South west in bloom! This year, Bath and North East Somerset Council will be hosting the Royal Horticultural Society’s South West In Bloom Awards at Bath’s Assembly Rooms on 16th September. To mark this occasion, the whole of Bath and North East Somerset will have the same floral scheme for 2010, which is ‘fire’ colours of reds, oranges, yellows and purples. This area does fantastically well in the competition. In 2009, Radstock won a Gold, Midsomer Norton a Silver Gilt and Bath a Silver in their categories. If you are involved in any kind of gardening, do think about using this year’s colour scheme and let your local In Bloom Committee know of your activities in case you can be included in the entries! Contact Nicola Ware on 07974213605.

‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ and RHS campaign for school gardening A huge part of the RHS’ ‘In Bloom’ competition is to demonstrate that as many members of the community as possible are involved with brightening up their neighbourhoods. The ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards enable groups of interested people to get support and advice on projects that improve their local environment. They are non competitive and a great way of getting expert help as well as recognition for your work. Their Campaign for School Gardening teaches children about growing plants and food, healthy eating and how to care for the environment. Over 10,000 schools have now registered so make sure yours does too! Further information on both schemes is available on their website:www.rhs.org.uk/Gardening/Communitygardening

Bath in bloom Don’t forget our local competition as well! This is open to all residents, businesses, schools, institutions or community groups within the boundary of Bath & North East Somerset. There is a huge range of categories to choose from including one for schools and best horticultural achievement by a school pupil. There is even one for best hanging basket and another for tallest sunflower! For further information on this, or any of the above, contact Nicola Ware on 07974213605.

News & Reviews Parallelephants

Monty and Imperial come to Trinity The children at Trinity C of E Primary school were treated to a special visit from police horses Monty and Imperial in March. The children were able to stroke them and watch them demonstrate their skills too. All of the children loved learning about the horses and how the mounted police help in numerous situations.

This wonderful elephant is 1 of 12, which together make up the parallelephants, a project set up by The Paragon School in Bath to raise money for Banunule School in Uganda. Peasedown St John Primary School were given the opportunity of working with The Paragon School to decorate their elephant and name her too. Tessellaphant is the name they gave her and they decorated her using a tessellating design which is a series of elephant shapes that fit together to cover her body. Each class then had a chance of colouring their designs and she will now be auctioned to raise money for Banunule school. The pupils and teachers of Peasedown School would very much like Tessellaphant to remain in the village and would ask any local businesses to attend the auction on 22nd May at The Paragon School to bid for this wonderful elephant

It’s a Play Pod! Peasedown St John School now are the proud owners of their very own Play Pod. The pod is regularly stocked with ‘junk’ for the children to play with around the school grounds. They can make obstacle courses, build dens from old tyres, tubing, pipes, boxes and much, much more. The children said ‘it’s amazing’, ‘We love it’!

Farrington Helps Haiti Farrington Gurney Primary School’s Haiti Earthquake Appeal on Monday 18th January raised £400! This has been sent to Chelwood Rotary Club who is making basic water kits, so our contribution should help families have clean water now and in the future. The pupils ran a cake stall and held a mufti day and donated some of their pocket money to help those caught up in the disaster. On Saturday 6th February, St John’s church held a village coffee morning, craft fair, car wash & bring-and-buy sale in the Memorial Hall and raised a staggering £2124. It was wonderful to see so many people from the village joining in together to support the Haiti appeal.

World Book Day a huge success The children at Trinity Primary School made a huge effort with their special ‘book day’ hats. The 7 special hat winners were Abigail in year 6, Reuben in year 5, Thomas in year 3, Jordan in year 2, Cara in year 1 and Joe in reception each winner received a £5 book token to buy a special book for themselves. A special cake to mark the event was made by a parent and all the children had a piece to take home. A fabulous day was had by all!

All out for Haiti The Longvernal primary school Council all worked together when they heard about the disaster in Haiti. They arranged a mufti day for all children across the school and raised £64.44 for the appeal. Well done to you all and it is great to hear that you are thinking of others.

Official opening Welton Primary School have been working very hard on securing funds and arranging plans for their new build project for a few years and March saw the official opening of their fantastic new dining hall and after school club/ pre-school building. The very colourful new building was opened by Mrs Anne Mitchell, former head teacher of Welton School and a very large cake was served to all parents and children to celebrate the superb new facility. The building is also available to the local community and can be used for meetings, events and gatherings. Contact the school for more information.

