Displaying your work
Preparation
As a year 3 student in the BDes and BAS programmes you will each have 2 panels (2200h x 1200w) on which to display your work. You can also include plinths and shelves. The number and size of these items must be decided in discussion with your tutors and school technicians.
All exhibitors in EXIT and RIPE will need to attend an initial meeting organised by your senior tutor in September to discuss the preparation and presentation plan for your school. If you are showing then you will need to submit an initial proposal later that month. In that initial draft you will need to indicate all the elements you wish to include. This will include shelving and plinths, computers or display screens, and any additional components that need to be made or bought.
Responsibilities Second Year students are encouraged to help with the setup and are expected to attend the exhibitions. If you’re in Year 3 you are expected to present a selection of your own work. Please note that this work must be previewed by one of your tutors before it can be installed.
Students will be given an A5 page in the programme that accompanies the show. Students must supply the blurb of no more than 150 words, using a template that will be provided. Photographs will be arranged by the Faculty.
Points of note The two shows, EXIT and RIPE will be managed and coordinated by the Festival Gallery Manager, Tim Brown, Senior Technician with the Faculty. Simon Robinson will manage the Architecture Schools technical needs directly. Chris van Empel will be the tutorial liaison with BAS students, Graeme Kyle and Rob Lovelock will liaise with VisComm, Bing Dawe with VisArts, John Maillard with Photography and Christian Carruthers with Animation. Plaques with your name, course title and photo will be printed and displayed on the panels next to your work. All students should complete the online registration for people they would like to invite to RIPE and EXIT. (See page 14 for details). Design: Catherine Mellish EXIT 2009

PITCH
BEAT
PITCH shows off the superb work by all the students from the Fashion School, including the second collections by Year Three students.
Expectations All fashion students are expected to contribute to the production of PITCH.
Displaying your work All students can show their work at PITCH so long as it has received a passing grade.
to select a track to accompany their presentation. This must be submitted in CD or wav. format (not mp3). Year Three students are expected to develop and direct all components of the presentation of their 2nd collection.
Points of note All garments made by Year One and Two students are kept on site by the Fashion School once marked, until after the show.
All students are expected to tag their own garments, and write a description of them for the show programme.
The programme for PITCH is coordinated by Nathan Ingram. Students are expected to provide the material he requests to complete it.
Year One and Two students are able to style their garments, which means the option of providing shoes and accessories.
All students should complete the online registration for people they would like to invite to PITCH. (See page 14 for details).
Year Three students are expected to arrange their own models, hair, makeup, and accessories. They are expected to develop a brief for their lighting, accomanying video, and choreography. They must also select the music track to accompany the video that the students from the DVPP programme make to support their collection. The track must be selected before the students meet. The video should be no more that 3mins long.
Responsibilities All students are expected to assist with distribution of posters and flyers around town in the lead up to the show. Year One students are responsible for helping with preparation for the show. They will also work as dressers at all rehearsals and the show itself. Year Two students are responsible for assisting with model fittings and are expected to liaise with the choreographer
FLICK FLICK presents short film and television productions by students from the New Zealand Broadcasting School.
Expectations Because the presentation features student work from the previous year, students are expected to leave a high quality DVD or copy of their final year submission with Leigh Cookson or their tutor.
Displaying your work Student work is selected by tutorial staff and compiled by Masen Ma into the showreel screened at the exhibition.
BEAT is a celebration of staff and students from the Bachelor of Musical Arts at the Jazz School. The event will feature you in individual and group performances in a wide range of styles. You or your group may be invited to audition for a place in the show, or an elective group or regular ensemble you are part of may perform.
Expectations Students may be involved in BEAT: - as an individual performer - as part of a group - helping backstage or in production - as part of a final assessment
Preparation Students will be given an A5 page in the programme that accompanies the show. Students must supply the blurb of no more than 150 words, using a template that will be provided. Photographs will be arranged by the Faculty.
Points of note Students are expected to be available and contribute to BEAT as an integral part of their study. In order to maximise the success of all events in Ignition, full and free participation by students allows CPIT to realise the full potential of Ignition and produce a truly memorable experience for performers and audience alike. You will be made aware of the dates and your potential involvement in BEAT well in advance. Please make careful note of the dates, and keep them free. And invite your friends and family! (See page 14 for details).

