HIGH JUMPER AT BITHAM! Rob Mitchell, a high jumper who represented Wales in the Commonwealth Games, visited Bitham Brook Primary School. His visit took place on Tuesday 25th February 2014. Why did Rob come in? Rob Mitchell visited the school to show us four simple exercises. The four exercises were: Spotty Dogs, Leg Drives, Press Ups and Star Jumps, which each lasted a minute. The whole school then took part in this event and each child raised some money. 60% of the money will go to the school, and the other 40% will go to Sports for You North for unsponsored athletes. What happened? Rob Mitchell held an assembly about his life and inspiration and he was inspired by guess who... his Dad. Later on in the assembly, Rob presented some of the children with a postcard, poster, or they had a photo taken with him, depending on how much money they raised. When all the money was added together, the total amount raised was £2,709.03.

GREAT BITHAM BAKE-OFF Children at Bitham Brook Primary School recently took part in the Great Bitham Bake-Off. The children in Mr Wood’s and Miss Clark’s class researched different countries competing in the Winter Olympics. They then chose their cupcake recipe and designed their cake to reflect different countries and different events in the Olympic Games. They also designed their own packaging. Miss Clark was very pleased with the whole event. ‘The children were so enthusiastic and creative. They developed good teamwork and they learnt so much whilst having lots of fun.’

WORLD WAR 2 COMES TO FROME The Key Stage 2 children at Vallis First School were transported back to World War 2 for the day. To end their topic they were invited to dress as children would have dressed during the war, they had lots of fun doing various wartime activities including a sing-along in the hall, making spam sandwiches in the war kitchen, making ID tags ready for evacuation and collecting stamps in their ration books. Key Stage 2 co-ordinator Tracy Massey said “The children have really enjoyed the WWII topic so to experience it for the day has been lots of fun for them all.”

MUSIC CONCERT STRIKES GOLD Westbury Leigh Primary School pupils an opportunity to showcase their musical talents. Former pupil Wade Merritt opened the concert on the piano, playing and singing ‘When I was your man’ by Bruno Mars. This was followed by individuals and groups of children playing instruments and singing, performing their pieces with gusto and flair. The music ranged from piano and grade pieces to self-composed and written compositions. Recorders wowed the audience with a complex Mozart piece and Choir ended the evening with their renditions of ‘Lean on me’ and ‘Can you hear my voice?’ Special thanks were given to a number of staff who had got involved and supported the event, with special thanks given to Miss Nicola Clamp who co-ordinated the event. The range of talent was overwhelming as parents and friends saw children who ranged from beginner to accomplished, all confident to have a go and celebrate their learning journey. A small collection was taken and this will go towards further performing arts resources in the school. Parents were bowled over by the children’s confidence and the quality of music produced and were full of praise for this up and coming school.

This term the topic at Berkeley School is Land Ahoy and we are having a lot of fun learning all about pirates. For one of the wow days they organised a whole school trip to Bristol. The trip consisted of a ‘Pirate Walk’ with ‘Pirate Pete’ and ‘Dangerous Duncan’ learning all about Bristol’s turbulent Pirate history, and the harbour side haunts of the pirates and swashbucklers of the 17th and 18th centuries. The children also visited the ‘M Shed’ to explore the history of Bristol. They especially enjoyed their Pirate style lunches. Well done to all our fab parents!

GRAND LIBRARY OPENING SCHOOL DANCE CLUB PERFORM AT THE BATH FORUM On Wednesday 26 February Westbury Leigh Primary School’s Dance Club performed at The Bath Forum for the Annual Dance Festival. The festival showcased performances by schools from all over the county. The children performed an original piece, full of colour. They incorporated different movements with gymnastic elements to a song from The Lion King. The performance was a huge success and enjoyed by the children and audience alike.

On Thursday 27 February Westbury Leigh Primary School welcomed Brian Moses into school to formally open their fantastic new school library. Brian Moses is a successful Performance Poet, Percussionist and Editor and has written poetry professionally for over 21 years. Brian is famous for titles such as ‘Holding the Hands of Angels’, ‘Beetles in the Bathroom’ and ‘The Snake Hotel’. Brian spent the afternoon in the school hall performing and holding workshops for the children. This was then followed by a grand opening ceremony at 2-45pm where the ribbon to the new library was officially cut! Parents were welcomed into school at the end of the day to see the wonderful transformation for themselves and to meet Brian and purchase signed copies of his latest titles. Parents and children have spent many months fundraising as part of “Friends of Westbury Leigh School” for the wonderful new school library facilities. The school is now extremely well equipped with bespoke shelving which houses hundreds of fabulous children’s books for all ages. Thanks have been given to Julie Cann, Literacy Leader who co-ordinated this. “The new library is a wonderful gift to the children of our school and we are extremely grateful to Fowls for all their fundraising in helping us achieve this” said Debbie Grimsey, Headteacher. “Pupils love coming to the library and this now makes it a really purposeful and attractive place for them to come and browse and this can only be a good thing!” There is no doubt that many generations will enjoy this fabulous addition to the school for many years to come.