Magic Book Week No less than 20 juniors took part in the Book Quiz and they certainly knew their stuff! Each team of two had to read a fiction and a non-fiction book and were quizzed to test their knowledge of these books. Quiz masters Headteacher Sue Jones and Year 5/6 teacher Sally Edgell also tested the pupils’ general literature knowledge. Well done to all and especially to Jessica Winfield & Alicia Brown (Year 4) whose knowledge of Hippos and Jacqueline Wilson’s “Sleepovers” was astounding! The winners and the 3 runner-up teams were allowed to chose a book from the Book Fair. The infants in the school held a Bedtime Stories evening, which offered an opportunity for parents and children to snuggle up in the classrooms in their pyjamas and share stories and a mug of hot chocolate! The whole school dressed up as magical characters to end Magic Book Week on Friday 29th January. There were wizards, witches and fairies galore! Mums, dads and grandparents joined the pupils for a Family Seal afternoon. Together, they made a Magic Cauldron, containing ingredients for a successful family.

World Book Day at Kilmerson school The children wore hats to represent their favourite book character. They came back to school at 6.00 pm for bedtime stories in their PJs and dressing gowns – and the PTA provided hot chocolate and cookies for everyone.

Where the Wild Things are…In Longvernal Library! Children at Longvernal primary School have been lucky enough to work with local artist Helen Hewitt on their fabulous new library in readiness for World Book Day. The ‘Where the wild things are’ cave will be used by all classes and will inspire imagination and creativity in the children’s story making and literacy. The project has been extremely successful in developing art making skills and providing a special space for story making too.

Pom pom chick keyring This pompom chick key-ring is a quick and easy Easter craft - fun to hang on a bag perhaps? Of course you don’t need the ribbon - just make a few of these and put out on display to be admired! You will need: A large yellow pompom Orange craft foam Yellow craft feathers Googly eyes Yellow ribbon Key-ring attachment Glue Instructions: Cut a small triangle from orange craft foam and attach, along with your googly eyes, to form the face.

Daffodil Badge

Use a dab of glue to attach a loop of ribbon to the back of the pompom, and then stick on a bundle of feathers for the tail over the top of it. If you place them carefully, two of them can protrude underneath the pompom for feet. Tie your key-ring attachment to the other end of the ribbon.

You will need: Egg box Orange paint Yellow card Glue Safety pin Sticky tape Instructions: Cut one of the egg compartments from the egg box and paint it orange. Leave to dry. Cut out a flower shape from yellow card. Glue the egg compartment to the centre as the trumpet. When the daffodil is completely dry, tape a safety pin to the back so that you can wear it.

Bunny Mask Use a paper plate and some craft cupboard bits and pieces to make a cute bunny mask - perfect for Easter! You will need: A paper plate Pink paint Pink card White pipe cleaner (chenille stem) Elastic thread Glue Black pen Instructions: Paint the back of the paper plate pink and leave to dry. Cut out two eye holes. Snip the pipe cleaner into 3 and twist together in the centre. Glue to the centre of the face. Cut out a nose from pink card and glue to the centre of the pipe cleaners.

Marbeled eggs

Daisy Picture

Fingerprint Sheep

Marbled Eggs are fun for kids to make - and pretty to display at Easter, too. You will need marbling inks, which are available in most craft stores. You will need: Marbling inks Plastic eggs Old large yogurt pot or small bucket Wooden skewers or pipe cleaners Instructions: Fill your bucket about 2/3 full of cold water. Drop a few drops of marbling ink into the water and stir with a skewer or pipe cleaner. Add more colors, stirring after each until you are happy. Use a wooden skewer or pipe cleaner to hold an egg (they usually have small holes in them) and dip the egg into the water, swishing it around to make sure the entire egg becomes covered in ink. Stand the skewer in a pot so the egg can dry.

Get the paints out and have a fun fingerprint painting session with your children. You will need: White paint Black paint Paper Instructions: Dip your fingers in the white paint and print lots of finger prints in an oval shape on the paper. Add a large thump print in black paint as the head and a small finger print as the ears. Four black finger prints make the legs.