ignition music + performance CUTS
Preparation
Circus under the Stars (CUTS) is held outside, over three nights, at the beginning of November. It gives CircoArts students the chance to display the skills they have developed over the year in a stunning outdoor setting with full stage, lighting, sound and audience seating. The show is aimed at a family audience.
Students participating in these events will be given an A5 page in the programme that accompanies the show. Students must supply the blurb of no more than 150 words, using a template that will be provided. Photographs will be arranged by the Faculty.
OUTRO OUTRO is a musical theatre show with the highest production values.
FINALE FINALE is a celebration of the Performing Arts at CPIT, with contributions from the School of Performing Arts - Music Arts, NASDA and CircoArts, along with students from Te Puna Wanaka. FINALE allows students and staff from these programmes to showcase their individual talents, and combine for a truly awesome celebration of the amazing performing arts at CPIT.
Expectations Students from all of the performing arts programmes may be involved in the events CUTS, OUTRO and FINALE: - as an individual performer - as part of a group - helping backstage or in production - as part of a final assessment.
Points of note Students are expected to be available and contribute to these events as an integral part of their study. In order to maximise the success of all events in Ignition, full and free
participation by students allows CPIT to realise the full potential of these shows and produce a truly memorable experience for performers and audience alike. You will be made aware or the dates and your potential involvement in CUTS, OUTRO, or FINALE well in advance. Please make careful note of the dates, and keep them free. And invite your friends and family! (See page 14 for details). The production values of FINALE and OUTRO especially are extremely high, and allow CPIT to display the talents of students and staff at the highest level. Ticket prices for the public reflect and attempt to recover some of the high costs associated with this level of production. While there will be many contractors contributing to this event on a professional basis, students are expected to be available and contribute to FINALE as an integral part of their study.

the goodies The Tee Shirt All students working on or presenting work at the Creative Festival in November will get a free Festival tee shirt: last year’s example is shown at right. The 2010 version will be available to view from August on ignition.ac.nz.
The DVD Students can buy a DVD of PITCH or FINALE by registering their order at www.ignition.ac.nz/dvdorder (cost $20). Once payment has been received we will mail the DVD out to you. The DVD will be available from mid-December.
Course Credits One of the biggest plusses of getting involved in the development of Ignition material and/or Ignition tools is the potential to use that work as part of an assessed project or as a project in itself if the work is substantial enough. Provided you have negotiated it with your tutor first, you can gain credits which will count towards your course grade.
Awards and Prizes There are a number of prizes and awards available to students within each school. Some are for materials and products associated with your course while others are quite signiificant and can include cash and scholarships. See the section describing your school events for this year later in this handbook to see more details

• Pass It On (May 15-20) Jeannie and Cliff, the two adolescents who joined the hunger march in ‘Wednesday to Come’, have grown up and married. Celebrating the role of working class women in the 1951 Waterfront Lockout, this play traces the relationship of Jeannie and Cliff’s wife Nell from initial distrust to a firm alliance against the political and economic forces.
• 42nd Street (June 19-24) ‘42nd Street’ is a high-powered, tap-dancing celebration of Broadway and the people involved in shows. It focuses on aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer, and takes us along her journey. Every audience enjoys watching the underdog succeed!

• Curtains (September 11-18) The recent Broadway musical ‘Curtains’ unfolds backstage at Boston’s Colonial Theatre in 1959, where a new show could be a Broadway smash, were it not for the presence of its talentfree leading lady. When the hapless star dies on opening night during her curtain call, Lieutenant Frank Cioffi arrives on the scene to conduct an investigation. But the lure of the theatre proves irresistible and after an unexpected romance blooms for the stage-struck detective, he finds himself just as drawn toward making the show a hit, as he is in solving the murder.