RUGBY After 6 intensive rugby workshops with a fantastic Bath Rugby coach, ten Berkley children from years 3 and 4 were given the opportunity to play against rival schools at half time of Bath vs Newcastle at The Rec in February. The atmosphere was incredible and the children all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Family and friends were able to purchase tickets and come along to support, banners and all. The children all played excellently and won their game 5 tries to one.

CHESS NEWS St John’s School in Frome hosted the latest Somerset Primary Schools Chess Tournament on Sunday, with 5 Selwood pupils taking part: Thomas L, Harry F, Almos J, Magor J, and Poppy P. Almos and Magor both scored 3 out of 6 in the Under 11/10 section, and Poppy scored 4, putting her in joint 3rd place overall, and the highest placed Under 10 girl, for which she was awarded a shield. They all played 6 very tough games against children from Bath, Bristol and Bradford-on-Avon schools, with commendable results.

WEST WILTS DANCE FESTIVAL 2014- ‘THE COMMONWEALTH’ As part of the Sky Sports Step into Sport Program Larkrise School decided to focus on leadership through dance.The obvious thing to do, was to show off what we achieved at the Bath Forum in front of an audience 500+! We chose ‘Hall of Fame’ by The Script as our music. Our dance story was based on our older, experienced pupils dancing as England Rugby Players whilst the younger dancers performed as ‘Super Fans!’ The age range was 4-19yrs!! Not only did the older students lead & guide the ‘Fans’ during the rehearsals & performance, they also supported them on the night.They really did lead by example & the ‘Fans’ rose to the occasion! They danced & perhaps more importantly behaved beautifully. We always perform well on the BIG stage, but I have to say (perhaps I am biased? But still...!!) we were outstanding & the audience thought so too! We received a standing ovation & the feedback since has been wonderful. From my point of view as the PE Coordinator it was everything I had hoped for & more. My aim is for all our pupils to be included in whatever they want to do.We don’t see barriers, we see challenges & we always want to achieve them! This was a chance for us to show the other West Wilts Schools what Larkrise does.To show them that we can & we will! Written by Larkrise School

OPTION CHOICES DAY Thirty pupils from Oakfield Academy attended an Option Choices day at the University of Bath on January 27th.Year 8 pupils are considering their option choices and this day provided an excellent opportunity to look at different routes into Higher Education.The day had a variety of activities including; interviewing students, discovering personal skills/qualities, looking at the value of qualifications as well as exploring the university campus.The day proved to very exciting as well as rewarding. The pupils were accompanied by Paula Royle and Kate Stewart, both K.S.3 Curriculum Team leaders.They are responsible for helping the transition between schools and helping pupils with their option choices. Frome College invited Oakfield Academy to be part of this ‘Widening Participation’ initiative and also helped with the cost of transport. Gemma Palmer, who is the Outreach officer said,“I would like to congratulate your Year Eight students for their impeccable behaviour and hard working attitude throughout the day.They were by far the most motivated and well mannered students out of all the schools who attended, and are a read credit to Oakfield Academy. Please pass on our congratulations. I am certain they will go far and achieve great things in life! Warmest Regards”.

SPORTSHALL REGIONAL FINALS Oakfield Academy pupils Ben, Tallulah, Lewis and Max had the privilege of representing Somerset in the ‘Sportshall Regional 2014 Finals’ recently in Torbay. Each pupil is a member of ACE (Academy of Combined Events), an athletics club based at Millfield School, and were chosen following trials, to participate in this event. The pupils competed in the Under 13’s category, participating in vertical jump, shot, speed bounce, relay and sprints, amongst other events. Other Counties present were Cornwall, Dorset, Devon, Gloucestershire and Avon (Bath & Bristol). Although Somerset were not fortunate enough to go through to the UK finals, the Oakfield Academy pupils put up a valiant fight and gave 100% in each of their events. Lewis, who competed for Somerset in this event last year in Bristol said; “It has been a great honour once again to compete for Somerset and represent Oakfield Academy”. Me and my team mates are looking forward to training hard, qualifying for the squad and representing Somerset again next year”.