Children can sew this pretty daisy picture to give as a gift (mount it and frame in a simple frame like ours) or use it on the front of a card for someone special, You will need: White and yellow embroidery thread or yarn Green card Needle with large eye (blunt for younger children) Instructions: Sketch out your design on the back of the card. Put the card on a folded newspaper, and, following the outline that you have drawn, punch holes with your needle. Try to space them evenly. Tape one end of the thread to the back of the card to secure, and sew your design in place. Either frame the picture for a special gift, or glue your daisy to the front of a card for a spring birthday or Teacher Appreciation card.

Handprint Chicks These little handprint chicks are fun to do and make a great Easter picture or card. They look great and they provide a cute memento too! You will need: Paper Yellow and orange paint Black pen Instructions: For each chick print a yellow handprint with fingers together. Add a fingerprint orange beak and leave to dry. With the black pen draw on the wings, eyes and feet.

It’s Never Too Late to Learn Going back to College after time out to have a child sounds quite a daunting prospect, but it’s a choice that many students at Norton Radstock College have made in order to develop their careers. ‘I chose to go back to College as a route into University’, said Vicky, Level 3 Access to HE in Health & Social Care. ‘I used to work in customer services and had time off to look after my three children. It’s a nice atmosphere, with some great people on the course.’ ‘I wanted to do something different’, said Lauren, Level 2 Floristry who started a course soon after having a child. It’s been really hands-on and has allowed me to keep my options open to either find work or carry on learning’. The College provides a wide range of vocational courses at all levels, from Level 1 through to Foundation Degree. There’s an on-site nursery, a free bus service from surrounding locations and ample free car parking. People sometimes say finance is an issue, but the College is able to advise students on this, which can be dependent on your current level of qualifications or any benefits claimed. Some students may also be eligible for an Adult Learners Grant (ALG). The on-site Student Support Services team can provide more information. The College also works closely with Nextstep, who can provide general guidance on training, jobsearch and CV writing. Norton Radstock College also has a range of courses that are free for people who are claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, including Sage Computerised Accounts, Introduction to Administration, Introduction to Care, Door Supervisor and a range of flexible IT courses. Funding is also available for some part-time courses through the Give Us a Break project, which enables carers in B&NES to try something new and get back into education. For more information or a course guide, call Norton Radstock College on 01761 433161 or visit www.nortcoll.ac.uk

There are a few things that some people dream about doing. For some they want to climb Mount Everest, some want to see the ancient pyramids, and some want to learn to ride a horse. If you or your children wish to learn to ride a horse I’ll give you just a couple of things that you should learn to do right at the start. One of the first things that you should do when you learn to ride a horse is to learn how to lead one. That’s probably not what you had in mind but still, it’s important. You shouldn’t be standing at the end of the lead rope trying to pull your horse along and you also shouldn’t be standing at their shoulder letting them lead you along. There’s no control in either of those methods. The best way to lead a horse is to stand with your shoulder pretty close to their throatlatch and about a foot over to the side of them. That way you have enough room between the two of you for comfort. With one hand right below the lead snap and the other holding the rest of the lead line, you will step forward with the horse hopefully following. If it doesn’t then you just simply push gently in the direction you want to go with the hand that has the snap. That will give you the most control over the horse.

Wellow Trekking Centre and Frank’s Farm We operate as a separate horse riding and trekking centre for adults and children of all ages, from beginners to experienced riders, with a large selection of rides deep into the heart of the countryside.

Now that you know how to lead a horse your horseback lessons will flow smoothly. When you learn to ride a horse you have to be in control and if you can lead one with control on the ground you have a better chance of being able to learn to ride a horse. Riding a horse works best when you know that you’re in control.

You can learn to ride a horse by taking lessons with a fully qualified trainer. If you learn to ride a horse, you are learning a skill that has been around for hundreds of years and some will learn to ride a horse for pleasure, relaxation, exercise or just time by themselves or with their family.

Secret 1 - Whatever you choose, savour it! Chew each bite at least 20 times before swallowing to bring a certain awareness to each mouthful of food. Appreciate the texture and the taste of each mouthful. The same if you enjoy a glass of wine - sip and savour AND drink a glass of water for every glass of wine you drink so you’re still smiling in the morning! It is said that your brain takes about 20 minutes to communicate to your stomach that it’s full so if you eat too quickly you’ll literally fill up before you know it! Secret 2 - Sharing is sociable Order several small different dishes and share them with your friends. Then take small helpings of each dish. You can always go back for more but it gives your brain and stomach a chance to communicate. Secret 3 - Season well Go for the lightest cooked option you can find on the menu - eg. soup, vegetable dishes, season it well with black pepper, and ask the waiter for lemon juice and some herbs.