THE BIG BAKE CHALLENGE

SOUTHWEST FINALS

Tia Rollason a Year 8 student at Oakfield Academy was the winner of the Oakfield Big Bake off competition in March. This put her through to the regional final against a range of secondary schools in Wiltshire. The final was in Chippenham and Tia was up against students who were all older than herself and were Catering students in Year 10. The competition was stiff. Her sweet creme patisserie strawberry tart was cooked and presented beautifully. Tia came third overall just 2 points short of second place. An excellent experience for her and Oakfield for the future

Oakfield Academy have reached the KS3 Southwest Girls Contact Rugby finals.The girls have progressed through two tournaments to reach the finals, beating along the way Writhlington, Selwood, Ralph Allen, Minehead,Ansford and Bucklers Mead schools.The tournaments held at Ivel Barbarians RFC have been run by the England RFU and have given the girls the opportunity to really test themselves and improve their rugby skills.The girls aged between 11-13 have only started contact Rugby this year and none belong to or play for a Rugby club, although there are plans afoot for this to change. PE Teacher Pete Fowler commented “It is down to the girls commitment and hard work in training and their desire to learn and improve that has enabled them to be successful, they are a real team and work very hard for each other�. GYMNASTICS COMP On Sunday 26th January, Emily, Elsie, William and Jack went to Wellsprings Leisure Centre in Taunton to represent Selwood Academy in the South West B.S.G.A. School Team Gymnastics Competition They performed individual floor routines, vaults and a synchronised group floor display. In their category, Under 11 Mixed Team, they came in first place. The team will now represent the South West of England in the National Finals in Stoke on Trent on March 8th.

NOSE MANUAL

Start at a moderate speed with your fee6t near the front and push the handle bars forward a bit and then lean forward. Try to balance like this as long as possible.

Start at a moderate speed and bend your knees, then take your back foot off the scooter and plant it on the ground. With your knees still bent, use the planted foot to boost yourself into the air. While in the air, bend your knees and put your foot back on the scooter, land and ride away. This trick is used for jumping higher and longer.

ROCK TO FAKIE

Ride up to a curb, rail, coping etc. and jay hop, try to land with the middle of the scooter on the curb and balance. When you are ready, lean back and bunny hop, if done correctly you should land safely riding backwards.

WHEELIE (OR MANUAL)

Ride at a moderate pace, move your feet to the back of the board. Keep your back foot on the board, lift pressure of your front foot and pull up on your handle bars. Lift the front wheel but keep the back on the ground.

STALL

Jayhop onto any edge such as a curb, park bench, rail or whatever. Balance as long as you can. Jahop back onto the ground.

BAR GRAB

Bunny hop off a ramp and while you are in the air, let go with one hand and grab the bar that connects the handle bars to the base, when you are done grab the handle bars again and land.

INDIAN AIR

Bunny hop or no comply off a ramp and cross your legs like an x and bring them up a bit, then put your feet back on and land.

TAIL TAP

Ride up to a ledge or curb, going straight at it. Bunny hop and turn 90 degrees. While you are in the air, put your back foot on the brake then land on the curb with only your back wheel on it and your front wheel in the air. Balance as long as you can and then, when you are ready, bunny hop off of the ledge/curb and turn 90 degrees in the air, land and ride away.

BUNNY HOP

Ride at a moderate pace, bend your knees, jump up and pull the board firmly against feet by pulling up on the handle bars. Land with your board straight or you’ll stack.

JAYHOP

Do a wheelie then attempt a bunny hop. What you want to do is kinda like a wheelie but both wheels leave the ground. The front wheel should be higher than the back wheel.

FARMS have grown in popularity in recent years, most probably because they are one of the few outlets that allow children to get up close to animals and to share in the experience of caring for them. THE ALPHABET GAME: Think of an easy category (like names, or places or animals) and then find a word for every letter of the alphabet. For example, if it was names, the first person might say Anna, the second Bill, and so on. WORD ASSOCIATION: Be as free as you like. The first person says apple, second person says banana, third person says monkey, etc.You can also play a version where you have to try and work back to the first word. SAUSAGES: One person has to answer people’s questions answering only with the word ‘sausages’. Everyone has to think of the silliest questions they can ask to try and make that person laugh or smile when they say it. If they do, they are no longer it, and the person who asked the question takes over.


THE PUB GAME: Look for pub signs and see how long it takes you to collect 5 heads, 10 arms and 20 legs. To do this, you simply count the number of legs and arms depicted on the pub sign, or in the name: ie, the Queen’s Head; the Phoenix and Falcon (4 legs) etc. THE NUMBER PLATE GAME: Look at the nearest number plate for the first group of three letters. The first letter is the initial of the person’s name; the second is where they come from, and the third is the job they do. THE NO ‘YESES’ OR ‘NOS’ GAME: You ask one person questions to which they can answer anything except yes or no. If they say yes or no they are out and it’s someone else’s turn. (What’s your name? Dental hygiene is one of the most important life skills you can teach your child. It’s never too early to start getting them used to looking after their teeth - and the dividends will pay off in future. We were brought up being told not to eat between meals but now it seems that we literally can’t help helping ourselves, with Brits admitting to being addicted to snacking and finding it impossible to quit. And it seems our need to snack is taking over our lives as six per cent of us even admit to snacking in bed. A third of us would rather give up alcohol than snacks and 13% of smokers said they’d rather kick their nicotine habit than give up chocolate, biscuits and crisps.