Secret 4 - Starter over sweet Have a starter instead of a dessert. This might seem a hard one for most of us who have a sweet tooth but I’ve found that if you have a starter and a main course by the time it gets to the dessert it’ll really only be your mind that wants the dessert. If you truly cannot resist, then it should be enough to just order one to share with your friends. Secret 5 - To drink or not to drink Ideally you would have drunk enough water before eating so you won’t feel thirsty. If you’re still thirsty, ask for a herbal tea or a glass of hot water (with a dash of fresh lemon juice) to sip with meal rather than a glass of cold water. It is better to drink water that is warm or roomtemperature so that the body does not have to use as much energy to bring it up to body temperature. If you do drink cold water (no ice please!) remember that is still better than sparkling. However, recognise that drinking an excessive amount with your meal actually encourages you to eat more because you will be reducing your digestive capacity.

The Tooth Fairy Derek Thompson is a hard-charging hockey player whose nickname comes from his habit of separating opposing players from their bicuspids. When Derek discourages a youngster’s dreams, he’s sentenced to one week’s hard labor as a real tooth fairy, complete with the requisite wings and magic wand. At first, Derek “can’t handle the tooth” -- bumbling and stumbling as he furtively tries to wing his way through strangers’ homes - doing what tooth fairies do. But, as Derek slowly adapts to his new position, he begins to rediscover his own forgotten dreams.

How To Train Your Dragon From the studio that brought you “Shrek,” “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda” comes “How To Train Your Dragon” -- an adventure comedy set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, based on the book by Cressida Cowell. The story centers around a Viking teenager, who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. Initiation is coming, and this is his one chance to prove his worthiness to his tribe and father. But when he encounters, and ultimately befriends, an injured dragon, his world is turned upside down.

Using only their wits, courage and video gameplaying skills, the youngsters must band together to defeat the aliens and save the world - but the toughest part might be keeping the whole thing a secret from their parents!

Grandpa In My Pocket: The Magic Shrinking Cap Comedy drama featuring a Grandpa with a magical shrinking cap that only his grandson Jason knows about. When he puts the cap on Grandpa shrinks and creates comic mayhem, but somehow Grandpa and Jason always manage to save the day. Its teamwork!

Planet 51 Planet 51 is a galactic sized animated alien adventure comedy revolving around American astronaut Captain Charles “Chuck” Baker, who lands on Planet 51 thinking he’s the first person to step foot on it. To his surprise, he finds that this planet is inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950s America, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders... like Chuck! With the help of his robot companion “Rover” and his new friend Lem, Chuck must navigate his way through the dazzling, but bewildering, landscape of Planet 51 in order to escape becoming a permanent part of the Planet 51 Alien Invaders Space Museum.

The Gruffalo The Nation’s Favourite bedtime story is being brought to life in an all star beautiful adaptation of the best-selling book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The film’s all-star voice cast features Robbie Coltrane as the Gruffalo; Helena Bonham Carter as the narrator; Rob Brydon as the Snake; James Corden as the Mouse; John Hurt as the Owl and Tom Wilkinson as the Fox. The Gruffalo tells the magical tale of a mouse who takes a walk through the woods in search of a nut. Encountering three predators who all wish to eat him - a fox, an owl and a snake - the plucky mouse has to use his wits to survive, creating an imaginary monster who then turns out to be only too real.

Are you thinking of planning a holiday or a quick getaway? If you are, it is obviously important that your holiday is perfect. For this, the right planning is the first step. If it’s a known destination, you could do the planning yourself. However, if it’s an unknown venture, you must take the help of a professional, who has the right resources and expertise to help you. 1. Hiring the services of an expert Unless you’re an expert on the destination, it would be a great idea to hire the services of a travel agent or travel company. With their domain knowledge and expertise you might be able to save some money. 2. Planning ahead This one is kind of tricky. How early is enough? I’d say that you should start planning at least 2 months in advance. This is especially important if you are planning to travel in the peak season or your children’s summer holidays. Start doing your research online and check out on rates available. 3. Save money on hotels You don’t always have to stay at a five-star hotel

– there are a huge number of 3 star hotels too that provide great service at really affordable prices. An alternate to this would be staying at a service apartment that comes with good rooms, a kitchenette and even the services of a butler. Your family holiday should never be a horrid experience. When organised and booked through the right channels, it can turn out to be really memorable experience. With some simple tips and tricks, you can actually save enough to spend on really meaningful things – such as shopping or a nice meal for all of you!

Make time... As mothers, finding time for ourselves can be nearly impossible. There are always a million things on our to-do list that we mark as a high priority. At the end of the day, there just isn’t any more time. The other day I was reading an article written by a man. He isn’t married and has no children. He mentioned in his article he was very stressed just from working and doing things for his friends. He felt he had no time for himself. No time to unwind and have fun. I thought to myself, “This guy needs to really figure out what he is spending his time on”. I have a husband to make happy, a house to clean, 2 children to nurture and teach, a car to clean and maintain, a business to grow and that is just to name a few. I’m sure many of you mothers can relate. There are many times when I feel very pressed for time. I asked myself, “How can this man who only has a business and a couple of friends be so stressed and feel he has no time for himself?” The answer is we can all get carried away with the little and mundane tasks that get us through our day and forget to look at the big picture, no matter who we are or where we are in life. So how do we fix this problem? I recently made a list of all the tasks I do throughout the day. I made a new list for each day for about a week. I estimated how long I thought I was spending on each task. At the end of the week, I took a look at

my lists and realised I was wasting quite a bit of time. Can you believe I spent a total of 15 hours checking and responding to emails during that week? That was just email!! Now I know I don’t get that many emails. I tend to get sidetracked when I’m reading my email. That is my problem. What are your time-wasters? I dare you to create similar lists for yourself for a week and see where you stand. Are there things you can spend less time on? I bet there are some things that can even be eliminated? How important is each task? Which ones are really contributing to your family or your business? Really look at those tasks, does your family or customers/clients really care if you tackle that task, or is it something that could wait for another day? Scheduling time for ME. If you want to have time for yourself, you really need to schedule it in. We schedule our work hours, we schedule in time for cooking dinner and spending time with the kids. We even schedule play dates for our children. Why don’t we schedule play dates for ourselves? These dates could be just browsing in a shops. They could be taking a bath or reading a book. Whatever it is that you need to help you unwind and feel alive, is what you need to schedule in to your daily calendar. You should be taking at least 15-60 minutes per day for yourself. You need to schedule these dates in for yourself. You will rarely have a spare hour just pop up where you can decide to take off and do something for you unless you schedule it in.

Almost everyone wishes to stay healthy and live healthy. However living a healthy life requires major effort on your part. You will need to eat well, you will need to exercise, and you will need to look out for yourself in order to be healthy. However, there is one thing that you can do that will contribute greatly to your health. That one thing is eating a healthy breakfast every day of your life, to start the day. It is essential for staying fit. Most people unfortunately skip breakfast for sake of weight loss and sometimes to save time on their way to work. Actually, this is one of the worst things that you can do to your body. A research done by scientists indicated that when the body doesn’t start with a healthy breakfast, the metabolic rate will drop down considerably and this will also cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. This will also cause you to eat bigger meals and unhealthy snacks during the day and because your metabolism has reduced itself in the morning, you will be able to burn less calories. You might not only gain weight, but your body will also be thrown in an imbalance when you don’t eat breakfast. Eating breakfast will solve your problems greatly as your body will feel full and satisfied. Your metabolic rate will increase along with thermo genesis (the rate of energy burning by your body). Your blood sugar levels will balance out and you will not feel the craving for extra snacks and foods for 4-5 hours. You should take care to eat a healthy breakfast. However, it will need to be balanced in order to be healthy. This means that ^c VhhdX^Vi^dc l

The little girl who looks after me has asked me to tell you a bit more about me. I am a mammals and I belong to the rodent family. There are many different types of hamsters throughout the world and if I lived in the wild I would live in a semi-desert area where I would live in a burrow. These burrows consist of many tunnels and separate chambers including chambers where I could store food and sleep. In the wild we are nocturnal, sleeping during the hot days and waking in the cooler evenings. We have very poor eyesight but a keen sense of smell and excellent hearing. We have expandable cheek pouches in which we can carry food and bedding back to our burrow where we will store food. The word ‘hamster’ comes from the German word ‘hamsters’ which means ‘to hoard’. Hamster mix will provide me with a good basic diet, I also enjoy fruit and vegetables. It is really important that fruit and vegetables were introduced to my diet gradually as a sudden large amount of fruit or vegetables can make me poorly. I enjoy being picked up and cuddled and I love running around our house in my ball too.