10 steps to avoiding snacking: 1. Identify what - Keeping a food diary can help you identify your snacking reality. 
2. Identify where - Once you know what your snacks are, you need to consider where you are most likely to snack - then clear out your snack stash. 3. Identify when - Knowing when you snack can reveal the trigger. When you’ve sussed out your snacking patterns, you’re ready to confront them. 4. Find a healthier alternative - Try a low calorie chocolate drink instead of chocolate or popcorn instead of crisps. 5. Distract yourself Occupy your mind with other things - go for a walk, phone a friend, get busy cleaning or ironing, read a book, take a bath, paint your nails etc to get your mind off those treats. 6. Avoid tricky situations - Take a packed lunch

to work to avoid the temptation of shops, and cut back on tea or coffee if you usually have biscuits too. 7. Cut the portions - You can make anything instantly healthier by cutting the portions - this way you get a little of what you fancy, just in a smaller package. 8. Fill up on fruit and veg Aim for at least 5 a day, so if you feel yourself reaching for a snack, make it fruits or vegetables instead. 9.Make small changes - If you deprive yourself of everything that you like and that is habitual, it’s much harder, and is likely to end in a cycle of deprivation and bingeing. 10. Don’t forget drinks - Whether it’s a fizzy drink, orange juice or the mid-morning caramel latte - they add up, so choose a healthier alternative like green tea or water.

Focus On Feet To Give Children Firm Start

A rising number of children are being referred to podiatrists and GPs with more serious foot problems than ever before. Retailers have reported seeing far more serious foot health problems including Hallux Valgus, Ankle Valgus, heel bumps and Plantar Fasciitis in children - conditions which are usually only seen in the elderly. A lot of the problems can be traced to ill-fitting, cheap fashionable

shoes and are likely to result in leg, knee, back and neck pain, as well as migraine. One of the most important yet most abused parts of the human body is the feet. Feet are designed to take body weight and give mobility essential to quality of life. Feet are often crammed into the most unsuitably shaped shoes - often made of plastic - and the only time they are given a thought is when they hurt. From birth to early teens, feet are at their most vulnerable; in fact there are 26 bones in the foot, and they do not stop growing until around the age of 18. Shoe fitters and chiropodists spend the majority of their time trying to correct damage and ease discomfort which could have been avoided if shoes had been correctly fitted when purchased. Shoes should always be fitted by trained personnel as a fitting gauge plays only a small role in the selection of the correct shoe. Advice from the

SSF when choosing infant shoes is to pick those which are designed around the shape of the feet - slim at the heel and wide at the front because an infant’s foot is reasonably triangular in shape and consists mostly of gristle and cartilage. They should be firm and snug at the heel to cradle the foot and yet flexible at the front with an adjustable fastening. Materials should be natural - cotton and leather linings and leather uppers are porous and ensure that moisture is absorbed and allowed to escape, keeping the feet dry and avoiding irritating complaints such as Athletes Foot. Leather is also the only material to conform to the shape of the foot and stay there, thus making the best possible fit. This is why shoes should never be passed down to another child! Children aged four and upwards should have shoes checked every 10 to 12 weeks, and at the least every four months.

ACTIVITIES Activities for school-age children are not only after school, but can run at weekends and during holidays. An Out of School Club is a childcare facility that offers childcare - usually before and after school hours and also during the school holidays. They offer your child a safe, stimulating place in which to play or take part in activities and crafts. The clubs are not open access so the children must be registered with the group and be collected by parents/carers. Out of school clubs are required to register with Ofsted to meet the National Standards. The standards relate to their suitability as carers

of children, the safety of premises and facilities, insurance and record keeping. Parents should not assume all carers have been subject to police checks. Supervisors and Officers in charge will, but assistant staff may not necessarily be. Their certificates of registration and public liability insurance should always be on display. Andrew Garfield swings back into action in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’, which picks up with Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy as they prepare to graduate. The web-slinging, wise-cracking superhero is struggling to keep his promise to stay away from Gwen. Meanwhile, he has a bunch of hulking new baddies to scare off, including The Rhino. But the real threat comes from super-charged enemy Electro, an Oscorp employee who gains powers of electrokinesis.