Hang out the Bunting…

Make your own pasta…

Pep up the children’s bedrooms by decorating the walls with some home made bunting. First, draw a triangle on some card using a ruler. Make the base of th triangle 23cms, and the 2 sides 28cms. Cut this out, and use it as a template to make more triangles from wrapping paper, newspaper, crepe paper or tissue. Next, take 2 of the matching triangles and sandwich them together, using glue or sticky tape at the top with a drinking straw cut to size in between. Thread a length of string through the straws at the top of each triangle, and it’s ready to hang!

You don’t need a machine to make your own pasta, but you do need to knead like crazy! Take 600g of flour and a half a dozen eggs. Place the flour in a bowl, make a well in it and add the eggs. Take a fork and mix them all together, then use clean fingers to mix it a bit more, rubbing the flour and eggs between your fingers until it is all bound together in a big doughy ball. Then knead and knead until your arms ache. Once the dough is smooth, cover it with clingfilm and put it in the fridge for an hour or so. Next, roll out the dough on a floury surface until it’s as thin as card. Cut the pasta sheets to the shape you want and cook for about 3 minutes in boiling water.

Make it snow... To make realistic looking snow for modelling, all you need is soap flakes and water. Use 2 mugs full of soap flakes to half a cup of water and then whisk them together with an electric mixer until the gloop is as thick as whipped cream. Add more soap or water until the consistency is right and then leave the mixture overnight before modelling it into shapes. It dries out once shaped and lasts several weeks.

Make edible stained glass… First pre-heat the oven to 170 degrees C. Take some boiled fruit sweets and some metal shape cutters. Line a baking sheet with foil spray the surface with cooking oil and place the cutters on to it. Put the sweets into the cutter and pop in the oven for about 6 minutes until the sweets have melted. Take out the tray and swirl the liquid around with a cocktail stick until it fills the cutter. Be very careful this liquid can get very hot! Leave to cool off and remove from the cutter when still a little sticky but cold. Leave to harden and enjoy!

Make stone monsters... Gather some smooth stones and paint them using acrylic or tester pots of household paint. Once dry, stick on some goggly eyes and paint on a teeth-baring mouth. You can then give them away as paperweights.

Make your own bath salts...

Use a tea cup to measure out two cups of Epsom salts, one cup of course salt (sea salt or rock salt) and half a cup of baking soda. Mix them together in a bowl, the add about 20 drops of aromatherapy oil. If you want them to be an attractive colour you can add a few drops of food colouring first. Mix thoroughly and then spread the salts in a thin layer on a tray lined with greaseproof paper and let them dry out. Store the finished salts in a wide-mouthed jar. If you want to make them for a gift, make 2 bowls of salts in 2 different colours and then layer them in a jar!

Make a garden obstacle course... Line up 4 or 5 chairs for children to wriggle under, followed by a paddling pool to splash through. Place bricks at intervals for kids to use as stepping stones, balance a plank on two bricks to walk along, arrange a rope in a twirly shape to tip toe through and set out bin bags to have a sack race in, bean bags or potato’s to throw into bins and a football to kick or bounce ten times. Time each child as they work their way through the course.

Do some potato printing... Take a potato and cut it in half. Draw a simple shape on the cut surface with a felt tip pen and then carefully cut round the shape so that it sticks out from the rest of the potato. Press the shape into a saucer of poster paint, then print on to paper or card. If you use fabric paint, this is a great way to brighten up a white t shirt.

Create a colourful carnation...

Step 1: take a plain white carnation with a long stem. With a sharp knife (and the help of a parent), split the carnation’s stem lengthwise, from the bottom to about halfway up. Step 2: fill 2 glasses with water. Use food colouring to turn the water in one glass dark red and the other blue. Step 3: place the glasses next to each other, with one half of the carnation’s stem in each glass. Step 4 : Check the carnation a day later and 2 days later. You will be able to tell in glorious technicolor how the water travels up the stem and reaches the petals!
